From 2:00 onwards is the cut content of Oscar - where he aids you in the Forest & opposes you in the Kiln. It's not actually in the game, I imitated what it would be like through implementing cut audio & making phantoms seem as though they were really in my world as NPC's (PC magic)

Yeah I was just thinking about much more clear everything would have been with these kind of interactions... especially with him bringing up the two conflicting interests of Kingseeker Frampt and Darkstalker Kaathe
Too bad this was cut. I disagree with people saying it would ruin the "lost and dark" mood. The slow descent of a character that you may call a friend, because you are always besting him and taking the prophecy for yourself... until the point where he even turns against you after the final boss no matter what you choose... that's truly dark and bitter.
And it could have been a better fight than Gwyn. If he was just as good as you, the real Chosen Undead, just a little too slow to best you. He could at least have opposed you in the Dark Lord ending.
This. I felt like the developers made a mistake to exclude him. Sure, lonely journey faced with peerless adversaries and all but the idea that you are not alone and crushing that friendship in the end would've made the ending more 'dark.' Oscar's stats would scale on how strong you are and the trick to beating him would be outlasting him. After fighting gywn and his knights, FROM should've let oscar be somewhat a last attempt to off the player before beating the game. That would make a insane difficult level/game even harder. It would also help to score in some more lore, that humans are desperate for fire/purpose. After beating the gods, fighting Oscar is a hint that humanity will fight amongst themselves; a peak at humanity's ugly but pure nature.
Aznninja123 maybe make Oscar played by an invader and have his dialogue through entrance/win/lose cutscenes? And maybe if you lost the ending changed instead of just being resurrected by the darksign to fight him again?
I agree that it would have been far better but there is a lot of great cut content in the game. They were probably forced to rush it for a release deadline by he publisher or something similar.
I think the reason they cut it is because you can choose to not link the flame without talking to Kaathe therefore making some of the dialogue moot.
Yourson Isold After everyone says that this could've been the greatest thing that could happen, all I can think is how to make it cheesy, even though Dark Souls is obviously very dark. The best I can think of is making the final encounter like the last fight in Metal Gear Solid 4:

He will heal when you heal, be relatively fast in his armor, know at least one heavy pyromancy for splash damage, good defense, and be aggressive as all hell. A true battle that will show who really deserves the title, "Chosen Undead". Music choice is up to debate, I don't have an ear for that kind of opinion.
Maybe that's why Gwyn was so easy. Oscar was the REAL final boss.

***** His story line wasn't about questioning if you are the chosen undead, it was about his questioning his purpose in life and being upset about you being the chosen undead, which was a wonderful story line that they cut out.

So he went from the final boss, to someone who gets beaten by the easiest boss? Such a shame, I am in agreement that the cut content would have been an excellent addition to the game. However, it could have overshadowed Solaire, who is a beacon of hope in an otherwise untrustworthy world
souldude151 To be fair, he grows and gets stronger alongside you. At least, he would have. Besides, I like to think the Demon snuck up on him. After all, his gear was vastly superior to ours. Either that or he was too slow. He could prolly only manage a fat roll, since he prolly didn't have a Ring like Havel's.
EDIT: Dunno why I didn't say this at the time, but Oscar also probably weakened the Asylum Demon by a lot. I mean, it's near identical to the Stray Demon.
souldude151 There's no way the Asylum Demon is weaker than pinwheel. So, he didn't fell that hard.
Instead of overshadowing Solaire, he would've added to his character. If you save Solaire and accept that he is the one who rekindles the First Flame (like in Vaati's other video), then either Solaire, the (potential) firstborn of Gwyn, or Oscar, the Dark Lord (who we would've grown attached to and bonded with during the game), would have to die. If you choose the Dark ending, then Solaire and Oscar would team up to try and save the Light (potentially making for a cool 2v1 PvP style boss fight?). In any case, the conflict between the three possible Chosen Undeads would make an excellent story arc. Solaire's inherent goodness (light), Oscar's jealousy of the player's role as the true Chosen Undead (dark), and the player's own actions and decisions throughout the game (neutral/your choice) could add another dimension to the insane lore already present in this masterpiece of a game.

