Flaming Lips finally gave the 90s their Pet Sounds. Masterpiece.
And they literally did Dark Side of the Moon as well.
I prefer Yoshimi
@@BobbyGeneric145 Yoshimi has higher highs but as a complete album it has nothing on The Soft Bulletin.
@@THEDEEPDIVE see i like yoshimi all the way through... Just never jived with soft bulletin. Its a good album, just personally don't like it nearly as much as yoshimi.
@@BobbyGeneric145 no worries. Yoshimi is a fn amazing album with a unique sound and many of the best songs of all time by anyone ever. I'm a fan.. so I get it. It's strange to me that you see that album as great as I see it and 'never jived with soft bulletin'. To me that is like saying " I loved Magical Mystery Tour but never jived with Sgt. Peppers.' Like what you like though! :)
The Lips are otherworldly. They are masters of taking from everything before them, to create something that sounds simultaneously like the past and future. Their sound pallet is as unlimited as the mighty Floyd and yet they can kick out the jams like a good old fashioned metal band. They used to (may still?) do a ripping version of War Pigs live, that's among my favorites.
The stuff they did last year at the start of the pandemic was brilliant.
Wayne is a true space cowboy.
Rich the Ancient Metal Beast
Slow clap of appreciation for the Patreon bringing the Lips to Geebz attention. Geebz, the band performed this album with the Colorado symphony in 2016 at Red Rocks and released it as a full album if you were ever curious to hear another version of this tune.
One of the best albums of the 90s hands down. This was a huge shift in their sound production/orchestration wise. Their earlier albums were more fuzzed-out garage-psych and college rock. Still good though. On The Soft Bulletin they got in touch with their inner Floyd/Yes/Genesis. They’re definitely one of the more unique bands of their generation.
Yes please!!! More!
You should really do "do you realize". It is easily their most popular song, but with good reason. Amazing production.
Loved your reaction here. It was a genuine reaction, not knowing even the genre. The Yoshimi album is more of a concept album, and fantastic. Worth checking out.
This whole album is great, the way I've described it is sunshine injected directly to the brain.
Yes! Been waiting for this! Thanks so much Geebz! I love this album! Tracks I'd recommend are Feeling Yourself Disintegrate, The Gash, What is The Light? A Spoonful Weighs A Ton,, Suddenly Everything Has Changed Or just the whole album is a wonderful listening experience. Also, listen to Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots album. Thanks again.
Listening to SB again for the "millionth" time. So awesome. The Heady Nuggs Vinyl version has a bit different track list with Slow Motion between The Gash and Feeling Yourself Disintegrate. Brilliant either way.
This album is an absolute masterpiece, my favorite of theirs. I’d love to see you react to the whole thing, it’s a really well produced concept album, maybe one of the best from that era.
Suddenly Everything Has Changed is doing me of my all time favorites, this album is SO good, cannot be slept on.
Love some Flaming Lips!
This album and Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots are great albums that I highly recommend. They also are amazing live. I think the singer's voice is half Jon Anderson and half Neil Young. They are very psychedelic/prog, probably more psychedelic.
You hit the nail on the head with Jon Anderson.
The Flaming Lips are studio wizards.
Been sick in bed for two days, your good vibes are what's needed. Love ya brother
I've followed your channel for a couple years and had no idea you did this one. The remaster of The Soft Bulletin is so perfect, and the album will make you weep tears of beauty.
Wow, so glad you did this Geebz! Flaming Lips have some killer albums. The Soft Bulletin, Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, Embryonic, Clouds Taste Metallic, The Terror, American Head, etc etc. Theyve been around for almost 40 years, so there is a good bit of material. Theres a variety of musical avenues theyve gone down and most of them turn out good if not great. Their live shows are a treat as well. Wayne's voice isn't anything to write home about, but they find a way to make it work. Cheers!
Wayne's voice is essential in its honesty and portrayal of the lyrics. They could have got so-called 'perfect' takes but the humanity and realism of his voice layers wonderfully with the perfection of the music and backing vocal. Would have been damn boring without Wayne's personality for it is this that completes the Lips
@@christophervincent3520 largely agree! I personally love Wayne's voice, but I can see how it would turn some folks off. The heartfelt, sing along nature of his vocals is what draws me in to most of their work. Love these guys!
Embryonic IMO is their best :)
Good call going with the remaster, the whole album sounds amazing.
Man o man was this a change of pace!
