When they built the canals here in the UK they often used herds of cattle or sheep to puddle (compact) the clay.😮

Good point. That is why the roller Adam was using is called a "sheepsfoot roller" - they were specifically trying to replicate that effect with a machine.
As crazy as this sounds growing up we made two farm ponds to irrigate out of ... we also had a huge hog operation. We would put an electric fence up around the pond for a few months and allow the hogs to pack root and lay in the clay. Some 30 years later those ponds are still in use today
Forgive me but you didn’t do a core Test before you even brought equipment and to build upon?
I'm impressed with the amount of slope that pad foot roller can handle, as well as how well you operated it.

Adam, it looks like you and Ralph did a nice job placing the 'new' clay in the bottom of the pond. I know it took some extra clay but it will be nice to see the pond full and not leaking. Blessings to you.

I spent most of last summer building a trash cell in a land fill. 3’ of clay layed down in 6” lifts. Myself and a second person both on sheep’s foot compactors compacted close to 8 acres of slopes daily. Took about 10-12 hours to make one circle. According to plans it had to have 10 passes. Only smooth drum a pass every 100’ for the inspector to do compaction test. Yes it was a challenge to get and keep material wet otherwise like you said no compaction. So I’m sure your past this at that point. But if it’s wet but not soup. Roll it in. After several passes. You’ll see the material change. Oh the amount of clay we hauled in on cat 745 dump trucks was insane. 2500 yards plus a day for months.
Third time is the charm. You have been through a lot with this pond. I hope this is the final fix. I've enjoyed watching you build it and all of your other projects.

I'm learning a lot about pond construction from letsdig18. Chris relies on clay to build beautiful dams. I used to wonder what he was doing when he would strip away a mountain of ground and dig up some other places and move the earth there then compact it.
This is a very interesting subject and I really enjoy watching.
I actually started watching this channel when you began construction work on your pond and I'm interested in how it has turned out but not in a negative way.

Chris, liked most pros digs test holes to find the clay on site next to the pond and then digs borrow pits to remove it to build dams and roads. He then fills in the pits with the substandard soil. This is far cheaper than hauling in the clay from a far. Of course, you can only do this if there is adequate clay on site.

Adam, I just watched Outdoor with the Morgans and he was talking about cutting some firewood into 12-inch lengths for people that have solo stoves or small fire pits. Mike thought it was a good idea to have at least a couple of cords on hand for people that have those and want to burn wood recreationally. Just passing this along in case you didn't see it. I still think you should have used pond liners from the start. They come in different lengths and widths and are heat sealed at the seams. Guaranteed leak proof.
If your pond still leaks next year, you know I'll say "I told you so".

I loved the footage that most people never get (sourcing and a transport). Thank your you use of time lapse on the transport and the multiple views on truck loading (also the count of buckets). A note about why the trucks were not fully loaded would have been good (expect that it was weight based road limits). Also, I bet that I’m not the only one who is wondering why the last bit of pond was not treated to clay and compression. Again…this was excellent coverage and professional level editing. Big kudos on utilization of the repurposed shale and both spots look amazing.
When you were talking about the sheets when using the smooth surface roller, I wondered if there was a similar function created under the new clay. I’ve seen operators freshly scratch the last lift before starting the next one depending on temperate and other factor, when coming back the next day.
Final comment…I figured that you would have done the clay seal in lifts to merge and seal twice. A mistake that operators that think it is just about putting dirt in position then sealing the top, is that you can only compress the soil 6-10 inches and everything under that serves as fill. This method would have cost you an extra day of rental on the sheeps foot roller but money well spent.
For compacting sand, a vibrating smooth drum is the tool. Put fines in the soil, then you go to rubber tire rollers or padfoot rollers depending on the fines content. Pure clay, a true sheepsfoot is best. I haven’t tested or seen a compaction curve on that soil, but none of it looks wet enough to me for really good compaction for lowest permeability… walk those feet out til they ride pretty much on top!
The moisture content of the clay looked good to me. You don't want the clay wet, you want it just moist enough to stick together, but dry enough so it doesn't stick to the roller and fills in the gaps between the feet. When that happens, you should wait for the soil to dry out.

Its not uncommon for silt to become problematic.
Every seven years or so farm ponds need to be drained and dug out.

Adam, I think most of us have been had by someone claiming to be something their weren't. When I was younger I would give them the benefit of the doubt, but the older I get the more likely I am to call out someones bullshit. I think it's safe to say that you've learned a very valuable and expensive lesson with this pond build. One day, you'll be sitting by that pond laughing about all of this.
Soil and sub-soil conditions can change pretty quick. Our home sits on blue clay and we only had a few small granite boulders/rocks when digging our 2300 sq ft foundation. 100 yards west, a totally different story, tons of rock, a gravel vein sitting on top of a shallow clay and stone, base, then, shale.

He did no tests he just hired a guy and started digging. UA-cam money, not his, so he spent it like a drunken politician with other peoples money. LOL
Have you considered using the compactor on the fill around the house and the wood area to help reduce bogging when you start working on that area.

Hope it works for you Adam, but i was hoping for a better looking product of clay, good clay will dig out of the ground in a clump even dry, and will form the shape of the bucket while digging out, that was pretty loose looking stuff.
Exactly, this was not even close to pond grade clay.

It may be a geographic thing but where I'm at here in NH a tri axle of clay is $280 delivered and I'd be able to make pottery with it if I wanted to. Gray dense sticky CLAY, looks a lot different than what your getting.
That was definitely not genuine pond grade clay.
I've hauled plenty of clay into numerous brickyards here in Pennsylvania back in the day and it had the consistency of Play-Doh. Very dangerous to dump as it would stick in the bed.
Good clay in Pennsylvania comes out of coal mines, as it lays in pockets deep below the surface. And yes, mostly gray in color.
I hope this works out for him but not too sure. Especially on the area he let dry out before he started trying to compact it.

As for the extra 20 “loads” of clay, to be honest, those were partial loads he was hauling. I understand that was on purpose, though.
Your guy's clay location looks like my front yard did when we re-did our front drive and yard. Piles of clay with a light brown pond in the middle! 😂 The soil around our house is nearly solid clay.
I seem to remember that you put a bottom drain in your pond in connection with the overflow standpipe. Why didn’t you use that to drain the pond and allow it to stay dry for this operation?
As 1 pond gets repaired, it looks like another gets dug

There was no where on your property that had adequate clay subsoil so that a borrow pit couldn't have been dug rather than the much more expensive method of hauling in clay? Is there a video showing test holes being dug?

Those divets of the roller are creating thin spots in the liner. Need to blade it off one final time to have a consent liner thickness
