Excellent, and hello from Russia. This is one of my favorite diesel locomotive of United Kingdom. It has a beautiful design and nice sound of engine. Pity that service of this machines ended at 1980 ‘s.
@vicsams4431 Thanks, but Class 40 is more looks like a TE7 - two section diese engine with electric transamission (2×2000 = 4000 h.p 62 or 90 mph), which was built for passangear service from 1956 - 1964. TEP70 appeared much later, and it is more correct to compare it with Deltic or Infinity 125.

In the 1960s, if I'm not mistaken, there was their heyday. They were good for their time until they were pushed by deltics, peaks, and brushes. The 70th appeared later, and they were more lucky with the consortium and the prototype. Well, yes, I like diesel and electric more than steam. Especially I adore old Russian and English diesel and electric locomotives. I used to love watching and listening to these on the East Coast main line up near Dundee - or anywhere else I happened to see them. That engine / exhaust sound is so distinctive, the rhythmic pulsing bass rumble and soprano whistle.
If ANY of you old loco fans wondered whether your favourite was the 'Choppers' , 'Rats' , 'Duffs', 'Wagons', "Tractors' , 'Grids", 'Hoovers', 'Deltics' or even the Fantastic 'Whistlers' whatever your bag was and if you EVER get the chance take yourself off and go drive one!!! IT IS AN EXPERIENCE YOU"LL NEVER FORGET. Forget about jumping out of a plane with a parachute...... Drive a heritage Loco. Sit in that seat , release that brake , blast that Horn, Drop down that window to smell and feel the power THEN open that throttle. PRICELESS.
That sound! That is what York always used to sound like! I remember we used to get Merrymakers from London to York and the train was always 47 hauled as far as York, engine change to a 40 and it continued to Scarborough. Happy memories - I have lived!
Stayed in the royal station hotel in 1975 to visit the newly opened nrm. Bedroom faced the platforms and that tinkle was the sound I fell asleep to. A forty idling in the parcels bay. Just lovely.
The sound of Leeds and Manchester Piccadilly. Thing of beauty! D200 Leeds - Carlisle and back on Saturdays soaking up the steam heating back in the eighties. They were the days.

I'm 16, from Poland and I LOVE BRITISH TRAINS! :3 I'm coming for holidays to U.K. for 2 months and I would like to travel on ECML to Newcastle and visit all railroad museums alongside the route: York, Darlington and Shildon :D (Bishop Auckland branch). Class 40 is my second favorite after class 89. 89 40 90/91
cr341v3 cr4f7ing York railway museum and Shildon locomotion museum are brilliant. You can easily spend an entire day at each museum. They are both free entry. Just look at each locomotive and get to understand and appreciate it. Take very many photos. Sometimes engineers at are there so you can ask questions. York is biggest but Shildon locomotion is where the railways were created. I’m sure you will enjoy both places. Each is next to a railway station so easy to get to.
Trevor Ledgeway Absolutely! I love the majority of Old diesels and electrics. Went to Barrow hill a while ago and they had a Green D numbered Beauty, idling in the roundhouse!I wish i could own such a Machine!
Late to the chat but it’s funny that the 47 on the back is given less attention given the lack of diesel traction and the rarity of seeing the 37 on ‘roids class 40 a few who gathered to see it bothered to watch the 47, including the owner of this clip yet no mention in the title, just the 40. Class 47, untiring and under appreciated I was pleased to see you in this clip, one day there will be a vid for you but while there is mainline work for you you’ll continue to slip under the radar you magnificent beast.

Yeah, he does get about a fair bit! After 52 years service he still loves it though. This Class 40 was brand new when he started at York Sheds! Things have kinda come full circle...
I grew up as a teen, mid 60's in Thirsk (approx. 20miles north of York) on the main LNER line north/south. I can well remember "trainspotting" at Thirsk station and watching 40s and Deltics on express passenger trains speeding through the station. What a sight. At the time of this occurrence there was also a steam locomotive still kept at the station for local yard work.

I believe that the 40’s were slightly more powerful in bhp compared to the 37. But to me, these engines in look and sound were the business! They looked and sounded menacing and powerful. I loved them, and still do. Fond memories of waiting at Selby for a connection to York on the old bit of ecml that has now gone. A rake of Mk 1’s with either a peak, 47 or a 40, blasting away on full throttle heading north. Memories of a long time ago, but etched in my memory for eternity. How cool were the railways in the 70’s and 80’s . We thought they would be there forever, but they changed. Maybe a lot of changes for the good, but we always remember those days gone by. Somehow more carefree, easier, not bound by so many regulations.

Lovely sound, reminiscent of the Euston/Holyhead trains in the sixties and seventies pulling away from Rhyl and Prestatyn. Valenta/ Inter City 125s sound almost as good, as do the old Deltics and Class 30s.

Looking at the cab view of the 40 it's striking how primitive the BR Modernisation fleet of diesels and electrics actually were, compared with the Pendolino, 350 or 323. The 66 is a retrograde development and little better than the 47. Surely driver comfort should be considered in parallel with loco power, efficiency and versatility?
Don't think I'll see that for another year or so. This is quite an interesting locomotive this as it looks like a 37 but sounds like a 20. Just a shame there are not many around these days compared to deltics and 47s

I was working bidston east the day before the became 97, and because of the weight of it on the light rail system, it derailed. there were lots of people with camera's. does anyone have a photo.
47804 didn't need to do any rear end assistance on that train. It was there primarily for on board power supply. It also worked some empty stock moves in/out of Southport, dragged the train into York from the sidings (early evening) and pulled the train from Saltburn to Darlington in service to turn it ready for the return leg. An extremely popular and successful day out, which ran like clockwork, featuring a few places unlikely to ever be visited by a class 40 again I imagine.
Joe Ritchie Horses for courses really. They both have the same bore and stroke, though the 40's have four extra cylinders and two extra turbo chargers as im sure you're aware. I would probably have to agree though - that in the 'Growling' stakes, 37's have an ever so slight edge 😉

Used to live in a railway cottage at Colwich, used to listen to these idling most Saturday nights on engineering trains