They sound like they have a lot of diverse influences. I think they were on Beverly Hills 90210 one time lol.
You can just hear the influence they had on Kevin Parker and other current Psychedelic artists in a lot of sounds in this song alone.
I noticed that on their song apocalypse dreams...some of the drums in that reminded me of drums in Race for the prize
David Friedman produced they both
@@lenadroks huh! that makes sense then haha.
You should really breakdown incubus - the warmth. As a composer you'll be in heaven
I grew up listening to this from my brother. It was produced by Dave Friedman from the band "Mercury Rev".
Thank you Geebz
Theres a bside of theirs called up above the daily hum. The most beautiful song ever.
They are the ones that sing "Do you Realize?"
I saw them open for Beck and play as his backup band at the Detroit Opera House.
Zaireeka, their eighth studio album, consists of four CDs designed so that when played simultaneously on four separate audio systems, they would produce a harmonic or juxtaposed sound; the discs could also be played in different combinations, omitting one, two or three discs.
please do more of The Flaming Lips. they have been around since the 80s and have pushed music so much. love this band !!!!
I've never really listened to these guys a whole lot but this was great and definitely should listen to some more by them. Pretty unrelated suggestion but you should do Poke by Frightened Rabbit.
They used detuned MIDI keyboards to create the orchestral sounds.
Indeed. Steven Drozd, their multi-instrumentalist, aided by producer David Fridmann, created such marvellous texture all through their careful programming and layering of a variety of Midi and sample sources. Painstaking but perfect and perhaps a bit cheaper than an orchestra in a studio.
one of the best albums ever.
I know the band but not the track, and I gotta say, I've always thought I should investigate the flaming lips further. I worked with a guy that was always putting them on and it was always a breath of fresh air.
I have also been meaning to explore their catalog, and was not familiar with this track. What I do know of them is amazing!
That was fantastic, my older brother always has loved this album but I never really got round to listening to it. I think this will be tomorrow morning's coffe-time wake up music. Thanks Geebz, great video as always. Hope you're recovering well from your op.
These guys are wild. As a composer I think you will really enjoy them. Their album "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots" is an amazing concept album with great songs. Recommend!
Love the flaming lips! Definitely an all time favorite.
This was actually a first time listen for me as well so it was interesting sorta reacting to the song along with you, as opposed to say the Tool reactions for which I already know and love every song. Thanks again!
As an Okie, I’m extremely proud of The Flaming Lips. Wayne and Steve most importantly. All thru my high school and college days, I got to see them grow and change into what they’ve become today. The one two punch of Zaireeka and The Soft Bulletin really knocked them onto another level and the world embraced it. Hold on…Yoshimi is coming up. Greater things to come.
Key of geebz it's not an orchestra. Its MIDI, they also detuned 4 keyboards to give the (slightly off) sound
It is still orchesrated.
Do You Realize followed by See the Leaves. Those songs would be example of their musical range.
Yoshimi. That is all.
I agree!
The last few years I have come to realize that the Flaming Lips are genius. They are artist and compose amazing songs! Will you return / When you come down is my song suggestion.
Yess
Love the Flaming Lips but it’s been quite awhile since I’ve listened to them, unfortunately. Saw them live twice. First show was amazing. The second was not. They were just covering “Dark Side of the Moon”. I was expecting it to be just as good, if not better. And it wasn’t. May be why I got away from them. I’m happy to hear them again and I hope we see more of them on here. My favorite song is probably “Do You Realize”. Thank you!
I think the term you were trying to remember might have been “concept album”. I’m not very familiar with a lot of their music but The Flaming Lips’ Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots record is kind of a concept album and I adore it. There’s several songs off of Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots that would be worth checking out but the whole album is absolutely stunningly beautiful as a whole.
This was a formative album in my college years, along with Lateralus by Tool, Ship Arriving Too Late to Save a Drowning Witch by Frank Zappa, and About Face by David Gilmour.
This was an EXCELLENT track to get into the Lips...I might join your Patreon just to suggest a few more, make sure they get in there! ❤ aloha Geebs!
Would love to see you react to anything from Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots! I’d personally recommend In the Morning of the Magicians if you dig their vibe.
I second that!
I saw Kevin from Tame Impala talk about this album...its how I found them...its amazing!
That is the drummer! The drummer doing the orchestration! The drummer is the main brain in the writing.
Great band, Go deep Geebz!
