I definitely think there’s something to looking at the backlog and utilizing the gold mine we already have. The steamdeck has offered a way to play all the gems of yesteryear, whether through sales or emulation. My latest three games played were from 2010, 2008, and 2001. There’s so much out there and it’s incredibly accessible. Console gaming, game services, and keeping up with every new release seems less and less necessary the older I get. (Also 34.)
Same age and very much agree with everything you said. In addition to the backlog I've also been going back and re beating games I really enjoy. I was trying to keep up with all the new releases but I never find myself stopping to enjoy them. I'd just rush through them to get to the next game. Plan on being more selective in the future with new releases and taking my time with them. Definitely much harder to keep up with everything the older I get, gotta just learn to be selective and just enjoy what I love.
I am only sticking with Nintendo here on out. I’m not even supporting the third parties who support Nintendo. I’m just supporting Nintendo 1st party exclusively. They have never burned me in any kind of way. Every time I buy a Nintendo 1st party game I always have a giant smile on my face and the moment I complete their games, I feel like I’ve just spent a month in heaven. Nintendo does a great job in avoiding the overall dysfunction that everyone else is going through in the industry, and for that, I am Extremely happy with them.

I think the industry is facing a shift this year for sure. I look at upcoming releases and I’m like…. “Nah”. Like 98% of the releases aren’t interesting to me. Everything is cyclical, it’ll come back. But I’m sitting this one out on most titles right now. So I’m mainly playing older games or games I missed on the steam deck. Playing mass effect trilogy right now… awesome on the steam deck. Runs great, looks better than ever. Having a blast!
I'm in the same boat, the only new games that look interesting to me in Indiana Jones and a remaster/remake of paper Mario the thousand year door. But I have been loving playing older Mario or PC games on my steam deck
AAA gaming has already been ruined though many times over starting with price hikes then microtransactions and now the advent of AAAA gaming my advice to people is save your money and wait till honest reviews come out for any game
I just bought an old PS3 which plays PS2 and 1 games, so happy with it. I have started playing through GTA IV from fresh again, its so nice to just take a dip into the past. And its amazing how well these old games hold up. You soon get over the low framerate and resolution and just start enjoying the game for what it is, and with the PS5 and this old PS3 I can now play pretty much all the games I loved growing up
im happy with my steam deck oled and my nintendo switch. I found my parents original nes and snes in great condition, im going to order new cords for both and test them to see if they work. going to be building my snes and nes collection.
You could get an everdrive for those systems and load roms onto original hardware and still get the original experience. I have a few different everdrives and they are pretty great.
If I recall correctly @PSReady has mentioned and I have seen that you could buy games back during the PS3 and Vita days that just needed one purchase to have both versions. Hopefully Sony brings back that program if/when they bring out a full portable handheld.
Let us also hope that Sony / PlayStation does not bring back the overpriced, proprietary memory cards. I would like them to take a page from Nintendo, Valve, and smartphone manufacturers from back in the day of including microSD card storage. This is especially apparent now with cards that are up to 1.5 terabytes.
The steam deck is such an emulation beast, been replaying and discovering old ps2 games that cannot be taken from me. Games preserved for us to enjoy 20 years later that they won’t or can’t remake. For example initial d was Japanese only and I never got to experience, gran turismo 4 upscaled and crispy. I encourage anyone to enjoy what’s been preserved and that we will preserve them ourselves
This is so true. Especially since I’m pretty much waiting till the switch 2 comes out before I buy any new games. I’ll be spending this year playing older games I’ve never played before like final fantasy 7 and persona
The issue with Sony is more on the PC side, in countries that don't have access to PSN. A publisher shutting down studios has been par for the course as the market contracts. I just think the issues are amplified due to the internet allowing for every industry to have its own form of 24/7 news cycle and the outrage culture that helps facilitate clicks and views
There are some amazing games that are “older” but only now run well, look amazing and have great updates that make them complete experiences, all usually discounted, backlog gaming is the best!
I love the Majora's Mask manga. Since I don't always have time to replay the game, reading the manga is a perfect replacement to re-experience the story for me.
There are so many games from the last gen i didnt get round to that the steam deck gives me time for. New AAA games dont interest me anymore, give me games like Hades 2, pizza tower or hell divers 2!
Game Pass (or Microsoft) needs to put Call of Duty into Game Pass and make it attractive. Call of Duty players have no problem putting down $70 - $80 for every new game that comes out. I'm willing to bet that if Call of Duty was injected in to Game Pass, make the newest Call of Duty available on day one and open up all the maps... you will get a ton of subscribers. Add to that, every Call of Duty since time began be included in Game Pass. And reward Game Pass subscribers with weapons or loot... whatever it's called for every month they keep their subscription uninterrupted. I'm willing to bet that would get a ton of new subscribers.

Something that’s not noticed with Game Pass are the great sales they have it’s not Steam by any means but pretty good nonetheless. Got some good stuff like Bioshock 1&2 remastered, DMC 1-4, Lost Planet 1-3, Tomb Raider survival collection… I’ve been more encouraged to build a digital library now.
I already don’t look at new upcoming games since 2021, I grew up with my Dominican friends and we used to play the one cartridge Mario 64 for a year because we were low on money, I believe we do have to start playing our library, now i have over 1000 physical tittles on my shelf that I might never finish playing them all. Most of us are at a point where we can't keep up with the games we buy anyway, so it's not all grim. This is an opportunity to save money and time!

ROG Ally 2 being unveiled today, biggest thing i hope they improve is the battery life.
