The band playing at his party is Oingo Boingo, headed by Danny Elfman. Elfman went on from that band to become one of the most prolific movie composers of our time. This young Millenial is evolving. A year ago she would have said that this movie didn't "age" well. She's now actually laughing at inappropriate jokes. I'm proud of her.
The Kurt Vonnegut scene always cracks me the hell up. Especially later on when the professor says that the person who wrote the report doesn't know the first thing about Vonnegut haha.

For those that don't know, Vonnegut was famous for his "speculative fiction", specifically "Slaughterhouse Five". Which was based upon his experience in WWII where, as a PoW, he had to help clear up the bodies and debris from the Dresden bombing.
From what i heard it was based on his nephew who wrote about him and the paper got the same response
Rodney Dangerfield was a comic in his own lane. As he entered the hospital for a surgery he would not live through, a reporter asked him how long he was going to be there. He replied “If things go well, a couple of weeks. If not, then a couple of hours” 😅😂🤣

The kid at the beginning was the older brother in The Wonder Years. He was also in Back To The Future, Pee Wee's Big Adventure, and a bunch of other things everyone forgot he was in. This movie actually has quite a few famous people in it, including Kurt Vonnegut and Danny Elfman.
He's also in Monster Squad.
Jason Hervey.. also he was a fixture in WCW wrestling for a little bit.. even dated one of the hottest female personalities.

The blonde professor played by Sally Kellerman was the best known for her role as "Hotlips" Hoolihan in the movie "M.A.S.H." and the yelling teacher was Sam Kinisen, who caught his start through Rodney Danger field. Sadly, he died in a car accident shortly after getting married.
I thought Sally looked really good.
6:25 This actress's name is Terry Farrell. On _Star Trek: Deep Space Nine,_ she plays Jadzia Dax. Her presence in this movie is the reason they played it at a _convention_ I once went to. It was my first acquaintance with this movie and was _immediately_ charmed by Rodney Dangerfield.
Recently, it was pointed out to me that _Robert Picardo_ has a brief part here as _well._ I know him as the holographic doctor from _Star Trek: Voyager,_ though that series hadn't _started,_ yet.
Rodney's wife in the movie was also a Romulan Senator in DS9, and a crapload of 80s horror/action movies, Adrienne Barbeau. I'm glad someone else noticed The Doctor 😊

Sam Kinison (the screaming history teacher) is doing his schtick from his standup act, where he just builds in outrage until he's screaming at the audience. He was amazing, but he died in a car accident in early 1992. I know the exact date because I was in college and I broke my ankle. As I was in the hospital and they were giving me the gas to put me under, one of the nurses said to the others, "Oh, Sam Kinison just died." Last thing I said before losing consciousness: "Don't give me his doctor!"
Sam’s guest appearance on Married with Children as an angel is absolutely one of the most hilarious things I’ve ever seen!
Make sure your grandkids know that story.
His "technique" was developed while a preacher at a young age. His entire family was travelling preachers (like you'd see in tents). Apparently he was prolific at it.
His comedy was so dark. I remember he use to read the obits from the local paper on the people not coming to his show. Also loved his bit on the droughts and starving people of Africia. instead of sending food is to send uhuals to pack them up to where the water is so they can grow food. You can't grow anything in the fuckin desert.

The reason someone splashes water at the bottom (or sometime a sprinkler is used) is so that the diver has a visual reference point as to where the surface of the water is. From those heights all you see is the bottom of the pool.
You know what? I've been a lifelong swimmer (always was better in the water than on land) and I NEVER knew that! I've always wondered what the little spigot under the board/platform was, but I always dismissed it as some sort of method for recirculating the water.
I think it also breaks the surface tension of the water for the dives from the highest platform so they don't get injured

One of the better comedies of the 80's, great script, poignant in a few places, Sam Kinison was making Dangerfield crack up, you can see him shaking in that scene and you can also see the blonde student he was yelling at previously, put a hand over her mouth to stifle laughter. Kinison was larger than life, a preacher who became a comic, who was tragically killed by a drunk driver. Downey's character is also memorable, the guy who will be your best friend for life as long as you accept his little quirks. If you get asked to do another film with Dangerfield, "Easy Money" has one-liners just like this, and a funny, blue-collar oriented script with Joe Pesci in an earlier role.

