@@calimatt24traxxas depends on what work is needed. Personally I'd suggest buying something newer . It's a great boat but she's heavy and slow compared to modern boats. It's underpowered for its size but still moves pretty good.

Id go with this and build what you want.
Now if the boat is complete and motor runs and not worn out, then 275 wouldn't be that bad. Just know they don't make parts so when you break something you have to re-engineer other parts to fix whats broke.
I had to do that with the steering rudder if you seen a previous build.

I had some Nitro boats back in late 90's, Lots of experience with Nitro RC and some electric. I was thinking about getting back into the RC boat scene, a friend at work has a very fast electric Cat. He has a huge motor in it and it sounds like it is fast and uncontrollable/unstable at times. He has a 195 amp esc and 6s lipo single motor Cat hull. I was more thinking of getting something controllable but maybe lower top speed to keep me happy and have something well balanced. I want something hobby grade that won't break the bank but something I can limit the power on to teach my 8 year old how to use the boat but I would like the ability to match or beat my friend when needed with or without mods. I would like to keep total cost to around 500-1000 dollars.

Couple things... water condition will determine the hull and driver... since your focus is having fun as well as a kid to drive id go with a vee hull.
They will be a bit slower then anything else, but there the easiest to drive, and will handle any water condition the best.

Offshoreelectrics.com is where I'd recommend to buy they have alot of option in your price range but keep in mind if a boat is 600$ you still need a charger and batteries and such.
If you need more help email me.
Chrispatrick85@gmail and ill be glad to help.

@@ChrisPatrickRC Thanks for your help, my friend offered to sell me his boat it is an impulse 31. I thought it was a Cat but it is a v hull. It has an upgraded flex drive a brass prop a 195 amp esc a bigger motor a couple 6S batteries a charger and the original esc and motor are included. He is going to give me a deal on it. I think I am going to get a small entry level boat for the kids to bash on and keep them away from the bigger boat. The last boat I had was a Kyosho Jet Stream 1000.

Dude, that boat is badass. Makes me want to get a nitro boat. What size engine is that?
