Solar powered motor to reset weights for no light generation. The idea that you and most thinkers have, would work, just needs to be put together. Nice video.
Here’s my thought. What if someone built a world class gym, obviously no free weights, but lots of machines. Membership is free, so everyone can work out as often as they like. It’s wouldn’t be enough, but… I’ve never put pen to paper, but it seems like a fun dream.
I’ve put a lot of thought into this for a number of years. This system is not really a generator but a battery. You put power in and take it out later. Whether you “reset” the weight using wind power, solar, etc., or manually, you can’t get out more than you put in. There’s a trade off to mechanical advantage. If you use a 30:1 pulley train to make 1000lbs feel like 30lbs. and raise it ten feet, you would have to pull 300 feet of cable. That seems like a lot but you could attach your generator directly to your pulley train and pull it by hand and store the power in a lead acid battery and it would be the same amount of power that you would get back if you let the weight turn the generator.
I don't believe that it would equal the same amount of power, as you can't charge a lead acid battery as quickly as you can charge a capacitor. There are also some aspects of my design that I haven't fully explained yet that I will go into once I have a working model that's been tested. I refer to it as a generator because it will work similarly to a wind turbine. As you said though, whether you use wind, solar, or a weight the result is the same. The weight must continually be reset to produce power, just as you are reliant on the wind or the presence of sunlight to power other systems.
@@Motionmagneticsjust a random ideea,what if you used a spring that goes down with the load and pushes the load back up up once it's down,if you could introduce an automatic way of removing the weight for the spring to do it's job to spin the gears in the opposite directions,I never studied mechanics but I suppose to bring the spring all the way down you would need more weight once it reaches a certain point? And to bring it back up the force applied need to be more etc? Anyway this seems like a good ideea in my imagination I don't know if it would work in real world,something like an automatic hooking thing that captures the weight at the top and releases it at the bottom,but for that to work you will need a different weight everytime to do it unless there's some work around which I can't think of right now,if you can generate power while the gears spins in the opposite direction and use that power to operate a motor which uses pulleys to remove the load off the gears and put it back down using a timer wouldn't the energy produced be more than what you use..sorry if its a childish ideea but ij my mind it works somehow haha

Your on the right track. just remember to keep simplifying each part of your design to reduce amount of materials needed or to eliminate all together. I use recycled materials so it's a lot fun imagining how to integrate systems designed for other uses and repurpose for new uses. I went both mechanical weight, gear and pulley then with battery assist both worked great. Once you get yours built you'll be able to downsize and simplify even more. Great to see younger mind's with the yearn to learn and discover
I always envisioned a vehicle garage system. You park the car at the top (second floor) and over night it runs the gravity generator and in the morning its at the bottom (first floor). charging batteries over night.
Except the gasoline spent driving the car up the hill, either arriving at home or leaving in the morning likely negates any gain from 3000 lbs dropping 120 inches. Do the math... compared to the cost... risk... insurance liability, and you will find that payback exceeds life expectancy. Engineering school 101
@@invent5540 Not exactly. Look up some of the commercial proposals for gravity generators. The two-story garage idea would work on similar principles to some of them I've seen. The average car weighs over 4000 lbs, dropped from 10 to 12 feet with the correct gear set up to rotate a large alternator for several hours you could produce a great deal of electricity. And driving up a ramp or around to a higher elevation in the same property would require very little gas. It wouldn't necessarily be free, but it would certainly be efficient.
Resetting the weight by displacing water would be the most efficient way. You could use ram pumps to fill reservoir that lifts the weight. You then have the water that has potential and the weight has potential. Water could turn turbines and the weight could turn a generator.
@Frank H -Hi Frank. Apparently you've been reading my mind. I haven't yet toyed with a ram pump but have been considering the possibilities of what you described . My idea is to initially allow rainwater to accumulate in an elevated tank, as high and as large as manageable. Then allowing a controlled measure of water to drop out of it to run small turbine, leaving some % of drop beyond it and flow into a ram pump. Water loss from the action of that pump is a concern, back pressure to the turbine is a concern, and a balanced rate of flow that provides the dynamic for both the turbine and ram pump also comes to mind. I'm not asking for any of your trade secrets, but it does appear you are an experienced craftsman/engineer on this topic and would respectfully appreciate your take on this (probably bad) idea. 👍
@@markhonea2461 I miss a lot of notifications so here I am a year later..... I simply look at these systems as energy storage systems. A ram pump can transfer some energy for "free"(natural source) if you have enough head pressure. Storing this energy higher than the source increases the potential and efficiency though it takes a lot more energy than you will ever recover. If you have enough head pressure a Archimedes' screw would be your most efficient way to move water high than the source
The problem I've ran into trying to design a gravity generator is the power. Regardless of mechanical advantage, you cannot generate more power than is put in. The power is a unit of energy per time, and all of the energy in a gravitational generator comes from the potential energy of the weight, which is equal to mass x gravity x height of the weight. These work for clocks due to the tiny amount of energy required. The height/weight required to power devices for any real length of time becomes way too large in home use settings. Industrial use can use enormous weights at very tall heights to offset these disadvantages. My home uses about 30kWh per day, which translates to 108,000,000 Joules of energy. To get this much energy out from gravity, assuming the weight is at 10 meters would take 1,102,040 kg if done once, and you can divide it by however many cycles you'd want. Assuming a reasonable weight value of 100kg at 10m and 100 cycles a day would only produce 980,000 Joules if there is no loss (which you should assume maybe 50% efficiency, which may even be too high). This translates into 0.272kWh per day
@@Motionmagnetics It gave me a bit of a headache dragging up all the lessons I learned back in college to remember the relevant physics behind it all, but the calculation in the end is a very simple one. The total Energy you can add manually to a gravity generator is a measure of Force times some distance. The only advantage a pulley gives is that you can use a reduced force at the cost of adding distance. Since in the end the power is ultimately coming from yourself, you might as well turn the generator by hand, as adding steps will only introduce points of lower efficiency and reduce the overall energy output. The only way I can see a gravity generator working is if there is an alternative source (the sun, moving stream of water, wind) that is providing the power to raise the weight. This is why you find very few videos about gravity generators and many about gravity batteries.
@@benjaminhaymore3423 Adding an alternative source to reset it is certainly one way to go. Yes, with a pulley system, you have to pull the weight a greater distance to reset it. Mechanical advantage always requires giving something up to get something in return. Trying to pull hundreds of pounds without pulleys would be ridiculously difficult though. If I can convert that to the equivalent of 50 lbs, however, I'm perfectly fine with pulling the weight a greater distance.

