What real Idiots would try to beat a train/train crossing gates?!?! As a driver of Wisconsin I always come to a stop when I hear the railroad crossing bells ringing and see the crossing lights flashing red, but there are sometimes I begin to cross and they activate scaring me half to death and somewhat not knowing what to do, because I don’t know if they are just testing the signals or a train is coming my way. Like it happened to me once I was halfway across the railroad crossing and they started to activate, does that make me an idiot??
years ago, I saw 2 cars and a John Deere tractor race a train to a RR crossing. The train was 3 locomotives lashed together. No freight cars, just the locomotives. The engineer hit the brakes to keep from hitting the JD tractor. Then the 3 locos cleared the crossing afterwards in about 15 seconds. Just nutty.
My cousin used to drive a school bus. One time at the train station in his town, he saw the back end of the train and went across the tracks. The train was backing up. Luckily, there were no kids on the bus when the back end of the bus was hit at low speed.
When there is an intersection parallel to the rail crossing, the traffic lights should have a red light for right-turning traffic. In some clips, it appeared that cars had a green light in conflict with the flashing crossing lights. Some of those crossings clearly need gates!
If someone is so dumb they think a green light means it's okay to try to beat a train through a crossing, while the red lights at the crossing are flashing, they're beyond help.
@@jilljones3664 When a traffic light turns green, many people just go. They don't check to see if the cross traffic has stopped or to look for pedestrians or bicyclists - or trains. They just go.
@@Bobrogers99 Translation: When a light turns green YOU just start driving without paying any attention to what's going on around you. And if you happen to be sitting at a railroad crossing where the red lights are flashing you don't see any reason to look for a train or even acknowledge the flashing lights. Most people have enough sense NOT to do that, Bob. I'm thinking even a German Shepherd would have more sense than that.
Actually, as per Alabama law (at least), a flashing red light in any case means stop and proceed when clear. It's why you can proceed through a malfunctioning gateless crossing if you stop and make sure that there isn't a train coming first. This kind of confusion is why people don't know how to properly proceed at HAWK signals.
A flashing red traffic light is single and means stop and then proceed if clear. Railroad crossings are a different ball game; with them, you have PAIRS of flashing red lights that alternate in illumination. As long as those lights are flashing, drivers are to remain stopped behind that white line.
Here in Alabama, and many other places here in the US, you have flashing red beacons with two lights that alternate, such as this one: ua-cam.com/video/s8lbIcz_SEg/v-deo.html And then you also have HAWK signals, which feature two alternating red lights that are horizontally positioned (rather than vertically positioned) that alternate to let drivers know to stop and proceed when clear during the pedestrian clearance phase: ua-cam.com/video/COXVA9vCpro/v-deo.html So a flashing red light being in a pair that alternates doesn't really mean anything different, as I was told by the head of the City of Huntsville Traffic Engineering Department. Though as a flashing red light (or alternating pair of red lights) means "stop and proceed when clear/safe to do so", it's still pretty dumb (and downright dangerous) to proceed through an active crossing when a train is approaching, IMHO.
This happens in every country that has Railroad Crossings, if you check out the crossings in Mexico, any driver can outrun the red crossing lights, or even get stuck under the gate and snap it off. And also Railroad Crossing signals made in the U.S. and later installed in Mexico don't even last a decade in service, they eventually get vandalized.
freebrickproductions Seneca is REALLY BAD, about people blowing through the crossing, but, if you've only had 1 accident in the past 40 years, than these signals will stay for a while
The tracks go through the crossing at a somewhat sharp angle, and as such, the farthest signal in the shot is as close as NS could get to the tracks on that side.
One time we were going to my grandparents in Athens AL for some holiday and we went through Pratt Ave, A train was coming but my dad did not care and crossed the tracks when the train was at Cleveland Ave heading north. We were running late to Athens but I don’t care. My dad is one of those several examples of Crossing idiots…
@@carollewis3912 at least we don't do stupid stuff around railroad tracks like that. Going around a crossing arm is stupid not to mention going through when the arms are going down. We Yankees ( as you call us) knows that the trains are going faster than it appears. Those stupid southerners thinks that the trains should stop for them.
The deadliest combination - railroad crossing without crossing bars and traffic lights... They're waiting for green lights and then there comes a train...
Piloting a train has got to be a stressful job with all these Einsteins trying to run the crossing lights/bells. Even ambulances! People driving large vehicles seem to be the worst.