Darqfalls Yea I think you may be on to something about oscar weakening the demon. Why would the weakest one be the one on active duty? That wouldn't make much sense.
Damn... Guess it was really a mercy for Oscar to die right there in the Asylum. I always kinda wished that Oscar had survived and came with me, but now I think it was better for him to die there. I do wish they did include him, he would've made an AMAZING story mechanic.

Yeah, I feel bad now at the amazing potential of this storyline that they didn't include. Oscar shows a lot of character development in this, and it would have been a sad moment to finish off the friend that gave you the Estus Flask, the friend that freed you from the asylum so that you could begin your journey, the friend that realized that you were the chosen undead, you were more powerful and important than him, the friend that, in the end, saw you as a rival, a rival who had to be finished near the final battle.
At least we have the voice lines, and can play out what possibly would have happened.
Let's hope that From Software take out their fingers and make a good remake...in ten years or so...

They really should have gone with a remake instead of a cash grab "remaster" that didn't even fucking work at launch.
If this had happened it would have made the fact Oscar, or at least his armor, is essentially the cover character of the game a littlle more bittersweet.
Like he's the hero, but you took his purpose and now he has nothing but to oppose you. Kind of meta.
Its too bad it was left out because that would be a sort of somber, bitter final note to go out on that's in line with the overarching theme of contrast. If there's light, there must be dark etc.
If both are going for the same goal, and there can only be one, if you succeed that means the other "hero" will fail. The other doomed to settle with being your opposite no matter what.

Nyall Leary He didn't say that. The Elite Knight Set is essentially the Dark Souls posterchild, combined with a Crest Shield and Broadsword/Astora Straight Sword
Kiyosuki The Chosen Undead donned the armor of Oscar of Astora after agreeing to continue his quest, at least that's how I see it when I wear that set. I also wield the Greatsword of Artorias with similar motive.
Oscar can probably speak into the nest in Dark Souls 2 and get stuff from it because his voice is so silky smooth.

@@VERGILGASM Before it was cut all 3 of you were actually supposed to escape the asylum and take down the asylum demon together, although this just us assuming thanks to cut dialogue of both Solaire and Oscar that shows us that we were supposed to help them both get out of their jail cells, not sure how we were supposed to get out in the first place though if Oscar was also still imprisoned.

I remember the first time i played this game, just wandering about and then i found him on the floor and "hey i wonder if i can kill him?"

I did that too but by mistake. He died and I just put the controller down and turned off the game. I actually felt terrible for killing him and I'd only just met him. I think if they'd kept his story line it would have been better and as a result really made the ending good. The fight at the end is meh. To have Oscar suddenly arrive and challenge you to a fight to the death. Oh man what a twist. T_T

I just realized part of why I love dark souls characters, every one is driven by some foolish quest that ends in their demise. Oscar to feel important, Siegmeyer to feel worthwhile, Solaire to find his sun. Oscar is the best example of this, in that he probably had a pretty good life in Astora, but went out of his way to become branded with the darksign, just so he could go fulfill his prophecy.
I can notice the patterns in Dark Souls III as well now :O
NONE of their quests were foolish, It isn't foolish to have a goal, something to strive for, even if it is for a selfish reason or reasons.
Any reason to us is good if it keeps up from hollowing. If you were in this world you definitely would do anything to not hollow
I'm kind of glad he dies with 'peace' in the beginning. After watching this I can't help, but feel sympathy and sadness for the poor guy, trying to become something all his life and wanting fate to judge him instead of choosing his own way. In the end engulfed by jealousy and other emotions towards the Chosen One because he became something he wished he too could become. Only to die, empty and unfulfilled by your hands.
Shit is grim, man. Sometimes I wish Dark Souls wasn't so 'dark', every character you meet is pretty much damned in their own way it's sad. ;(
I'm from the future and still feel Dark Souls is one of the darkest game.All of those efforts of Oscar end with nothing.

I wouldn't think of him as a final boss, rather as an impactful piece of story after the climactic fight with Gwyn. Although you have to admit, that sort of blatant story doesn't really fit with the Souls theme!
Sorry to bring this up again but, was this a theory you had or cut content from the game? I'm rather confused. There seems to be actual voice acting from Oscar's VA?

