How do i define home. Home is where I was born, the place I live, the place I work, the place i raise my family. Home for me will forever be Singapore. I am a patriot and I love my country Singapore. There is no place on Earth like Singapore. I am forever grateful that I was born in Singapore. And I witnessed the rise of Singapore from slum to First World.
Totally agree 1000%. My grandparents and parents and their children (including me) live through the slum times to being a First World country. I know how Singapore was during this transition period. Back then life was simple and people were contented and happy. Singapore is my home forever!
Me too, I witnessed students from Chung Cheng High School running along Tg Katong with the Riots Police chasing after them. Before I was teenager, I also witnessed racial riot at Geylang Serai. I have used a hole in ground to a flushing toilet in a HDB. Now thats was my slum to the First World.
The success and prosperity of Singapore has nothing to do with luck. It’s all the sheer hard work of an effective and capable government that has made Singapore to what it is today. But we’re lucky to have LKY and PAP
😂 remove LKY and the country goes to hell like many neighbouring countries. Yes Singapore is lucky. Don't pretend like your pioneers work harder than people from Bangladesh labouring to build your BTO.
@@bminton3291 OP said sacrifices and hard work of the pioneer generations of sg. that includes LKY and his generation. they did hard labour too to build sg into what we are today. and it is our duty to continue the success of our forefathers in the appropriate manner too. we can still easily run sg to hell like many countries around us if we don’t do things properly. a country can easily go bad in 1 generation. LKY has passed on but sg is still doing fine. so please don’t disregard the efforts of the current govt and ppl as a whole. it takes 2 hands to clap. we are very blessed to have good governance and had a bunch of leaders who saw the need and stepped up and ppl who respect the govt enuf to work tgt harmoniously. i won’t call it lucky. it is not easy too.
I dislike it when other people say Singapore is very lucky. It's not luck. It's strategic planning given what you have. Sure we have a great geographical position in terms of trade and natural disasters, but if you do nothing with this advantage, it is also wasted. In fact, so many other countries have so much more natural resources that those are the ones I will say it's lucky. If you use "luck" to describes Singapore's rise, it really really discounts the hard work and toil that our previous generations went through, and the all the young people who are working hard now to make their lives even better.
I do think that his ill choice of the word “lucky” is down to his lack of the English vocabulary…but it does provide a trigger for feedback from viewers, myself included. 😅
Unsure why every time I listen to these rich foreigners' praises on Singapore make me think they are hypocrites.Their mindset of "so lucky" is ignoring/discounting the hard work and scarifies of previous generations who build Singapore. It is no different from anyone call someone is so lucky for winning a sport competition but they ignore that someone has trained and work hard for it as well.
I agree with you. Hard work, unity and strategic planning took us where we are. Many foreigners only think SG is "lucky" because we are located in a strategic maritime route. And we will be DOOM if the Thais build "Kra land bridge", or "one belt one road" cutting us off. For those who wants to know. Maritime shipping is only contributing 7% to our GDP. Maritime is just passive income for SG. We had long moved up the value chain since the 80's. Another standard comment that i buay tahan is when foreigners commented. SG so small, one bomb all die. Lol. For goodness sake, u think we dont know that you know? For those who needs to know SG have many military bases in other countries. Dont disturb the hornet nest. Dont say no tell. Lol. For fun. Nice weekend everyone! 😅
As a fellow Gen X, I find myself agreeing to Peter's views. Having lived in so many different places, I find him very open, astute and honest. His mindset is very different from that of what I have of a man from China, even if he's highly educated, has a good job, travelled the world and lived in many different countries in different parts of the world. He's so sharp, grounded, realistic and humble 👍 I think his willingness and openness to immerse himself into our society doesn't make him feel being stereotyped. Actually I think he speaks English like a local, just minus the Singlish. I feel that a lot of Chinese from China, when they migrate here, they refuse to learn to speak English, even just simple words. I've neighbours who are like that, even after 10 years. We're a multiracial society so we're also not speaking in perfect English all the time, hence partly why Singlish exists😅 I especially like what he said at the end about the meaning of life - achievement and supporting others and in return, giving and rewarding back to the society, the basic principle of human life.👍 He didn't say Singapore is very lucky. He said others said Singapore is very lucky. Because he knows and appreciates our super efficient government. And I agree with him. Though it's so very hot and humid here, I cannot complain because we are very lucky we don't have natural disasters like earthquakes, hurricanes, tsunamis etc, here. Yes, we're indeed lucky🙏 But the safety, stability, equality, freedom and prosperity that we enjoy is not through luck. Our forefathers, pioneers and our government led especially by our dear Mr Lee Kuan Yew laid the foundation for our country, our government and our people. I'm always very thankful and grateful to our government especially during and after the COVID pandemic. 