On gates, the light closest to the end of the gate is always solid red. So, passing a closed crossing gate is running two or more red lights (one per gate). Many crossings also have signs saying "do not pass closed gates" so thats failure to obey a sign as well. Add on reckless driving, and its clear that there are measures making these idiots break as many laws as possible.
+Douglas Harrislane Maybe at some quiet zine crossing, where they have wayside horns mounted opolws near the crossing, but I assure you that all of the train hrons you here in this come from the trains themselves.
If there was an award for "Worst Videography" and non-close calls, this would be an award contender. Otherwise, it's just the usual dopes driving, when the crossing lights and bell came on ; usually long before a train crawled by. I agree with other comments about dopes seeing green lights ahead, just past the tracks ; conflicting signals, or what ?
Most of these clips showed gates coming down way sooner than they needed to. And then when the train finally approaches you cut to the next clip. Who's the real idiot?
The FRA requires only a minimum of 20 seconds of activation time before a train reaches a crossing with the gates having lowered about 5 seconds before the train reaches the crossing, though most railroads aim for 25-30 seconds. And just because my editing in this video wasn't the best doesn't mean that the people who carelessly ignored the signals weren't idiots themselves.
Bad laws produce bad drivers. I read the disclaimer at the beginning. Permitting people to cross against the red invites people to take a risk. In the same way the "right turn on red" has caused me quite a few dangerous incidents in my visits to the US where cars are turning with the red and then when it goes green they don't want to stop for pedestrians. You can blame drivers all you please but if people don't have clear rules then it is hard to make them obey any.
Liam Bushrod there are plenty of crossings without lights in the U.K. I live in U.K. I have seen loads it’s just as bad here as it is in the USA saying that makes all Brits sound ignorant.
@@Chirpingcherub yeah but the ones without lights are user worked crossings and aren't on busy highways like these are. I know a fair amount about level crossings here in the UK and safety standards are objectively higher than in the US
Hey Liam, Alabama ain't the whole United States. Quite frankly those signals and a lot of them in this video are antiquated and shouldn't be even still be in service. Most of the country has what you see at 9:21. 12 inch lights instead of 8 inch, some are LED, gates and electronic bells. Crossing signal activation is controlled with integrated circuits allowing signals to activate in accordance with train speed. Obviously, railroad crossing safety is a low priority in Alabama but, for most of the US you're not going to find better grade crossing protection anywhere else in the world.
1:55 ok that Crossing is just an Accident waiting to happen only Flashing Lights but no Bell? I wouldn't be able to tell if a Train is coming or not unless I look at the Flashing Lights!
In the first 5 seconds after lights come on I don't think they are idiots for going through, it's better than locking up your brakes because you risk sliding right to the middle of the track and then you have to keep going anyway and could stall your engine. Obviously the people going after the gates came down are idiots though that is not arguable, as they obviously had time to stop. It's the same thing with yellow traffic lights.
I'm aware, but that doesn't change the fact that going through an active crossing that you had plenty of time to stop for is still very dangerous. However, it is part of the reason why I like that the signals in the UK and Ireland feature yellow lights that come on prior to the red lights coming on when a crossings activate.
Why do people think it’s okay to disobey warning signs for an oncoming train? They don’t realize they are putting not just themselves in danger, but also others at the crossing.
I always counted the Seconds from the time the person crosses the downed Gates until the train arrives at the crossing just to see how many seconds that person cheated death
Here is a message to ALL drivers who come across railroad tracks when the lights are flashing: Please, do NOT go across the railroad tracks when the lights are flashing, or gates are coming down. Wait for the train until it’s all done. I would suggest to NOT do this. Think of your car getting hit by a train when your on the tracks, you might die! Even if the crossing is just a cross buck (which is a railroad crossing with NO flashing red lights, NO bell, and NO railroad crossing gates), PLEASE stop if you hear a train coming. Even if the crossings don’t activate and there is a train coming, PLEASE don’t cross the tracks! Even if your a semi truck driver, DO NOT DO THIS! If the train is going super fast, too fast and it hits your semi, it might come off the tracks! Then you’ll have to pay more money to get the engines repaired! If your a car driver, semi truck driver, or any other vehicle driver that watched this video, PLEASE read all of this comment! If you don’t, your vehicle might get hit by a train, and you might die, too! #OperationLifesaver
A kit of those crossings needs some serious upgrades, with gates and traffic lites. They definitely should had them at the airport road crossing. A cantilever can only b stretched so far. They should install red light cameras, at some of these crossings.
