Insane video dude, love what you did with the cinematics too! thanks for putting in the effort to make such a bangin video. devs will love this, WE NEED PART 2!!!!!!
Joe is by far the best part of the game. The pure shock I experienced and realization I came to when Harvey pointed the gun at Joe, “Bruce’s parent’s killer”, I don’t think I’ll ever get to experience that same feeling again
Just realized that Batman retroactively quoted Joe in Arkham City after Talia "killed" Joker: Arkham Shadow: Joe: "I told you not to fight with them" Malone: "I had no choice." Joe: "You always have a choice, kid." Arkham City: Batman: "You didn't need to..." Talia: "Why? You would never do it, you left me no choice." Batman: "There's ALWAYS a choice."
One of my favorite parts of Origins was when the first guy you save is terrified of you. It was such an effective way to show that people don't know The Batman we played as in the other games yet, without forced exposition or hamfisted dialouge, just through one characters reaction to another.
The story of Origins is really underrated. The story of shadow is great too. A lot of love and attention went into it. Shadow fits into the timeline really well! You can tell the devs at Camaflaj are real fans of the arkham games.
It's crazy how a VR game set in the Arkhamverse is a far more beloved and worthy inclusion to the Arkahmvers than Suicide Squad Kills The Justice League ever was. It is genuinely shocking how good this game is and how much care and passion was put into it despite being a VR game, and yet it has good combat and gameplay, great voice acting and one of the best stories set in this game universe that we've gotten. I really loved how well Bruce's arc was written in this game, seeing how his approach to criminals won't truly solve anything and how it only feeds into his inner Shadow. The way they tie in Matches Malone and have you actually care about Joe Chill and explore his guilt is really well written, and honestly, my favourite take on the idea of Batman meeting the man who killed his parents. I love that Joe, while he took away the lives of Bruce's parents and deserves to be imprisoned, but instead, he's remorseful and hates himself over how desperate he was at one point in his life. The way they also recontextualise Two-Face's origin is genuinely great and one of the most sympathetic takes on Two-Face, yet as Two-Face barely got time to shine in the previous games, seeing this much depth was a welcome surprise. Both Rogger Craig Smith and Troy Baker gave excellent performances.
Been awhile since you’ve popped up on by UA-cam, I missed the video essays, you’ve literally helped me with my writing and essays in school over the years
I’m not sure what it is, but when I watch your takes and listen to your perspective on each video, the way you masterfully convey your thoughts-whether I agree with them or not-always leaves me feeling proud and teary-eyed, as if someone finally understands what each of these mediums is trying to express.
Listen… Respect to Kevin but I truly feel Roger Smith brings so much depth to the character. Batman is so well portrayed by him, he’s for sure my choice actor for Batmans voice
Glad to see the Arkham universe finally get some love and care after all these years. Rocksteady are rumoured to be making an Asylum remake, but for numerous reasons, I have very low expectations.
Personally I'd much prefer them to go the Batman Beyond route and leave those old games as they were. Beyond is such a great premise to build a game off of, I really don't know why it's taken so long before literally anything has decided to embrace it.
I know it wont happen but please let Camouflaj Studios make another Arkham game! Not only is it well written and respects the fans of the OG Arkham Trilogy and Origins but it has heart and charm behind it as well and even a good mystery to boot. Im hoping they keep the license and make a sequel to this game as its hinted that Poison Ivy will be the next big bad if they make another game that is.
The Arkham verse is so important to me and despite not playing it, it’s certainly the best narrative in a Batman game I’ve ever seen for a while. It goes to show if you got the right ppl who respect the continuity & lore of Arkham and the comics, you’ve made one of the best Batman games ever!
The best narrative in a batman game? Are you Sure? They have a lot of flaws, contradict each other multiple times and do not properly build up important characters with enough time.
@@djb9267 In this one game.. also he said in a while. He's right too, most agree. Also you're completely wrong. The contradictions are completely minimal and do not affect gameplay. Most contradictions have to do with character bios or gadgets, if you overlook these small details (which anyone who isn't just looking to whine would do) the games are amazing. As for flaws I'm interested in what you would consider a flaw. Lastly the character building definitely is there. Asylum sets up titan-sick Joker, plans for city, Killer Croc/Scarecrow escaping. City plays on all this and sets up the Scarecrows return in Knight. Sure some of it is random but this is an already established entity (Batman) we don't need another origin story for every character because that's not the point of the series. And if it is you're more than welcome to play Origins or Shadow which do an amazing job at setting up the future.
