Dr. Jane! I must say that your SOP is the best mind blowing one I have ever listened to. Other SOPs that I have read and listened to are written generically. My reason for concluding that yours is the best is that fact that you have convincing quantitative and qualitative results with positive attitude to make change through dedicated positive mindset. In fact, you specifically pinpointed all your achievements that had prepared you for the graduate school. Welldone, Dr. Jane! You deserve the award. I am submitting applications this year Dr. So, I want clarity on the following questions ma. My Questions 1. Where there are 3 to 4 professors in a department whose research areas align perfectly with mine, is it advisable to cold mail just one professor in that department or email all? If no, what is the maximum number of professors you advise a potential student should reach out to in the same department, same university? 2. In your SOP, when you got to where you mentioned whom to work with as primary advisor, you mentioned two professors. As well as alternative professor. Now, my question is, were both of them aware that you reached out to them before the application? I am asking because if 2 of them like the candidate and admission is given maybe it can cause issues between. Also, I am only reaching out to one that is why I am asking. Thank you so much for taking time to record this video Dr. Looking forward to hearing from you. Nation.
Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts! I am glad to see that you got the messages from the video! Thank you. For your questions, 1. People usually say to not message many professors at the same time because it might make you appear unsure of your research area. But in your case since they align ( I am guessing they are in the same research area), you can message one or two. After you hear from them, depending on their response, you can message the others. 2. I did not reach out to them. I only reached out to one and he never responded to me. So in short, I did not get any response from any professor during my entire application, yet I got the admission. So while it is important and can be helpful to contact them, still apply regardless. All the best with your application!
Waooo!!!. Thank you so much Dr. Your kind response and direct answers to my questions really mean a lot to me. Thank you Dr. Jane One more question Dr. I am considering applying to PhD direct because of my extensive research experience and skills. However, many universities want the ideal candidate to have M.Ed/M.Sc as a major criterium. So, Dr. Jane, pls see my details below and advise if I should still try my luck to apply as a B.Ed holder to PhD direct without minding the M.Ed. 1. I am a B.Ed holder with a First-Class Honours in Education 2. I have over 10 academic publications in learned journals with evidence in my Google Scholar page. 3. I have worked as a Research Assistant with a professor during my undergraduate in University of Lagos, where I had an opportunity to lead webinars and organise training for postgraduate students. 4. I have facilitated 5 research training sessions with academics. 5. I am currently working as a Research Analyst with an EdTech firm. Thank you so much ma. I look forward to your view. Nation
Dr . Jane , I am So thrilled having watched the video and how you articulated your points . My question is if someone had gotten internship in ones field does it affect how you tell the story to fit into what you seeking? For instance, in my case , I had only volunteered in cancer Foundation and community development for health care sensitization. Can this be descriptive to tell a convincing story? I am actually looking at Graduate studies in Medicine or Medical Physics . These Professors you mentioned, did you actually sent them a cold mails-if yes, is it right to mention their names when they didn’t replied your mails?
This is a complete package. Though i am in accounting and finance field but i wrote everything as she reads. Hoping to use it as a sample. More wins Doc.
This has to be the best SOP I've read so far that tells your passion with only your undergraduate research and internship experience and I'm so wowed at how you perfectly describe it to meet your needs. Thank you!
Dear Dr. N.A. Jane, @Jane CE I just finished watching your Statement of Purpose (SOP) video for your PhD program at Rochester University, and I'm blown away! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 Your journey from IT to PhD is truly inspiring, and the way you tailored your research is perfect. Your video has opened my eyes to the loopholes in my current SOP, and I realize now that it lacks focus. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience with us. Your guidance will definitely help me upgrade my SOP and confidently guide others, especially the younger ones. Kudos to the team that helped you write such a brilliant SOP! You've done an outstanding job, and I'm grateful for your willingness to share your expertise. Keep inspiring! 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽 I encourage everyone here to watch the video and also subscribe to her UA-cam channel. You can also share the videos with friends and younger ones. Wish you all the best Unik Jane
I'll start by saying thank you. I almost back off from listening to this, but I'm a subscriber now. You have done exceptionally well. Your SOP is captivative and personally as supposed.🎉❤
@UnikJane I thought that it didn't make sense to read one SOP and instead give advice and a guide on how to write one. The reason for thinking like that was that I know a lot of people would plagiarise it.
This was the only essay I wrote for my application. I didn’t write personal and diversity statements. I am sure you can find some samples out there. All the best!
Thank you so much Dr Jane, this is one of the best SOPs I’ve heard. Question: what if your final year project doesn’t align with the program you’re applying for? And do you have to send cold emails to professors you had interest in their research? Like is it a must?
Thank you. Its okay if they don’t allign. Just make sure to specifically write about why you are interested in the new program. It is good to write cold emails but it is not a must.
Hello Dr Jane, I really appreciate your insight on writing an SOP it has really helped. I would like to ask, do you have an advise on how to go about it if my research experience and interest do not align?
Congratulations, Dr!🎉 A mind blowing and compelling essay. But ma, what advice would you give out to prospective PhD applicants in terms of funding and settlement in Rochester and most of other graduates school in the US? Aside from the tuition coverage by the institution, can students work during their PhD program so as to augment their stipends for accomodation and other future expenditure? How did you overcome? Please share with us!🙏
Thank you. Good question. I have lots of videos for prospective applicants on my UA-cam channel. Just check them out. Stipends are enough to fund your daily living such as accommodation and everything. You are not allowed to work unless it is an internship that is approved by your school or it is an on campus job.
I got into PhD with just an undergraduate degree. But along the line, I got my masters. Some schools allow you to get your masters after 2 years of your PhD while some don’t. In the US, you don’t need a masters degree to do a PhD
Hi Dr Jane, In filling out the other institutions we are applying to on an application portal, is there a tact required or we should just fill it freely?
Good evening Dr. Jane from Nigeria Please my question is this: Did you write any english test or gre when you were applying and what other criteria was used in selecting you for full funding
Yes, I wrote GRE and TOEFL. But now most schools waive these tests. The criteria depends on the school. So check the schools website for their eligibility criteria.
Hello Dr Jane, Thank you so much for the video. I am also planning on pursuing a Ph.D. in chemical engineering. I wanted to ask if there is a word limit or if it is dependent on schools because i am having an issue navigating between ensuring it is around 1000 and being specific
Hi Jane, you got an amazing sop now I see why you got a phd waiver it was really good. Do you mind me sending you my sop for a school I want to apply for this week ? If it’s convenient for you, I’d appreciate your feedback,

However, i have just watched the first 10 minutes and it's been interesting but it is coming off like a personal statement. Please if i am wrong, kindly correct me. Because some schools require you submit both. Thank you