I'm not sure if I'm going to end up using them in the final design. I'm currently printing and testing a type of gear that uses belts as a possible alternative. The reason being is that with 3D-printed gears most of the tension is placed on 3 or 4 pegs of the gear, whereas a belt evenly distributes the tension across nearly the entire gear. Of course, with belts, you could get slippage. Whatever I end up using though I'll share the files so you can make your own. You must have heard my mental scream last spring as our power was out for an extended time and our generator was possessed by something that would make it turn off as soon as you walk away. Since I make tree sky and loft webs I was thinking about using the weight of people in the web being the weight that generates the power to run the blacklights.

The pulley advantage design for re-lifting the source weight is solid. Of course the time to lift it will be long with each mechanical advantage added, but personally I don't mind lifting it IF it has a long running time while still providing significant usable electrical current UNDER LOAD!
You can add a motor to lift the weight and design a circuit to automatically start a motor for lift the weight with the help of pully and turned off after lifting the weight. Dropping heavy weight will produce electricity whereas lifting weight with the help of pully and motor will give you an advantage to save electricity. So your power generation and power consumption will have the difference.
I also created my own design for that during my undergraduate years (2020) and used it as my thesis. It's very ambitious, and now I'm interested in innovating it.
I don't see addressed often, regarding key features of a gravity battery machine suitable for a residence, that if creating a machine that is more than a toy, then the magnitude of the weight(s) objects involved will be considerable. So it seems to me that each weight should be moving up and down while supported by a robustly constructed ramp or track and not simply hanging in the air at the end of a cable. To accomplish minimum or zero friction on the ramp, the weight can be levitated and steered by a suitable arrangement of repelling magnets. Also I don't see other commenters often acknowledge that the machine might be designed to handle more than one weight (whose combined masses provide the necessary mass for meeting the machine's energy output goal) and thereby reduce the possible damage that would result from a failure in the machine's support of a given weight object.

I gathered up some materials from vehicles like axles from 4 x4 front diff n such to simplify making the gravity machine improving on it since it is like 70 years later . I can now make my own gears but life’s catching up on me and still gota survive . I’ve always loved magnets n they have saved my but recovering tool n hardware .bulldozer n skidders are the worst when you’re greasy mits drop something lol .

