- Ganz unscheinbar liegt der alte Flughafen „Butzweiler Hof" heute inmitten eines Neubau- und Industriegebietes. Dennoch war dieser Ort vor vielen Jahren der zweitgrößte Flughafen Deutschlands nach Berlin Tempelhof . Fliegerasse wie Werner Voss, Gerhard Fieseler und der bekannte „rote Baron" Manfred von Richthofen erhielten hier ihre ersten Flugstunden. 1926 wurde mit Unterstützung des Kölner Oberbürgermeisters Konrad Adenauer ein moderner Verkehrsflughafen errichtet, der sich bis zum zweiten Weltkrieg zum „Luftkreuz des Westens" entwickelte.
Nach dem Krieg allerdings wurde der Flugplatz stark verkleinert und fast ausschliesslich zu militärischen Zwecken genutzt. Der zivile Flugverkehr fand ab 1957 in Köln-Wahn statt.
Seit 1997 kümmert sich eine Stiftung (mit deren freundlicher Unterstützung dieser Film entstand), um die denkmalgeschützen Gebäude zu erhalten. Besonders bei der Restaurierung der Eingangshalle des Flughafens und der Ausstellungsräume hat man sich große Mühe gegeben, dem Traum vom Fliegen in seiner Blütezeit den Menschen heute näherzubringen.

Quite unimpressive lies the old airport "Butzweilerhof" now between new buildings and industrial area. Nevertheless, this place many years ago was the second-largest airport after Berlin Tempelhof. Flying aces like Werner Voss, Gerhard Fieseler and the famous "Red Baron" Manfred von Richthofen were given here their first flying lessons. 1926 with the support of the mayor of Cologne, Konrad Adenauer, a modern commercial airport was built, which is up to the Second World War developed to the "air cross of the West". After the war, however, the airport was greatly reduced in size and used almost exclusively for military purposes. The civilian air traffic in 1957 was held in Cologne-Wahn. Since 1997, a foundation takes care (with their kind support this film was made) to obtain the heritage building. Especially in the restoration of the entrance hall of the airport and the exhibition rooms they has taken great pains, to bring closer the dream of flying in his prime for the people today.

Hallo, Kurt....Bis vor wenigen Wochen wusste ich das auch nicht..zwar war5 mir der Name "Butzweiler Hof" geläufig, aber ich dachte immer der Flughafen wäre schon längst abgerissen gewesen...um so schöner war es dann zu sehen, das er doch noch existiert und das auch noch so gut erhalten...

Thank you for sharing this video with me. I recently purchase a scaled museum quality replica of one of only two 5 masted schooners ever to sail the seas. It was the German ship "Preussen". The only other country to construct a 5 masted schooner was France. The ship was built in the 1890's and was commissioned by Kaiser Wilhelm. If there are any historical records or models of the ship, it would make for a very interesting photo shoot.....Will

Hey Dirk .. erstaunlich daß dieses Gebäude vom Krieg verschont blieb ... habe gerade den Link in der Beschreibung angeklickt ... ( derzeit keine regulären Öffnungszeiten ) also wirklich ein " Lost Airport " .. ich würde sagen daß Du uns mal wieder an einen außergewöhnlichen Ort mitgenommen hast .. gefällt mir natürlich sehr.
Kleiner Hinweis ... Butzweiler Hof ist offizielle Außenstelle des Kölner Standesamtes.
Ja und das Ambiente für eine Hochzeitsfeier stimmt .. OK !
