      +Volvalgia I hate it when Christians do that. I'm a Christian, and can't stand the idiots that bully people because they claim to belong to a loving belief system. I also can't stand it when Christians say retarded stuff like "Oh yeah? Well... how do you explain rainbows? Huh?" Like... I probably cringe every five minutes.

    • @Nimiety327
      @Nimiety327 8 років тому +18

      I think James Powers might be trolling. He says "How something get X without X to give it to it" .. Well, Then how did God get "intelligence, morality and value"? By your logic, God couldn't have it unless something else gave it to him.
      All he's doing is kicking the problem further down the road. It doesn't answer the question at all.
      Edit - Also, Morality is subjective.. And that subjectivity comes from our point of view and understanding.

    Dude, thank you. I'm overjoyed with your calm, respectful answers. It's honestly sad to see atheists who don't respond peacefully, and instantly resort to anger. I'm a Christian, but I totally respect varying beliefs, especially when conveyed kindly. I'd love if you believe what I do, of course, as you'd love for me to believe as you do. In the end, I hope we all find truth. Good luck on your search for knowledge, bro.

      And I would like to thank you for your respectful comment, friend. It's great to see a Christian that isn't immediately repelled or repulsed by the very idea of atheists, so I sincerely thank you. Also, I love the end of your comment about finding truth since nobody really knows the truth of anything as well as we think we do, and it's really left up to the individual what ideas to accept and which ones not to. Have a great day!

      Sorry, but you sound like a respectable person.i've just saw that video. I'm french and from accross the sea, i don't undertsand this fight between theists ans atheists or others, i fouthgt this was a debate, but it is actually a dick contest, with a big lack of respect from both sides.
      I am ignostic (before answer the question "do you believe in god?", i ask "what is your definition of god?) and some of my best friends are musmilms, and when we talk about religions or morals, sometimes we disagree, but we never fight, because we respect eachothers and our ideas evolves with thises discussions,
      So why in USA for exemple there is such tension between those beliefs? another exemple is Richard Dawkins, i cannot like this guy, because he dont make people grow, he make them cry, he tottaly drink the tears of his odience, why such hate? can't poeple just respect eachother and trying to have a happy life by not hurrting or constrain others :/

    The problem with many theists is they think that atheism is some sort of belief system or worldview. A question such as "how sure are you that atheism is correct" is nonsensical when atheism is the lack of belief in a god or gods because of insufficient evidence. Another nonsensical question is "how sure are you that atheism represents reality", which presumes again that atheism is a belief system.
    My favorite question is #30: "If you affirm evolution and that the universe will continue to expand forever, then do you think it is probable that given enough time, brains would evolve to the point of exceeding mere physical limitations and become free of the physical and temporal, and thereby become "deity" and not be restricted by space and time? If not, why not?"
    No one can currently answer this question, since we cannot establish whether this is even possible, let alone probable. He nevertheless asks this question because he's trying to bait non-believers with his follow-up question #31: "If you answered the previous question in the affirmative, then aren't you saying that it is probable that some sort of God exists?"
    Even if a clueless person answered #30 in the affirmative, what Slick is asking in #31 certainly doesn't follow.

    • @garethb1961

      +Joe Price The questions betray the theists mindset and misunderstandings. They were all so loaded! They can't be that stupid, so it has to be wilful.
      Still, I replied to the git, on the one in a million chance that he gets a clue.

    • @delphi-moochymaker62
      @delphi-moochymaker62 8 років тому +1

      +Joe Price Worse than that. Christians like to say Atheism is a religion. In doing so they can claim martyr status as in "Your religion of Atheism is attacking Christianity" They try to turn a lack of belief into a belief, which they then try to invalidate. Unfortunately for them you cannot invalidate a lack of belief. You can only have a belief where others do not. This places the onus of proof on Christianity. Nothing makes then squirm more than that because they then need to provide a better answer than "because I believe it to be so" which of course doesn't exist.

    • @fastenedcarrot9570
      @fastenedcarrot9570 8 років тому +3

      +Joe Price #30 also conflates evolution and the origins of the universe, which is common with theists. Which perhaps is because of the ideological mindset they have, i.e. they believe that if one 'believes' one scientific theory they must therefore believe them all, because this is how religion and ideologies work.