I’m quite excited to see your take on this. For the last couple of years I’ve been going through the thought process of building one of these. I have a small UTV I could use to drag a fairly long rope after the poly system. I think I could really work with some fairly extraordinary weight
On my homefront, I have about a 100ft elevation difference across the acreage. There are periods when I have excess power, say my 30kwh battery bank is full and my solar panels are generating more power than my loads. I would like to be able to shunt power to some kind of gravity-based system, acting as a "secondary battery', such that allowing a mass at the top elevation of the property to fall to the lower elevation of the property recovers /most/ of the power that I spent moving that mass to the top of the hill, which I only do when I have excess, essentially free power that would otherwise be lost. Water is probably the easiest way to do this, but I have also imagined using something like concrete eco-blocks that are two tons each.
@@Motionmagnetics Yeah, another project, lol! ;) Well at least I got the ram pump working last year. I did it to irrigate a garden but in the process I also figured I could have some bursty power by accumulating water in tanks on the hillside, filled continuously (if slowly) by the rampumps, then discharge rapidly through a turbine. Beyond the ram pump, I think "phase change" is an ideal way to get water up the hill, assuming a closed system, where the base reservoir has a parabolic solar furnace or some such that evaporates the water off to the top of the hill again. I swear it's not a giant still, Mr. ATF! :) Finally, Winter is an interesting time as we get a deep freeze. Water can fracture entire hillsides of solid rock if it gets into the cracks and freezes, due to the expansion of it. There's a generator concept lurking here where you exploit the expansion of water. Maybe you don't power your home with these technologies, but it's actually quite challenging to run say a 25 watt load continuously year-round in the Northern latitudes in the middle of nowhere (beyond the grid). if you use a solenoid with a friction brake on the gear output tied to voltage monitoring setup on the caps when the voltage is high stall the weight and let the flywheel spin when the voltage starts to drop let the weight fall tell the voltage recovers.
Here's a tip. When magnetic fields interfere with another, you have not only 1 dimension available, you have 3 dimensions, use them. You can always arrange the magnets to be somewhere else, where they don't interfere if you like.
Gravity Generators are used by some industries as power storage. In the event more amps are required, the weight is released and power is generated until the weight reaches the bottom. A great idea for power storage, however, to raise the weight back up, it does take external energy. Why? If you raise a weight of 100kg (1000 newtons) a distance of 1 meter off the ground, you have to do the same amount of work whether you use a pulley or not: you have to move the same force over the same distance. If you use a pulley and reduce the force you're using by a quarter, you still have to do the same amount of work. It's just that you have to pull the end of the rope four times further to make each of the four supporting sections of rope rise by the same amount.
I agree with most of that. I would just also point out that you can design the pulley system to reduce the force of lifting the weight by much more than a quarter. Yes, that will also increase the distance you have to wind the wire to reset the weight, but that's acceptable to me for what I'm building.
@@Motionmagnetics The work required to raise the weight with a pulley requires about the same amount of work as lifting without a pulley. In fact, there is resistance between the rope and pulley, so more work is required although the resistance is very small. Yes, let's claim 1/4 of the work required to raise the pulley, that work needs to be applied during all the lifting which matches the work it would take to raise without a pulley, plus any resistance caused by the pulleys. Therefore, it is not possible to raise a weight without external power. There is no free lunch...
@@Motionmagnetics Yes, you are correct there is no free lunch. The weight would have to be raised using external power as is done with huge gravity generators. These are static until required, to add more power, when required. For instance, the "ENERGY VAULT" can be used for up to 4 hours during power demand. How effective it is in times of high power demand, IDK. Lots of questions have been asked whether this is a viable solution to add power to the grid during times of demand. Essentially a "Gravity Battery."
Stairs. Get rid of them. Use fire pole. With platform. Bike cranks hand spun raise the platform. When u go down, it winds up the weight for the generator, this powers the lights. If you get 2 people to crank up the platform and put a heavy weight on it, you get enough power to make toast. Or cook some eggs.
Have you ever thought about working on eliminating back emf using a sacrificial thinner wire as a closed circuit between each larger wire's coil layer? I always thought that would create an electrical "ball bearing effect" so to speak... which would make reversing direction of current flow way easier in generators and motors. I'd love to hear your thoughts on that concept.
It's not a bad idea but surely of it was really good we would have seen it all over the place or know about it by now. The thing is for motor generators you work with things like reluctance which is the resistance to motion in a magnetic field usually the shape of the coil determines the efficiency, due to the right hand rule. When one coil pass by one field there is a zone of highest propulsion but as it nears the edge there is the fact that thing is moving in a circle and the corner will have force line pointing in opposite directions. So you face trapezoidal or wedge shapes coils such as those found in an hdd.
I would recomend you go for a planatary gear design where the small gear is on the inside of the big gear. that would give you more toothe contact, less wear.
Did you already assemble it? what are the results? How much power did you get out of it for how long? I guess it would have to be scaled up to be useful, just wonder how much?
I started about 10years ago with my system I stared over 6 times, back to basics just in case my family needed to do maintenance Anyone could build and maintain it Rear mountain bike rear wheels (8-12 if only using chain to multiply the speed ) 3 - 4 wheels using the entire outer rim to hub for faster speeds On a tree I hung a pulley 5 gallon bucket ( pulley system to a drill to pull back up) On 1 full charge battery (13min to fully charge dewalt) I’ve raised the weight more that x100 times. So I stopped counting it’s more than enough The weight / bucket takes 35 to drop 35 feet In that time the best system I found is a racing alternator GM style 1 wire 100 to 300 amp $120 to $145 with a 4year warranty Batteries- the dewalt portable power stations are the best Battery quality battery technology and any home dep warranty 4 batteries in 1 unit 1 battery goes out just change it move on NOT replacing the entire unit 1 unit for fridge 1 for washer only when in use. 1 unit for water pumps (water tower gravity filtered and fed) 1 unit for inter net tv cell phones walkys router 2 units for all lights and cameras on the property. Been off grid 4 years
Could you design a gravity weight that is filled with water , with a empty counter weight that would be raised to the top and to have the empty counter weight that is eventually filled with water ?
I have had the idea to make a setup with 2 drums attached to both ends of a cable wound around a pulley on a two way bearing the converts the spin of the pulley either way into forward spin and have the drums fill at the top position and spill at the bottom position so that either way the gears turn a constant direction and then have a small water pump to fill a vat the fills the drums at top position. I'm working on getting the materials to build this setup. I would love any input or advice on this from anyone willing to give input.
This is such a great idea. However, I recently came to belief that mechanical advantage doesn't exist in the way we think of it. I'm afraid, the way it works is: You have a flywheel with 500 Energy, now you can slowly take that energy and feed it into your mechanical advantage, ultimately getting 500 Energy out. However, if you don't use any mechanical advantage, you also get 500 Energy out of the flywheel. Even though, in mechanical advantage you're dealing with let's say 2 times lower forces means that you have to do it twice as long. But, if it's possible at all to generate free energy it needs to be from an unknown source, maybe we overlooked something. Can't wait to see the results, you're definitely getting a nice runtime I believe
Two things: would it be fairly easy to add a solar panel to rewind the weight. When there is to little power the weight can fall; using a long gear box would allow the magnetic gears to be staggared to avoid interference.
Yes. Some systems already make use of solar in conjunction with gravity. That's exactly how I believe it could be done. The more gears you add though, the stronger the magnets need to be.
I would want a "wind up" system like this for powering huge ceiling fans at a low rpm. Such big fans create enough drag that it will run for hours at a time!
You should have 2 weights so that way when your resetting one weight the other will start producing power also you should use a wind mill to reset the weight for you
for your gear drive I would use an inner drum sprocket with outer tooth drive gear/ you get less energy loss between the gears/ more efficient face to face contact. AKA a sun gear used in transmissions. With three low ton high transfers you could turn your system into a 2 to 8 hour clock. think ring gears for the drive.
I like your idea, just a quick thought instead of using pulleys maybe consider a worm gear, you could use a drivetrain from a electric wheelchair the drive assembly has a disengage so when it reaches the top you would be able to disengage worm gear allow gravity to drive your mechanism. Good Luck !
One of my earlier designs made use of a worm gear. It's in one of the clips in the video. I removed it because I didn't have a disengaging mechanism for it. I'll take a look at those drive trains. Thanks!
there are gravity generators already in use, as energy storage systems. Energy created by solar during the day, is used to 'charge'/lift the weight, then overnight the gravity storage system releases its kinetic energy thru a generator.
You know something that 1 of your systems could be very good to take on a camping trip where you can throw a rope over a tree a 100 feet tall. Get some rocks, put him in AA Neta, some sort and pull them up and run your generator with that. So therefore it's actually portable
use memory metals that will pull weights up when wire is hot....then lower the weights down and gravity generate when wire is cold.....just gotta heat the wires up and they can pull about 1.4 tons per square inch of metal used in the wire when brought up to the temp for memorized phase to activate (which can be as low as warm/hot water) wire would be in a chamber filled with gas which can be chilled or heated up quickly and efficiently to switch between the wires memorized and regular states (wire or any type of spring made from the shape-memory alloy) spring gets hot - lifts up heavy stuff. wire gets cold, loses "coiled" memorized state becomes flexible...lowers weight spring is in flexible vaccuum chamber filled with chilled or heated refrigerants
Gravity storage system is very good idea, but the design of gravity generator is just key point for success. You should use the regenerating braking system instead of mechanical gear control.

Look at Big Ben's mechanism. And as far as gears go. With proper lubrication they will run fine for years if not decades. There is a dozen other things that tend to break before gears wear out. Factory Maintenance is my profession.

I thought about this while contemplating the design that used 2 barrels connected to each other by a pulley system, where one would decend as it became heavier than the other, which would subsequently be rising, due to a seep valve under each barrel, that would release small mounts of water as it contacts the ground. This causes an up and down motion which could be utilized to spin a generator.. and of course the problem would be, how would the barrels get refilled once their levels became too low to perform the function of perpetuating the up and down motion. I wondered if, in addition to the generation of power produced by the motion, couldn't an other smaller generator be utilized to charge a battery bank who's sole purpose is to run a pump for short periods of time to keep the barrels full of water? We could use simple motor controls for this like level controls and pump contractors. The pump would come on as needed, and the charge would be restored during it's dormant periods. What do you think?
Unfortunately I dropped physics class after 1 year, although I was always doing physics at home with bicycle bulbs magnets batteries and copper wire, So I never learned about the advantage of a pulley. Around 2007 I rediscovered my love for experimenting with these componenents and I had to make up 25 years of lost time. I just finished my steam punk brushless motor using a figdit spinner . Im using a electronic cigarette lion battery you can find in the streets, Runs just fine still wthout having to charge it with that little module.

Set up your motor and gears on the ground. Obviously you want one rotation on the input to equal very high rotations at the output (the motor). Problem with that is it gets very difficult to turn because of decreased leverage and also the friction. The weight will obviously be the thing that attempts to turn it but there are some extra things you can do to make it way better. Use a large lever set at 45 degrees from the floor (gears) and set the weight on that. Huge increased leverage and therefore torque. Less weight will be needed or just keep it the same but get way more power. If course this will take up more room. Use a flywheel on the fastest spinning gear (the last). It will add extra load at first but once it gets going it will help counteract the friction. Once you've readied everything you could manually give it a good few shoves to get everything up to speed. Rather than use many pulleys to hoist the weight up over a longer period of time, perhaps climbing up a ladder and stepping onto a rope with a foot loop and using your entire bodyweight to glide the weight up might be quicker. Not sure about this one though. The hope would be to get the weight up in a matter of seconds, hopefully about 3 repeats, so a 3 to 1 pulley would be needed. Of course everyones bodyweight is different so someone lighter wouldn't be able to do it. Not sure how fast you can go with high pulley setup. Might be able to just charge through it quite quickly. Give yourself a killer tricep workout 🤣.
I've actually designed the rotor to work as a flywheel. And believe it or not, have been using a similar way to explain to people how easy it would be to reset the pulleys by simply putting your foot in a loop and letting your weight do the work. Get out of my head. lol

What a great beginning? On the generator side, Robert Murray Smith has been toying with serpentine coil generators. Take a look. He's saying we can pack more punch into a smaller space. I've done mental exercises with gravity generators but always come up against it with the escape mechanism. My favourite is the old school flat blade air governor seen mostly in the hour strike mechanism of pendulum clocks. My first real world prototype was a 10 foot tall piece of 2 inch square tube with a bicycle sprocket at the top and a old fashioned bench type hand wound grinder body at the bottom with bike chain connecting. I kind of figured inherent friction may be a suitable governor but never found out as life got in the way. I was planning using a garage door counter weight. In my head I envisage a big set up using perma pine poles and a IBC tank which filled with water will weigh 1,000 kilos, 1 tonne and use a simple chain block to raise it. Again how to unhook the chain block and transfer the weight to the machine is a sticking point but nothing that can't be overcome with hooks and ratchets maybe?
160 kg (rating of the cable) at 3m height is about 4600 joules of potential energy.... Or about 1.2 watt hours. Quick look over the pulley block I'll go with 10 loops so can do 1600 kg. Pure paper napkin math this is about the same storage as an 18650.

Might I suggest looking into using a braided Kevlar cord over the mea metal wire. It's lighter, way stronger both in tensile strength and longevity. At any rate I really enjoyed your video. Also, on a side note, as far as the CAD software you use, have you seen the software called "Plasticity?" It might be something you'd like to try out.
Robert Murray-Smith of the Thinking n Tinkering channel recently made a cycloidal magnetic gear set that has a 12:1 ratio. It can handle a lot more torque than a regular one. I wonder how one or more of those would perform in your setup.
I wanted to build one of these but people would be what reset the weight. Imagine going upstairs in your house and when you want to go downstairs use an elevator like device that slowly lowered you down and reset the weight. I thought using the gears from a bike pedals would allow it to be reset at any time or repeatedly.

At the end of the day, the cost in electricity to reset the weight will be more than any maximum power generated by the weight. You should focus on "power input", using dual weights that toggle and some form of direct diversion of "reset power", so it goes directly to power generation. Giving the weights a rest, when possible. Such as capturing wind, door opening and closing, placed heavy objects, footsteps, solar evaporation in a closed system, etc... all small physical actions that suck as individual power generation sources, but collectively, harvested in a system, they are all gains. Use the system as a basic buffer, which it is best suited for, by design. Simple one-way ratchet drives with a counter-clockwise pair, can turn any oscillating action into a singular linear output. Such as a door opening and closing. A platform that lowers and raises after weight is added and then removed. (Walking on a step or platform, to wait or pass. A table you set groceries, tools, clothes onto. A weight on a spring that bounces as your car rides over bumps or a speed-bump that collects power.) Harvest as much as you can, free-ish. A solar boiler that steams water up to a radiator collection bucket that auto-tips to dump when full. All in a closed loop setup so you never run out of water. Obviously, any exercise machines, converting excess resistance into capturing here. (Combined with a bike-fan setup, to aid steam reduction in the prior setup.) Remember two things.... "Keep it stupid-simple", and "Do you even lift bro?" Jumping jacks, hop scotch, stepper machines and shake weights will never be the same! Feed pets on a platform... How much does a dog weigh? How far will it climb to eat? How long does it take them to finish eating, before slowly falling to the ground? PETA may actually approve! Is it legal to put kids in a giant hamster wheel?

