I usually don't like to put down other peoples martial arts, but you claim to be a "Bagua Master" and yet your baguazhang is about as authentic and good as someone who has practiced only a few weeks. Very poor. please stop calling yourself a master, you are making yourself look silly.
Two things are obvious: 1. You have had no authentic bagua training. 2. You are trying to force MMA applications on these bagua-like movements you've invented. Don't even try to argue - not one technique is even remotely correct, and I mean from either a bagua's OR wrestling perspective.
so far, i enjoy and practise everything he has taught that has to do with bagua, and i think that everything he has taught is professional. please post as much bagua as you can. i love the forms, and especially the blocks and attacks. i would like to see more factoring in fighting into the movements though.
There are several kinds of Bagua and Taiji, traditionally both have been used by guards of various types. Both are extremely effective, but taijiquan has been heavily modified by WJQ and YCF about a century ago into a much less effective style, while bagua remains rather effective. Clearly Sun style taijiquan, created by Sun Lutang (a baguazhang master) has the advantage.
Josh Young depends on where you are learning tai chi in a martial arts school or at the local rec center. I've been studying it for two years and I just started learning ba gua. I prefer tai chi.
I've enjoyed mostly taijiquan for almost a decade. However the form I got seemed to lack some challenge and I supplemented it with capoeria and some other stuff.
Josh Young The school I study at teaches different tai chi forms with each level not to mention other small forms in many kung fu disciplines. So far, just listing tai chi forms, I've learned the simplest first, Universal, then I learned a form called Sandak, then Sun, and right now I'm working on Yang. Along the way I've had to learn Mabu Kuen, Sil lum dao, Jop sil, Wing Chun, and Ba Gua to name a few. And with each level I learn another breathing exercise so I can improve my qi gong. I just really really enjoy tai chi. Capoeria is also pretty cool. I've always admired that but I know I can't easily get into that. I'm working on getting more in shape and tai chi is something I can do at my physical level.
I'm currently just studying the basics of Bagua....and from what I learned from my Sifu, this internal art is all opened palm. Secondly, while doing lots of twisting, both feet are suppose to be planted on the floor so you can feel all the energy build up and store.
A couple of thoughts. I like in this video that you show sections of a form followed by the techinque, and also how you go slow so that everyone gets a chance to see what you are doing. I like how some of your technique sets video's are a quick reference to some of your more detailed videos of the same techniques. As for the critics, I would note that there are many styles of Bagua, just as with any martial art, and having said that, in Jakes style, this is how he does Bagua.
Sounds good Brian! Thanks! I may be going this Fall in a couple months and if I do I look for some Mantis and we are going to film a lot of videos from famous and historical sites in China!
THIS MAN IS A FAKE
It does! Tai Chi is Chinese Self Defense and pre-dates Karate by hundreds of years! All Chinese Martial Arts were the inspiration for the Japanese Martial Arts! :)
Hello, as a martial artist I just want to tell you that you still don't get it. You practice the form, but I don't see any real understanding of internal kung fu on what you are doing. Hope one day you will find it
Yeah, I agree to some extent, He does a lot of unnecessary combos when he can do a throw, as he demonstrates this at 2:25 and 1:10, but I see alot of other stuff That I do in wrestling, and is effective in scramble
What, I can't hear you because I'm too busy practicing, sweating, getting stronger, getting better, and loving it! Go enjoy life my friend! I'm not worth it! It's sad that posting your comments on my videos is how you spend your time! Cheers!
Also to followup what I just said, offering negative comments to Jakes technique isn't going to make him consider all you critic's views on what he is doing. Offer CONSTRUCTIVE critiques that are positive that mentions what he does RIGHT, how he could do better, and not focus just on everything you guys see as wrong. Anyway, great video, very practical stuff, thanks for taking the time to make this video, and keep up the good work Jake. If you ever go China again, study some southern mantis!
Interesting. Thanks. Just a question, or maybe it's a suggestion, or, just if it was me, something I would explore. On the first part, "Swimming," it seems to be primarily upper body. I wonder what type of applications you might discover if you moved in to take your opponent's center/stance using your own stance at the same time.
A lot of the moves we show are contained within Jeet Kune Do. But, I know what you mean! We'll put one together! Although, Jeet Kune Do is more of a philosophy of Martial Arts, teaching the practitioner to use any tactic that works!
