  • In this video, we will go over the step-by-step process of installing outriggers on my 2017.5 R-Pod 179. We had noticed the slide-side wall of the trailer sagging after a recent camping trip, and after considerable research and inquiry, decided on the fix that we will detail in this video.

    Interesting video John and thanks for the info with regards to the body outrigger supports. I have this problem too on my 2019 R-pod 180. I contacted Forest River about obtaining the supports, but instead got a lot push back. They feel that the supports just fixes a symptom and not the problem. They wanted me to take pictures showing the over hang sag with a combination square which I felt was reasonable. They sent me a questionnaire titled "Over Torsion Axle" where they also wanted a pictures of the axle tag on the Lippert axle, pictures of my towing set up, hitch set up, hitch, weight distribution hitch with the brand, tongue and weight capacities and tow vehicle type. They also wanted pictures of the unit showing the clearance between the fender and tires. Apparently they feel that this body sag is related to the axle and weight distribution hitch. I told her specifically that the floor sag was only evident directly under the slide out. That there is no sag in any other location. I told her that I felt sure that the issue was because of the lack of out rigger body supports at the frame. I measured the distance from each side of the frame at the axle to the ground which was exactly the same. I used a string to check for any bend in the axle housing - none. I checked the distance between the fenders and the tires which was almost the same. There was some difference in the clearance measurement only because I discovered that one fender was mounted higher on the body than the other one! I asked if I could just purchase the outrigger supports from her direct and she refused. She also wanted pictures of the inside floor sag with a level. I told her that there was no evidence of interior sag or separation between the floor and wall and hopefully will avoid any future separation if I can get these outrigger supports now so that I can install them immediately. She actually said no that I still needed to get pictures interior floor with a level. I'm at wits end with Forest River. I had many issues with this unit when I first got the unit new (that's a whole different story). I told her that if I can't get the outrigger supports from her, that I would go to a local fabricator and have them made. Sorry for being so wordy here, but wanted you to know my story and couldn't find any other way to get in touch with you.

      Thanks for sharing your experience. Unfortunately, it is par for the course for R-Pod and was for me somewhat. They have been pushing back lately on supplying outriggers to customers and have taken some owner's units in and replaced the axle. If they are willing to fully add outriggers and replace the axle on their dime off-season, you may want to consider it. These all should have been recalled for this sag issue. There is a ton of dialog on this exact issue on the R-Pod owners forum (not FB): rpod-owners.com. FYI, I saw an identical post on another video and only left this one. Thanks.

      Thanks again for replying. Yes...at first I balked at going through the process on the axle and all the info and pics they wanted when I was just wanting to purchase the out riggers. After giving it more consideration, I'm going to cooperate with them and see where the process goes. Like you said, if they are willing to add the out riggers and replace the axle on their dime, why not go a head with it and at least test the waters.

      @@wavanauken Same thing just happened to us this spring. We had an annoying back and forth, but FR replace the torsion axle on our 2017 for free. They said they would send the outriggers along with it, but we would need to take care of the install of those ourselves, but the dealership doing our axle did the outriggers for us as well and we didn't pay a dime. It was gone two months, maybe only lost one month of the season, but it was annoying that it was that long because FR made the dealership go through the whole picture process all over again despite them already telling us it was approved.