I have an idea ! Can It be possible to use Gravity mechanism on Water Cans. Use 3 of such Water Can weights side by side on as many heights as possible say 2nd/3rd Storey of a Building, (Calculation needed here). Install Two (2) Big Water Tanks of shape Rectangular that cover the entire side by side line mechanism of all 3 Water bottles widths, One on Top of where driving gears for these Water bottles mechanism held and Second on bottom beneath these water bottles. Use Gears as you use and link them as if 1st Bottle reach bottom, the 2nd Bottle will reach Mid and when 2nd Bottle reach bottom, the 3rd Bottle reach Mid and all these Water Tanks are linked with Gears mechanism so there is no Timing issue, this setup will always same when run. Water Cans will move from Water Tank to Water Tank as by using a water filling and emptying mechanism, i.e if One bottle hits ground in the bottom Water tank it will empty there and then pull upward for again filling water from the Upper Water Tank installed and for all Water Cans the procedure will repeat. We can use a small motor to fill the Upper and Lower Tank as necessary. I come up with a concept to power everything on Earth and in space it is just that good no bulshit or lies I looked at it for ten years try to figure out it would not work it will not work if it don't get build. if we work together it would be fairly easy to build a free energy or free energy machine. your motor in order to work should be able to lift those weights that will swing between them and after that the motor can carry on its ability to deliver current to the rest of the utilities in the house or whatever you put in it So if the motor does not carry the task of lifting the weights then they will swing between themselves to produce current, i.e. to carry current to the motor through falling movement, then you have not solved anything

I’ve put a lot of thought into this for a number of years. This system is not really a generator but a battery. You put power in and take it out later. Whether you “reset” the weight using wind power, solar, etc., or manually, you can’t get out more than you put in. There’s a trade off to mechanical advantage. If you use a 30:1 pulley train to make 1000lbs feel like 30lbs. and raise it ten feet, you would have to pull 300 feet of cable. That seems like a lot but you could attach your generator directly to your pulley train and pull it by hand and store the power in a lead acid battery and it would be the same amount of power that you would get back if you let the weight turn the generator.
I don't believe that it would equal the same amount of power, as you can't charge a lead acid battery as quickly as you can charge a capacitor. There are also some aspects of my design that I haven't fully explained yet that I will go into once I have a working model that's been tested.
I refer to it as a generator because it will work similarly to a wind turbine. As you said though, whether you use wind, solar, or a weight the result is the same. The weight must continually be reset to produce power, just as you are reliant on the wind or the presence of sunlight to power other systems.

Your on the right track. just remember to keep simplifying each part of your design to reduce amount of materials needed or to eliminate all together. I use recycled materials so it's a lot fun imagining how to integrate systems designed for other uses and repurpose for new uses. I went both mechanical weight, gear and pulley then with battery assist both worked great. Once you get yours built you'll be able to downsize and simplify even more. Great to see younger mind's with the yearn to learn and discover
I always envisioned a vehicle garage system. You park the car at the top (second floor) and over night it runs the gravity generator and in the morning its at the bottom (first floor). charging batteries over night.

@@invent5540 Not exactly. Look up some of the commercial proposals for gravity generators. The two-story garage idea would work on similar principles to some of them I've seen.
The average car weighs over 4000 lbs, dropped from 10 to 12 feet with the correct gear set up to rotate a large alternator for several hours you could produce a great deal of electricity. And driving up a ramp or around to a higher elevation in the same property would require very little gas. It wouldn't necessarily be free, but it would certainly be efficient.
And when you drive the car off,springs reset the whole thing. Brilliant man just brilliant.
Resetting the weight by displacing water would be the most efficient way. You could use ram pumps to fill reservoir that lifts the weight. You then have the water that has potential and the weight has potential. Water could turn turbines and the weight could turn a generator.

@Frank H -Hi Frank. Apparently you've been reading my mind. I haven't yet toyed with a ram pump but have been considering the possibilities of what you described .
My idea is to initially allow rainwater to accumulate in an elevated tank, as high and as large as manageable. Then allowing a controlled measure of water to drop out of it to run small turbine, leaving some % of drop beyond it and flow into a ram pump. Water loss from the action of that pump is a concern, back pressure to the turbine is a concern, and a balanced rate of flow that provides the dynamic for both the turbine and ram pump also comes to mind.
I'm not asking for any of your trade secrets, but it does appear you are an experienced craftsman/engineer on this topic and would respectfully appreciate your take on this (probably bad) idea. 👍
if you live next to a river with enough current, a ram pump is an option... otherwise probably less

@@markhonea2461 I miss a lot of notifications so here I am a year later..... I simply look at these systems as energy storage systems. A ram pump can transfer some energy for "free"(natural source) if you have enough head pressure. Storing this energy higher than the source increases the potential and efficiency though it takes a lot more energy than you will ever recover. If you have enough head pressure a Archimedes' screw would be your most efficient way to move water high than the source
The problem I've ran into trying to design a gravity generator is the power. Regardless of mechanical advantage, you cannot generate more power than is put in. The power is a unit of energy per time, and all of the energy in a gravitational generator comes from the potential energy of the weight, which is equal to mass x gravity x height of the weight. These work for clocks due to the tiny amount of energy required. The height/weight required to power devices for any real length of time becomes way too large in home use settings. Industrial use can use enormous weights at very tall heights to offset these disadvantages.
My home uses about 30kWh per day, which translates to 108,000,000 Joules of energy. To get this much energy out from gravity, assuming the weight is at 10 meters would take 1,102,040 kg if done once, and you can divide it by however many cycles you'd want. Assuming a reasonable weight value of 100kg at 10m and 100 cycles a day would only produce 980,000 Joules if there is no loss (which you should assume maybe 50% efficiency, which may even be too high). This translates into 0.272kWh per day
Does all that calculating ever give you a headache? I'm thinking more of a backup generator, and resetting the weight using pulleys.
@@Motionmagnetics It gave me a bit of a headache dragging up all the lessons I learned back in college to remember the relevant physics behind it all, but the calculation in the end is a very simple one. The total Energy you can add manually to a gravity generator is a measure of Force times some distance. The only advantage a pulley gives is that you can use a reduced force at the cost of adding distance. Since in the end the power is ultimately coming from yourself, you might as well turn the generator by hand, as adding steps will only introduce points of lower efficiency and reduce the overall energy output.
The only way I can see a gravity generator working is if there is an alternative source (the sun, moving stream of water, wind) that is providing the power to raise the weight. This is why you find very few videos about gravity generators and many about gravity batteries.

Yes, with a pulley system, you have to pull the weight a greater distance to reset it. Mechanical advantage always requires giving something up to get something in return. Trying to pull hundreds of pounds without pulleys would be ridiculously difficult though. If I can convert that to the equivalent of 50 lbs, however, I'm perfectly fine with pulling the weight a greater distance.