🙏 As like most Singaporeans, we already know how hard our government works but especially during the pandemic, it really showed how difficult it was, and still is, for us, a small country without any natural resources, to survive and why our government made and will still make, certain, though very painful but absolutely necessary, decisions for our survival. And when our current PM Mr Lawrence Wong, then the Minister for National Development who fronted key announcements as co-chair of the multi-ministry task force during the COVID pandemic, broke down in Parliament while paying tribute to everybody especially the 'unsung heroes' like the invisible ordinary Singaporeans, I cried too because it was really a very difficult time for everybody, what more for a government who had a weight of 5.7 million lives dependent on them. I couldn't and still can't imagine that immense pressure. It made me even more appreciative of our people and our government. And especially after I watched news of how other countries coped with the pandemic. So I'm forever thankful and grateful 🙏 Majulah Singapura!
@fungmeiho2976 I agree with you. I want to be honest here. Though I'm a Singaporean and my grandparents are from China, I have a very bad impression of Chinese. Peter actually changed my views / stereotype of people from China. It was kind of because of my "hate" for them that I decided to watch this video when it appeared on my feed as I was pretty curious how Chinese in Singapore felt about us. When I first heard him speak, I was like ya lar, typical Chinese speaking English and I was quite shocked about the part when he mentioned that he doesn't really feel that we stereotype Chinese Nationals, as I'm obviously guilty of that, but I think you are right, he is really very open and willing to immerse himself into our society, probably that's why he does not feel stereotyped. Honestly, if I know him, I would not mind being friends with him as well, he seemed like a really humble guy. Of course, I'm not saying all Chinese Nationals are bad lah, I have also seen good ones like him. Just that probably they form a minority, that is why I have a bad impression of them. To me, majority of Chinese are like really loud and they are quite full of themselves but Peter feels different. He is humble and down to Earth. I'm not too sure if it was because he lived in many parts of the world before, so he has a more comprehensive view of the world. But honestly, if every Chinese national is like him, I wouldn't mind welcoming them into our society. And I think what he said actually inspired me, I'm kind of lost in life right now. What he said about life got me thinking. And yes, as a Singaporean, I'm very proud of Singapore's government, Always efficient and usually handled things well. It all started with our dear LKY, though he was hated for being cold-hearted in the past, I feel that it was this character of him that we have a corrupt free government although recently got some corruption 😅 But overall, I still think Singapore's government has really done a really great job in shaping into how we are today. Really grateful.
@joannesoh9442 Yes. I also have very bad impressions of the Chinese. I've been rebutting those online who call us '坡县' and why we look like Chinese but we can't speak Chinese and why our MRT stations are in '讨厌的' English. Maybe those residing around me behave in their typical way- loud and very fixed in their ways and thinking. Of course, I've met very different ones too. But just too few of them. As for our government and our dear Mr Lee Kuan Yew, I'm forever thankful and grateful 🙏 Of course, there are always areas where we can do better. I've just watched Max's interview with Dr Brian James Tracey. Very enlightening👍
This is a Chinese national I would warmly welcome in Singapore, his world view is more international, he speaks English, he appreciates Singapore for what it is…. In short, he doesn’t fit the stereotype of a PRC. He seems happy and willing to integrate, rather than harp on China and Singapore being “compatriots”, which frankly puts Singaporeans off. Singaporeans are not racist, but we dislike PRCs who seem to think we are affiliated to them in some way and should show some allegiance. This guy, on the other hand, is not like that. He thinks more like a Singaporean. Good interview choice, Max.
"Singapreans are not racist." If you are an ethnic Chinese Singaporean, how can you be racist to another ethnic Chinese from the mainland China? By the way, have you seen the way the Singaporean CEO of TikTok was treated during the US congressional hearing?
A ‘PRC’ will only be noticed if they meets the stereotype of ‘PRC’. This stereotype exists because it’s not normal but not because most of the PRC act this way. Those people would be ‘outstanding’ even if they were in China. Assuming that 1 of 1000 in China’s 1.4b population has some problems, there would be 1.4m people. I’m a ‘PRC’ but would not stand out from a crowd of Singaporeans because I act like an average person.
I do not think " lucky" is the correct word to use. Singapore as a nation has built a reputation of being fair and safe through our competent government & transparent system. We do not benefit from others' misfortune, but rather the people who chose to come here have made their own calculations and judgments.
Exactly…no way was and is Singapore “lucky”. Singapore - much thanks to the leadership of the late visionary Mr Lee Kuan Yew - went from a fishing village-type island to this bustling thriving economy without any natural resources (except human) to fall back on. This is not luck…it’s hard graft and people the world over can see that. And kudos to the government, there is no resting on their laurels. The financial and social (and more) stability is what draws people to the island state. Over the years, the multi-cultural characteristic of Singaporeans have evolved into this national identifiable trait of warm friendliness (from the taxi driver to the vendor in the wet market to your neighbour) that is hard to beat. Yes, there’s still work to be done…and the government is working on it, from my experience of witnessing the positive changes that continue to be wrought.