    • @honestatheist2328
      @honestatheist2328 8 років тому +1

      I think most of them know it's not a belief system but they still argue that it is to bolster their argument that atheists have no reason to be moral. They have zero evidence for their beliefs so they want to put a burden of proof on atheists to justify 2 equal and opposite positions when they are not equal at all. The more they can make atheism into a religion the more they can pick it apart as irrational and faith based. Funny how they argue faith for an atheist is bad but it's good for them.

    • @joeprice2813
      @joeprice2813 8 років тому +1

      ***** Sorry, but no. Atheism is the lack of a belief in a god, and thus doesn't reflect what the atheist actually believes.
      Gnosticism/agnosticism pertains to knowledge. Agnosticism and atheism are thus not mutually exclusive.
      That aside, we can state with a high degree of certainty that the gods of the various faiths do not in fact exist, and are products of the imagination of ignorant men who desired answers to unanswerable questions or self-professed prophets and charlatans who sought power or fame. There is pretty overwhelming evidence that every religion is BS. This is why many atheists actually hold the belief that there are no gods, and they are fully justified in holding such a view.

      +AL Why is it that people have such difficulty in accepting that we don't have free will? Or that we will all die at some point? I came to these conclusions, realised that it didn't make any difference to the way I live my life, and moved on. I am genuinely searching for an answer here, because it really does confuse me. Like, my grandad is a Jehovah's witness (as are my mom and nan) and I know that he believes that he will live forever. And I asked him once why he wants to, wouldn't he get tired of living, of doing the same things over and over again. And he replied that the older he got, the more time he wanted. But I still don't understand.

    • @magnumopus5406
      @magnumopus5406 7 років тому +2

      Well Satanism has more extreme aspects than many other religions, which isn't exactly liked by the public that much. Even compared to what many people believe (and in some cases, what it actually is) Islam is like, Satanism is viewed as much more "extreme". Not to mention Satanism is nowhere near is frequent and common as Christianity, with about 25% of the entire world believing in Christianity.

    Question 30 (I think?): do you think that brains will evolve to the point where they become a deity?
    Probably not human brains. Our most intense period of evolution since we split from the common ancestor we shared with chimpanzees was during the Pleistocene. A half dozen other bipedal hominid species went extinct during that era because the selection pressures were so intense, and it's entirely likely that it was a fluke of our social organization that allowed us to survive the ice, the scarcity, and the crisis of obstetrics we went through when we transitioned to bipedalism.
    Socially and sexually, we did, and have done, things differently than any other species of mammal (let alone primate) on the planet.
    Because of all of that combination of culture and environment, intelligence was not only heavily selected for, it wasn't able to be out-competed by other traits that could have facilitated our survival (such as a return to quadrupedalism).
    We got smart because of the extreme conditions of our environment and the selection pressures it applied.
    And the moment we got smart enough, what did we do? We removed those selection pressures. We arranged our societies and our physical environment to prioritize the survival of all, not just the smartest and fittest. And now, we've designed machines to do our thinking for us, meaning our grandchildren will be able to unlock more of the secrets of the universe without ever having to get one IQ point smarter than we are. We've also subsidized the reproductive success of the least intelligent and self-sufficient among us to the point where, often, poor and uneducated people out-reproduce the highest achievers. Nikola Tesla self-selected himself out of the gene pool, after all. Meanwhile, Honey Boo-boo.
    None of the above is me making a value judgment on our choices. What it is, essentially, is a list of reasons why, barring some catastrophe that drastically changes our lives, we will almost certainly not be any smarter 40 generations in the future than we are now, and will, in all likelihood, be less smart on average than now.
    There may well be a reverse tipping point for human intelligence, where the sum of our artificial intelligence, our modification of our environment, our medical advancement and our social safety net combine to drive IQs down over generations.