Rodney Dangerfield was such a national treasure. Dunno why but the way he delivered his stuff always made it absolutely hilarious. He was like the kind of uncle you have who could tell a story and making it funny without even trying. :D And by the way, the guy who plays Jason is Keith Gordon. He was also in "Christine" 3 years earlier, which was based on a story by Stephen King. And Valerie was played by Terry Farrell, who later became very well known as Jadzia Dax in "Star Trek - Deep Space Nine" and ofc i had a major crush on her and still do x3
Don't forget William Zabka is the top diver, he plays Johnny in the Karate Kid and Cobra Kai
If you haven't read it (and you probably have) I highly recommend Dangerfield's autobiography It's Not Easy Bein' Me. He alternates between jokes and some really serious stories of his growing up and career, and it all balances nicely. In a way the sadness behind the humor makes the humor even funnier.

14:01 Yes, Ashleigh, millions of people did and still do go to the library and study. It’s a quiet place where you can concentrate on research (reading) and writing. It’s also very relaxing even when you’re not studying.
I spent a lot of time reading and writing papers in the library. In the pre-internet, card catalog days, it was convenient to be where all the reference material was. And I took wonderful naps on the couches in the smoking (!) lounge. 😄
Not to mention in the pre-internet days the library was the place to find info on stuff when you parents old encyclopedia set at home wasn’t enough.

Spent a lot of time studying in the library with study groups. We'd reserve a small room.

I was in college when this came out and not only was one of my professors at a party I went to she was the host of the party and the party itself was actually part of the final for the class. It was a Fundamentals of Acting class. Everyone performed a scene from a play as their "final" then afterwards the professor held a party where everyone had to stay in character for the first hour they were there. How well you stayed in character was part of the grade for your scene.
Arts teachers are cool though. Back in the day, I played a couple gigs outside of school with one of my music teachers.

Two of the iconic movie sidekicks appear in this movie, both Paulie from "Rocky" and Otis from "Superman."
The familiar-looking kid who played young Thornton at the beginning was Jason Herve - who's probably most famous for playing Fred Savage's older brother on the original Wonder Years series. But you are probably remembering him from Pee-Wee's Big Adventure, where he played the kid actor who was in the movie where they used Pee-Wee's bike as a prop.
His personal secretary who he sent to take notes was played by Edie McClurg, you probably remember her from Ferris Bueller's Day Off where she played the principal's secretary or maybe Planes, Trains, and Automobiles where she played the car rental lady in a scene with Steve Martin.
The band who played at their party was Oingo Boingo, whose frontman, Danny Elfman, also wrote the score for this movie and wrote the score for Batman (1989), Pee-Wee's Big Adventure, and basically every Tim Burton movie ever.
Also was Lorraine's brother in Back to the Future who was wearing the coonskin cap at the dinner table and thought that Marty was rich b/c they had two TV sets. And also the kid who said, "what's a rerun?"

This was the first thing I ever saw Robert Downey Jr. appear in, and he was a standout. Audiences really loved his character, and you can tell why he became a rising star after this movie.
I think his role in Weird Science was the first one that I remember. He stood out in that one, too.
@@utility63 Yeah he was in a film called Tuff Turf which me and my friends loved, but it was Weird Science where we really took notice of him. I think Back To School was responsible for him being cast as the main actor in The Pick Up Artist.

For an alternative take on teen RDJ, I recommend Less Than Zero. Same timeframe, and he’s smart alecky, but then he’s not. I’ll say no more!

An almost really good movie.
He plays an assistant to a lawyer that sometimes accepts payment in weed. A woman wants to hire him because her son is in jail for murder. Yes he did kill someone in prison but that was self defence. But she just knows that her son was innocent of the murder that put him I prison.
It's based on a true story.