When I growing up in Singapore, I experienced using an outhouse, a hole in ground to a truck with 24 doors and finally a throne. Singapore is "Lucky" because of one man.
@@christine8203 Singapore was not a fishing village island when LKY took over. It was a middle-income country (by UN/World Bank definitions) and the world's fifth-biggest port by the mid-fifties....
HK and Singapore are 2 very different cities and you cannot compare them directly. Singapore is just lucky to have PM LKY and his pioneer team. There are problems that Singapore face everyday that HK will never have. HK think about making money everyday. Singapore think about survival everyday. Very nice interview from a very positive gentleman.
SG is “lucky” in a sense that we had an “Asian parent like” leader in LKY. If we had the freedom mindset to everything we would be a typical South East Asian country + crime and drugs. Humans need laws and religions to know their boundaries.
We always welcome guys like him who can evolve in Singapore and find harmony. Be it with Chinese or any other nation, if you share the same with us, this is a place for you.
I think lucky is not the right word. It was intentional strategizing. I remember back in those days where Singapore's economy was fragile. Anw I am happy for this guy here.
I like his honestly n truthful view n comments. This is good citizen/ foreigner. He gets along with locals n not fight with locals as I have had experience with some bad/naughty ones. Singapore welcome u n family!!! Wishing u n family good health n enjoy your stay. 🌹🌹🌹❤️❤️❤️🙏🙏🙏
Very chill and likeable guy. As for the debate in the comments about whether SG is LUCKY or not, well let's see put it this way ... We are indeed LUCKY that fate decreed that Koh Teong Koo save LKY from the Sook Ching Massacre. Otherwise, without the absolute brilliance of LKY, the real Ironman, AND his stalwarts, we would likely have succumbed to the fact that we had NOTHING but the people for resources. In fact to quote LKY's own words from his memoirs, "Well I was lucky. I was lucky. Those who went on that lorry were taken to the beach and shot. Would have been me." LKY felt he was so lucky he said it TWICE. 😂
My late grandfather had the same luck, he was directed to go on the other lorry (by the Japanese officer) while his friend was shoved on the opposite one and later machine gunned down at Changi beach. My mother wouldn't have been born later in 1951, and so I might be living another life now :) I share Peter's sentiment about giving back to society, a theme that was echoed by most of Max's guests, because none of us made it through life without "luck", be it the luck of others' goodwill, kindness, or plain serendipity. Those who think meritocracy truly reflects their success through only personal ability should reexamine their beliefs about themselves.
After reading all the comments, I think a lot of people are misunderstanding the words lucky the guests mean, he didn't say Singapore success was due to lucky, he said Singapore was lucky to nearby places people to be a safe heaven to hide from when they are in trouble such as HK riots Indonesia anti Chinese riots to come to. That's was the "lucky" he really means.
Singapore. I have lived in HK for 3 years, it was a terrible place for health and work culture. I am alot happier back in Singapore, I am a Singaporean anyway.
I think what he means is that Singaporean are lucky as our government did a good job from day one from our pioneer........ These 30 years overall society are stable ..... In that sense, we are lucky 😊 Thank you to our government and community for cointuine to improved and maintain the stability of our society 👏 👍 🙏
points to take away for shorts: 1 Europeans are also very hard working, they put in their time in the right places. 2 Rich Chinese 1% of PRC Chinese is 14 million people. Add in another 2% of comfortable upper middle class, it is 42 million people, more than the 3 very rich Benelux countries Netherlands, Belgium, Luxemburg. 3 Yes, we are lucky and yes, we made our own luck.
Singapore success was achieved by hard work of the people mostly, but there is little luck part which is Lee Kuan Yew as Singapore leader. Without the combination of hard working humble people and leader like LKY, I dont think Singapore would be as great as now. PS: how much I wish my country had leader as wise and brave like LKY, and people like Singapore.
Singapore is successful is bcoz of foresight & a proper planning in all aspects of life. Sheer hardwork is wasteful without great vision & gd foresight.
I'd personally love to learn more about the perspective of people who have moved to HK. So far, the channel has only aired the Singapore =good, Hong Kong = bad perspective. I'm sure people on YT would also be interested to learn about people who have moved to HK and really enjoy it.
Hong Kong has a great countryside with acres of mountains and forests as far as the eye can see. There are secluded beaches as well. Plenty of nice villages.
I guess only people from places like n.korea and communist china moving to live in Hong Kong will find themselves "happier" than living in their original country. Else, it would be suicide for people from other developed countries to migrate to Hong Kong at this present moment.
Got 2 poly friends who shifted to SG as 2nd gen, served their NS and have decent careers in SG. However when 2 honkies meet up each other, the Cantonese vulgarities just come out their mouths like a typical HK taxi driver 😅

