Having occasional emergencies while being a parent is par for the course.
There is no world where that doesn't happen.
If the job can't handle an otherwise well-organised and conscientious employee leaving a couple of hours early or taking half a day off to take care of health emergencies, then they don't have their shit together and are not well-organized.
While of course trying to browbeat the employee on the spot for having to care for her child.
A company made up of professional adults doesn't have people acting this way.
If they feel an issue of repeated absences by the employee needs to be addressed, then they make an appointment and talk with her about it. Also asking if she may need some help or accommodations.
      Absolutely manipulative and toxic behavior.

God. It’s so infuriating to see just how many employers have this attitude. Since I’ve had my child, I’ve left 3 employers due to this exact attitude. This same exact exchange happened with one after my child’s face turned blue and I had to bring her to hospital. I no longer work. It happened again at the next employer when my child had chickenpox, and they asked me to get my parents to mind MY child. Is it any wonder so many women drop out of the workforce?

At least in the USA the school has a list of those 'emergency contacts' who are allowed to pickup a child WITH a phone call from a parent/guardian before they show up. If you aren't on the list you will NOT be given custody of that child. Also, if the school nurse calls you there is no choice but to respond as soon as possible.

I was a single parent of 3 children and never once let someone I was working for down. I had a pool of childcare providers I had gone to some effort to establish so there would be always someone I could get to step in if a child became ill whilst I was working. My family live in another continent so have never been able to rely on informal childcare arrangements.
Sometimes my having to pay for childcare in such instances meant I was out of pocket to work - but my integrity and commitment to my then work mattered a lot to me. I did not ever want to be unreliable on account of my being a single parent.
I was able to honour both my commitment to whomever I was working for as well as honour my commitment to my children, and believe other parents can do so as well - so agree with the boss in this instance.
Parents need to work out how they will still honour their employment commitments were their child to become sick before agreeing to undertake a role. Serious medical emergencies excepted obviously, I am speaking of children being sent home from school or nursery for cold or flu or suchlike more minor ailments.

It's a weird one. On the one hand if it's a one off then I can see an employer being accommodating, but if it happens a lot then they start asking the difficult questions. I know someone who always used their kid being sick as an excuse to leave early, but it happened so often they got investigated and it was found out just from their Facebook page that they were lying. No posts about a sick child, even though it happened almost weekly, lots of posts about getting off work early. They were told from now on if they had to leave early due to their child they would have to produce some kind of documentation for the files. Just a letter from the school or something from the doctor. Oddly they quit shortly afterwards.

This one is weird because they aren't asking or informing they are leaving immediately. What time is it? They say an hour early so the kid is in the nurse or principal's office until then? And yeah, it sounds like something that has become a regular thing. So maybe the employee needs to meet with their manager to work out some way to accommodate the family. It seems weird to bring this up in text and not have a 1:1 with the employee after.

simple solution, No problem, You can leave early, then we will see you in an hour early the following day. Flexibility goes both ways. or you work and extra 10 min per day for the next week, so the hours are still the same
I don't care when my staff turn up and go, so long as they get the hours in, if they want to do an hour, then leave and hour, then come back so be it. if someone wants to start at 6 and finish and 2, then the next day they want to do a 8 till 4, or a 10 to 6. fine. do the hours, i don't care.
the facility is open 24/7 so it makes zero odds at all

Supervisor is correct. The company is not responsible for the situation this woman has put herself in. She cannot claim this has not happend a lot so this is appently the straw.
Women, you wanted equality and here you are crying because you got it.

He doesn't believe she has a sick kid but is using an excuse. Let's assume that's true. How would you, as an employer, handle that.
Let's also assume the coworkers are getting sick and tired of covering for her early days out.
    Go.

So honestly I’m with Dan. Why should the company have to tolerate an employee that works less and is absent more than any other employee. I would replace her with someone that wants to see the company succeed and grow instead of catering to someone’s needs. If you can’t manage your home life and work life. Then find a more flexible job like Walmart or some shit.

How is it anyone's fault that the kid gets sick more often? He could have a weaker immune system or some autoimmune disease
You would rather the employee just doesn't show up at all?

As a mother I get where she's coming from. However from the gist of the conversation it seems she's using the "my child is sick excuse" quite a bit and people are starting to notice. I've worked with men and women like this.

As long as other coworkers don't have to cover in anyway, no biggie. But I (F) resent like heII covering tasks, phones, open office hours for parent coworkers who *always* need more coverage. We all have common times we need if - but I don't want to cover for a hungover guy who partied the night before anymore than a parent. Yeah, know I'm in the minority & don't care.
