"Do we believe in dinosaurs?" is kind of a strange question, isn't it? More often than not, it's actually kids asking these questions, or parents asking it because their kids are asking them, and the parents wouldn't know how to address that. But to ask a sheikh if "we" believe in dinosaurs, is really kinda bizar to me. It's like asking if it's ok to believe in mammoths, or the dodo bird, or trilobites. As if there's a religious ruling on that. Would you ask if it's ok to believe in gravity or plate tectonics? What many people don't understand is that Dinosauria just constitutes one Clade of extinct organisms. It just so happens to be the most popular group of dead creatures, but there's so much more besides dinosaurs. The question therefor extends to all extinct organisms, and ought to be interpreted as: "Do we believe that the world used to be populated by a myriad of different creatures that aren't extant anymore?" And of course, the underlying question often pertains to the topics of ancient history, prehistory, deep time, the natural world, the animal kingdom, archaeology and paleontology, the age of the earth, the age of the universe, and the evolution of species. All of that is often condensed, both by Muslims as well as non-Muslims, to the simple inquiry; "What about dinosaurs?" If the friends, parents, teachers, scholars, and shuyukh don't offer our children a reasonable response to that, then that might become problematic for them, since some of these topics start interacting and interfering with their Islamic worldview. So there's a lot of meaning behind what appears to be just a simple question; "Do we believe in dinosaurs?" For those who are asked that question, but themselves have zero knowledge of the topic, or think they have some kind of insight after having read a Wiki article or something; perhaps it's unwise for them to speak on the matter with any kind of authority, because denying their existence, for example, or ridiculing the whole concept of fossil evidence, or regurgitating outdated (Christian) arguments (e.g. "the Cambrian Explosion") and nomenclature (e.g. "missing links" and "transitional forms"), really doesn't work anymore in today's world and in light of modern day information. And yet, I see this all the time: Muslims approaching the topic from those angles. It's a scientific topic that can overlap with our religious worldview, and so both aspects ought to be taken into account. If we're unable to provide a coherent response, then our kids, or our children's children, especially those living in the West, but not exclusively; might go to the non-Muslims for answers. The (historical) dynamic between Christians and scientists often pertained to the false dichotomy (they both accepted, and still present) in terms of creationism versus evolution. Muslims have bought into that; copy-pasting the Christian side of the argument, without really formulating our own response. We don't have to accept the either/or preposition. Neither the Christians nor the atheists have a good understanding of what creation really means. And atheists don't get to own science and evolution. They don't have a right to those things. It's not theirs. Why do we hand these terms to them; especially evolution..? Evolution refers to the gradual morphological changes that occur in organisms over time. Change entails the cessation of one state (of being), characteristic, or reality, and the emergence of a new one. Cessation and emergence means ending and beginning, i.e. annihilation and creation. All change is by definition created, and yet, we collectively have this knee-jerk response whenever they drop the term "evolution" in a discussion. Evolution just proves the createdness of the tree of life. It's just another proof for the existence of The Creator SWT. So now the real question comes to mind: "What about Adam?" As if there are no explanations for that. You see, when I was a kid fascinated by extinct dinosaurs, growing up in the West with no Islamic community to turn to: I had to figure these things out on my own. And alhamdulillah, I did, and did so relatively early on, because it really isn't that difficult. Which is why I'm somewhat amazed that learned people aren't addressing these topics properly, and many are still trying to refute the existence of extinct species, or talking about missing links; and they clearly don't know what they're on about. They'll read books that criticize Darwin, and approach it from a so-called philosophical perspective, but ignore the overwhelming ground data (i.e. fossil record) that keeps being added to on a weekly and sometimes daily basis. In my view, none of this is necessary, as it's not a proper response to begin with, and it exposes our collective disinterest in the created world and the natural sciences, it burns potential bridges between Islam and non-Muslims, and it could sow seeds of doubts in the inquisitive minds of our own youth.
If you're ever writing a (childrens?) book on this topic, I'm buying it. What a balanced response to this subject! Thank you for taking the time to share your outlook on this topic.