He is right to say that foreigners run to Singapore whenever they face problems in their countries. Eg in the initial covid days, there were PRC coming to SG to get top level free medical service (it was foc initially) and yet demand and threaten when they couldn't get their ways (heard from frontline medical staff).

Peter seems like a great person with a positive outlook in life, he is also very international and I would say he is quite different from a typical Chinese person from China. SG is better than HK for (Mainland) Chinese because in SG, the dominant tongue for Singaporean Chinese is Mandarin (outside of English), vs. Cantonese in in HK.
Good listening to the viewpoints of a person who has been living in other countries and compare to Singapore. However, I tend to disagree with his point about losing of personal items in a public space. It is not we S'poreans are being complacent especially when in Europe, but the facts are that Europe streets are relatively full of pickpockets . My relatives and myself are victims of these pickpockets in London, Prague, Paris. Even when in cities which you think safe like Vienna, I've warned to be very careful of my personal items when strolling there. We wore simply and no expensive items , but yet we are victimes.

Singapore can be considered to be "lucky" when it got "decoupled" from Malaysia! The resilient pioneer generations of leaders and citizens of Singapore ( of all races, the stayers, not the quitters) then put in the sacrifices and hard work required to create the prosperous Singapore of today. Many older generation pioneers had sacrificed their best years doing National Service to keep Singapore secure and safe for it's economic development. Singapore's success also attracted many "fair weather foreigners" coming into Singapore now, calling it their "home" though hardly contributing anything to build it or taking roots to becomes citizens. They will likely flutter away as soon as things sours up. They do not have any special skills or knowledge that Singaporeans do not possessed.
The harder you work the luckier you will get. I work for a Singapore company for 28 years, first time back to Si g two weeks ago, and spoke to many of my friends, and the common theme is rich Chinese from CHINA are taking over by buying up real estates which locals cannot compete. Very subjective question if you ask random people. But in terms of future Hong Kong can become great if the HK Govn can crackdown real estate. If you have traveled and lived in China for a while and regularly you will see the insane speed of development. Just look at Shenzhen next door from Hong Kong how impressive China is with development, it's the most smart and high tech metropole in the world right now. From Hong Kong you can now take Bullet Trains to Beijing, Shanghai etc. The greater bay area has become a better connected area for businesses to only benefit from this.
Singapore is not lucky. Singapore is build-ed through the sacrifices and resilience of our pioneer generations of Singaporeans.
hear hear!
*built
😂 remove LKY and the country goes to hell like many neighbouring countries. Yes Singapore is lucky. Don't pretend like your pioneers work harder than people from Bangladesh labouring to build your BTO.
Sorry to break it to you but Singapore is indeed lucky to have LKY, the true leader that BUILD-ed Singapore.