    • @wavanauken
      @wavanauken 3 місяці тому

      @@Bandgazebo My axle turned out to be OK which I was pretty sure of anyway as I had no symptoms nor was there any sag in the suspension. The dealership confirmed the body sag under the slide out after Forest River made them jump through many hoops. I knew there was sag there as I had already checked it. But they did say they saw evidence of water leakage and attributed that to bad owner maintenance! That really ticked me off. Uh...yeah it had leaked water from the get go when it was brand new because the manufacturer didn't seal the the spoiler on the roof correctly. And then there was another water leak 2-3 years later because they didn't mount the AC unit correctly when they didn't properly torque the bolts to apply the right amount of pressure to the A/C roof gasket seal. Geeeeeez. And I got these leaks fixed right away so there was no prolonged water contamination or damage to the walls. Just some staining. They also said they could sell me the supports. Ha! SELL me the outrigger supports!!! I said NO. I will get them from a good independent metal fabricator which I found through one of the Forest River forums. The supports I found were much better quality than the ones FR offered me. And get this - I was talking to this independent shop about this issue and he said, yeah...we've sold a lot of these outrigger supports made directly for the FR R-pod. I asked about how many and he said oh...about 400-500 or there abouts. REALLY!!! That many shows just how poor the build was. The weight of the slide-out directly over the cantilevered frame where FR failed to install supports is what lead to the body sag. Not the axle which they said could cause this. What!!! The axle can cause the unsupported body to sag! Ha!! And it sure wasn't because of the alleged water contamination.
      When I first got this vehicle, there were about 20 things I found wrong with it. The dealership fixed a lot of it after many weeks of frustration getting it done. I repaired a lot because I was just sick and tired of dealing with them and taking it back and forth. That and I sure was more confident in the repairs I made myself because I knew i would do it correctly. I called Forest River directly about the poor workmanship when the unit was originally built. I sent them an 11 page write up with pictures of everything that I found wrong with it. They covered everything warranty, but that was such a hassle. They said that is what the warranty is for - to have these issues repaired. I told them no, the warranty is technically to repair mechanical issues that arise during the warranty contract period, not for defects that it comes with right out of the factory. Heck...the dealership even admitted that Forest River uses them as their quality control because they know there will be problems. Ha!!! I asked Forest River that I deserved some compensation for the hassle (many back and forth deliveries of the unit to the dealership, the waiting, the seemingly endless back and forth communications with the dealership and Forest River, etc.). They asked what kind of compensation was I looking for and I said somewhat jokingly some cash back would be nice. They said how much?!?! I was totally floored. I said how about $500 and they agreed! That says a lot and I'm not talking about the positive side.
      Also, actually, I had to get the AC gasket done twice. The first time I made a claim to my extend warranty company and I had it done at a dealership. Six months later it started leaking again. The gasket was cheap and it failed (split at the corners). I fixed it myself this time as I wasn't going to trust them to do it again even if it was warranty. I mean...the warranty is no good if they can't make quality repairs. And I wasn't going to use the same type of cheap gasket. I used a premium one piece high-quality closed cell EPDM sponge rubber gasket. Sure it was more expensive than the cheap gasket that was originally used, but it was a better gasket.
      Sorry for the wordy response. I will never deal with Forest River or their so called recommended warranty dealership service centers. Just FYI, I'm a retired mechanic and fleet manager with 38 years experience, so I do know a little bit about these things.

    This was so helpful, thank you! Couple of notes- the long drill bit suggested by another follower was very worth it. They were only willing to sell me 6 outriggers, I used 5 on my 176t. Mine was slumped pretty low, so I corrected it some, but not completely. The amount of lift I had to apply with the jack was actually attempting to lift the tire off the ground and I got worried about everything separating and ripping the floor from the frame. So, I put as much pressure as I felt comfortable doing and unslumped the wall some but not to completely square. I don't have sad feelings about this, the problem is now improved and stabilized and for sure will not get worse... Thanks so much for your detailed video!

    John, I appreciate the effort and time you put into this video and your instructions. I just completed installing outriggers on my 179. It was built in February 2014 and had NO outriggers, unless you count the step brackets. I put 6 outriggers on the slide side and 5 on the door side. To better protect the waste and fresh tanks I screwed a piece of plywood to a 1/4-inch piece of steel and clamped it steel side toward the tank to ensure I did not go through the wood and puncture the tank. The gaps between the frame and tanks were from 1 to 2-1/2 inches. Again, thanks for the excellent video and instructions. They gave me a lot of confidence in correcting the sagging problem!

