Chemical Dipping an MG Midget

- Removing all the paint and rust off this classic MG Midget! This is probably one of the smallest cars I’ve ever dipped, and I decided to take a different approach with this video. Figured I’d give the ASMR crowd some love with leaving everything and real time and not yapping a whole bunch lol. Let me know what you all think of this format in the comments. I’ll keep up what I normally do but if everyone likes the videos like this I’ll throw a few in every now and again!

That body is probably the best Midget/Sprite I have seen. Most I work on are huge rust buckets, even my old 65 MGB would probably disintegrate in those chemicals. Thanks for showing us how you do it.
Yours was the highest comment - and I was JUST about to post saying that if you'd done that to my '64 MGB - the ropes would have come out attached to little shreds of nothing.... :D
@@DrFiero same if my 73 MGB project went in there, only ropes would come out.
@@bobulele - The really sad thing is... I got my '64 in about 1976 and it was already rotted away. All that's left now is the gear shift knob and tach. The rest was so far gone it got shredded around '85.
I posted it before, but I’m convinced an MG would rust in space. I did many, and that is the cleanest one I’ve ever seen
With many early monocoque designs, water traps, cavity protection, electrolysis corrosion because of unsuitable material contact, weren't well understood.
I think there were rustier MG’ s coming out of the factory when they were brand new, unbelievable!
😂I had one on 1967…. Almost new. Lived in Oregon and rusted away o er 10 years.
@@TheMilwaukieDan is Oregon in the ‘rust belt’ ?
@@topline620 yes and no… we have a lot of rain mist years. Tgat rain falls onctge western part of tge state. Tge eastern oart is high desert and very dry. No salt is used anywhere on the highways which refuses thd rust issues.
The rust was fitted at the factory for no extra cost.
I’m convinced an MG would rust in space
That has to be cleanest example I’ve ever seen in my life as far as the rust goes. I can’t believe how rust free it is, it’s a miracle.
It's pretty cool that this Midget didn't completely disappear in the acid tank like most of us expected. I worked for an MG Dealer and swear that rust was a standard factory installed item like the Lucas electrical system. You remember Lucas don't you, the Prince of Darkness?
"A gentleman does not motor about after dark." - Joseph Lucas, probably
Lucas screaming fuel pumps oh the delights
Beautifully shot and 4K doing it full justice. Nice one. Someone found a real peach as far as MG's go. A barn find maybe?
automobile asmr!!!!
who doesn’t love the dip?!!
Glad to see your production quality is steadily increasing! Can't wait for more content.
Impressive! I own a Midget 1500, so all of that structure is very familiar. Somebody got a good one, it looks pretty solid.
Most rust free MG I've ever seen.
Impressive. Both condition of car and the cleaning/striping process...
I would enjoy seeing a sit down type video, of one of the shops that you do work for, that paints and covers all their techniques they do, once they receive the clean metal body's chassis's from you, their system that works or is proven to work so steps are not missed for the "at home" guys. I realize that is allot to ask, and is time consuming. I also think, if a guy or gal were doing this high detail measure of work, that they already know what is required or good and the bad things to do. But for those who are just getting started and use this paint removal process, what the next steps are to do, for proper prep work? Either way, I really enjoy your videos.
Amazing condition for one of those things!!
Must have lived in the desert southwest 😮
My 1971 Midget had a thin trunk floor...on the frame extensions on front, the clips that held the A-arms on were corroded (under the washers) and SPLIT! Ah well, we all have stories...
eet shore is purty now. 🙃 Excellent work, filming, and editing.
Very solid-looking Midget! Did you do the doors and other panels as well?
It looks to be in quite reasonable condition - it's still got floors and sills! Someone's got a basically sound structure to work on.
lol at the roger rabbit reference.Well done.
Drove around a 68 or 69 edition when I was a teenager in exchange for helping my dad maintain it. Great ride, but their primary flaw was an excess of British engineering. Even when I was 17 there obvious technical improvements to be made - I would have started by replacing the engine with something that wasn't better suited to a lawn mower.
The only thing that protects these cars from rust is the oil and grease that cakes under these cars.
Beautiful to watch. Is it dried and sealed with a special method after this treatment? ;-)
Pretty solid car!
Interesting that these are such smooth bodied cars but anything not visible is all hard box and straight panels. I guess that kept the costs down for a small postwar auto maker.
I’ll never look at a rusted car the same way. Every vehicle you strip the paint then the rust, I feel I must have to restore. LOL
Hahahaha
Do you also dip the doors, hood, etc?
Looks like one of the last cars, 1500 Triumph engine. Dry state car as well, excellent condition. The shell might be worth more in Europe?
That's in pretty good nick. Anyone remember Pete C's Cortina, Bramble? Much of it was like Swiss cheese. 😁
made it like new , very cool
What do you use to prevent flash rust at the end of the process?
At 5:05 - neutralizing dip to prevent flashing
Man o man is that pressure washer badass, sounds like a swarm of pissed-off Sand Hornets on the scrap...
Una pregunta , los restos de óxido y el polvo que quedan dentro de los cajones del compacto y zócalos laterales y que en el vídeo no se ve como los eliminas porque de no hacerlo el óxido volverá sin ninguna duda ,podrías explicarlo?
I have two Bugeye Sprites i need dipped! They wont be as good as this midget body though. Really wondering what this costs and how to get the chassis to you.
What would one expect to pay for this and how long afterwards would you have to at least get primer on the body?
I’m 5’11” and had my 1970 for six or seven years, longest trip from San Diego to Wisconsin.
Great shape! Good job!
What a great condition chassis, do that to a UK MG most of it would be down the drain 😂
So what do you do with the Vin number on the tin tag on cars when you get cars in??
This Mg is a late 1500 model, and probably mothballed, to be in this excellent condition, my 66 Mg Midget , would of gone into the first dip, and just the ropes would of come out !
😂😂😂😂😂
Great video
On the acid bath, what is the Ph at and do you ever get spill over on the tanks?
Ph is around 3 I believe. It occasionally splashes but all of our shops floors lead to a contained pit. So if it happens it just goes where it needs to. Also the acid is food grade comparable to a strong vinegar.
how much does something like this costs? I have a 1953 chevy 3100 truck and would love to do this to it.
Must be a dry state car because that's in amazing condition.
I get curious, where did this car live? Was it ever used? Is it one of the newly build. Don’t get it. No rust of one of the worst rust buckets in the UK? Puzzling story? A mystery. Was it someone’s dining rum on display from birth?
That's a pretty solid tub. Seems like a electro coat Zinc dip at the end would do wonders for longevity. Where do those drains go? seems like that's some pretty toxic waste.
If your Seriously going to restore a car this is the best way . Screw sandblasting Media blasting and all that other crap. As you already know the first step is to remove the paint and Bondo
The second dip is to get rid of rust. Then neutralize it and it's ready to go on a rotisserie.
That's pretty cool. One of those might be fun to drive if I was like 5'5 140 lb lol. 😂
If I remember correctly, they have surprisingly ample legroom.
they actually have enough leg room for 6+ feet
That is a clean car
This helps me forget about the persecution I'm going through. 👍