Hours counter. Seconds from the time the person crosses the downed Gates until the train arrives at the crossing just to see how many seconds that person cheated death
This is why we have white lights in Belgium to show you when it's ok to cross and red when it's not ok. Red alone is not enough, it doesn't stand out, and the black background is too small here.
If there are gates, it's illegal to cross when the gates are down. If it isn't safe to crossing, it's also illegal. If you don't stop before proceeding at an active gateless crossing (and determine that you can safely cross), it's illegal. However, as defined by the Federal Highway Administration, a flashing red light in any instance here in the US means stop and then proceed when you can safely do so.
What if it's malfunctioning though? Or the train is stopped right next to the crossing but won't be proceeding through it? These are cases that happen, and theoretically, traffic shouldn't be held-up because of it.
I don't think you should risk it because your car could breakdown while crossing the tracks, or if you're walking or running you could trip over the rails
Not nearly a russian level of driving. Though for idiots in Russia we have automatic barrier obstavles, deployed from under the pavment in addition to usual barriers.
At 10:12. That car you claimed was an idiot was not. He approached the crossing close enough to safely pass as the gates were not going down at the time. If you expected that driver to stop it wouldn't make sense since you have to consider the driver's reaction time. The driver was well safe to cross. Therefore the driver was not an idiot.
Suggestions anyone Me: We put traffic Lights in front of the crossings and when they activate the Traffic Lights turn Blinking Red all The time the crossings activate...
The ITE basically stated the most traffic signals near a rail crossing have a track clearance green interval for a few seconds to clear traffic from the track on approach to the intersection. It’s funny how many people abuse the concept.
Suggestion Mtray from 5 years ago: think about how dumb drivers are in the state of Tennessee and others. Then think about how to prevent red light runners…

The engineer hit the brakes to keep from hitting the JD tractor. Then the 3 locos cleared the crossing afterwards in about 15 seconds. Just nutty.
+Raoul Cruz They probably thought that they would literally die if they waited at a crossing for any length of time...
have you ever climbed on to a cantilever and walked to the end? and is it on your bucket list?
No.
@@freebrickproductions do you hope to someday? like with permission of course.
My cousin used to drive a school bus. One time at the train station in his town, he saw the back end of the train and went across the tracks. The train was backing up. Luckily, there were no kids on the bus when the back end of the bus was hit at low speed.
Wow! I'm guessing everyone made it out alright, though I'm also guessing he didn't drive a school bus for much longer after that!
@@jilljones3664 I guess there must be a lot of German Shepherds driving, because this does happen.
My guy at 26:20 what is you doing almost got hit my guy
ONE flashing light means, "stop and proceed." TWO flashing lights on a pole with a crossbuck means "stop."
Once the gates were down and I saw a pedestrian walk around the gates. Right after that, a train whips through the crossing at maybe 60mph.
It baffles me that Pratt Ave does not have gates
A flashing red traffic light is single and means stop and then proceed if clear. Railroad crossings are a different ball game; with them, you have PAIRS of flashing red lights that alternate in illumination. As long as those lights are flashing, drivers are to remain stopped behind that white line.
Here in Alabama, and many other places here in the US, you have flashing red beacons with two lights that alternate, such as this one:
ua-cam.com/video/s8lbIcz_SEg/v-deo.html
And then you also have HAWK signals, which feature two alternating red lights that are horizontally positioned (rather than vertically positioned) that alternate to let drivers know to stop and proceed when clear during the pedestrian clearance phase:
ua-cam.com/video/COXVA9vCpro/v-deo.html
So a flashing red light being in a pair that alternates doesn't really mean anything different, as I was told by the head of the City of Huntsville Traffic Engineering Department. Though as a flashing red light (or alternating pair of red lights) means "stop and proceed when clear/safe to do so", it's still pretty dumb (and downright dangerous) to proceed through an active crossing when a train is approaching, IMHO.
did they ever fixed the Lilly flag road signal
I have yet to see if the replacement has been installed. I do not believe so though.
SAFETY FIRST NEVER IGNORE CROSSINGS
At 8:28, were those two traffic cops?
Parking enforcement, I believe, but essentially almost the same thing...
@29:45 toyata beeps at driver for stopping!!!
Main street in Leighton is basically Seneca Drive in Trinity, but Main St. has newer equipment
Yep. And also with different bases and minus a pair of lights.
