I almost died today with my dad when we got carried by a rip current and i panicked very bad and we tried to swim againt the current and barely made it in. We swalloed so much salt water i couldn'tbreathe by the end of it. I'm 17 and a very bad swimmer. If I wasn't wearing a life jacket, I would be dead 100% I'm glad you survived.

@@Nix27. Oh god you are lucky you had a life jacket on, but I can empathize with how you feel. I am very glad you survived today, you should be proud of yourself. Good job!

One of my cousins family member just died in Tel Aviv from this. It's important for people to know this information and if you're not a strong swimmer just stay out of the water!

Trisha Lisa Yeah just today me and my 4 year old sister went on our float and riding on the waves, we then realized that we were going kinda far out and thought nothing of it but about 5 minutes later we were out really far and I was yelling for help while trying to comfort my little sister. I tried to paddle back to shore but we were to far out and there’s a lot of sharks at the beach I was at... about another 5 minutes later we were so far out that everyone on the beach looked like little specks, a boat came up behind us and I tried yelling for help and I waved my arms, the guy just smiled and kept on going. I was scared for my sister and didn’t know what to do then scream and wave my arms. About 7 minutes later I saw a whole crowd at the shore and a small boat coming up to see what was wrong, then I saw him come closer to us and he finally got to us. A few minutes after hoping on the boat and attaching the float to it we saw the police coming up behind us... I’m so glad that we are safe and this made me realize that I have to be more careful while swimming out in the ocean. And I’m so sorry for ur loss

@@Lilly-wx2pm I am here watching this video and reading your comment because today I got stuck in a rip current, it was my first time ever experiencing something like this. It was a very scary feeling, I felt helpless and got desperate because I was trying to swim against it. Luckily for me I was with my friend who is very strong and knows about swimming. He kept saying “just swim sideways” I was trying but I couldn’t, I was stuck between waves just pulling me in. I started yelling to my friend to come help me. So he finally did, pulled me and I was able to use leg power on the sand and swim out of it. I can imagine how scary your situation must’ve been and with your little sister, my goodness, thank God you guys were helped too.

I will never again go into the Gulf of Mexico, but this is a great video for folks who do. Very well put together.

Has nothing to do with the Gulf of Mexico. It occurs in any ocean.

I think they mean that they specifically had a bad experience in the Gulf of Mexico, dude. Everyone has their own story. Chill.

I have searched but I can't find this video with English Subtitles, can anyone link it to me please?
Additionally @Surf Life Saving Australia, do you have, or can you make these safety videos with an AULSAN (Australian Sign Language) interpreter? I am a teacher of the Deaf and I want to teach my students about water safety and having a video with an interpreter would be fabulous. :)

There is an option to turn on English subtitles which is part of the native UA-cam website, if you check next to the settings feature of the UA-cam video you can click on the CC button and see the subtitles. Unfortunately these ones are auto generated but having watched them myself, I found it was fairly accurate (except where it kept thinking the narrator was saying 'rib' not 'rip'.) Hope it helps in the meantime though!

I got into a rip current at Hawaii and it pulled me out like super far before it dissipated and I had to do a very slow and easy breast stroke my way back to shore for 45 minutes, constantly adjusting my trajectory. It gets old real quick