THIS was the first tune of their's when I first heard it where I realized I'd love the band forever. The bridge around 3:33 was the exact moment. And Steven Drozd would be the one responsible for most all the cool stuff you're hearing. He's the drummer, but also covering keys, most guitar, and all the vocal harmonies (as well as basically arranging the whole deal)
This was my Patreon pick. Part of me thought I should go with the no brainer Yoshimi or Do You Realize but this song has always been special to me. Besides I thought the way the song was “composed” with the lush midi string arrangement and interesting panning, I thought the decomposer might have more fun with this. I’m glad it finally made it to the UA-cam channel. I feel The Lips don’t get enough love around here.
Race For The Prize is pretty great. Good lyrics on that one too.
Welllll this is different 🤣
Nice, i really wish i had 4 cd players and a bunch of people to listen to zaireeka all 4 cds played at the same time.. its a trip to listen to live. And this album in 5.1 surround sound is a trip. I have like 5 of their albums in 5.1
Another fun fact this tour the drummer began playing guitar and keys live so the drums were all playback in headphones worn by audience members and sounds played direct in your head
In the style of a concept album? Could be! Now l’m curious! 😃
Never heard of them in the past 30+ years? Damn, homie...
Ya'know, just like Geebz, I was expecting to get hit with something harder and heavier (especially because of that bassy drum hit at the end of each bar,) and this song just leaves you with a feel-good feeling!
Such a great track!
MERRY CHRISTMAS GEEBZ.LUV YA WORK...ITS BEEN FUN.
Soft bulletin is perfect. Yoshimi is even better.
Love this tune! You should also check out Do You Realize??
That and "Are you a Hypnotist?" Are my two favorites.
GEEBZ YOUR GONNA LOVE THE LIPS
So yes and no the soft builten is a light concept album. Buts it's kinda not. Its about life, love, death. So you truly understood the song and album right off the bat. I'm so impressed I also believe steve drozd (guitarist, drummer, piano and backing vocals) composed all the orchestral sounds off his keyboard
Such a great album. 👍👍another great band to watch Geebz dig into
The entire Yoshimi album is great too. And thanks to this year's tour, there's plenty of videos of the full album live. But yeah, Soft Bulletin is awesome.
Absolutely fantastic album. The Lips are sound scientists.
Such an amazing band. Always interesting, always different. A group of amazingly talented musicians, lead by a multimedia visionary.
They also do an amazing cover of War Pigs.
Rich the Ancient Metal Beast
holy fuck to be 14 again and putting on the soft bulletin for the first time again would be wild
"Race For the Prize"!!!!
Awesome Song!
I know you dont often watch new releases but Mayflower - Save Me hit me different. It's emotional and heavy a perfect mix i really love it :)
Stay save Geebz
I believe that a significant amount of those orchestral sounds were actually played on Mellotron, which is why they have such a retro sound. That plus their fondness for lofi recording techniques, such as recording drums with a single room mic with the gain just a little too hot, create a really fun and unique vibe.
Also, the man performing all of the drums, guitars, keys, backing vocals, etc, is named Steven Drozd, and if I remember right, he was actively struggling with a heroin addiction during the recording of this album. I watched a documentary about the band years ago, and they talked about how he stayed clean while tracking, but that meant that he just laid on a couch in withdrawal until it was time for him to track something, and then he’d go in and do some amazing genius stuff, then go lay back down. I think I’ve got that right… it’s been like 15 years since I watched that documentary, so don’t take this as gospel.
This is more in the Radiohead realm of tunes in terms of what you've listened to. I personally would love for you to tackle more genres outside the metal, because other lady artists like Bjork and Kate Bush deserve your attention.
I know I'm late to the party, but after a scan of the comments, I don't think anyone brought this up (may have, could've missed it). I think it's cool, so here goes. First of all, great video. I'm glad you experienced a great track from a great record. The orchestration on this record is fantastic, unusual, and (at times) otherworldly. Musical genius Steven Drozd pulled it off with multiple MIDI layers. That's what gives it that chamber-type feel. The fact that they were able to do a MIDI orchestra and not sound hokey I think says something in itself. They had an excellent producer and engineer for this record, too, Dave Fridmann. Michael Ivins, the Lips' bassist, started getting into the technical side of record producing during the making of The Soft Bulletin, as well. I think Michael's talent really shines in this track specifically. Wayne Coyne's lyrics are at once absurdist, pedestrian, and profound. All this is to say that The Soft Bulletin has that je ne sais quois that makes it a top 10 record for me. Again, I enjoyed your video. Great job!