I would love to see just a well-done short movie of Oscar fighting the Asylum Demon and being smashed through the roof. It's such a sad/epic image.
Well I can try:
Oscar's sole purpose was to help fulfilling the Undead Prophecy, to release Undead from the Asylum. As he drops the Hollow with the key to your cell, he makes his way to the next, only to find Hollows. He searches for any other Undead, only to find the Asylum Demon, It flies up to fight him. It's safe to say that the Asylum Demon was as strong as the Stray Demon before Oscar fought it, they both share similar features and methods of attack. Of course Oscar wasn't phased by the demon, it looked weak and easy for a Knight of his caliber to defeat, but Oscar underestimated the beast, and the weakness of the roof below him. Oscar barely dodges the first few attacks and manages to strike and weaken the Asylum demon, He jumps on it's back and proceeds to fight with impunity, but he is shoved off and forced to fight in conventional combat. After minutes of fighting, Oscar is struck by the stock of the Hammer, and then shoved into the room you find him in. Broken back, ribs, injured arms and legs, he can barely move, but he meets the Chosen Undead, equipped and ready to engage the Hollows around him, He saved you, now you will return the favor. He enlightens the Chosen Undead on the Undead Prophecy, and as a final request he only asks to be left alone, to Hollow.
If you can picture it, imagine Oscar slaying hordes of Hollows around him, just to get to the Undead within the Asylum. Now frail and weak, unable to move, let alone defend himself, can you imagine how he feels? A brave, Elite Knight of Astora, no longer able to hold his own, his pride must be more shattered than his bones.
It is unknown what happened next, there is a large lapse of time now, where nothing is going on in the Asylum.
Few Undead escape their Cells, fewer make it past the demons. Demons guard the exit, thin floors separate the demons.
It is unknown why an Undead would return to the Asylum, maybe he wants to see what changed, maybe it was an accident, or maybe...Just maybe, he wanted to rescue Oscar. But darker times have come to the Asylum, Black Knights roam, hunting the Chosen Undead. If you can think about what happens next, you find a Black Knight not far from Oscar, a perhaps healthy, or Hollow Undead so you can think about what happens next. When we find him next, he is turned away from the open cell, he senses the presence of The Chosen Undead, and prepares for what's next. The Chosen Undead walks in, wearing Oscar's armor, and wielding his sword, Oscar see's his successor, he hesitantly raises his sword as does the Chosen Undead. Perhaps Oscar wasn't hollow, he was sensible and reasoned, but pride would not permit him not to fight the Chosen Undead. The battle ensues, Oscar fights valiantly using all his skill and determination to fight the Chosen Undead. Alas, he fails Oscar's attack is parried, and the Chosen Undead impales him with his sword.
This is the end of Oscar of Astora, in his final moments, he looks upon the Chosen Undead and sees a mirror image of himself, and one who was destined to succeed where he had failed, and he knew, his death was not in vain.
Reading that gives me a cowboy bebop feel...

i wanna know how Oscar lost to the asylum demon when he was so weak and Oscar is actually not to weak, he does more damage and has better than defense than the asylum demon and he gas estus so HOW??
imagine this. Oscar would survive. you two meet at firelink. You go up and he goes down. you both ring one of the bells. he meets you at sens. he acts like a npc summon and helps you through anor londo. you take on one of the two( fatty and fuck boy) he takes the other. he deals with 2 of the Lord souls. you deal with the other two. you both place the souls in the Lord vessel. he helps you face gwyn. and you know what happens next. you choose one ending. he wants the other. a final duel with the man you've had help you through the game. the last scene its you standing over his body. as you either burn up and rekindle the flame. Or you leave him there, and let the age of fire end. the game would be alot easier, but slightly better in my opinion

Saden Warner A bit late to reply but I somehow soloed them with a heavy strength build by utilizing the Havel's poise and damage of the crystal halberd + magic weapon on my first time playing the game (after like 40 tries).
+TheStudentGuy Well, it's not that hard. Hell, saw a guy beat that boss fight half naked with Zwei using MIC controls. As in, he was using his voice to play and beat the game.