@@djb9267 also wanted to add many of the side character return and have fully fledged stories; Bane, Azrael, Joker, Harley, Scarecrow. The only character that could really fit into this category is Arkham Knight which sure the story wasn't the best but Shadow completely nails this style and Knight makes up for this basically everywhere else
@FurkanRT04 I know it’s a retcon but I expected something like that going in. For how much I love Arkham origins, the continuity was never the same after that lol.
I love that now when I watch Batman in the Arkham games offer help it isn’t because he knows how to cure the pain that has been ensued but he knows how and what they’re feeling. He’s lived in their shoes and has been dealt the same cards as them. He understand them and offers the embrace of one broken human to another, a chance to rebuild what has been destroyed.
On one hand, it’s a shame that not everyone’s going to be able to experience the story for themselves due to it being on VR, but for those who can they’re able to fully immerse themselves in it like never before through the eyes of Batman himself. It’s a double-edged sword.
This may or may not be covered in Part 2 but I'm just going to mention it here before I forget. I LOVE that Joker just immediately recognizes Batman through the fake voice he uses, which carries the odd implication that knew Joker knew Bruce was Batman the whole time and just DID NOT CARE and actively stopped people from looking under the mask just because he loved Batman more as a force (in the eyes of his goons) than as a man behind a mask. Perhaps he was really entertained that his goons were so scared of him more when he was a force than as a man.
I just watched a playthrough of the game and wow the story was absolutely amazing. These people making the game really understood and valued the original Arkham games and the world they set up
At the end of Arkham shadow, you take off your mask, but the best part is that there’s no prompt or indication, it’s not even something you’ve done before in the game, but the story is so powerful that I and everyone else I’ve seen play it has without question instantly removed that mask without a second thought.
lol, I kept trying to rip my Cowl off before the game ever prompted me to, before it would let me. The dialogue and the emotional beats of the game made it *so clear* that that was exactly what I - what *Batman* - should do at that moment.
I have to say the story was amazing and the gameplay was awesome. If I had to show people one game to demonstrate what VR is, I'd choose this game. It's the best VR game that exists.

Man, you got me to watch a full 30 minutes review of a game I will TRUTHFULLY never play. And I don't even regret having sat through it. Well done, young man, well done!
i started thinking that this was an amazing, complete analysis of the whole story of arkham shadow and the character arc bruce undergoes. and then you mentioned harvey and i realized we were only scratching the surface
I started this video wanting to boot up origins again, and by the end I felt like maybe it would be better if I didn't, just to spare the people of Gotham from the big bad bat. Shit man, you have a way of talking about capeshit that is so sincere and captivating and frankly inspiring. it's always a pleasure to watch one of your videos, and I cannot wait for part two.
