As a short follow up to my recent two part installation series of the insulated roof panels on my workshop, I decided to do a comparison in costings between Insulated Roof Panels and a traditional cold roof Timber / EPDM method. I have received a lot of questions recently about my roof so thought I could try and put as much information out there for folk as possible as there appears to be quite a lot of interest in these systems and garden rooms in general at the moment. Best Wishes, Leo
UPDATE: According to my UA-cam friend Daffyd, the subtitles get very confusing when I get to the specifics of the costs. To clarify here, if we were to take a basic sq metre cost factoring in everything (panels, flashings, VAT, fixings etc) then the approximate sq M cost for the Insulated Roof Panels comes in around £60 per Sq M, and the traditional Timber / EPDM around £68 per Sq M. This does not factor in labour costs and the ceiling of the traditional method at this price would be uncovered. Hope this makes sense😀
Please feel free to get in touch if you have any questions regarding this video. I am certainly no expert, but I have just been through the process of installing these and you might be thinking of doing the same.

Wow, what a highway robbery price hike in lumber! 😳
Mate, so glad you chose to go with the panels instead,
they are far superior all round, even if the price of lumber didn't go up,
it's still better and will out last the alternative! 👍🏽

Great video - perfect timing as I am planning a new garage roof. Like you I am a keen amateur and would do it all myself. I did not fancy the options very much (they probably scarred me just a little) but this insulated panel approach is great - I am really grateful and your videos are a real motivation. For me the cost difference is fairly marginal when you spread it over years of service, but the lightweight, quick, easy, tidy aspect of this new system just make it such a winner for me - looks smart too and will have a long life. Keep this great stuff coming!

    • @Hand-i-Craft

Thanks Neil and yes I would definitely recommend these panels. What I didn’t touch upon too much is the time / labour cost saved. Yourself and one other could get a garage roof size done in a day easily with all the flashings etc. Good luck and hope it goes well 😀👍

Excellent. Thanks Leo. That really does confirm the way I would want to go. It looks like a beautifully finished roof. Finished on the inside as well. One thing I may research, unless you can tell me? I wonder if it possible to fit some sort of roof light/window in. Extra daylight is Always welcomed in a workshop.

Cheers Ashley, very kind of you. I believe there is a roof light option, if you have a butchers on the panelsell website then I’m sure there is a part where they address this. Decided against this option myself as natural light for filming isn’t the best to work with, but could well see that appeal for garden rooms 👍👍

It would be handy if you also published your list of items from Panelsell so that I don't forget an item. Great info and I will go back and watch your videos of putting the roof up. Good video. After completing a 7mx3.5m base using the oakwood rod system, I'm no longer sure I want to go ahead and frame out the walls and roof. I'm looking at SIP panels for the walls and Kingspan 80mm panels for the roof. Its a better system all round, no cold bridging, less work/effort, more reliable, and with current timber prices, cheaper all round. Makes complete sense.

The roof of my shed is 22' and 10' (which gives over hang over the 20'x8' shed) cost me around £200 for the roof and I made the rafters out of 3"x2" treated timber and I can stand on the roof. Without the wood that's around £10 per meter. As for the wood, it was about a pound a metre if I remember correctly.

Even if it was a couple of 100 more, I would consider it due to the ease of putting it up. You're right about the wood. I got some last year for a small electronics workbench top for my cellar and even that was 60 quid. Good job I had scrap for the frame which saved a few quid. How much do you think in total for the workshop material wise? Are you looking at maybe 4 grand?

    • @Hand-i-Craft
      @Hand-i-Craft  3 роки тому +1

Cheers pal and yes the cost of timber now is crazy. I’ll have to do a full costings at the end and I was lucky I bought most of the timber and boards around this time last year. I wouldn’t like to guess at this stage, but if I had to I’d say (including the roof but not electrics and ground works) I reckon a bit under 4.

@@Hand-i-Craft The place where I got mine had so many different lengths, from 1-2m offcuts to full 6m panels, and the other one only had 6m panels, so plenty of choice.
I couldn't quickly find any places in the uk that let you just order your own number of panels, or even offer to cut them for you, it seems panelsell has cornered the market over there and they only deal with lots of x number of panels. Actionclad may be worth a call, I can't find any pricing for them. But it may be worth calling around other places that deal with new panels to see if they have b-grade stock.
Since they're like lego, it may be worth getting a lot of 6 panels from A and another lot of 8 panels from B if you need 13 panels or whatever.