Kills the mood of the final moment of thr game. After beating and epic boss like gwynn, the one thing to follow it up and end the game would be an npc that moves like a player that can easily br stunlocked, parried, backstabbed, etc..
Out of interest, what do you think about this theory?
The Player is just a normal person, but Oscar (for whatever reason) was trying to escape the Undead Asylum with a partner, who happens to be whatever class the Player chose.
On the roof top, the partner was killed by the Asylum Demon, his weapon, shield and catalyst were scattered and fell through different holes.
Realizing that Oscar needed a partner to finish the demon off, he needed a new partner and he found the Player, dropping his old partner's body down there (thus giving the player some armour or clothes) as well as a key, which could supposedly open any cell, but the Player simply opened their cell.
Then, we find the old partner's equipment, but while Oscar was waiting for you, he was ultimately wounded and unable to continue, and there he gives you the final means of escaping which he was saving for himself previously.

It's amazing how much this game continues to fascinate me. Probably my all time favorite. On a side note the music vaguely reminded me of Twin Peaks for some reason O.o
Agreed! I was hooked to the actual gameplay/exploration/pvp of dark souls for about the first year after its release, then I started getting into exploring the unbelievable lore accompanying these games (demon's/dark). It really is fascinating. Almost like a modern-day canterbury tales. I love how it is hidden and really takes some work to discover all of these wonderful stories, but at the same time it's disappointing that these mysteries are so often overlooked by the majority of players.

I don't think they ran out of time to include this, It seems more like a creative decision to keep the lonely feeling of the game, plus from his dialogue it seems like he was a bit too helpful in contrast to how the game currently is.
I also think that time wasn't the problem here.
What I see as the biggest problem, is how it would be possible to include oscar right after you kill gwyn.
Killing gwyn for the first time sets a heavy mood, and if oscar suddenly comes in, which would probably be a quite easy fight, the mood would just be shattered.

The point is that Gwyn is what the game has been building up to.
The music, his hollow appearance, the fact that he is not a big bad boss, but just a hollow old man.
Those all set a heavy mood, which would be ruined if after that an npc would come in, who you could probably kill easily by backstab fishing.
And the fact that gwyn is parryable is also a mistake.
On my first playthrough I didn't know you could parry him, so I had this epic fight with an incredibly aggressive boss, which resembled the tension you feel while fighting Manus.
Erik Cobra you mean that mood where you scream in joy and throw your controller out of your window at 60kmph because youve tried killing Gwyn for over 5 hours straight, yes i had trouble with him and ashlake and the area before -____-

When I killed him I didn´t even feel satisfaction.
I felt like I just put a sad old man who had lost everything out of his misery.
Woaw, it's a big twist they cut here. It would have been dramatic to have him help you, then fight you. But it's maybe better like it is now. I think they should release smthing about him, his story is very heavy 'cause he seemed to have much more ambition than the player, so him discovering he's not the chosen is a straight punch in the guts.

I don't think we should stay on the fact that he didn't use the estus flasks because:
1) Dev decided probably last minute that he would die at the beginning, so they couldn't find a totally ok way to make him die without making him already dead when the player arrives, it's more dramatic to make him say his last words to you than placing an empty body for this.
2)Maybe flasks were actually empty, because he was fighting the asylum demon on the roof so he might had used them before, but then devs found out that giving empty flasks to the player here was too brutal or not proper to game basic mechanics learning. So the player is given filled flasks.

+Dryon If I may also add, as far as I am aware, Estus doesn't reverse Hollowing. And as he is so close to hollowing, he didn't see the need to waste precious Estus on himself, and instead gave it to Chosen Undead, hoping with his last breath that the CD will keep the torch lit.
Currently doing an Oscar playthrough. Headcannoning that he is the one who made it out and the knight I started the game with was the one to free him from the cell. Takes some fluff obviously, but I just made it to Anor Londo with him.
How are you doing that, if this entire storyline is cut from the game exactly?
I swapped the role of Oscar and the Chosen Undead. I pretended the Chosen Undead died in the prison while freeing me, Oscar, from my cell.

I'm just wearing the Brass Armor to honor the Fire Keeper at Anor Londo. I feel so terrible whenever I kill a friendly NPC in Dark Souls, but as it's my first playthrough I want to get as many good items as I can. Planning on going to NG+ and being nice to everyone after this....

Dude, this was awesome. I'd like to say that this channel has made me understand what Dark Souls really stands for. When i started, it was just a hard game with good combat mechanics where i died alot. I couldn't understand the NPCs story. But you! You've shinned light on all the dark areas. THank you sooo much.