The real killer was a police informant and they cover up for him.
I love this movie, and it's so good to see some people finally reacting to it.
As a member of the "tall and fat" community, I have no problems with the beginning of this movie, because Rodney's character isn't being mean spirited. We could use some more stores that carry the larger sizes, honestly. And yes, that lady did look like a pool table.
So many fun actors playing fun roles in this one. And an appearance by Oingo Boingo, a great band sadly mostly unknown to the younger generations.
Oingo Boingo is one of the best forgotten bands from the 80s. One of the best bands, period. That was Danny Elfman singing.
This was, along with "Ruthless People", one of the great lost comedic gems of 1986. Rodney Dangerfield is at the top of his game here, as is his comedic protege, Sam Kinison (the history professor). You may recongnize the head diver (William Zabka) from The Karate Kid.
And not to make requests for Hallo-Beans yet, but actor Keith Gordon (Jason) is in John Carpenter's 1983 movie adaptation of Stephen King's "Christine".
Keith Gordon was also in Dressed to Kill, which would be another great one for Hallobeans.
Keith Gordon also plays my fave character in Jaws 2, which also works for Hallobeans.....

Fun Fact: The band "Oingo Boingo" (shown during the dorm-room party thrown by Thornton) was a real band. "Dead Man's Party" was a real song played on the radio and the lead singer is none other than Danny Elfman of "Nightmare Before Christmas" fame - he wrote the music and was the speaking and singing voice of Jack the Pumpkin King.

And now that you've watched Ned Beatty in yet another movie (Dean in this movie, Lex Luthor's assistant Otis in "Superman: The Movie"), I need to once again voice the idea that you should watch "Deliverance." It would almost qualify for Hallobeans, really, but it's more of a survival drama. Once you've seen it, a TON of references you're missing will make sense. No more needs be said.
Yes, back when this channel was about watching classic movies Deliverance would have been a must see.

15:53 the reason that kid was splashing the water was to soften the water landing for the divers. The softened water reduces the surface tension and allows the diver to safely enter the water without injuring him/herself.
Nope. Its so they can see the surface. Otherwise you can lose site of where the top of the water is. Now they use a water spray device, or an underwater bubble machine.

@@Reggie2000 The water spray create ripples across the water which then makes it easier for divers to see how far they are from the surface of the pool and they can therefore time their moves to end right before they enter the water.
Water being sprayed onto the pool helps the divers to see where the surface is, as with the diving board being 10m up, they can only see the floor of the pool from where they are standing.
The ripples created by the spray then allows the divers to judge the distance more accurately and make sure they enter the water at a safe angle.
As divers are travelling at around 35mph when they hit the surface, they can be seriously injured if they enter the water at a bad angle.
Other safety precautions for divers include minimum and maximum pool depths for optimum water pressure,

I can't even tell you how many times I saw this in the theater. I remember my dad laughing so hard during Rodney's dive. One joke you missed because it was from the 80's is when the cops brought beer to the party it was Miller and Miller Lite who had hysterical commercials with a huge cast of characters including Rodney Dangerfield. This was my introduction to, and becoming a fan, of the late Sam Kinison (Professor Turgerson). The movie also introduced me to Oingo Boingo's great song Dead Mans Party.
The little boy you recognized at the beginning is from The Wonder Years, and Thornton's secretary was the Principal's Secretary from Ferris Buehler's Day Off, as well as the Car Rental lady in Planes Trains and Automobiles.
I actually saw Kurt Vonnegut at Butler U in Indy, his home town. He gave a very interesting talk. Another time, I was working at a liquor store. We had to card everyone, even people who were CLEARLY over 21. One time, we saw a woman with the name Vonnegut. She was his cousin.

You know the secretary from John Hughes movies: Ferris Bueller's Day Off and Planes, Trains and Automobiles.

This is such a great comedy. Rodney definitely reached his peak with this and "Caddyshack", but his earlier "Easy Money" is also a pretty funny one as well.
I was a Computer Info Systems student at the University of Evansville, but since it was also a strong liberal arts place, they asked you to take elective courses outside your degree. One I decided to take was Philosophy of Religion from Dr. Conolly. There were 8 students in this course in a room under the bell tower and I was the only one from the Engineering school. Near the end of the semester, he invited us all to his house for a meal and to watch "Love and Death" by Woody Allen (a comedy set in Russia during Napoleonic times with many philosophy and literature related call backs and bits). He was my favorite professor and I was glad to have two classes by him (the required Philosophy of Science course was when I first encountered him).