Not for a moment did I put two and two together and figure out that Joe was Joe Chill. I don't know why. It wasn't until I was climbing the rubble of the boat and finally listening to Harvey's message that I literally out loud said, "Oh my god, Joe." and it clicked. As a Batman fan, there are just things that you know about the story. Or at least things you think you know. For me, it's that Bruce knows who killed his parents. I had forgotten there was a time where he didn't, because obviously he does in the comics. He either knows, or it's not really relevant. And so far in the Arkham series, it hasn't seemed all that relevant. So when we meet Joe and we talk to him and get to know him, and Bruce doesn't immediately recognize him, it didn't even cross my mind. I got to know the guy throughout the game. He gave me his poster, and we bonded. I was sad when I walked up and he wasn't there. I was worried about him. I even briefly considered he might be the Rat King, but thought, "Nah, not Joe. He'd never do this." The level of affection I had for Joe throughout this game made the reveal that he was, in fact, Joe Chill hit me all the harder. Like Bruce, Joe Chill has always just been the monster in the dark to me. A coward who orphaned a young boy for some cash and pearls. Every time we'd see him in comics or movies, even when he showed remorse, I never really believed him. I never forgave him. But this man wasn't a monster. This man was broken. He was sad. He was traumatized. But most of all... he was kind... I mean, hell, he sold me Gray Ghost merch for my cell. He wasn't evil! He was my friend. So when Harvey told me that he'd found the bastard who killed my parents, that he'd been in Blackgate, picked up for something completely different, it was staggering. I almost fell because suddenly I was recontextualizing every conversation I'd had with Joe. Finally, I understand his outburst at Group Therapy. The things he didn't want to talk about. I get it now. But it changed how I looked at him. Suddenly, he wasn't just my buddy Joe at the commissary. He was Joe Chill. He was the man who took everything from me. But when I took off that cowl and he realized what he'd done, what he'd created, and the first thing he does is apologize... I felt it. The first time ever that Joe Chill has apologized to Bruce Wayne and I actually believed him. Because I could see the remorse when he wasn't faced with the direct victim. I knew it was true. I don't know if I forgave him at that moment. I don't think I ever could. But I finally understood. I finally saw Joe Chill as a man. Not a monster. This game will forever change how I see the death of the Waynes. This game is pretty fuckin' great. Another thing this game changed was the way I viewed Harvey Dent. Troy Baker's performance as Harvey Dent/Two-Face is nothing short of spectacular. Two-Face is now one of my favorite Batman villains because of this game. I'm really excited to hear what you have to say about him in Part 2.
I was ready to skip out on this game entirely as someone who doesn't have VR, but your passionate rant about this game genuinely makes me so intrigued. I love your enthusiasm about Batman, I'll have to find a way to seek out this game somehow.
I’m one of those folks that can’t buy the game (not just because of the money but also the motion sickness I’d get) and I can’t even watch the video game “movie” of the game because of the motion sickness. Then you posted this video. And Holy. SHIT. This video…this story…it’s so compelling. I can’t wait for part 2 now. Another wonderful video.
I love your videos man. You do a great job of talking about and highlighting all the hard work and little details that make video games art and my only regret is that a lot of this stuff gets missed by most gamers who just want to get into the action. Thank you for reminding us why we love video games so much ❤
by the time the quest 4 comes out, you can probably get a new quest 3 or used one for very cheap. That's probably going to be a couple of years, though.
There was this moment where after rating out falcon I got worried he was going to send men to jump me and then I remembered I’m Batman. Really shows how just like Bruce we as the player fully give into the matches identity but in reality we aren’t actually a powerless prisoner
May not have been the game we wanted in terms of it being a VR game but it was definitely one we needed for the Arkham series after suicide squad game pretty much ruined the franchise. Well done to the studio that made this game. They Paid better respect to the series than the devs that created it.
This game really was great people just didn’t like it because it wasn’t a mainline console game but if anything games like half-life:Alyx proved that vr can be great
I mean I don't think people are saying the game is bad, they just hate that the game being VR means that the majority of people won't be able to afford playing it
@@Moonking_Is_Back its still insane to pay over 300 bucks for a game that is 15 hours tops, not only that, not everyone is from america, so that price only goes up if youre in an unlucky country
Just a comment on Bruce's character development. Yes he doesn't really change during the first two but Batman exists on a "flat arc" just like the Animated series for the most part. Very common thing to do with hero characters and I think a wholly intentional. I think this really helps with the "feeling like Batman" element that people often bring up.
I've been waiting for them to bring in Matches Malone, and they totally nailed it! I really thought we’d see him in Matt Reeves' The Batman, but unfortunately, that didn’t happen. A bit off-topic, but I don't really get the Bruce Wayne in Matt Reeves' film. There's no distinction between the traumatized kid Bruce Wayne, with the billionaire, philanthropist, playboy Bruce Wayne, and The Batman. I just think it's a bit odd that having Bruce being Batman for 2 years would surely have given him a lot of change already. But hey, maybe I'm wrong.
Seriously, the way you talk about Batman; The nuance, his core, motivations, dreams, grief, and all that. Keep it coming. The only other thing I can't wait to see in theaters other than James Gunn's smiling, will stop to save a cat on a tree Superman, are your movie adaptations for this Mythos.
