Don;t think so. I have heard interviews from various cricketers over the years who participated in this game. There is no real evidence that bowling first was not a team decision. No one said so after the game either. Tendulkar writes in his book that Indian team realized around 25th over that the pitch might not last the game. Its difficult to imagine that Azhar or anyone elese knew this beforehand. Kambli was the only one who claimed (many years later) that he was surprised that Azhar chose to bowl, but that could just be a statement to remain in relevance. No other player of that team backed the claim. Azhar, Jadeja etc may have fixed other games, don't think they fixed this one. It was pure bad luck and De-Silva
Many questions unanswered after this match: 1. Why didn't India bat first? 2. Why didn't Srinath complete his bowling quota? He only bowled 7 overs in the match. 3. Under what rule was the match awarded to a team? If there was a disturbance, the match should have been replayed on the reserve day without the crowds. 4. Dalmiya was laughing with Clive Lloyd while the match was suspended.
1. Sri Lanka were strong chasers so Azhar may have thought to put Sri Lanka in an unfamiliar situation - clearly backfired ! 2. When it is seen the pitch is taking turn and spinners effective, why would you jeoperdize rythem and momentum by inserting a seamer on a pitch that doesnt have lateral movement ? 3. There was no rule to re-play on a reserve day in WC1996 - as per the rules that all contesting nations agreed. You can't just say that cos the crowd cannot behave in a civilized manner. 4. So you suggest Dalmiya should have cried or should have thrown a few bottles to the ground ? :)
The joy began in the first over for indian fans.
And Gameover in the second over itself.
The nightmare came in the form of Aravinda de silva 😊

No - better team won.
Many questions unanswered after this match:
