    This is amazing. It's such a shame that the expertise and knowledge required to create this effect will never be noticed or properly appreciated by most people. But then, it wouldn't be such a great practical effect if it was noticeable. Great work from an invisible wizard!

    Berton, other than my boss Richard, Leslie has always been one of the most articulate effects technicians to listen to♥
    Back in the 80s, while using a local "white Fly Ash" in Sydney, I found that by sieving-out all the tiny spherules (under 25 microns) we were left with this beautifully slippery/heavy clear powder. We used that whenever we found Q-cells to be too fluffy/floaty for a waterfall or backlit-foundry scene.
    I had never ever thought to check our sandblaster!
    Loving these!

    Ah! I remember the practical FX for the Naboo waterfall cliff model where salt was used. My question was how they controlled humidity so the salt wouldn't clump, heh heh. Glass beads certainly improve on both for the camera.

    On the corner of Cherokee Ave on Hollywood Blvd, is the 82yr old shop that has attracted memorabilia collectors and moviemakers for decades. The historic Larry Edmunds Bookshop can be seen in films like 'Once Upon A Time in Hollywood. In the wake of coronavirus, it closed when Los Angeles ordered all non-essential businesses to close. Owner Jeffrey Mantor worried his shop won't survive. He started a GoFundMe to raise support from the community. It's already topped $26,000 dollars but that might not be enough. The shop's only income is orders online, that Mantor wraps and sends himself.

    Again, something that came from a supernatural comedy and used for decades. It is just amazing on what they did to create these effects before CG. The problem with CG is all of what is seen is just an artist interpolation, nothing more. The thing about practical effects it that it deals in reality. When CG artists do CG I do enjoy their work because all that is very imaginary. Problem is, instead of examing something like an explosion even on YT they just imagine how large an explosing will be. For instance, I do not if most people know, but plastic explosives do not cause fire when that compound is detnated. In order for Hollywood FX people to make there to be fire in the explosion, one thing they do is soak the plastic in gasoline. The reason for using plastic explosives in any usage is due to the reality of how safe that stuff is to transport and use. You can drop it on the ground from the top of the Sears tower in Chicago and it will not explode like dinomite, you know TNT. Also, like guys in Vietnam, they would burn it to make coffee or warm their food. It is a multi usage thing. :)

      Almost all interviews were done by me between 2010 and 2012. Three recent interviews were done by the people filming themselves with my questions and sending me their interview footage to edit. This is all from my Sense of Scale documentary. An ongoing project about miniature effects model makers and their work.

    He’s giving himself far too much credit than he should. Derek Meddlings used salt to simulate a waterfall in Moonraker (and that was in 1979).

    • @piercefilm
      @piercefilm  2 роки тому +1

      Yes, salt! And Raise the Titanic also used salt. But the point is that salt is cube shaped. Glass beads are little orbs. Much more fluid looking and better than salt! Meddings was a master, but even he didn't try that approach..