Most of the information given in Vaati's videos is not made up, it's taken from item description, NPC dialogue and files hidden away within the games code, it's how a lot of information can be discovered.

Your stupidity is beyond measure. Most of the the lore is very accurate and on some things its pure speculation as that's all we can do. I am going to assume you know nothing of computers nor programming and that there is things either left out of the game or removed for certain reasons. These things are what is used to complete such things as lore. For instance Shiva the East killing you and you invading him in a similar fashion to Lautrec. This was removed but none the less was in the original game. Are you going to tell me i am lying because its not in the actual game?
***** I disagree a lot of Vaati content is backed up and the speculation is, usually on the feelings of the characters and the history that is never explained, based on evidence that is already given. As with many things, the content in dark souls can, and is meant too, be interpreted. People have the right to fill in the gaps with speculation based on fact especially with a game like dark souls that forces you to draw the lines yourself. Vaati does a very fine job at doing all these things. :D

Imagine fighting your way through this harrowing, dangerous world full of powerful enemies, but this time you're not alone. You have a friend by your side, someone to pick you up when you fall, someone you can depend on. Chances are you would come to care about Oscar, more so than any other NPC in the game.
Then, at the very end, your steadfast ally and best friend turns on you out of jealousy and you're forced to kill him. It would be unspeakably heartbreaking and cruel for the game to make you kill Oscar after everything you've been through. So on your next playthrough, you would either be forced to relive that horrible experience all over again, or you would kill your most useful ally early on in the game to spare him from his fate. It would make an already brutal experience practically unbearable.
Dark Souls already has enough heartbreak and sadness as it is. This would have been pure overkill.

This is so sad, Dark Souls is a masterpiece but I can't even imagine how better it could have been with Oscar included as a true character evolving in this world at the same time as you. bonding with him.
I knew something wasn't normal with this character after finishing the game. We happen to know nothing about him throughout the game as though he's THE character to free us from our cell.

I asked myself why Oscar did hollow there, I mean he has hopes for us, he saved us, why giving up now?
Then again we don´t know what dying - again - is like and we also dont know how many times Oscar did die already.
There is this old trailer where we see Oscar - probably - and someone like Tarkus at firelink shrine, Oscar leaves with a gesture of hope, rising his fist.
If thats true, Oscar was there and tried to fulfill the prophecy himself, but he couldnt. Maybe he died like 100 times there and after all that he decided to go (back?) to the undead asylum and find someone, who could do what he couldnt, or maybe he rather was searching for company on that undead prophecy thing quest.
Maybe they were not like lone wolves back then in firelink shrine, maybe they were like friends. But they all failed, over and over again, so they departed, to each another way.
When I imagine that trailer scene with Oscar leaving firelink again, it could be that he then was leaving to the Asylum, while Tarkus was pushing his luck at Sens Fortress and the crestfallen warrior was left behind at firelink.
Back to Oscar: He somehow got the key to our cell, but how? Did he ... pick it from the asylum demon while it slept? I dont think so. Oscar threw a hollowed corpse into our cell which holds the key, but how come? Why did he not simply drop the key and who was that corpse anyway?
An undead prison guard? Cant believe it, they wouldnt entrust an undead with the key to the cells of other undead and wouldnt entrust anything to a mere hollow.
That corpse may have been another friend or compagnion of Oscar, who helped him take the key from the demon, and while it doesnt really appear that way, Oscar might have wanted to honour his now hollow, dead helper by letting him give over that key he gave his life for, so that he wouldnt be forgotten, and as you can see, if that was Oscars intention, it worked out, I remember.
Who knows what happend exactly at the roof, we dont hear that much noise, the asylum demon couldve surprised Oscar from behind and smashed him through the roof and the hell, this demon is pretty strong and his hammer hurts.
Oscar might not be strong in flesh anymore but he´s strong at heart, a real knight and probably the most honourable charakter in the entire game, to me at least.
In short: I believe what waaacrazy says is true, he wanted to pass on the torch, but I dont think he did so because he gave up on himself. Its rather that this was the purpose he chose for himself in the end, maybe he couldve been saved or even save himself when lying down, about to hollow, he had the flasks, he had a reason to hope, he had you who couldve helped him, but he didnt.
And in the end its probably just like he wanted: We remember him, we think of him and he´s become very important to us in different ways.
Oh Oscar, I cry tears for the time we could not spend together, but I also have joy in my heart thinking of how you went out of this world with hope and peace in your heart, you did your part, whatever will be isn´t yours to worry about, farewell.