***** right.
freebrickproductions Seneca is REALLY BAD, about people blowing through the crossing, but, if you've only had 1 accident in the past 40 years, than these signals will stay for a while
17:54 why are the gates so far away from the crossing... that makes no sense
The tracks go through the crossing at a somewhat sharp angle, and as such, the farthest signal in the shot is as close as NS could get to the tracks on that side.
15:29 what's with the red NS engine?
Also, Buffalo has a LOT of idiots that do this too!
Heritage Unit.
11:36.the lights are really hard to see.
Yea.
You have very aptly named the video.
Patience is a long lost virtue.
Using the broad paintbrush, why are most of them pickups?
Because this is the south and people drive pickup trucks because they think it makes them look "cool".
The great state of Alabama makes a very proud showing in these videos.
And shows how stupid they are too.
I do know the casket makers love those idiots. They are making a lot of money from those idiots families.
I'm sure yankee states do the same. Too bad they weren't signaled out.
@@Kathrynyoder-x2j The northern states do plenty of stupid stuff. Including racism.
Back in 2015, I saw a school bus run an ACTIVE, GATED railroad crossing. And a train was coming.
Okay.
Hey it sounds like you have the Casio CTK 4200 piano!
My friend might. I'd have to check.
these railroad crossing should have cameras at them to take picture of licence plates of drivers ignoring signals
No offense, but those drivers should receive doctorates in railroad safety disregard. They just aren't safety conscious.
Why so many in AL
Because I live there and railfan there the most.
there is no train coming The sound of the train whistle is a recording coming from a speaker under the flashing red lights
+Douglas Harrislane Maybe at some quiet zine crossing, where they have wayside horns mounted opolws near the crossing, but I assure you that all of the train hrons you here in this come from the trains themselves.
the train horns come from the trains not a speaker you know nothing about trains.
The bell of the crossing comes from a speaker because most of the bells are not mechanical.
Are you going to make a railroad crossing idiots of 2017?
Yes, later.
As a train driver this so absolutely, incredible stupid to cross railways when a train approaching
This is definitely the Louisville and Nashville. Note the L&N station and the road named L&N.
Actually, it's a mixture of SOU and L&N, with a few others thrown in, IIRC.
Wow. And I thought we had lots of misuse here in the UK!
Yea, people tend to ignore signals, pretty much anywhere, it seems.
I'm probably WAAAAAYYY late, but once the lights start, it is illegal to cross regardless if there are gates or not.
And just because my editing in this video wasn't the best doesn't mean that the people who carelessly ignored the signals weren't idiots themselves.
i dont remember a 4-track crossing
At which point?
freebrickproductions the beginning
I had recorded it last summer.
You can blame drivers all you please but if people don't have clear rules then it is hard to make them obey any.
how do you know when the trains are coming is there a website or Android app to tell you for Pennsylvania
Train horns in the distance, if I see a train coming up the tracks, or if there's an online scanner feed, then I'll also use that.
That really grinds my gears
i know exactly what that first song is, it is a default beat on a piano
7:58 the state of that crossing, you can't even see the lights! So glad I don't live in the US, that would not be acceptable here in the UK lol 😅
I know a fair amount about level crossings here in the UK and safety standards are objectively higher than in the US
Liam Bushrod that’s true I suppose the ones with no lights are usually in Scotland where the laws are completely different and on country roads
There is a bell there, but it was dead. It has since been replaced.
1:55 you can barely see the flashing lights
They should put up Cameras, like they have for catching people that go through Red Lights
Dang. That first crossings, them arms went down like a boss
so funny at 4:15 when the cars rushed while the traffic lights are green when the signal went off
The gateless signals, a car would stop when the train is here
What's the closest call you've witnessed at a crossing?
26:14
Remove the gates and you get rid of the idiot's in the world that have no common sense.
At least in the Netherlands, if you go over a railroad crossing when the lights are red, you can get a hefty fine.
19:34 it looks like a funnel cloud
i see with your friend, he said he allows to use the music on anything (videos, etc....)
city: *makes Flagg road*
people: *ignores the flag(g)*

In the first 5 seconds after lights come on I don't think they are idiots for going through, it's better than locking up your brakes because you risk sliding right to the middle of the track and then you have to keep going anyway and could stall your engine. Obviously the people going after the gates came down are idiots though that is not arguable, as they obviously had time to stop. It's the same thing with yellow traffic lights.
kdmq if you go the speed limit you wouldn’t have to worry about locking up your brakes or stopping short
Not everyone is going to slam on their brakes as soon as the lights flash.