That's great! Thanks for the comment and you have now been deleted and blocked!!! Hope you enjoy watching and learning from our future video lesson! Hope you learn what Kung Fu is all about! :)
Ba Gua fighting is all about throws, takedowns, joint locks, submission, and neutralization and redirection of your opponents strength! Keep practicing my friend!!!
i was wondering if you could make a sparring video of ba gua. I have been watching a lot of your videos and wanted to see a natural fighting implication where the movements flow. thank, big fan
That's true! That is why there are hundreds more techniques (and 7 more in this video) if one opponent does not let a move in then you change it up and transition!
I just posted a new Ba Gua lesson! And, I have dozens more coming out this month! If you like it, then watch and learn! If you don't then don't watch! Ba Gua fighting is all about throws, takedowns, joint locks, submission, and neutralization and redirection of your opponents strength! Keep practicing my friend!!!
Good lord... You really shouldn't call this made up stuff Bagua, its just not... at all! Nor is it internal, at all. Your stepping is way too loose yer gonna catch a knee to the nuts. Too many issues to even get into it. Good for you for training and studying, but be humble, study in earnest, practice to develop, not show off or make money.
how ca you teach or claim rel wen u have not studied baqua intimately enough to do so ? ijs what lineage of baqua are u in and who was your sifu? @ jake mace
Why you practice the circle walk? When you combat you are in the same position of the other combat style! In the world there are soo much fake master of bagua. Bagua is only 1 the imperial bagua the other style are born from pepople that see some master and tryed to copy her move. I'm very sad for this style because there so much people like you that make bad advertising. In you i see soo much kung-fu but very very little bagua.
My Kung Fu teacher taught me that Kung Fu is not about fancy forms or how authentic it is. Take the basics as a starting point and continue to learn, grow, and discover new ways of moving. That is the only way progress can be made. Grand Master Yip Man is a good example of that (for those who are familiar with his story) And look at Bruce Lee. He is arguably the greatest martial artist of our time. And he made his own martial art based on his past knowledge in wing chun karate etc. Kung Fu is Kung Fu.
Those interested in learning real bagua zhang fighting techniques should look elsewhere. There is nothing "internal" about this guy's teaching. Search for Hung I Hsiang, Hsu Hung Chi, Wang Shu Jin, Li Zi Ming, or Yin Fu and you will find the "Real Ba Gua Zhang"
The essence of Ba Gua is to avoid, strike and move so grappling with an opponent merely gives one of your (multiple) attackers to hit you while you are so engaged...
Of course! The fighting applications that are taken from the Chinese Kung Fu "Kata" or Tao Lu are a reflection of the practitioner, in this case me! They are a reflection of my experience and my energy! And they work great for me and many of my students!
I agree! These are only 8 moves against certain attacks! There are other fighting applications from Ba Gua and the other styles of Kung Fu that we train to defend against wrestlers both Freestyle and Greco Roman! Freestyle, Collegiate, and Greco Roman Wrestling are my other "loves" in addition to Kung Fu! That's all I did from age 12 to 21!
I started getting cauliflower ear when I was 19 from wrestling and grappling, but I was always very good about wearing headgear during practice (even though it's a pain)! My Mom says that I'm the only one in our family with the hump on my nose from it being cracked so many times! And, there is the scar on my right arm! Go check out the "Perfect Horse Stance" video on our channel and you'll see my scar that was from having my arm broken during a match! 16 screws and 2 plates and 2 surgeries!
I don't know very much of bagua. But I can't understand how you can have a solid structure with your lumbar region so much arched. I understand that there are many ways to do martial arts, but I don't think that this is the case, I suppose that ba gua (like most of the chinese martial arts, and even more the internal styles) needs a VERY solid structure. How can you express the force of your legs, or afford a very vigorous push, with that? I can't understand, so if I made a mistake please let me know how it is possible!
Learned most of these moves when I was in high school wrestling, minus the frivolous extra movements thrown in for show. Just gonna guess it's not authentic Ba Gua.
Dear ShaolinCenter, I hope you have time for a random stranger's question. What advice do you have for speed and timing? Simply saying "practice" opens a flood of options. Are there exercises you could recommend? Ba Gua seems a reactive-counter system of techniques - implying an importance of rhythm and speed greater than one's own opponent. Though I appreciate Jake's enthusiasm for self-marketing, this is pretty bad stuff. I am familiar with his Shaolin-Do Temple -Style Pa Kua (or Ba Gua). His emulation of the form is pretty mediocre ... and his "utility" of the movements is even worse. Maybe, though, he'll be discovered as a "male model" someday.