Ummm, that's the point???? Bruce did say he's only focused on Batman only: "This is my family legacy," Batman said, but until the Riddler said he was "inspired" by him, Batman literally freaked out, calling him a psychopath. Batman is defending himself here. Batman realizing being Batman 24/7 fueled the chaos for Gotham, not looking out for the citizens, was also the problem; Riddler even said Bruce doesn't care about his people too, thus the ending about him looking at his mistakes makes sense and is not outta nowhere; the ending is literally proof; he's going to be Bruce Wayne in the sequel; there needs to be a balance. Ok, to put it simply, the first shot of Batman is him looking at the Bat symbol, and the last shot is Batman looking at the people being carried on the chopper, basically him transitioning to Bruce Wayne. Or you want to take Nolan. Batman suddenly figured out all that stuff right off the bat without proper build-ups?.
I really like the idea of the game, but tbh the only thing I disliked was that Warner decided to make it for the Meta Quest, for me it was like them making Arkham City an Ouya exclusive
For FUCK sake! Why did they do this in VR??? I’ve been crying out for a sequel to Origins for years and they do THIS? They better adapt this into a proper console game.
UA-cam compression completely butchers the gorgeous visuals, I know it probably looks good on the Quest 3 but sheesh the graphics look pretty bad blown up on my monitor lol
Honestly I still think Knight has the closest to character development for Bruce out of the whole series. Alfred putting out one final plea for the mythical figure of Batman because he knows Bruce is gone still haunts me, not to mention Bruce pushing away all his family in a vain attempt to keep them safe.
A piece of my soul dies when I hear someone call VR a fad, like VR has had a sizable community long before cuckerberg bought out oculus and changed it to meta, it’s just now it’s streamlined and is becoming the next iPhone. And honestly I’m glad this is a vr exclusive game, because of how the format changes your relation to the world around you like it’s an entirely different experience, I just wish it wasn’t solely for the meta quest.
This video is about this game it's made me cry thank you man, Love the videos and the way you tell/make your videos just amazing, I'm so glad I'm sub to u 😆😭❤❤❤❤❤ thanks again bro I look forward to your next video!!!!!!! :)
I thought it was a great story and didn’t care it wasn’t made by the previous makers, it was still cannon to me.
He'd never do this."
The level of affection I had for Joe throughout this game made the reveal that he was, in fact, Joe Chill hit me all the harder.
I really recomend saving up for a Quest 3s, they're only $300 USD and have so many fantastic games which a regular console couldn't play
I second this, but honestly if you can save the 300 save the extra bit for the 3. The lenses are phenomenal
@@CapableFlawless the lenses are a notable improvement, but not enough for me to recommend a first time vr to user spend an extra 200 bucks on.
Thank you Mike! I hope Part 2 lives up to your hype.
This was such a good video, really interesting. Makes me want to try this game out, and I’m not a VR guy
I love your videos man. You do a great job of talking about and highlighting all the hard work and little details that make video games art and my only regret is that a lot of this stuff gets missed by most gamers who just want to get into the action. Thank you for reminding us why we love video games so much ❤
Frickin' amazing story.
God teared up a bit.
dangit, I kinda wanna play the game, but I dont know if I ever will. I also wanna watch this video, but I dont wanna be spoiled. oh the faults of man.
Avoid the spoilers it’s so worth it
by the time the quest 4 comes out, you can probably get a new quest 3 or used one for very cheap. That's probably going to be a couple of years, though.
Great video
Love the videos hitop. Never change
❤
Nothing better than an Hitop Arkham vid
Just beat this game yesterday. This is perfect timing.
I already have 133 hours in it
It's that replayable? Challenge maps?
@@agentnacho2029There’s a handful of challenge maps
@@agentnacho2029 yes theres challenge maps, and they're adding new ones in the next update
@ there’s only six challenge maps right now but they’re adding more this month and then adding a few more next month
There was this moment where after rating out falcon I got worried he was going to send men to jump me and then I remembered I’m Batman. Really shows how just like Bruce we as the player fully give into the matches identity but in reality we aren’t actually a powerless prisoner
Been following on twitter, I’ve been hyped for this
I played it on my friends meta quest, I'm telling you all it's worth the money.
I absolutely loved this game. Camouflaj did an amazing job. And as someone who gets motion sickness I was able to play for hours at a time.