Yes--this is such a classic funny film. Great cast. Rodney Dangerfield, in addition to appearances in films, did a lot of stand-up routines about different ways he's been insulted: "I don't get no respect," was his famous line. He's hilarious, and I'm so glad that you are recognizing these actors from other films. Yes, his secretary showing up with her typewriter (*correction: stenograph machine) in class to take notes for him is so funny She was the next-door neighbor in a show I loved as a kid, called "Small Wonder", and she used a funny catchphrase in that. Her other memorable role was in "Ferris Bueller's Day Off, as the school secretary there. Yes, a young Robert Downey, Jr. He was in a lot of 1980s films. Sam Kinison was the loud instructor, and he was a stand-up comedian who performed the same way on stage as he did in this film. Hilarious. Terry Ferrell played the part of Valerie, and if you ever watch Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, she plays a character, Jadzia Dax, and if you watch the TV show "Becker", which stars Ted Danson, her character is "Reggie." Her blond boyfriend in Back To School, was William Zabka, and he was in "The Karate Kid" films. So many well-known actors in Back To School, but the kid whom you recognized during the black-and-white beginning was Jason Hervey, who was in Back to the Future, in the 1950s. When Marty is having dinner with his teenage mother's family, he meets his young aunt and uncles, and Jason Hervy was the kid wearing the coon skin cap. You might also recognize his from "The Wonder Years", the original show. He was Kevin's brother. Great video and review!

Ooh, Ashleigh! First, Buc-ee's is to gas stations what Bass Pro Shops is to the hunting and fishing aisle at Wal-Mart. It's the kind of place you build your vacation around. Second, the band was Oingo Boingo who recorded and performed Dead Man's Party for this film's soundtrack. They are IMO the most underrated band of the 80s, they also did the Weird Science theme, and while you might not recognize the lead singer's face, you definitely know his name....Danny Elfman. Third, I want to request a movie that I'm obsessed with lately. Once Upon a Time in the West. It's a masterpiece.
I second that motion. Once Upon a Time in the West is my favorite movie of all time. I'm a bit worried Ashleigh would lose patience with it before the opening train station scene is finished though. I think the pacing of the movie is perfect but I know for the younger generations out there the pace is downright continental drift speed compared to the movies of today.

This is absolutely my favorite movie to watch and that isn't hyperbole. I literally could watch it back to back and be thoroughly entertained every time. I'm not trying to say it's the greatest movie of all time, but for me, it's my favorite movie ever.

Former Cracker Barrel employee here...CB started their corporate life as gas stations which evolved into a gas station and store which evolved into gas station, store and restaurant. Eventually they just dropped the gas station as the store and restaurant made more money.

15:49 Ashleigh, the guy in the water, splashing, is basically making the water surface become more mushi and softer. That makes the impact on the water less hard and it also hurts less. Because the surface tension of the water surface can REAALLLY hurt when you splash into it straight like that. Especially from a certain height. :) So the water splasher basically saves you from getting nasty injuries. Would otherwise feel like hitting concrete. Sometimes you see that during sports events when they have something like a whipool bubbler right at the Splash Impact area for these divers.
From what my father told me at the time…. Breaking up the surface also allowed to diver to visual gauge his distance to the surface, AND diffuse any reflection from a light source that could distract or disorientate the dive
It also makes it easier for the diver to see the surface of the water.
IIRC, it also helps disturb the surface of the water so that divers can more accurately gauge where the water begins and how quickly they need to slow down once in the water. Or maybe that was just the acrobatic high divers I saw at the county fair this summer!

I've always loved that at the core of this movie is just a dad trying to connect with and support his son. Like, its a funny premise, but it's actually got some heart to it.
That's what makes the movie work. Under the one liners it has heart.

You are killing me Ashley! Yes, we went to the library to study. We didn't have any internet at that time. We used a set of books called Encyclopedia Brittanica and then a lot of the information in the library was on microfiche, small film slides of newspaper articles or books, so we spent a lot of time looking through, basically, a microscope at information that may be relevant to our topic. If I had a computer and internet in college, it would have been so simple, almost a joke.
The splashing if water is to give the diver a visual reference of where the surface of the water is to judge their entry.

The kid at the beginning was Lorraine's brother in Back to the Future, sitting at the table when Marty is having dinner with them. He was a friend of my cousin, and was at my cousin's bar mitzvah.
And in case, it wasn't obvious, yes, that really was Kurt Vonnegut playing himself. Y'ever read any Vonnegut? He's pretty fun. I'd recommend Cat's Cradle for a first Vonnegut book to read. It reads pretty fast.