Very interesting! I always find Bagua palm to be interesting anx yet I have little idea how it works. The Shifu certainly have much insight to the art.
I really like the kata or form presentation of the movements followed by your interpretation on another person. Yahk Soak Deta or promised sparing is what we called it. Can be lots of fun. I really like the Giant Python Flips The Body. I've know that movement for years and more or less thought of it as a knife hand block and I guess it is in the form my Master taught at the time but it tickles the brain to look at forms differently.~The master said to the student, "our true problem is we don't what to grow up." The student asked the master, "how do we know when we have grown up?" The master replied, "When we no longer want/need to be lied to." I have know idea where I read that but it's a good one and humbling.Take it easy Jake. 4 minute and 21 second video with that much content is sweet!

Airbending!! :D
YES!
Two things are obvious:
1. You have had no authentic bagua training.
2. You are trying to force MMA applications on these bagua-like movements you've invented.
Don't even try to argue - not one technique is even remotely correct, and I mean from either a bagua's OR wrestling perspective.
Your Bagua is about as real as the food in Chinese takeaways.
I love the food at some Chinese takeaways! :)
+Andrew Raslan that's being generous at least Chinese take out serves a purpose.
+Kung Fu & Tai Chi Center w/ Jake Mace Just because you "love" it doesn't make it authentic.
Lol
Are you saying that Fake Mace accepts challenges?
so far, i enjoy and practise everything he has taught that has to do with bagua, and i think that everything he has taught is professional. please post as much bagua as you can. i love the forms, and especially the blocks and attacks. i would like to see more factoring in fighting into the movements though.
***QUESTION:
What is better for fighting / combat Tai Chi or Bagua? Let me know below!
There are several kinds of Bagua and Taiji, traditionally both have been used by guards of various types. Both are extremely effective, but taijiquan has been heavily modified by WJQ and YCF about a century ago into a much less effective style, while bagua remains rather effective.

Good stuff!
How many of you see the Blue Flag sticking out of Joachim's pocket? What weapon do you think is in there?
Some kind of tactical quick deploy dildo?
I'm guessing a chain whip
I'm currently just studying the basics of Bagua....and from what I learned from my Sifu, this internal art is all opened palm. Secondly, while doing lots of twisting, both feet are suppose to be planted on the floor so you can feel all the energy build up and store.
Yes! We are going to go there and do a series of videos!!!
What do you say? Ba Gua or Pa Kua?
btw - It is impossible for me to make you look or feel bad! You can only do that to yourself!
Good stuff! I started using these with a friend/student recently, and swimming is such a good internal exercise!
A couple of thoughts. I like in this video that you show sections of a form followed by the techinque, and also how you go slow so that everyone gets a chance to see what you are doing. You the Man!
Sounds good Brian! Thanks! I may be going this Fall in a couple months and if I do I look for some Mantis and we are going to film a lot of videos from famous and historical sites in China!
I love when someone can not only perform these meditative arts, but employ their combative applications. very nice. I miss KungFu

That's great! Thanks for the comment and you have now been deleted and blocked!!! Hope you enjoy watching and learning from our future video lesson! Hope you learn what Kung Fu is all about! :)
Wow, you studied a touch of Ba Gua!!! Awesome! How about start studying again 3 hours a day for a decade and get better!!!
Ba Gua fighting is all about throws, takedowns, joint locks, submission, and neutralization and redirection of your opponents strength! Keep practicing my friend!!!

Oh,and a fun fact,in the movie he defeated Master Zhang, who used Pa Kua lol.
Great post Lamont! Very True!!!
Thanks Man! And Yes, I agree! You can never please everyone and if you try you please no one!!!
Sounds like you need to practice some real Bagua Zhang! Keep watching and be at peace! Plant a garden, it is very calming!
Thank you for the complement!
The "swimming" is all lower body! If we did it together you would see how, without the legs and rooting to the ground, you have nothing!

Thank you! Love the feedback!
very nice demonstration, clear for people to see and understand. I am just curious, what style of Bagua? It says shaolin center, Im guessing Yin?
50,000 views = Lot's of people practicing Ba Gua Zhang Self Defense!
Of course! The fighting applications that are taken from the Chinese Kung Fu "Kata" or Tao Lu are a reflection of the practitioner, in this case me! They are a reflection of my experience and my energy! And they work great for me and many of my students!
