1937 Mercedes-Benz w153 Cold Start After 11 Years (1080p)

- 1937 one military guy bought this Mercedes from Tallinn car dealer when it was brand new. Around 40s Soviet Union confiscated this Mercedes and gave it The Ministry of agriculture. After that it was State farm director's car. After that were there like 3 owners before my father got it.
1979 were this Mercedes in traffic. It were last year when it drove in traffic. - Авто та транспорт
The real hero of this clip is the electric starter by Robert Bosch AG
... and the battery and the induction coil!
And those poor lil battery cables......

HAhahahahahahahahahah
Low compression engine. Little torque needed on starter.
Its always best to instantly rev up to redline as soon as it starts especially when its an 80 +year old car that has not been run in a decade. That tar like old sludgey oil on a nice cold winter day is at its peak for lubrication.
It revs by it self sometimes.
Hilarious
I don't think it's going anywhere anytime soon without a major rebuild, so what's the difference??
He turned engine with starter at least 5 minutes before it actually started, this long start-up builds up also oil pressure. That oil doesn't have to be 80 years old there. if it was after last oil change just occasionally started, then oil quality doesn't deteriorate much in not used engine. How dirty is the oil is possible to check from oil dipstick, not seen in video but I have reason to believe that he checked oil level even before connecting battery. Despite of long stay and cold weather starter turned engine quite fast meaning that it has relatively low viscosity oil in it. However, this engine looks a lot like Gaz-51 R6 engine with modification to fit air filter into engine bay. If so then it's not 80 years old and is not rare also.
A 1937 car that didn't move for 11 years and without fuel and oil and in winter.......congrats to Mercedes
And that's called "Fine German Engineering"
@@suryateja1713 for the past yes for sure and up till the early 1980s yes beyond that...not so much....thanks to japan just taking the lead for reliable cars from then on towards the modern and current era of cars nothing really seems to get past japans modern current engineering for reliability compared to what german engineering used to be back then.
Japanese cars can break too, you know!😁😁
Mercedes have a big range of cars available they are a bit hit and miss but if you do some homework before buying they have some great cars , my history of owning mb cars over the years is proof of this , 20 years with no major issues
I don’t see how that would be possible. The engine needs fuel otherwise it can’t run. It also needs oil to lubricate everything, especially once it’s warmed up.
It happens when a man has passion for cars , dies and no one in his family shares his passion .
Saw that a lot of times
What a sad story..
I can't figure out HOW somebody could even have the idea of startin up a 90 year old car who didn't run for 11 years right in the middle of a snowy winter...people are amazing.
and anyone knows, oil is thick when cold. so lets wait for summer, change oil than do it again
and dont turn the motor so high, when he didnt work for so long time
and...the cable is so thin. normaly it must burn ore glow
nok nik I’m 93 years old and still a Virgin
Привет
Change the oil, good for another 2 wars
I was going to suggest it.. and this was the first comment 😂
lol sure!
No, don't change the oil, once you lose the original oil, you lose half the value of the car.
Leaving such a masterpiece to its own fate should be considered as a crime.
Its a junk, you maybe will get some nickels in car dumpster
@@fakeplayer9088it may look like junk for you but some people really see potential in that "piece of junk". It can be restored. The important part is just the engine. The body can be fixed by a good service.
@@fakeplayer9088 One man's trash is another man's treasure
The engineering behind these old Mercedes was incredible. In fact, right up to the mid 90's Mercedes, cost no object, engineering and build quality was/is just legendary, and they really were in a class of their own, with cars like the W140 S-Class. Then it all started going horribly wrong after rival companies upped their games, and Mercedes found themselves with some stiff competition when it came to their flagship models, from the likes of BMW and Lexus. Alas, instead of taking the bull by the horns and fighting back accordingly, they chose to cut corners in order to save money. My neighbour, for instance, parked up his 2003 C200, over the winter. When he came to start it around six months later it was having none of it. For nearly two days he, and a couple of his friends tried in vain to get this thing back to life, but it refused to even cough, let alone start. I'm all for progress, but modern cars are so damn complicated, they are almost impossible to find any fault without tens of thousands of pounds worth of diagnostic equipment at your disposal. With older cars though, it's either down on compression, it's not getting fuel or there's no spark. Simple.
poor Mercedes this breaks my heart
The engine in it is not native - it is Soviet. This makes Mercedes really poor.
@@user-qq1id2em7x is it?
@@Gabriel-he6ih No Mercedes Never had Russians/soviet motor in it
@@vdotmpst3364 bro he clearly said it's not native this means its not his original engine, these people swapped it with an soviet engine
@@vdotmpst3364 you’re incorrect. After the Soviet occupation in 45 a lot of Mercs were fitted with Soviet GAZ engines. This would be one of those examples
The heat coming from the starter motor heated the engine to its normal temperature for sure 😂

But i have to pay my respect, that it'll run for an age of 90 years!
Yep because this car is worth 800 000$ when its restored but bad thing is that where do you found parts for this car

FFFFFF
Almost 100 years after this car was made and released, and she still wakes up and lives!! Even after 11 years of standing still. Antique and underrated! I love me an old car or truck, man! Especially from my birth decade: the 1990s! :)
It is a pity that this historical masterpiece is out in the open and covered in snow. Whoever puts it outside is either crazy or does not know its value or wants to destroy it. This car deserves a garage and a car.