      +karen straughan "become a deity" is a snare question. It reveals either his incapability or malevolence, in that it does not discriminate brain (physical, material world) from non-physical, immaterial world which a deity is.
      The answer is: "Human brains (material) create thoughts (immaterial). A deity is just a thought, and as such it was created in abundance during the history of mankind. Such a deity exists in the same way as it does a number, an aequation, a Legal-Law or a Physical Law. Kindest regards from GERMANY.

      I believe this to be a apparent with all forms of believe, but the media only focuses on the bad. For example, in Christianity the fundamentalists (extreme conservatives) are the homophobic lot. However, the mainstream position simply do not care. For example, the Methodists have allowed homosexual priest (and so) for ages, the Roman Catholic have as well but for less time. However, the media does not say this, and for some the lack of information leads them to the conclusion that Christianity is homophobic, however, this conclusion is only based on 5% of Christianity.

      I'm an atheist with plenty of catholic/orthodox friends. Religion hardly if ever comes up in daily conversation. Unfortunately, it seems true for every demographic in the world, the vocal minority is always the loudest. I know exactly what you mean by a circle argument. They don't debate, they make statements and when you disagree they start making personal attacks. It gives me more faith in humanity when I see religious folk who are reasonable. Not constantly trying to ram their views down everyone's throats. It's the same in atheism too, the majority of us couldn't give any less of a shit what you believe in, if you're a decent human being, you will be respected. The vocal minority that belittle and call down people who believe in this that or the other are as much of a hindrance as the circle argument catholics.

As long as either side keeps continuously attacking the other people will constantly be quarreling over stupid minuscule issues instead of working for the betterment of humanity as a whole. The violent episodes we see in history in the name of religion or not because of religion itself but because of a corrupt group of elites Who use religion for their own personal advancement at the expense of others. Going after ideologies is hardly productive, what makes the difference is educating the public about science and expanding their knowledge. One thing that I've learned from the great philosophy of Taoism is that whenever you try to directly achieve a goal it never works, you have to be in direct and fluid about it.

    Being a Christian, I totally respect your beliefs, and still love your videos. One thing I want to mention though, is that you mentioned that you stopped believing in God for the same reason you stopped believing in Santa Claus. However, we have proof AGAINST Santa being real. Although we have no proof God exists, we have no indisputable proof that God does not exist.
    Now, i am not one of those super catholic bible-toting people, i see the bible as more of a metaphor. Honestly, I see God as not directly controlling things, like making thunderstorms and all that, but I see God more as a being who guides the events of life to reach a certain outcome.
    Glad to see although you have differing viewpoints from non-athiests, you still respect our beliefs and our rights to believe them. Kudos to you!

      Dude the logic of "there is a claim for the existence of something, and although there is no evidence towards its existence, there isn't any evidence towards it not existing either" is just so unhealthy. You can't just claim anything and tell people that its real because there is no counter evidence for its existence. That's like a get out of jail free card for every religious person I've met. We aren't the ones making the extraordinary claim of a magical entity influencing the flow and origin of life, you guys are. So the burden of proof falls on you, not on us to disprove you.

    • @cubemaster6707
      @cubemaster6707 7 років тому

      Mister Titus Just like in our justice system, where it is not our burden to prove ourselves innocent, it is not our burden to prove that god exists. It is your job to prove that god is fake, just as in the criminal justice system.
      I am not forcing you to believe what I do, it is enough to many theists that there is no proof against a God.
      If I were pressing my beliefs on you, I would be the prosecutor. You would not be forced to prove that god does not exist, you think that the lack of evidence is enough, and that is entirely your right to believe.

    • @Patanegn
      @Patanegn 7 років тому +6

      Cubemaster how can you even associate the criminal justice system into this? and by what right do you put yourself in the seat of the innocent lol. religious people made the initial claim of god's existance, not us. hence it is your burden to prove it. if you can't, your case is false and god doesn't exist. very simple logic I don't understand whats so complicated about it.

    I abandoned Christianity for two main reasons:
    1) I couldn't reconcile being taught to be tolerant of other people by my parents and the bible saying "X group of people are *always* awful, sinful monsters and you shouldn't tolerate them."
    2) Once I finally came to understand Hell, I couldn't understand how an all-loving, all-forgiving god could sentence people to infinite torment for crimes as petty as unbelief or not being attracted to men/women.