I'm not sure if I'm going to end up using them in the final design. I'm currently printing and testing a type of gear that uses belts as a possible alternative. The reason being is that with 3D-printed gears most of the tension is placed on 3 or 4 pegs of the gear, whereas a belt evenly distributes the tension across nearly the entire gear. Of course, with belts, you could get slippage. Whatever I end up using though I'll share the files so you can make your own. Keep watching my newer videos and when I have them available I'll post a link to the files.

Seemed like a logical approach to me. I'm guessing a lot of us have thought of similar ideas, as the basics of the design have been around for years.
You must have heard my mental scream last spring as our power was out for an extended time and our generator was possessed by something that would make it turn off as soon as you walk away. Since I make tree sky and loft webs I was thinking about using the weight of people in the web being the weight that generates the power to run the blacklights.

The pulley advantage design for re-lifting the source weight is solid. Of course the time to lift it will be long with each mechanical advantage added, but personally I don't mind lifting it IF it has a long running time while still providing significant usable electrical current UNDER LOAD!

You can add a motor to lift the weight and design a circuit to automatically start a motor for lift the weight with the help of pully and turned off after lifting the weight.
Dropping heavy weight will produce electricity whereas lifting weight with the help of pully and motor will give you an advantage to save electricity. So your power generation and power consumption will have the difference.

I also created my own design for that during my undergraduate years (2020) and used it as my thesis. It's very ambitious, and now I'm interested in innovating it.

I don't see addressed often, regarding key features of a gravity battery machine suitable for a residence, that if creating a machine that is more than a toy, then the magnitude of the weight(s) objects involved will be considerable. So it seems to me that each weight should be moving up and down while supported by a robustly constructed ramp or track and not simply hanging in the air at the end of a cable. To accomplish minimum or zero friction on the ramp, the weight can be levitated and steered by a suitable arrangement of repelling magnets.
Also I don't see other commenters often acknowledge that the machine might be designed to handle more than one weight (whose combined masses provide the necessary mass for meeting the machine's energy output goal) and thereby reduce the possible damage that would result from a failure in the machine's support of a given weight object.

As long as your gear system lowers the weight slow enough that you don't have to constantly reset the device that might be a good way to do it.

On my homefront, I have about a 100ft elevation difference across the acreage. There are periods when I have excess power, say my 30kwh battery bank is full and my solar panels are generating more power than my loads. I would like to be able to shunt power to some kind of gravity-based system, acting as a "secondary battery', such that allowing a mass at the top elevation of the property to fall to the lower elevation of the property recovers /most/ of the power that I spent moving that mass to the top of the hill, which I only do when I have excess, essentially free power that would otherwise be lost.
Water is probably the easiest way to do this, but I have also imagined using something like concrete eco-blocks that are two tons each.
Sound forward thinking on your part. If you end up building something new to add to your system I hope you post it online to inspire otheres.

I did it to irrigate a garden but in the process I also figured I could have some bursty power by accumulating water in tanks on the hillside, filled continuously (if slowly) by the rampumps, then discharge rapidly through a turbine.
Beyond the ram pump, I think "phase change" is an ideal way to get water up the hill, assuming a closed system, where the base reservoir has a parabolic solar furnace or some such that evaporates the water off to the top of the hill again. I swear it's not a giant still, Mr. ATF! :)
Finally, Winter is an interesting time as we get a deep freeze. Water can fracture entire hillsides of solid rock if it gets into the cracks and freezes, due to the expansion of it. There's a generator concept lurking here where you exploit the expansion of water.
Maybe you don't power your home with these technologies, but it's actually quite challenging to run say a 25 watt load continuously year-round in the Northern latitudes in the middle of nowhere (beyond the grid). if you use a solenoid with a friction brake on the gear output tied to voltage monitoring setup on the caps when the voltage is high stall the weight and let the flywheel spin when the voltage starts to drop let the weight fall tell the voltage recovers.

Here's a tip. When magnetic fields interfere with another, you have not only 1 dimension available, you have 3 dimensions, use them. You can always arrange the magnets to be somewhere else, where they don't interfere if you like.
Gravity Generators are used by some industries as power storage. In the event more amps are required, the weight is released and power is generated until the weight reaches the bottom. A great idea for power storage, however, to raise the weight back up, it does take external energy.
Why?
If you raise a weight of 100kg (1000 newtons) a distance of 1 meter off the ground, you have to do the same amount of work whether you use a pulley or not: you have to move the same force over the same distance. If you use a pulley and reduce the force you're using by a quarter, you still have to do the same amount of work. It's just that you have to pull the end of the rope four times further to make each of the four supporting sections of rope rise by the same amount.
I agree with most of that. I would just also point out that you can design the pulley system to reduce the force of lifting the weight by much more than a quarter. Yes, that will also increase the distance you have to wind the wire to reset the weight, but that's acceptable to me for what I'm building.

The work required to raise the weight with a pulley requires about the same amount of work as lifting without a pulley.
In fact, there is resistance between the rope and pulley, so more work is required although the resistance is very small.
Yes, let's claim 1/4 of the work required to raise the pulley, that work needs to be applied during all the lifting which matches the work it would take to raise without a pulley, plus any resistance caused by the pulleys.
Therefore, it is not possible to raise a weight without external power. There is no free lunch...

The weight would have to be raised using external power as is done with huge gravity generators. These are static until required, to add more power, when required.
For instance, the "ENERGY VAULT" can be used for up to 4 hours during power demand. How effective it is in times of high power demand, IDK. Lots of questions have been asked whether this is a viable solution to add power to the grid during times of demand. Essentially a "Gravity Battery."

Stairs. Get rid of them. Use fire pole. With platform. Bike cranks hand spun raise the platform. When u go down, it winds up the weight for the generator, this powers the lights. If you get 2 people to crank up the platform and put a heavy weight on it, you get enough power to make toast. Or cook some eggs.
Have you ever thought about working on eliminating back emf using a sacrificial thinner wire as a closed circuit between each larger wire's coil layer? I always thought that would create an electrical "ball bearing effect" so to speak... which would make reversing direction of current flow way easier in generators and motors.
I'd love to hear your thoughts on that concept.
That's definitely not something I've thought of.
It's not a bad idea but surely of it was really good we would have seen it all over the place or know about it by now. The thing is for motor generators you work with things like reluctance which is the resistance to motion in a magnetic field usually the shape of the coil determines the efficiency, due to the right hand rule. When one coil pass by one field there is a zone of highest propulsion but as it nears the edge there is the fact that thing is moving in a circle and the corner will have force line pointing in opposite directions. So you face trapezoidal or wedge shapes coils such as those found in an hdd.

