Nice idea .. another quick little less secure way is just a hose clamp.
$80k truck and ford makes you buy a.99 cent hose clamp to protect your tailgate. Don’t get me wrong other makes have the same problem but when you pay that much for a truck it shouldn’t be that easy to steal anything on it.
Dude, it normally will be on the right tailgate hinge. The other side is a complete circle around the hinge point. This Mcgard will fit most pickups this is why it is a universal locking system.
Now what we need are new and improved tail gate stops. So tired of picking those up off the ground.

Lol guess people don't know how to break or pick locks huh? The more detterants you have the more likely thieves will move on to an easier target.
I have a 2011 Chevy Silverado 1500. No power locks. So my vehicle doesn't have a key lock on the handle either. So to answer your question, NOPE.

This is cool, but I'm gonna use a hose clamp that's too thick for the average jacker's knife or pry bar to cut through easily
You can put a $1 hose clamp around the hinge angling the bolt towards the bed so you can’t access the bolt with a screw driver and it will require a ratchet and socket or a combo wrench. Sure if they’re dedicated than can still steal it but time is the enemy of a thief and most likely they’ll just move on
There is a video showing that very solution. I am not too worried about mine getting stolen, but if I drive with the tailgate open to haul something longer than my 5'7" bed (like a sofa or lumber), even with a load on the tailgate, it FALLS OFF!!!! And the damned thing must weight 200+ pounds and my senior citizen ass is NOT strong enough to put it back on alone. The hose clamp should solve my problem.
A hoseclamp works also. At least until tailgate thieves start carrying a 5/16" nut driver...
Or flathead screwdrivers. 😅

If you have a locking tailgate, what's the point ?
The panel inside of the tailgate can be taken off in a minute and once inside the thief can pull the lever from within to unlock.
There were two instances of this last week in downtown Dallas in the middle of the day! Apparently these tailgates and lights fetch a pretty penny.
Especially if you also add a locking tonneau cover to boot... If they want it that bad, they're gonna take it regardless!
My truck came with one from the factory.
back in the day you could swap the cups that the tail gate pivots on. took a little time but no one could take off the tailgate without unbolting one side. can this still be done?

I’m still surprised Ford hasn’t changed that yet. My 2019 Silverado tailgate automatically locks with the doors.
The Ford does too, this is just added protection.

Wait so is this supposed to prevent people from opening the tail gate?
This is supposed to prevent people from stealing your tailgate. If a tailgate is unlocked it takes 3 seconds to steal it since there isn’t anything to hold it in safely but this lock does just that.
Did you notice in the video how I was able to lift it out of its slot with one hand? It’s that easy to steal a tailgate and then that gives thieves access to taillights as well.
It prevents people from pulling the tailgate OFF the truck and running away with it easily

What sucks is that u pay $80k for a truck n ford don't even have the decency to make them harder on thieves, my 2013 f250 platinum was stolen in 14 minutes. $20k loss in tools and truck upgrade.

All you need is a 1.25 radiator hose clamp, being doing this for over 35 years nothing new
I am not sure I understand the need for this, since the tailgate locks when you lock the truck.

Bob, tell that to all the dudes missing Tailgates in the DFW area. There's been a run on them as of late.
Bob even with the tailgate locked all they need to do is unscrew the access panel on the back of the tailgate then break the lock or he’ll just bend the locking rods and it’s off and then they take your taillights too
Just had my tailgate taken it was locked useless , I just bought one of these so hopefully it won’t get taken again

Doesn't the tailgate lock with the doors ? Thief won't be able to open it..
They take the panel off from inside the bed and pop the lock open. Takes them less than a minute and the tailgate is gone. There was a video floating around of guys doing a while ago.

Yeah my buddy's platnium tailgate got stolen "like he said in 3 seconds it's out sucks he paid 2000 for used one
3 newer tailgates have been stolen in our area within 5 miles of us in a 2 year period.

This product is garbage! Don’t rely on this to protect your tailgate! I got my platinum tailgate stolen in minutes caught on camera as if it had nothing. Best thing is to have a shop weld it.