    I finally got my outriggers installed, but I made a slight modification to the way Forest River manufactured them to address the issue of how to fit them over the trim. What I ended up doing was cutting some lengths of 3/16" thick flat steel (the same thickness as the trim), and welding them to the outriggers to fill the gap between the outrigger and the floor. Depending on the gap, the pieces were between 5 1/2 to 5 3/4" long by 2" wide. The welded on pieces fill the gap between the frame and the trim perfectly, so the outriggers fit squarely against the bottom of the floor and the frame with no gaps. I used the 2" width to allow enough room for the welds, and they also provide wider support under the floor. Otherwise I followed your instructions pretty much the way you did it. I did attach the end of the outriggers to the floor through the trim using the holes provided with stainless #8 truss head self drilling screws to prevent any movement of the outriggers when the r pod is in motion. I put a blob of silicone sealant in between the trim and the end of the outrigger, then drove the screws in through the sealant to address the concern of moisture possibly penetrating the opening. Basically the same thing Forest River did with the trim mounting screws at the factory. I am satisfied with the outcome. I installed six outriggers on the left side of my 180 (four under the slide out), and four outriggers on the right side, skipping the area of the stairs which already provide support to the floor. So 10 total seemed about right for my 180.

    Hi John thanks for the thorough video, although my pod did not have a sag I added them as a precaution. I noted my early install in the RPOD Owners Forum where I installed these outriggers as well, I placed the outriggers under the nylon rollers that the slide out uses to move, figured the downward pressure of the slide is more significant on the rollers. Re attaching the screws using the two holes to the outer edge of the outriggers, I debated about how to attach the edge of the outrigger to the slide out frame since FR had added these holes i figured they were doing this on later models (no instructions from FR on how to do the install) i decided to carve out of the aluminum channel a place to slip the outrigger into, I cut out just the lip of the channel not the whole channel, not sure if this was really necessary but went ahead and did it. I did add two screws into the edge of the channel and into the outer slide out frame. Also i did order 4 additional outriggers for the door side, not sure if I will add all 4 to that side or just 3 and instead install a 5th one to the slide out side a foot or so back from the front leading edge near the welded angle iron that is used to attach the floor of the pod to the frame. Similar to where you installed one. Your thoughts on where to install the outriggers on the door side, i figure one directly under the step, and then evenly spaced in front of the fender?

      John, thanks for sharing how you went about installing the outriggers. On my 179, the two step brackets act as outriggers and extend to the outer wall as far as I can tell. I was contemplating adding three door-side outriggers equidistant from the step to the front of the trailer, approximately 31.5" inches apart (exact measurements are on my diagram on my docs & downloads page, last two pages on the Outrigger Install doc): johnmarucci.com/docs-downloads/

    • @JohnMarucci
      @JohnMarucci  2 роки тому

      I didn't consider welding given the use of the through bolts in the top hole. These should provide plenty of pull-out strength for the outriggers. I suppose if you can weld or know someone who can, there is no reason not to do this. I suppose the most sturdy solution would be to use through bolts and weld, but at some point it is over engineering for the issue. I have seen some solutions that are very heavy, but may be more than needed vs putting the Forest River outriggers closer together with through bolts. We'll see how mine holds up and you definitely need to be comfortable with the solution you choose. Thanks!

    Hi John! Thanks for you video. I just got 4 outriggers from forest river after contacting them to inquire (that’s how many they sent). I have a 2017 rp180. I have NO outrigger supports at all. I don’t like how the outrigger comes out onto the trim channel that’s made for the vinyl screw cover strip. How is yours holding up? Has it flattened the trim channel? Im considering cutting the ends so they fit inside the trim channel instead of on it.
    As to the outer screws on the support. I would recommend to install at least one on each. This would prevent the support from twisting out of place if heavily loaded, like over bumps. (I’m a civil engineer with some structural background.)
    Also, I’m curious if you’ve ever heard of anyone using treated lumber as floor support between the frame rails. We’re starting to feel a little flex in our floor in the large gap area. Tank supports help for most of the floor, but in the middle there’s a big unsupported span.