You should check out their album Zaireeka. 4 discs meant to be played at the same time. A pain to setup and listen to that way, but worth it.
Found something interesting about this tune and the entire album: The "orchestra" was all the synth...so to make it sound more realistic the slightly detuned all the keyboard from one another to mimic the imperfect tuning of a real orchestra
The Flaming Lips honestly have a lot of truly great songs. I would love to hear a few from Yoshimi sometime. By a few, I mean lots.
If you like that, you should check out a song called mutilated lips by ween. Similar band imo
Yes! I've been waiting for the Flaming Lips! Their first 2-3 albums totally different. "Jesus Shootin Heroin" is a great track!
Wasn't this album recorded with the weird programmed synths? I mean, the orchestration is played with keyboards oddly programmed, right?
This was cool, never heard this song before.
"The cover artwork of the album is a modified version of a photograph taken by Lawrence Schiller titled The Acid Test: Neal Cassady, which according to Schiller, depicts Neal Cassady dancing with his own shadow during an Acid Test conducted by the Merry Pranksters"
Amazing creativity. The voice is certainly 'accessible' although it always put me off a little, but the music is incredible!
The wizard turns on
Yoshimi pt.1&2
One of the best live bands ever
My brother in law is friends with these guys. I've been saying for years I need to Give them a deeper look.... But I always forget.
Please do "Daydreaming" by Radiohead. Quite an ethereal experience.
Please react to The Greener Grass by Fair to Midland Geebz it's amazing. Love you and Happy Holidays!!
It sounds like they were inspired by The Beatles' White album and Abby Road.
This album was born from the Zaireka album these are songs that didn't make the cut. Zaireka was a 4 disc album with the same 8 songs, with each disc playing different parts of the song. The idea was to play all 4 discs in 4 different cd players at the same time. TRULY unique! So Zaireeka was the expetiment, The Soft Bulletin was the perfecting of that experiment!
The Flaming Lips album YOSHIMI BATTLES THE PINK ROBOTS is a Must Hear!!!
Flaming Lips & Guests.
Dark Side Of The Moon.
You'll thank me.
The majority of the instrumentation (if not all of it) was performed by Steven Drozd, with all the orchestral instruments being played on a keyboard
More Lips
I would suggest 'Will You Return/When You Come Down" off of their most recent album which is phenomenal by the way for those who haven't heard it. It reminds me of going back to Yoshimi. It's an amazing piece of music.
Next have Killing Jokes - The Death & Resurrection Show..? 👀👀👍
It's funny you say it sounds recorded live because that's definitely the intended sound but it most certainly was not. Steven Drozd, along with being responsible for the Bonham drums, went through and layered each slightly detuned midi part individually, as if they were pieces in the orchestra. It's a great effect, but if you want to hear the real thing a couple years ago they did a whole album recording with a full symphony at red rocks. As one of your comments said, they are studio wizards for sure.
One I have always thought you would like, but never suggested is in a somewhat similar vein. "The Quotidian Beast" by Phosphorescent. Structured chaos.
Fun fact: The Flaming Lips have been making music for 40 years so part of their ‘70s sound is influenced by what they grew up with.
Flaming Lips are really cool, great live band, but you caught my interest on the Mr Bungle "Carousel" reaction. I have a request, er two, as I'm sure do many others. The band is Menomena, the song is "The Late Great Libido". They're from Portland. I'm in TX so not trying to pimp Portland, buuut, I thought another Portland band, The Builders and the Butchers have an interesting composition in "I Broke the Vein"
Now you should check out Tripping Daisy next!✌️
reminded me of Zappa and also Pavement
I don't think it is really a concept album, but all their stuff sounds like it is part of something grander. It's more just their sound. That being said. The Soft Bulletin is a great front-to-back listen. Definitely my favourite Lips album. They are also my favourite band I've seen live. I've seen them several times and each time was unique and amazing. I think you almost have to see them live to get what they are about.
Those aren't real strings, those are layered detuned MIDI strings played on keyboards by the band members. Somehow that's even more impressive to me than if they had actually arranged an orchestra and recorded it.
Check out zaireeka, 4 cds to be played simultaniously. Recorded along with this album. The more experimental stuff wound up on zaireeka.