Wow this would have been amazing, Most if not all of the NPCs in Dark Souls meet an unhappy end. This could have been a great emotional side story.

If it weren't for Oscar's help, you and/or countless other undead would never have made it out of the Asylum.
I think the tragedy of his (cut) story is that he doesn't realize how substantial a part he already contributed, maybe also blinded by his Heritage, seeing as the House of Astora is specifically bred to fulfill the prophecy, his pride forbid him to be a mere background mover.
While deep down he knew he is not the chose one, his refusal to abide to this destiny kept him sane and human. Isn't Hollowing after all simply the acceptance of one's fate, the lack of power to keep writhing and wriggling in the clutches of powers beyond your control?
I recently showed a few friends Dark Souls, out of 4 friends I showed, 3 of them mashed X as fast as they could when meeting Oscar, then ran away as soon as they got the flask, and the 4th attacked him. My friends are stupid and don't know how to enjoy games lol. I don't like backseat gaming or I would have told them to slow down and listen.
With that attitude they probably took a one-way trip down into New Londo or got spawn-camped by the Crestfallen, didn't they.
This makes we really want a dark souls remake with the cut content implemented. Great video.

+CZProtton DSCM does this? I only use it to directly connect to my friend without waiting for the summon sign for 10 minutes. Is there a fast way to connect with a random phantom without camping for someone's sign?
Pewtis You have to wait for someone to drop a sign, but you can be connected to 32 nodes and fast which means you can get a lot of people in your net.

Would I have liked to see this in the original game? Yes, of course. But I think the reason we all do is because Oscar’s storyline was cut in the first place. It makes it that much more impactful. Thanks to the files still in the game’s code, we know what could’ve been. And Oscar’s death hits that much harder when you know what could’ve happened.
Love it. Oscar is one of not the most loved character in my eyes. Even though I haven’t fully finished the game yet, I had a feeling Oscar had a more important role than the character who frees you and then dies. He will always be just as important as the main character for without him we would be nothing. .
While I'm suffering from a rather deep depression the line "A search for purpose is all that he has" really got to me.

I think it would have made the story too explicitly self-aware and taken away the gaps that the dedicated player base basically filled in themselves. The story is beautiful if you’re willing to pay attention to it; it’s also beautiful in that it isn’t thrown in your face the entire time, like a Red Dead Redemption, or a God of War.

Wait....what if we all go hollow? Like....IRL. What if we only gave it another name? Instead of "going hollow" we called it "growing up". Think about it. You have all the hopes and dreams when youre young. You have all the energy in the world. You think you can change whatever you wish to change. But then....slowly....you loose all that until you are adult. When you reached that age, you slowly start losing your mind until you constantly complain about everything, including stuff you yourself have done or have been (some would call such things madness). If you live through that, then its just so your brain and body can slowly give up on you until you get sick and die. Then there is no coming back. Makes sense. Kinda. Not really. But its a funny thought, isnt it? :)

Ironically enough, in dying he finds the final purpose of setting in motion the chosen undead's quest, basically being responsible for the entire events of the game as the video says, not so fateless afterall, I reckon he dies with more peace in his heart than if he lives and duels you.

We're perfectly happy to set off with a quest to ring the bells fixed firmly in our minds, but Oscar doesn't know that the Chosen Undead can even GET to Lordran. He just rescues some dude and asks him to please do something.
Think about if you were Oscar. You would be making a last-ditch effort to pawn your job off on some schmuck who'd been sitting in a prison for centuries. Would you seriously think that the guy is going to fulfill your request?
Now think about if you were the Chosen Undead. All you want is a way out of this fucking Asylum, and by god you're going to find one. One day, this guy rescues you. You're grateful, and agree to ring his bell so that the guy can die in peace.
Be honest here. Would you, as the person you are now, seriously seek out the land of the ancient Lords to ring a bell for no reason other than to appease some poor fucker's Hollowed corpse? I wouldn't. How the hell would someone even get to Lordran? It's on the top of a giant tree, for fuck's sake. It's only pure happenstance that the Chosen Undead got to Lordran, in all honesty.
