Very rich presentation!!!! Currently, trying to start but busy with work as a consultant surgeon.... Just got approval for registration. I for see a lot of work ahead!!!!.....I must say that your talks are giving me more hopes of my dream!...Thanks so much Amber.
I’m starting a non profit to end homelessness in Salem County NJ and build affordable housing for low to moderate income residents. I’m currently doing my research and I’ve met some great people from other organizations that has similar goals. Im planning to join the PIT count committee which is a group of people planning the most effective way to survey the communities in Salem County to know the number of homeless in Salem. I already have the mission for the Nonprofit but I’m currently struggling to find board members.
I am starting year 2 of my nonprofit- Mission Restoring Hope. We collect peoples second hand goods and disperse them out to persons in need or suffering from a crisis. The collection process is established but the distribution piece needs to be addressed this year. We are set up to be a thrift store, but there is no affordable property available to house it in currently. I am renting a storage unit to store items that would qualify for the thrift store for now. Thanks for the information
Thanks Amber! This is very helpful to me, due to the fact that my action plan for our first year was pretty much vague and not appealing to stakeholders.
It will be very interesting to participate in your Facebook when we are registered)). Next month I am going to Kyiv to talk to other Foundations, visit hospitals, visit destroyed regions and make videos...basically to get information. And in October launch the website)
Hi! Starting a non profit with some crowdfunding. Love your content thank you. Can I put on my website that I am applying for a 501c3 status? If so what would that wording be?
Hello! It's all about transparency. You could say you're in the process of applying for 501c3 status but currently donations are not yet tax deductible. People normally don't mind - if they care about your cause they donate regardless of the status.
Hi, thank you for all your videos!! Do you know if board members can be held liable for a non-profits debt? We have one guy, who wants to go into debt but the rest of the board does not. He says he's still going to try to purchase land to build on in the non-profits name. It's his non-profit, but doesn't he still have to have a majority of board approval?
Hey there! It's complicated, this article may help: www.nolo.com/legal-encyclopedia/nonprofit-directors-personal-liability-32357.html As for having the majority of the board's approval, that depends - what do your Bylaws say? They should dictate how many board votes are needed to pass.
You technically can, but need to be transparent with donors that you aren't fully registered yet and their donations won't be tax deductible; also, if you are not at least incorporated you may face personal liability on taxes if the donations are being submitted through an individual person. I recommend talking to an accountant.
It's tough out there for sure! I would say identify bulk rates / discounts for items you need with local vendors, and start tightening up your storytelling and messaging to inspire some additional donations next year..
Thanks for posting this. Our Canadian nonprofit was founded in 2016, and we gained registered charitable status and launched our first ongoing service in 2019. Almost everyone who helped us start have Mission based experience rather than nonprofit management or business administration experience, so we became excellent at making an impact while struggling to run efficiently or sustainably. Hearing about a ideal first three years helps me see what steps we skipped or did not devote enough time to, and gives me ideas of what to include in our strategic plan to even things out.
Your content is truly amazing and life saving, thanks for continuing to so such amazing work. I am currently in the middle of year 2 🤗 and I look forward to learning more from you!
Love your channel! I want to start a non profit, but plan of traveling a lot in the next few years. Can I be a founder and hire a team to manage it and work remotely? Or is it crucial to be available in person?
I would say that depends entirely on your specific mission. If the mission doesn't require people to interact with others in person on the ground in a community directly (for example, a food shelter or nonprofit clinic) then it's probably up to you!

Sounds like you're off to a solid start! PIT will definitely help you see the needs first hand and meet other groups with similar goals.
Very informative
Glad it was helpful!

Hi Amber, can new nonprofit organizations receive donations and do fundraising without having a charity number?

What do you know about 501d organizations?
Religious associations? I'm less familiar with those but they sound interesting to study!
Recession is coming soon and high inflation we are suffering now how will we survive?(( Thanks Amber.