Going to China soon to practice some Bagua! I love this art!
I agree! They are good, tough, train insanely, and are in arguably the best condition of any athlete on Earth!
It is. And, it's fun!
I agree! Thanks!
Thank you!
Gah, why are you not in Austin? Can you recommend anyone out this way?
How funny that this man has dozens of videos, but none of them even remotely resemble the arts they supposedly teach.
I'm not one of those guys that comments badly on videos, but while this is swimming, it is not bagua swimming (which is for sensitivity training)
i like how he crosses his legs during his "bagua circle"
Very similar!
It's called an 'underhook' and it's a very effective way of controlling your opponent while grappling.
Kung Fu is the art of fighting without fighting! Avoid the fight, live a happy life!
Thank you , that was a great refresher.
I studied several Chinese styles, but If I had it to do again, I would find a qualified BaGua instructor. It's too late now, but it's fun to watch
interesting subtext you got there, are those Chinese proverbs?
This is real Bagua!
I love Ba Gua!
Great video!!! Arm bar detail: Only cross legs if they are under the arm. Otherwise opponent can remove both legs at once.
I don't know very much of bagua. But I can't understand how you can have a solid structure with your lumbar region so much arched.

How can you express the force of your legs, or afford a very vigorous push, with that? I can't understand, so if I made a mistake please let me know how it is possible!
No you're right. Real bagua doesn't arch or twist the spine in any way.
A round spine is the source of true power. It should not be arched inwards.
Learned most of these moves when I was in high school wrestling, minus the frivolous extra movements thrown in for show. Just gonna guess it's not authentic Ba Gua.
btw: Again I'm telling you that any more confrontational and negative comments from you will be deleted! You've had enough! :)
Only You Can Do That! You Are Responsible for You!!! :)
This is poor, sorry I hate raining on any bodies parade.
Moves look pretty wushu based, which perhaps explains the 'Shaolin Gongfu' (少林功夫) banner on the wall.
The Dao and the deer knives hanging on the wall are pretty badass.
thank you for bringing the light to the ancient room of martial arts :-)
This has to be some more Shaolin Do stuff. Real Ba Gua doesn't move in this fashion, nor do they attack in this fashion.
Jake.Mace got JKDisposition!?
I agree! Well said!
I totally agree... Very Shaolin like movements... Especially the 'swimming'.
how many martial arts will you make a mockery of?
i like how its always the people that look the least im shape that talk crap in sifu maces videos
Dear ShaolinCenter,
I hope you have time for a random stranger's question.
What advice do you have for speed and timing? Simply saying "practice" opens a flood of options. Are there exercises you could recommend?
Ba Gua seems a reactive-counter system of techniques - implying an importance of rhythm and speed greater than one's own opponent.
Also, would you suggest "swimming" when working with a grappler?
It is something, but definitely not baguazhang. Why is the rear heel lifted in when he is holding the standing palm? Doesn't look right.
Ba Gua - 8 REAL Pa Kua Fighting Moves! Why 8? Well, Ba Gua or Pa Kua has 8 Palms, 8 Kua's, 64 Rules, 8 Elements, and a Chinese Ba Gua has 8 Sides. So these are the 8 Beginning Level Ba Gua (Internal Chinese Kung Fu) Fighting Applications. Get a partner and WORK IT!!!
What are the eight "elements" in your bagua, as opposed to the trigrams, or "kuas"?
Though I appreciate Jake's enthusiasm for self-marketing, this is pretty bad stuff. I am familiar with his Shaolin-Do Temple -Style Pa Kua (or Ba Gua). His emulation of the form is pretty mediocre ... and his "utility" of the movements is even worse. Maybe, though, he'll be discovered as a "male model" someday.
This looks like just wanted a hug and was hiding it under the guise of teaching a lesson
This is good, the swimming is similar to what we do in Muay Thai whilst in the clinch.
It is Ba Gua (two words....Ba Gua)! :)
Very interesting! I always find Bagua palm to be interesting anx yet I have little idea how it works. The Shifu certainly have much insight to the art.
the guy can punch Jake's torso at 1:13 how can i defend myself to that?
Effective!
4 minute and 21 second video with that much content is sweet!
very pretty but why the vast difference between form and function in most of them.
Will these work against an opponent who just keeps wailing on you?
A lot of these techniques are used in wrestling...the fireman’s, tie ups, ,mixers, head locks to snap downs...