    • @doktorwollknaul443
      @doktorwollknaul443 5 років тому

      well then, maybe you should try christianity again, cus you missinterpreted smth. The bible is not god's word, so pls stop treating it like this. if you read shit about hell and other stuff it is not meant to be taking litteraly. God's Word became Flesh (Jesus). This is a big difference since there are no legitimate records of Jesus telling you, sinners will die in hell. I don't wanna be disrespectful but if those two were your reasons to abondon Christianity then you didn't dive all that deep into the subject. But your reasons are yours reasons so it's fine anyway

    "What constitutes sufficient evidence of the excistence of god ?"
    Good question I dont think I can answer it. Here is why:
    Because my world-view is based on the fact that my senses and my mind can create a projection of reality that is at least somewhat close to the actualy thing. If for example god appeared in front of me, I would either believe that this being is an imposter with powers so far beyond my own, that I can not distinguish him form an all-powerful god (similar to how cavemen might view us), or that I am going insane, at which point I can not trust my mind or my senses. Another explanation of such an irrational being is that the whole concept and basic rules of logic are broken (which seems rather unlikely, as logic describes reality pretty well).

    Many of these questions could be turned on a theist and we'd probably get answers that made less sense. Theists believe because they have faith. Faith is basically believing in something despite having zero proof of it's existence.

    • @eragon78
      @eragon78 8 років тому +1

      +John Jackson, that's now what faith basically is, its what it literally is. Faith is literally believing in something that has no evidence to support it but still believing in that thing anyways. Faith is an assertion without evidence and sometimes even contrary to evidence which is why a lot of times religious people can be so hard to reason with since they have an unfailiable belief.

    This was a very fitting video. After all, atheism is just a response to a claim.I do notice a bit of muddying of the language in those questions. Particularly with the word 'god'. the word or concept of God is very ill-defined in those questions, and even if we assume a Christian-like god, that god is itself very ill-defined between the different denominations. This is why I cringed at the question of the possibility of a god-like being.

      @Syn Cloud Syn Cloud Verbal assault? Christian have done significantly worse. They commit crimes then claim they are protected by their God. Christian are also very judgemental towards others who are not "good" in God's eyes. By your logic, Greek mythology is correct. Why do we take religion seriously, but not Greek mythology. "No moral obligation to be fair." Christians will deny others right to a basic item because who they are. Example: gay couple denied cake. "They are only filled of hatred." Yeah, and Christian are these perfect people. The same thing could be applied to Christian people. Clearly you must be religious to have a set of moral. Judgement day doesn't exist. "Why do you think us christians are the ones mostly get bashed on?" Saying Christians get bashed on the most is a overstatement. It's only when your religion is shoved down other's throats. I can't confirm what happen on your FB page. Even so, religion should be personal, within the group. That's why it's not taught in school. If you don't wanna be bashed, don't exploit your religion. It's like a Satanist being able to post all wants, and I bet a Christian would reply quickly to the Satanist and bashing. You also act if athiest are these one- dimensional, anger obsessed people. I have sets of morals, just doesn't contain your religion. And you reply "Ha" like that is a great way to start a rebuttal. You also say good luck in Judgement Day as if I should be threatened.

    The belief in God is necessary because human beings have an innate need to believe that the universe, and our lives, have an order and a purpose. The concept of god, a supreme being that controls everything, provides a degree of comfort that we crave because the alternative view is too scary for us to accept. The idea that the universe and everything in it is merely a random collection of matter and energy with no divine reason behind anything undermines the value that we have imposed on our existence. If there is no god and no afterlife than the concepts of good and evil, truth, and free will become irrelevant. We don't like the idea that we aren't really in control of our destiny. The belief in a god absolves us of this fear, especially in times of crisis. When bad things happen that are beyond our control we tell ourselves that this is "God's will" and that god is in control and everything will be alright. This brings order to chaos and convinces us that terrible events are not random but simply a necessary part of a grand and divine plan that we mere mortals are incapable of comprehending. The ultimate fear of every human being is that no one is in control and this is why we created the concept of God.