I would recomend you go for a planatary gear design where the small gear is on the inside of the big gear. that would give you more toothe contact, less wear.

On 1 full charge battery (13min to fully charge dewalt) I’ve raised the weight more that x100 times. So I stopped counting it’s more than enough
The weight / bucket takes 35 to drop 35 feet In that time the best system I found is a racing alternator GM style 1 wire 100 to 300 amp $120 to $145 with a 4year warranty
Batteries- the dewalt portable power stations are the best

I have had the idea to make a setup with 2 drums attached to both ends of a cable wound around a pulley on a two way bearing the converts the spin of the pulley either way into forward spin and have the drums fill at the top position and spill at the bottom position so that either way the gears turn a constant direction and then have a small water pump to fill a vat the fills the drums at top position. I'm working on getting the materials to build this setup. I would love any input or advice on this from anyone willing to give input.

This is such a great idea. However, I recently came to belief that mechanical advantage doesn't exist in the way we think of it. I'm afraid, the way it works is: You have a flywheel with 500 Energy, now you can slowly take that energy and feed it into your mechanical advantage, ultimately getting 500 Energy out. However, if you don't use any mechanical advantage, you also get 500 Energy out of the flywheel. Even though, in mechanical advantage you're dealing with let's say 2 times lower forces means that you have to do it twice as long.
But, if it's possible at all to generate free energy it needs to be from an unknown source, maybe we overlooked something. Can't wait to see the results, you're definitely getting a nice runtime I believe
Two things: would it be fairly easy to add a solar panel to rewind the weight. When there is to little power the weight can fall; using a long gear box would allow the magnetic gears to be staggared to avoid interference.
Yes. Some systems already make use of solar in conjunction with gravity.
That's exactly how I believe it could be done. The more gears you add though, the stronger the magnets need to be.

I would want a "wind up" system like this for powering huge ceiling fans at a low rpm. Such big fans create enough drag that it will run for hours at a time!
You should have 2 weights so that way when your resetting one weight the other will start producing power also you should use a wind mill to reset the weight for you
for your gear drive I would use an inner drum sprocket with outer tooth drive gear/ you get less energy loss between the gears/ more efficient face to face contact. AKA a sun gear used in transmissions. With three low ton high transfers you could turn your system into a 2 to 8 hour clock. think ring gears for the drive.
How about putting the whole thing in the vacuum
I like your idea, just a quick thought instead of using pulleys maybe consider a worm gear, you could use a drivetrain from a electric wheelchair the drive assembly has a disengage so when it reaches the top you would be able to disengage worm gear allow gravity to drive your mechanism. Good Luck !
One of my earlier designs made use of a worm gear. It's in one of the clips in the video. I removed it because I didn't have a disengaging mechanism for it. I'll take a look at those drive trains. Thanks!

there are gravity generators already in use, as energy storage systems. Energy created by solar during the day, is used to 'charge'/lift the weight, then overnight the gravity storage system releases its kinetic energy thru a generator.

use memory metals that will pull weights up when wire is hot....then lower the weights down and gravity generate when wire is cold.....just gotta heat the wires up and they can pull about 1.4 tons per square inch of metal used in the wire when brought up to the temp for memorized phase to activate (which can be as low as warm/hot water)
wire would be in a chamber filled with gas which can be chilled or heated up quickly and efficiently to switch between the wires memorized and regular states (wire or any type of spring made from the shape-memory alloy)
spring gets hot - lifts up heavy stuff.
wire gets cold, loses "coiled" memorized state becomes flexible...lowers weight
spring is in flexible vaccuum chamber filled with chilled or heated refrigerants
Gravity storage system is very good idea, but the design of gravity generator is just key point for success. You should use the regenerating braking system instead of mechanical gear control.

Look at Big Ben's mechanism. And as far as gears go. With proper lubrication they will run fine for years if not decades. There is a dozen other things that tend to break before gears wear out. Factory Maintenance is my profession.

I thought about this while contemplating the design that used 2 barrels connected to each other by a pulley system, where one would decend as it became heavier than the other, which would subsequently be rising, due to a seep valve under each barrel, that would release small mounts of water as it contacts the ground. This causes an up and down motion which could be utilized to spin a generator.. and of course the problem would be, how would the barrels get refilled once their levels became too low to perform the function of perpetuating the up and down motion. I wondered if, in addition to the generation of power produced by the motion, couldn't an other smaller generator be utilized to charge a battery bank who's sole purpose is to run a pump for short periods of time to keep the barrels full of water? We could use simple motor controls for this like level controls and pump contractors. The pump would come on as needed, and the charge would be restored during it's dormant periods. What do you think?
Unfortunately I dropped physics class after 1 year, although I was always doing physics at home with bicycle bulbs magnets batteries and copper wire, So I never learned about the advantage of a pulley. Around 2007 I rediscovered my love for experimenting with these componenents and I had to make up 25 years of lost time. I just finished my steam punk brushless motor using a figdit spinner . Im using a electronic cigarette lion battery you can find in the streets, Runs just fine still wthout having to charge it with that little module.

Set up your motor and gears on the ground. Obviously you want one rotation on the input to equal very high rotations at the output (the motor). Problem with that is it gets very difficult to turn because of decreased leverage and also the friction. The weight will obviously be the thing that attempts to turn it but there are some extra things you can do to make it way better.
Use a large lever set at 45 degrees from the floor (gears) and set the weight on that. Huge increased leverage and therefore torque. Less weight will be needed or just keep it the same but get way more power. If course this will take up more room.
Use a flywheel on the fastest spinning gear (the last). It will add extra load at first but once it gets going it will help counteract the friction. Once you've readied everything you could manually give it a good few shoves to get everything up to speed.
Rather than use many pulleys to hoist the weight up over a longer period of time, perhaps climbing up a ladder and stepping onto a rope with a foot loop and using your entire bodyweight to glide the weight up might be quicker. Not sure about this one though. The hope would be to get the weight up in a matter of seconds, hopefully about 3 repeats, so a 3 to 1 pulley would be needed. Of course everyones bodyweight is different so someone lighter wouldn't be able to do it. Not sure how fast you can go with high pulley setup. Might be able to just charge through it quite quickly. Give yourself a killer tricep workout 🤣.
I've actually designed the rotor to work as a flywheel.
And believe it or not, have been using a similar way to explain to people how easy it would be to reset the pulleys by simply putting your foot in a loop and letting your weight do the work.

