I think you could apply this to wanting new partners as well. People lusting after others while still in a relationship. When got into Buddhism and martial arts I started training myself to ignore desires until I forget about them. I can control most of my wishes very well now, living a strict and simple life without consuming anything I don't need or highly value. But the problem is, I don't enjoy going shopping or receiving gifts anymore, I don't enjoy going out with friends as I could do something more useful in that time. I kind of became like a soldier in my mind. So I think it's very important to find a middle way and still honor our desires. We're not in a war or in dept all the time, so enjoying what we can do should be a valid option as well🙏🏻

I really dislike how people says "Shopping is my therapy" or "my starbucks coffee gives me happiness". No, happiness and pleasure are not the same thing. You can experience pleasure all day long and still feel empty by the end of the day. They are doping themselves to stay away from pain rather than purchasing these things for an authentic happiness or a real need. It´s not bad to give yourself nice things, but pursuing pleasure 24/7 leads to be slave to the things that give those nice feelings and distract yourself of the uncomfortable ones, and because of that, you don´t know how to deal and cure your pain, because you don´t longer know where it comes from. Knowing where your pain comes from and allowing yourself to feel it, it´s the first step to transform it and heal

At a certain point in my life I had nothing, I learned to be happy with the simple things; eating well, sleeping well and not wanting anything.
I needed things but I let the universe bring them to me. For example I needed a new door for my house which I could not afford to buy new.
One day I crossed a man that had one outside his house. He gave it to me. Sometimes it’s just easier to let things happen instead of searching for ways to MAKE things happen. Or to WANT these things to happen.
Just an experience I hope that everybody can find peace ✌️

The problem with philosophy as a job is that philosophy is something we should all practice in our daily lives to better understand ourselves and the world around us.
Philosophy as a structured profession is a fraud, because paying someone to tell you what to think is antithetical to the discipline.

Exactly. When I have an intense desire for something of great cost I clear my mind and imagine that I already bought it and go through the pleasure of owning it and all that those feelings mean. Most of the time I realize that I want the item because I believe it will provide something that is not relevant to its purpose like people liking me solely because I own it, Most of the time in the end I realize that I didnt want the item at all, I just wanted the status I believed it would bring...and I lose the desire for it. But if after going through this mental exercise I still find a need for it then I start giving it some real consideration.

I think its important to note when considering this, that even the monks that devoted their lives to removing desire from themselves ultimately never really managed to do it, even with employing all kinds of strategies to try and be rid of desires. I think in the end, the most important thing is to cultivate how you think about yourself and your desires, and where they come from. And dont be hard on yourself for your wants. These desires are there for a reason, you just need to figure out why is it there and if thats the course to get to the underlying goal. And sometimes it is.

Also, it is important to separate one's own needs from the needs that were advertised. Advertised needs are those with a lack of individuality (though it looks like they have it), which means it is for the masses, not for individuals. Thus, individualism means expression of oneself and understanding one''s own needs, not the needs of others. And it doesn't mean that one should be a jerk. Helping others may be one's own need, why not?

Very, very thought-provoking. I'm currently struggling with the pain of "lacking", due to hardship. Normally, I'm well equipped to deal with life's ups and downs.. but I'm currently being touched a little again by that "black dog" (anxiety/depression).. brought on, I think, by the extreme stress I've suffered in the past year, and the past 3 months in particular. So when I saw the title of this video, my mind immediately reminded me of a quote I invented some years back: "Isn't the absence of pain what happiness makes?!" My quote touched on what you're talking about.. you take it much farther.. thank you for that. From studying the Buddhism and Taoism, I've known for some time that desires and attachments often lead to suffering. Currently, dealing again a bit with the black dog - I just want the pain to stop. Yeah. I'm coming at this from a slightly different direction, tempered by my mental state.. but listening to these words helps nevertheless. I find personally that when I'm experiencing hardship and suffering, moral support - such as offered by this video message - is most welcome, helpful, and soothing. So, thank you, Einzelgänger.

Suffering is the amount of hours that we have to go to work every week where sometimes you're working 60 or 70 Plus hours a week, so we gamble, emotionally eat and have lots of sex to numb the pain of being tired all the time and not having enough energy to pursue social life family life exercise or just to relax and kick back.

OMG, this is wisdom, it should be taught in elementary, and it should be encouraged in our families... This video puts into the right words the feeling I've always had towards the capitalist culture and the slavery system in which we waddle and crawl. I give my lifetime to a company so that company gives me currency, a currency that I will use to make someone else my slave for a few moments.. call it the restaurant chef, the store guy, a mechanic... you pay them to do things you don't want or don't know how to do. At that moment we accept that our lifetime is sellable, and we can measure how much a year of our life is worth... this is so fucking wrong in so many ways.

I came to the conclusion that I would train to avoid consumerism the most I can, trying to live with the less without being affected, but I'm conflicted with this way of thinking because I might think like that because I'm lazy to get things I desire. So I love stoicism, and philosophies like the one presented in this video but I fear that this kind of mindset makes me just lazy to act. In other hand why would I act, since I don't know what I'm here for? As of right now I don't have drives in life, but I find value in virtue and strenght in solitude, trying to avoid the vices, instant pleasures etc... keep myself pure. Marcus Aurelius said, "you're not here to stay in your bed, wake up and do your duty of man", but he was an Emperor, he had a duty, big duty, but me I live in a world where it seems that there's no duty.

"A little bit of self inflicted discomfort or the right kind of stress in the day goes a long way." Over the years, I've come to feel as though it's why doing a great workout, one which skyrockets the heart rate and gets a good sweat on is proper meaningful. And getting out of a nice warm bed and jumping into a freezing cold shower where you're solely focussed on your own breathing is a wonderful kick up the arse to start the day. Society as we know it moves at like a thousand mile an hour, and it rarely slows, and never stops. But it's the little things that helps us to step back from that crap for a short while and just gather our own positive thoughts 😉

Maybe , when it comes down to it , love is not about chasing another human being . Maybe , love is about chasing yourself . Chasing your growth . Chasing your hope
Maybe love is about learning how to be gentle with yourself , how to believe in the way the Universe has removed certain people from your life . And maybe love grows within you when you learn how to trust your own heart , when you learn how to walk away from the things that have not cared for it
Maybe , love is about learning how to accept that sometimes even beautiful things end , that sometimes the timing isn't right . And maybe love is about learning that endings aren't something to regret ; maybe it is about learning how to let go , how to appreciate the things you experienced at the hands of caring that were real and hopeful and light in a world that sometimes fails to be soft . Maybe , love is about learning how to be alone . Maybe it is about learning how to wake up in the middle of the bed . How to make just one cup of coffee in the morning . How to hold your own heart , how to take up space . Maybe there is beauty to be found in falling in love with your growth , in learning how to stop filling voids with other human beings , and instead , in slowly having the courage to heal those voids yourself .
Maybe love is about learning how to be proud of the person you are stretching into , is about embracing the beauty and the depth that exists in trying for something while you are here . And maybe within that , love is about honoring your heart . Maybe the truest , and most honest , extension of love exists in the way you learn how to love yourself , exists in the way you learn how to be compassionate towards the parts of yourself , and your journey , that no one else claps for
Maybe , love exists in the way you fight to be here , in the way you crash your heart into this world . Maybe , love is about you - being your own strength , being your own safe place . Maybe , when it comes down to it , love is about finally learning how to give yourself the same love you so beautifully give to others . Maybe , love is about embracing the person you are becoming , and believing in your heart , on even your hardest of days
