That was a fun review! Please do more of these Dan! I'm shopping for the "perfect 10" cat, right from the factory. 😳 I would love to know more about how much effort/expense went into adding all the upgrades to this boat. What would they do differently if they did it all over again? With so many hybrid/solar cats hitting the market, what is their opinion of these? I realize they are substantially higher in initial cost - I wonder how long it is before the fuel savings make up for it. Any way we could get an estimate/breakdown of their annual boat operating costs? How much should I be budgeting? What does it cost to insure a $500K boat? Thanks Dan - you are an excellent youtube host!
Hi Dwight. The upgrades cost us about $60k, and there are a few things Dan didn't touch on such as folding props and new spinnaker. Most of the labor for the upgrades was provided by me, so if you're paying someone plan on at least double that. There are no upgrades I regret, and the only thing I would do differently is to not hire out the install of the freezer and washer. I had to redo the whole job anyway so there was no point in paying them. The big upgrades were done before we left Florida and I'm not counting them as part of our annual budget. Our annual budget is $60k, and we spend roughly half of that on maintenance. I DIY almost everything because the quality of work with contractors always irritates me. I don't want to pay for terrible work. If you don't DIY, it's going to be a lot more expensive. The age old question of how much does it cost to sail full time is easily answered with another question. How much do you have? It costs exactly that much. Insurance is terrible, especially for US citizens on US flagged boats. When we bought the boat insurance was expensive, but until we were full time the boat lived in Florida where hurricanes could be a problem. After taking the boat out of the hurricane zone, our insurance went up even more. So we dropped to liability only. It's cheap, and also great motivation to take great care to not put the boat in harms way. Our German friends with the same boat pay only slightly more for full coverage than we pay for liability. I'm not a huge fan of hybrid propulsion systems. Fuel is one of our lowest expenses at about $600 a year. It's not even enough fuel to make the climate people upset. Hybrid systems cost a lot and are an unproven system. When you're at a small island hundreds of miles from parts or a technician who can troubleshoot the system, you need reliability. If I were new boat shopping I would insist on Nani engines. It's a Kubota engine with no electronics. Hope this helps.
@@andersonautomotive Thank you for your response and good advice John! Much appreciated. I tend to do all my own maintenance also, for the same reasons you listed.

You'll get a lot less boat for the money, but it will be a really nice boat. Low maintenance? Good luck with that.
Hello Dan, I saw your video on the 48 foot catamaran pugeau at $500,000. Just wanted to ask what your take is on the brand Silent yachts going back to 2016 and moving forward and also a question do you believe a solar powered catamaran should have Gyro sea keeper. Second question, would you find that it is a good investment for a solar powered camera with a diesel generator back up? You’re very intelligent and I think you should do a tour of a solar powered catamaran. I want to be out on the water, but I don’t want to have a sale catamaran I’d be better on a power or solar power catamaran, what would you think that the residual value would be after five years on a solar power catamaran percentages to share?

Great video,I think you were U fair with the price score, obviously it is very expensive, but like you said if you had the money you would buy one, which should make your score higher. A score of 2, sounds like the boat is a rip off.
I think his scale is a little different than most. It's "how many people out of ten who are looking for a cruising boat could buy this boat?" Vs value for the money.
The scale I made is a little different than most. It's "how many people out of ten who are looking for a cruising boat could buy this boat?" Vs value for the money. :)
Great video, but I completely disagree with the price point score. Have you looked at the price of 50 foot luxury catamarans lately? I think the $500K price point is a steal when it is around a third of what a new one would cost. That said, $500K is WAY too much for me also, but that does not mean it is over-priced. I do not believe it is fair to use the logic "can anyone buy this boat" when determining if the price is too high. Heck, I could not afford a jet airplane at $10M, but that does not mean it is over priced. Not everyone can buy a jet airplane or a very large luxury catamaran, but that does not mean they are over priced. In this case they got a 50 foot luxury catamaran for about 1/3 the price of new and the boat had essentially never been sailed. I would say that justifies and price grade of 10, not 2.