Looking Great
Where are the doors hood fenders trunk lid rtc
What would happen if you power washed it the next day, would it still get this clean?
How much did that cost and can you e-coat it afterwards?
How much does something like this cost??
I’ve always been curious,
what are the zip-ties for.?
Can you chemical dip things like wrought iron or cast iron Victorian era fences
Yep I get them all the time. Did a whole cast iron spiral stair case one time. It was huge
Are there any other unique items that you’ve been asked to acid strip? For example - gas pump, cast iron bench or statue, airplane parts, etc.
After all the rinsing, what is used to stop rust starting?
Nothing, hes stuck in a perpetual cycle of dipping, rinsing, dipping, rinsing…
How much does this cost per shell.? Please.
I dipped my Mini Cooper S race car ipn 1980 and it is still rust free in 20023
That's a hell of a pressure washer
I gotta say that one is in remarkably good condition. Almost expected it to be swiss cheese, given their poor rust reputation....
I thought about getting my car chemically Stripped I just have one question what happens to all of the paint that's on the inside of frame rails and places that you can't get too Later do they stay with bare metal on it so that they would probably rust out later that's My only concern
These cars and most from that era were never rust treated from the factory, only paint that reached them was on outside surfaces, lf you rebuild a car now you would rust proof the inner surfaces "after" it was painted as paint doesn't stick to oily surface of rust proofing chemicals
The factory rust treatment was wax oil sprayed into those areas. you can still get the wax oil today. the wax oil worked well, it was other design issues that caused the rust
Where are you located? I would love to bring my MGB to you for dipping :-)
Where are you located?
Super👏👏👏
you know they have to be happy with that, very little deterioration, I expected far more
Не хватает еще ванны с грунтом для окраски погружением как на завлде
Spridget!
Do you also buy used cars from scrap yards and restore their shells to sell to highest bidders? I could only imagine you would be making a ton more money...
Especially if you let a few of the popular restore channels know what you have available... Power Nation, Motor Trend or Gunpowder & Gasoline as example..
Vice Grip Garage I bet have a few cars that could use your services.. I guess location could be an issue but buyers would pay shipping..
Those "Morris Minor & Oxford" Cars are pretty sweet little rides
I wonder if it was a US dry State car.
I found myself ducking to avoid the back-spray. It felt like I was washing it.
That guy cleaned right up after his first dip didn’t he. I’m guessing that isn’t exactly what you would call a ringing endorsement of British car manufacturers from the 70’s/80’s. Why you no say anything in this video ? I kept waiting for the body condition analysis 🤨
How much do you charge for this??
3k for the whole process
@@minute_of_dangle Thank you!
@@minute_of_dangle For someone who has spent weeks stripping a single car using gel stripper and abraisivres. dipping is a WAY better aproach and worth the money to achieve an infintely better result in every regard. It's a no-brainer really.
@@minute_of_dangle that is amazing value for money. I used to be a vehicle body repairer and the labour and man hours it takes to manually remove paint, sealer and undersealnis horrendous.
Well done! Price ?
Wow
There may be many fine counter-examples, but my brother's Midget taught me to beware of mixing "mechanical" with "British". I hear from other UA-camrs that Range Rover is tending to prove me right.
Wow
How did someone find one that is not Swiss Cheese
I prefer the voice tour.
Ususally I would disagree knowing how grating some youtubers can be to listen to. But this guy has a natural ability to present well without "over-producing" the final cut. I have to agree with you there.

What’s the life expectancy in your job?
how can the YT channel called Insider Cars copy your videos and get millions of views and you get 80k views?
Chemical Dipping an MG midget sounds like it would break some medical ethics.
All cars of this time were rust buckets.
They don’t go fast enough to get out of the way
😂
Thanks for showing the undercarriage
Oh, hier hat wieder einer entdeckt das man mit YT Kohle machen kann und nun wird Video für Video hochgeladen und das Gleiche gezeigt. Hauptsache die Kasse klingelt.🤡
Not ASMR. Too loud.