It is obvious this guy does not known a whole lot about (these) cars.
I am actually quite surprised that
1. he did not burn up that starter (repeatedly)
2. that he did not ruin the engine revving it up without letting the oil circulate/ motor warm up,
Just another testament how well Mercedes used to be built.
Please take more care with this piece of history :)
+Panther666 +1, poor starter... and why is it parked outside... too bad... oh well...

Oldest engines are the most reliable. Started a 1928 Citroën after sitting 13 years, easy. Good luck to start a current Mercedes in 2100...
In 2100 will be necessary a computer expert
in 2100 the world is lost and dead. 😄😄
New Mercedes sits one month and has to be towed to dealer

@@leifandersson6808 Mercedes cars of today are AWFUL! had one in 36,000 miles and needed new piston rings
Simply awful
Can't say I've ever seen anybody beat up a car so much before.
Adding a few drops of gas in the carb will eliminate all this unnecessary cranking and killing the starter
the thing he was pumping was the priming button no pouring gas into these old cars.
Adobe.
Yeah man 😂
My thoughts exactly there are dozens of start sprays so... Or is to make suspense or to kill the starter that probably it will not getting any spare part after 100 years almost, anyway it got better to throttle it at maximum with rusty pistons and rings and cemented oil🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️ and the. We could keep Goin....
I also could check that the alternator could not getting signal to charge or the diodes could not getting contact with the rottor
That starter is an absolute solider 👌😂
Every Mercedes dealership should have one of these outside! When anyone asks how reliable are your cars ? 😉👍
Edit: how reliable ""were'' your cars

How reliable they pretty much always are.
I know for a fact, actually. 👍

man that is a shame. Sell this car to somebody who can take care of it. I mean it's not your fault that you don't have a garage. But its a waste when it sits outside and rust away. Even in that shape you can get some good money for it.

This car is more worth then your entire Junkyard!
Starter is tough as hell lol
4:55 is probably one of the best angles seeing the engine cranking is more satisfying
Bless that starter motor...
I'm not judging, only interested: why are you letting this beautiful car rot away instead of fixing it?
the car is probably an old man who passed away right after he left the car there
Money
The original engine has long been replaced with a Russian one. After that it was probably only driven in the fields and then abandoned. Besides it will be expensive to be restored, let alone sourcing parts from all over the world for a car that was made 80 years ago.
By God what a smooth engine, once warmed up nicely.
This one def isn’t anymore lol. At least not after the abuse it was put through during the making of this video lol.

Amazing engine sound! Love to hear it redline!!!!
When we used to live in Wisconsin the only car that would start like clock work was my 1978 Monte Carlo, I had 7 vehicles in my driveway, even a Ford Mustang, the square body type practically new, useless in winter, had a Pontiac Grand am, Mercury, a GMC SUV, my wife hated it, 🤣 ...
Amazing the starter hasn't burned up, but it may have been damaged by this abuse. Amazing also the battery lasted all that time that's pretty rough on the electrical system esp. a six volter they draw so much current... It acts like it's starved for fuel you should add fuel to the intake, look for a vacuum leak, check timing, check the plugs, or just try something different to get the fuel mixture more correct. If everything is right it will start quickly, instead of just cranking it to freakin death.
Dave Bloxham it didn’t even sound like it had the best of compression after sitting dry all those years. Then just to rev the snot out of it when they did get it to run....ugh. Starter definitely sustained years worth of damage during all of that endless cranking. I'd not be surprised if it welded itself into one solid piece after cooling down from this.
Maybe the cold helps a lot in this to prevent in overheating that's a huge difference even with the oils but I said before in other user subscriber that it would all of that completely avoidable..... 🤦♂️

put a little oil in each cylinder. .builds better cranking compression. ..and spray starting fluid ...
Better yet change the oil for clean winter grade, drain old gas and put in fresh, pull the plugs, fog cylinders with penetrating oil, freewheel crank to build oil pressure and prime gas pump, replace plugs, squirt carb and watch engine spring to life on first try without trashing anything.