    We have a 2019 R-pod 189 and just recently noticed significant wall sag under the slide out. We had already scheduled some recall work at the local dealer and asked them to look at the issue. After getting a claim number from the service department, we decided to contact the Forest River warranty department and spoke to them at length about the issue. We feel that this is a serious design flaw for which FR should be held accountable. The fender over the tire got so low that a sharp screw on the underside actually scored the tire tread. Our brand new Goodyear Endurance tire is now damaged. For several years owners have had this issue and have shouldered the burden of fixing the issue. Our repair will cost over $1000 to fix since we consider this a serious safety issue we did not consider doing it ourselves. To prove this was design flaw, while at the dealer we looked at the 2022 153 and 202 they had five and seven outriggers on each side. To us, this is an admission of their design flaw. After experiencing this terrible customer service and lack of responsibility for their poor quality design, how could we consider another FR purchase? We strongly feel this sagging wall issue should be a recall like the drain pipe support failure. Sadly, there are other issues such as the flooring support and others...And by the way, did you say that they don't offer an additional year warranty any more? Another way to avoid responsibility?

    John - truly appreciate your channel and the information it provides. Couple of questions if you happen to know the answers. Any reason, other than cost, that you didn’t use stainless steel hardware? How long did it take, approximately, for each out rigger? Why is it important to have the trailer perfectly flat since you are using a square - that piece didn’t make sense to me. I am looking to do this as a preventative measure. I have not noticed any sag on my 2017 179rp.

    • @JohnMarucci
      @JohnMarucci  2 роки тому +1

      Great questions. I used zinc hardware mainly for cost savings. It took about 20+ minutes per outrigger, but keep in mind the first couple took longer as I was working the process. We were also video taping, which added time. I could probably do one in 15-20 minutes each after set up. As far as leveling the trailer to the surface, that’s so the jack isn’t at an angle to the trailer when jacking. Let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks!

    Just purchased a 2018 RP-179 and am really glad I ran into your work. I’ve not even measured yet if I’m sagging or not, but am going to take on this work as its clearly a design miss that needs to be addressed. Question - I have a MIG welding setup and have some experience, would you consider welding vs drilling and bolting the outriggers? Thanks for all the details you offered here. Great job

      It’s your call on welding them. Many people do this. You may want to hit the RPod owners site to follow some of the examples people are using. If you can make your own outriggers this would likely be a better solution vs the factory ones. Here is the link to the owners forum: rpod-owners.com

      Ron, if you don’t see outriggers on the frame under the trailer, use a combination square to see if the floor is sitting square to the frame. The 179 has more weight on the slide out than your model, so you may not have an issue. If not, then it is your call to do the job proactively or just monitor it. Thanks!

      It is tough to say when FR put how many outriggers on what models and during what model years. I've heard from some people that they have several, while others have none. I think the safest way is to go under your R-Pod and diagram out everything in terms of bracing that goes from the frame tube to the outer wall, then plan accordingly. Hope everyone has info they need to work a fix as you see fit. Thanks again!

Your description of the poor rPod floor construction (in another video) as the primary cause of this issue...... is disturbing. As a company that's been building trailers for a while you'd think they would know better. How much added cost would they incur by providing wall supports every foot all the way around? Very little...... The Big Three Detroit car manufacturers finally woke up and fixed their poor quality issues. It would be nice if the trailer manufacturers would do the same.

    The edge of the wall has some aluminum trim that the outer edge of the Outrigger rests upon. Maybe a quarter of an inch thick. When you square the frame to the sub-floor underneath, you are not including this. Would this actually give you a little extra lift? Possibly a good thing over time? My question is, did the aluminum trim ever start to collapse from the slide-out weight over time? If so, would it be worth its to insert a 1/4 spacer along the top of the Outrigger prior to install? Do you or anyone here know how many are needed for the RP180? Thank you!

    • @JohnMarucci
      @JohnMarucci  Рік тому +1

      People have done different things to compensate for the aluminum trim strip you mention. Some have notched the trim strip with a Dremel, which I thought might introduce water issues over time. Others added a spacer like you mentioned. Some people cut the outrigger arm short of the trim strip or had the outrigger fabricated as such. I did non of these and in the short run it didn't seem to damage anything. However, the trailer was sold last April, so I can't speak to how they've held up after much use. There are several threads about the outriggers on the rpod-owners.com forum if interested. Thanks!