May not have been the game we wanted in terms of it being a VR game but it was definitely one we needed for the Arkham series after suicide squad game pretty much ruined the franchise.
Well done to the studio that made this game. They Paid better respect to the series than the devs that created it.
This game really was great people just didn’t like it because it wasn’t a mainline console game but if anything games like half-life:Alyx proved that vr can be great
I mean I don't think people are saying the game is bad, they just hate that the game being VR means that the majority of people won't be able to afford playing it
@@crystalalumina its the cheapest console on the market
@@Moonking_Is_Back its still insane to pay over 300 bucks for a game that is 15 hours tops, not only that, not everyone is from america, so that price only goes up if youre in an unlucky country
@@CoNnOr5899 you have to pay $500 to have a console
@@Moonking_Is_Back even better
big fan of this Mr. Films. Can’t wait for part 2.
This game is genuinely great.
Origins was probably my favorite
Watch how this man single handedly sold VR headsets for a multi-billion dollar company with this one weird trick! (lol)
Arkham shadow was an emotional epic return to the early dates of the Arkham Batman .
I don't think I'll ever get to play this game, but damn would I like to after this video. I'm so excited to hear more from your next one
I love your passion when it comes to batman so much. I wish you could write for Warner Brothers
You put SO much effort into this, and it’s no surprise that it paid off. FUCKING BRILLIANT analysis, I can’t wait for Dec 20th.
The title put me off (because everyone SHOULD be playing this game), but honestly this video is an absolute masterpiece.
Hey man, loved the video and can’t wait for part 2. Just out of curiosity what music did you use in the background?
Great video!
Hey Hitop films, cool videos 👍😎
I was looking forward to this review
Thought you were gonna talk about Origins and I would riot
That I won't play? Speak for yourself I'm 100% playing this game
11:44 Looks like someone enjoyed The Penguin on Max 😆
DID MICKEY JUST DID WHAT TO THAT BLOCK OF CHEESE………… 😅
Thanks for covering this game I could never buy the vR headset for this game.
Warner didn't make it a meta quest, a VR studio pitched it to them as a VR game, it wouldn't exist if it wasn't a VR game
Amazing video, for us that aren't able to play the game!
6:22 this got me laughing 🤣🤣🤣
literally me.
@@HiTopFilms keep up the work the visuals and everything was very entertaining and eye-catching.
Daaaaaamn...!!! I want to play this now!
For FUCK sake! Why did they do this in VR??? I’ve been crying out for a sequel to Origins for years and they do THIS? They better adapt this into a proper console game.
Let’s goooo goat is back
UA-cam compression completely butchers the gorgeous visuals, I know it probably looks good on the Quest 3 but sheesh the graphics look pretty bad blown up on my monitor lol
Day 1, I said this game would be amazing, but everybody called me an idiot cause it was VR. Honestly the second best Arkham game for me.
hi top is officially back ?
Never left, but I'm very proud of this one!
Honestly I still think Knight has the closest to character development for Bruce out of the whole series. Alfred putting out one final plea for the mythical figure of Batman because he knows Bruce is gone still haunts me, not to mention Bruce pushing away all his family in a vain attempt to keep them safe.
I WANT THE ARKHAM ORIGINS REMASTER
A piece of my soul dies when I hear someone call VR a fad, like VR has had a sizable community long before cuckerberg bought out oculus and changed it to meta, it’s just now it’s streamlined and is becoming the next iPhone. And honestly I’m glad this is a vr exclusive game, because of how the format changes your relation to the world around you like it’s an entirely different experience, I just wish it wasn’t solely for the meta quest.
Damn. Good work
Thank you.
His love for Batman >
This video is about this game it's made me cry thank you man, Love the videos and the way you tell/make your videos just amazing, I'm so glad I'm sub to u 😆😭❤❤❤❤❤ thanks again bro I look forward to your next video!!!!!!! :)
I thought it was a great story and didn’t care it wasn’t made by the previous makers, it was still cannon to me. I’m hoping the Insomnia Spiderman games goes this route and makes a prequel game of Peter just starting out. Who cares if we’ve seen the origin before, there’s so many cool things they could do.
I’m sorry I had another question! Where is the audio @ 30:53?
