Aug. 26, 2019 | Bob Boilen -- "Is it ok if I do a little dance on your desk?" asked 47SOUL singer and percussionist Walaa Sbeit on first seeing the Tiny Desk. I thought a minute, went under the desk, tightened the bolts, stuck some splints of wood under a few of the uneven legs and (feeling reassured) gave him the nod. It would be our first traditional Middle Eastern Dabke dancing atop the Tiny Desk and the first sounds of Shamstep (a kind of electronic dance music) behind it.
Shamstep is the creation of 47SOUL. At its heart is Arab roots music laced with dub, reggae and electronic dance music, including dubstep. It's positive-force music with freedom, celebration and hope for the people of the Sham region (Palestine, Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria).
47SOUL's message of equality, heard here at the Tiny Desk (and on the group's current album, Balfron Promise) is meant for all the world. This is music without borders, mixing old and new, acoustic and electronic from a band formed in Amman Jordan, singing in Arabic and English. It's one big, positive and poignant party.

FREEEEE PALESTINEEEEE ❤️ 🇵🇸
From the river to the sea 🇵🇸❤️
Free Syria revolution until victory
🇵🇸🇵🇸🇵🇸🇵🇸
As a South African, seeing the t-shirt 18s into the video (1994, the year South Africa held it's first democratic elections) really made my day! As Nelson Mandela said, '"We know too well that our freedom is incomplete without the freedom of the Palestinians." 🇿🇦♥️🇵🇸
Free Palestine ❤
Long live South Africa, the world should never forget how you stand with the Palestinians
🖤🇿🇦🖤🇵🇸🖤
Beautiful❤
That desk just received the most smooth Dabke moves it will ever receive and survived it !!
Full.on re-engineering before the performance it seems 😂
🇵🇸 From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free!!!! ✊🏻❤️‼️
FROM THE SEA TO THE RIVER PALESTINE WILL LIVE FOREVER
They look pretty free to me
🔊🔊🔊
Much love and solidarity to Palestine from South Africa. The world is with you. Your 1994 will come.
This was INSANE and I’m so sad at the circumstances that brought me here but regardless wow this was such a delight to watch
The rich culture ( dance, music chants, food, olive trees, traditional clothes as every city has its unique embroiderey) is an ultimate proof of the indigenous people of Palestine. From the river to the sea and it always will be.
you know you're Arab when you jump on desks dancing
Free Palestine from The Balkans to the Sea. 🇲🇰❤🇵🇸
i don't know if i would have been able to handle the last 44 days without their music

I really enjoyed this, the words full of passion and truth. The saddest thing about me finding out about this group is that war brought be here. Sending love and light to all who need it. ❤🕯

Seeing that 1994 South African t shirt on one of the bandmates really warmed my heart, indeed our freedom is not complete without the freedom of the Palestinians. We love you so much, my dear Palestinian brothers and sisters. You struggle is our struggle. Free Palestine 🇵🇸

Discovered 47soul 3 years ago at a midnight set at Glastonbury... one of the most unusual, but incredible performances I've ever experienced & loved them ever since! So glad Tiny Desk is finally giving 47soul the recognition they deserve! :)
They are fuckin legendary. I envy you. I wish I was at that party
I knew them already as well but am so glad they'll get a bit of shine on NPR. This is great
47soul, for When you're in a cantina on the far side of the Andromeda Galaxy negotiating intergalactic peace.
If Joe Strummer of The Clash were alive today, he'd be a massive 47 Soul fan. So great to see them go from their US debut at globalFEST last year to this amazing Tiny Desk Concert.
The synth player’s leads and patches are so good.
Thank you Tiny Desk!! 🇵🇸
This performance is so slept on man! The lyrics of Mo light and the beats are too deep
5:03 your welcome 🕺

Came here for the Thumbnail, stayed here for the music.
Siddharth Singh exactly
Came for guy jumping on the Tiny Desk, stayed and saved to my playlist for the music. Great stuff!
Love playing this in the background as I am going about my day ❤
Tbh, only clicked because the thumbnail made me wonder if the Tiny Desk was going to survive the antics of dad-stache over there.
But this is really good. Idk wtf it is, but I like it.
fusion music for you fresh from SHAM ( Levant ) ♥
Palestinian traditional music combined with modern music, and the dance he did on the disk is popular in the Levant (Palestine, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan) but the one he is doing is basically Palestinian and is called Dabkeh...
Look it up, both the band and the dance, you will not regret it.
Yo omg this was so fire.
Whenever I’m feeling down, this npr always brightens my day
Then you have to check idles at tiny desk when you start your week 😊
SOMEBODY GIVE THEM MORE LIGHT
Free Palestine 🇵🇸🇧🇷

3:30 in the morning, woke in pain here in Santa Fe New Mexico (just heard you sing “I don’t care where you’re from”!). I’m in pain and you guys made me happy, love your energy, wherever you are. I saved and will listen again...I’ll play along when I can. Music will unite us all...eventually...all of us...I have to hope.
No one ever danced that big on the tiny desk
If anyone has the time & energy.. I’d love a list of other favorite Palestinian artists/songs, even traditional resistance songs (as an Irish person kind of our thing) thanks so much in advance, would love to learn their dance!!
Saoirse don Phailistín!!!! 🇵🇸🇵🇸🇵🇸🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪♥️♥️♥️
BTW 47soul please come to Ireland!!! ♥️♥️♥️

I couldn't turn this even if I wanted to. They got the Tiny Desk benefit of my doubt and I got some thrilling new music. Thanks once again Tiny Desk. You never disappoint.
An awesome fusion of musical sounds and languages, you can't help but groove out to this! Thanks 47Soul and NPR!
They are fabulous live! Instant love when I saw them in Toronto in 2019 at the MIXTO festival! Pure awesomeness!❤😂🎉
Only discovered these cats a few months back. My new favorite band, for real!!
nobody:
me: I DONT CARE WHERE YOU FROM WHERE YOU FROM
8 people already disliking what they cant make... what is wrong with you... i love the energy here.
and what is wrong with you ? dislike something doesn't mean its bad, its a personnal opinion. You don't have to be condescending.
There're probably zionists🤭🤭
It's obviously zionists 😂😂 they can't make this, but they'll definitely steal
this was exactly the dose of fusion i needed today.

Tiny Desk is how I start my day! I love it when you showcase artists that open up American minds. Please continue to chip at the rampant xenophobia here.
We just need more light. Ain't that the truth!
I only knew Tareq as a solo artist under the name "El Far3i", but I'm soooo happy I finally discovered his band !