What a great beginning? On the generator side, Robert Murray Smith has been toying with serpentine coil generators. Take a look. He's saying we can pack more punch into a smaller space.
I've done mental exercises with gravity generators but always come up against it with the escape mechanism. My favourite is the old school flat blade air governor seen mostly in the hour strike mechanism of pendulum clocks.
My first real world prototype was a 10 foot tall piece of 2 inch square tube with a bicycle sprocket at the top and a old fashioned bench type hand wound grinder body at the bottom with bike chain connecting. I kind of figured inherent friction may be a suitable governor but never found out as life got in the way. I was planning using a garage door counter weight.
In my head I envisage a big set up using perma pine poles and a IBC tank which filled with water will weigh 1,000 kilos, 1 tonne and use a simple chain block to raise it. Again how to unhook the chain block and transfer the weight to the machine is a sticking point but nothing that can't be overcome with hooks and ratchets maybe?

160 kg (rating of the cable) at 3m height is about 4600 joules of potential energy.... Or about 1.2 watt hours. Quick look over the pulley block I'll go with 10 loops so can do 1600 kg. Pure paper napkin math this is about the same storage as an 18650.

Might I suggest looking into using a braided Kevlar cord over the mea metal wire. It's lighter, way stronger both in tensile strength and longevity. At any rate I really enjoyed your video.

Robert Murray-Smith of the Thinking n Tinkering channel recently made a cycloidal magnetic gear set that has a 12:1 ratio. It can handle a lot more torque than a regular one. I wonder how one or more of those would perform in your setup.
I wanted to build one of these but people would be what reset the weight. Imagine going upstairs in your house and when you want to go downstairs use an elevator like device that slowly lowered you down and reset the weight. I thought using the gears from a bike pedals would allow it to be reset at any time or repeatedly.
just a random ideea,what if you used a spring that goes down with the load and pushes the load back up up once it's down,if you could introduce an automatic way of removing the weight for the spring to do it's job to spin the gears in the opposite directions,I never studied mechanics but I suppose to bring the spring all the way down you would need more weight once it reaches a certain point? And to bring it back up the force applied need to be more etc? Anyway this seems like a good ideea in my imagination I don't know if it would work in real world,something like an automatic hooking thing that captures the weight at the top and releases it at the bottom,but for that to work you will need a different weight everytime to do it unless there's some work around which I can't think of right now,if you can generate power while the gears spins in the opposite direction and use that power to operate a motor which uses pulleys to remove the load off the gears and put it back down using a timer wouldn't the energy produced be more than what you use..sorry if its a childish ideea but ij my mind it works somehow haha
At the end of the day, the cost in electricity to reset the weight will be more than any maximum power generated by the weight. You should focus on "power input", using dual weights that toggle and some form of direct diversion of "reset power", so it goes directly to power generation. Giving the weights a rest, when possible.
Such as capturing wind, door opening and closing, placed heavy objects, footsteps, solar evaporation in a closed system, etc... all small physical actions that suck as individual power generation sources, but collectively, harvested in a system, they are all gains.
Use the system as a basic buffer, which it is best suited for, by design. Simple one-way ratchet drives with a counter-clockwise pair, can turn any oscillating action into a singular linear output. Such as a door opening and closing. A platform that lowers and raises after weight is added and then removed. (Walking on a step or platform, to wait or pass. A table you set groceries, tools, clothes onto. A weight on a spring that bounces as your car rides over bumps or a speed-bump that collects power.)
Harvest as much as you can, free-ish.
A solar boiler that steams water up to a radiator collection bucket that auto-tips to dump when full. All in a closed loop setup so you never run out of water.
Obviously, any exercise machines, converting excess resistance into capturing here. (Combined with a bike-fan setup, to aid steam reduction in the prior setup.)
Remember two things....
"Keep it stupid-simple", and "Do you even lift bro?"
Jumping jacks, hop scotch, stepper machines and shake weights will never be the same!
Feed pets on a platform... How much does a dog weigh? How far will it climb to eat? How long does it take them to finish eating, before slowly falling to the ground? PETA may actually approve!

Yeah that "mechanical advantage" the pulley inventors figured out is whole smoking gun. With right storage only need those gears so burdened. If ultra capacitors get small enough, they should bounce charge back and forth while battery trickle skims power itself.

I have an idea ! Can It be possible to use Gravity mechanism on Water Cans. Use 3 of such Water Can weights side by side on as many heights as possible say 2nd/3rd Storey of a Building, (Calculation needed here). Install Two (2) Big Water Tanks of shape Rectangular that cover the entire side by side line mechanism of all 3 Water bottles widths, One on Top of where driving gears for these Water bottles mechanism held and Second on bottom beneath these water bottles. Use Gears as you use and link them as if 1st Bottle reach bottom, the 2nd Bottle will reach Mid and when 2nd Bottle reach bottom, the 3rd Bottle reach Mid and all these Water Tanks are linked with Gears mechanism so there is no Timing issue, this setup will always same when run. Water Cans will move from Water Tank to Water Tank as by using a water filling and emptying mechanism, i.e if One bottle hits ground in the bottom Water tank it will empty there and then pull upward for again filling water from the Upper Water Tank installed and for all Water Cans the procedure will repeat. We can use a small motor to fill the Upper and Lower Tank as necessary. NOW THE QUESTION IS IF ALL DONE CORRECTLY, CAN IT BE A PERPETUAL MOTION BY APPLYING A SMALL INPUT AND MAKING A BIG OUTPUT FROM THAT ??? PS: Water Filling and Water Emptying can be obtained through Air Stoppers and Mechanical Stoppers combined.
I don't know if it could run continuously, but that sounds like it would take a lot of work to find out.

your motor in order to work should be able to lift those weights that will swing between them and after that the motor can carry on its ability to deliver current to the rest of the utilities in the house or whatever you put in it So if the motor does not carry the task of lifting the weights then they will swing between themselves to produce current, i.e. to carry current to the motor through falling movement, then you have not solved anything