SINGAPORE NOT ONLY LUCKY, SINGAPORE TAKE ACTION PLUS TEAM WORK TOGETHER WITH SOCIETY. 💪💪👊👊👍👍🇸🇬
He's so sharp, grounded, realistic and humble 👍
I think his willingness and openness to immerse himself into our society doesn't make him feel being stereotyped. Actually I think he speaks English like a local, just minus the Singlish. I feel that a lot of Chinese from China, when they migrate here, they refuse to learn to speak English, even just simple words. I've neighbours who are like that, even after 10 years.
We're a multiracial society so we're also not speaking in perfect English all the time, hence partly why Singlish exists😅
I especially like what he said at the end about the meaning of life - achievement and supporting others and in return, giving and rewarding back to the society, the basic principle of human life.👍
He didn't say Singapore is very lucky. He said others said Singapore is very lucky. Because he knows and appreciates our super efficient government. And I agree with him. Though it's so very hot and humid here, I cannot complain because we are very lucky we don't have natural disasters like earthquakes, hurricanes, tsunamis etc, here. Yes, we're indeed lucky🙏
But the safety, stability, equality, freedom and prosperity that we enjoy is not through luck. Our forefathers, pioneers and our government led especially by our dear Mr Lee Kuan Yew laid the foundation for our country, our government and our people. I'm always very thankful and grateful to our government especially during and after the COVID pandemic. 🙏
As like most Singaporeans, we already know how hard our government works but especially during the pandemic, it really showed how difficult it was, and still is, for us, a small country without any natural resources, to survive and why our government made and will still make, certain, though very painful but absolutely necessary, decisions for our survival.
So I'm forever thankful and grateful 🙏
Majulah Singapura!
@02june80 所以您想说什么呢?
As for our government and our dear Mr Lee Kuan Yew, I'm forever thankful and grateful 🙏
Of course, there are always areas where we can do better.
Totally Agreed

Singapore is lucky to have Singapore founding father and his team. They laid a strong foundation for Singapore to strive.
Very cleverlah. Without Malaysian waters Singapore will drink urine every day😊
Exactly…no way was and is Singapore “lucky”.
I fell in love with Singapore long time ago,Singapore is greater country i ever known.❤❤❤

Singapore is not only better than Hong Kong for Chinese, she’s better than whole world for everyone!
Singapore is not just lucky it is a good country and a rare one too .
Thank you :)

In that sense, we are lucky 😊
Thank you to our government and community for cointuine to improved and maintain the stability of our society 👏 👍 🙏
points to take away for shorts: 1 Europeans are also very hard working, they put in their time in the right places.
"Lucky" should not be a word to describe our City. We labour to where we are and do not have to listen to any dogs.

From Hong Kong you can now take Bullet Trains to Beijing, Shanghai etc. The greater bay area has become a better connected area for businesses to only benefit from this. Hong Kong can become a revitalised global financial centre (again) in the space of digitalised asset future to support BRICS, Crypto, Blockchain, Metaverse, Web3, NFTs etc. Hong Kong and the Hong Kong citizens should unbrain-wash themselves and fully embrace China.
U are crazy to be brain washed by communist.
@@amyg1073And you're ignorant for being easily brainwashed by the West
In agreement with you. China’s development, in my opinion, has been truly amazing this last decade or two. They will go from strength to strength…
In 2023, China's population is 1.41b.
He said "Maybe only 1% can afford." That 1% is about 14 million. LOL!

Anglo(红毛.or白鬼) at all which may bother you and your family - worst, your may have to donate money to fight in Ukraine.
It’s more than 100 thousand n still increasing. Never heard of in any city such a great number leaving n yet u said it’s a small number. They are all young n productive. They are the ones making the economy for the country. The ones left behind are the old n unproductive, helpless, so have to stay put in Hk
@@amyg1073 Yawn. Have you seen the statistics? Half of BNOs in the UK are jobless and 25% are in jobs that are below their skills. Most of the ones that moved are low income because the high income people in HK already own properties abroad and can move anytime, no need for BNO. Lastly, those people that left have been replaced by the High Skilled people recruited via the Gov't program. These people need to earn high income and credentials to get into HK. Go look at the numbers, it's pretty big
@@amyg1073 Go look at HK's population. It has actually increased from two years ago. So much for hundreds of thousands of people that left and were never replaced. HK's population was 7.488 million in 2022. Today it's 7.496 million.

100000 out i7 millions, that is peanuts.
There are lots of peaceful people in Hong Kong worship colonisers man made almighty to be subservient to them. Having slave names before their ancestors names. This is dishonouring obstructing their flow of cultural heritage and wisdom. This is a curse for them