I'm aware, but that doesn't change the fact that going through an active crossing that you had plenty of time to stop for is still very dangerous. However, it is part of the reason why I like that the signals in the UK and Ireland feature yellow lights that come on prior to the red lights coming on when a crossings activate.
But for many , green=go, red=stop, yellow= go faster.
Why do people think it’s okay to disobey warning signs for an oncoming train? They don’t realize they are putting not just themselves in danger, but also others at the crossing.
You cut the film too short,, I want to see time & distance..
I always counted the Seconds from the time the person crosses the downed Gates until the train arrives at the crossing just to see how many seconds that person cheated death
Here is a message to ALL drivers who come across railroad tracks when the lights are flashing:
Please, do NOT go across the railroad tracks when the lights are flashing, or gates are coming down.

At 19 minutes 56 seconds sounds like WRRS mini mechanical bell great video I hear a Wch ebell further in great compilation
22:53 Safetran E-Bell
A kit of those crossings needs some serious upgrades, with gates and traffic lites. They definitely should had them at the airport road crossing. A cantilever can only b stretched so far. They should install red light cameras, at some of these crossings.
1:31 That was the same Railraod idiot that i was talking about on Railraod Crossings 16
Hours counter. Seconds from the time the person crosses the downed Gates until the train arrives at the crossing just to see how many seconds that person cheated death
I hope they will get end up getting a citation
10:14 i wouldnt count that as an idiot wasnt much you could do with how little space there is to stop...
I've always wondered how people think they can beat the train
This is why we have white lights in Belgium to show you when it's ok to cross and red when it's not ok. Red alone is not enough, it doesn't stand out, and the black background is too small here.
It is really legal?
Yes.
What are they waiting for to illegalize it? Isn't there any crossings which you can be fined if you cross them while the lights are blinking?
If there are gates, it's illegal to cross when the gates are down. If it isn't safe to crossing, it's also illegal. If you don't stop before proceeding at an active gateless crossing (and determine that you can safely cross), it's illegal. However, as defined by the Federal Highway Administration, a flashing red light in any instance here in the US means stop and then proceed when you can safely do so.
In my opinion, it allways should be illegal to cross an active crossing
What if it's malfunctioning though? Or the train is stopped right next to the crossing but won't be proceeding through it? These are cases that happen, and theoretically, traffic shouldn't be held-up because of it.
But It is not clear because a train is coming.
Yea, but one could define "clear" as if you have enough time to safely cross...
I don't think you should risk it because your car could breakdown while crossing the tracks, or if you're walking or running you could trip over the rails
Not nearly a russian level of driving.
Though for idiots in Russia we have automatic barrier obstavles, deployed from under the pavment in addition to usual barriers.
we need these here in Murica.
The people that's driving must be blind and death cause I know y'all hear the bells and see. Them flashing lights
Some people gonna learn yet that trains no matter how fast or slow they are traveling are nothing to play with
I will never understand why some of my fellow humans have to be so sodding stupid. And that ambulance driver - I'm speechless.
Us mail got no time for damm train crossings
1:29 fake bells
They're pretty real, las I checked.
@@freebrickproductions Are you sure? I would check that intersection. Do you actually see metal bells there? They sound fake to me.
DO that in the UK and it';s a £60 fine and 3 points on your licence.
Britain is sooo more safety oriented and organized!
With most trains at kid-on-a-bike speed and sounding very far away it looks safe to cross. Illegal maybe, but safe.
+TarzanAndConz Many of these trains are traveling anywhere between 30 to 60 MPH.
At 25:30, a truck ran the gates on front of a cop!!!!
I'd say about 1/3 of these aren't really depicting idiots.
6:03 i didn't see an idiot. People just made it across before the gates came down.
Took a while until I found an idiot at 7:58
I didn't see an idiot at 8:23
At 10:00 most pedestrians are allowed to cross after a train has finished crossing prior to the gates rising.
Suggestions anyone
Me: We put traffic Lights in front of the crossings and when they activate the Traffic Lights turn Blinking Red all The time the crossings activate...
That really wouldn't change anything.
The ITE basically stated the most traffic signals near a rail crossing have a track clearance green interval for a few seconds to clear traffic from the track on approach to the intersection. It’s funny how many people abuse the concept.
Suggestion Mtray from 5 years ago:
think about how dumb drivers are in the state of Tennessee and others. Then think about how to prevent red light runners…
Collect all driving licenses immediately and do not return! Red means STOP 🛑! All over the world!
