I grew up on the 60s Spiderman cartoon and read the 70s and 80s comic . So for me this Spiderman is the closest to that , other then a few things like the Web shooters and the Green Goblin . Aunt May is perfect . Jonah Jameson perfect.

Growing up as a Spider Man fan and religiously watching the 90s animated series, this movie was a big deal for me. I was 10 and this and X-Men 2 years earlier was my first big event movies of my life. The movie was a big deal obviously. Saw it in the theater and loved it. The film nowadays, it still holds up for me. It’s not one of my top favorite superhero films anymore because since 2002 I’ve seen superhero films even better, but I still highly enjoy this film and it’s still my 2nd favorite spider man movie out of all of them. The only thing that doesn’t hold up for me is Kirsten Dunst. I don’t think her acting is the problem and no offense to her but Mary Jane to me is suppose to be a supermodel drop dead gorgeous type of girl and not bitchy and Kirsten isn’t that. We agree there but the rest of the film we agree to disagree.

How about this for a "Spider-Man" film? Let's say it's made in 1984 and it's directed by Steven Spielberg. It stars Scott Baio as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, Ally Sheedy as Mary Jane, Emelio Estevez as Goblin, William Zabka (Johnny from "The Karate Kid") as Peter's bully, & Charles Bronson as Peter's dad.

The way you feel about Toby Maguire in this movie is how I feel about Russel Crowe in Les Mis. There's so many actors they could've gotten to play Javert, and yet, they went with Russel Crowe, whose nothing more but a lifeless robot. Because I do not like Russel Crowe as an actor. Russel Crowe is generally better suited for subdued acting roles.
He tried giving that in Gladiator, not just because it was his strength in acting, but because he wanted to portray Maximus as someone who was less concerned with grabbing attention and more concerned with doing the right thing.
The thing is, I don't like this trait for Maximus, because it makes his character relatively static throughout the movie. It makes "Gladiator" a cathartic movie about a man whose morals are put to the ultimate test, rather than a satisfying revenge movie.

I used to love this film. I saw it in theater on opening weekend and I watched it countless times as a kid. That being said, as I got older the more I saw the film, the flaws became way more evident. And now, the film honestly is a below average disappointing comic book blockbuster. I also don't like the 50's or 60's aesthetic or vibe of the film. I also don't care for Tobey Maguire as Peter/Spidey, and as much as I like Sam Raimi his whole take on this film is cheesy with a capital C. And I don't like using that word either. But this film honestly fits that term so well. I hated how the Goblin was represented with the Power Rangers villain suit and Dafoe is a great actor when he is reined in. But this is not it. And it shows how Dafoe is a total cringe lord when he is let loose on the screen. The action other than a few bits here and there is lackluster. For a multi million dollar film it seems like it's almost a cable movie in terms of its size and scope(It has not aged well at all.) Raimi's direction is slick and stylish and from a technical standpoint it's great. But it's very hollow when it comes to the cornball tone.
I disagree about Elfman's score being forgettable though. I still think it's a great score. Forgettable to me is the scores for Homecoming or the TASM films. I thought Elfman's score was one of the few things that still held up with this film other than the spider-suit and some of the visual effects. Rosemary Harris was such a a sweetheart as Aunt May, Cliff Robertson was the perfect cinematic Uncle Ben, J.K's J.J was a riot, Macho Man's cameo was a lot of fun, and James Franco was solid too. But Tobey McGuire was way too dopey and Opie for Peter or Spider-Man, DaFoe was a laughable joke as the Goblin with zero intimidation factor, and Kirsten Dunst's Mary Jane was a wet sock and had zero chemistry with Tobey. It's just one of those films for me that once the nostalgia wears off it just leaves a sour taste in my mouth. I also grew up reading 90's Spider-Man comics and this just isn't the Spider-Man I personally prefer or love. And the closest I have seen to that Spidey to date is honestly TASM 2. The movie was a mess. But Spider-Man in that film was wise cracking(Genuinely funny) and was a totally believable hero and he was actually cool. The Spider-Man in this film is not cool. He's far too nerdy and closer to Clark Kent than anything else. And that's not who Peter is. I honestly don't get the pass this film gets to this day from Spider-Man fans. It doesn't hold up. The web crumbles away and it falls plummeting to the ground every time I watch it.

You don't like the word: "Cheesy". That's sorta like how I don't like the word: "Pretentious".
And just so you don't think I'm weird, I'm being serious. I really don't like the word: "Pretentious". Mainly because it's a word that I feel is often misused. Most people use that word to describe movies that they feel have too many ideas. But the actual definition of pretentious is: "Attempting to impress by affecting greater importance, talent, culture, etc. than is actually possessed." And really the only movie I can think of that fits that definition is: "Pocahontas".

Speaking of the finale. I always felt it was disappointing. The whole Batman Forever 2.0 thing with Mary Jane and a tram full of people, and then the incredibly lame final fight between Spider-Man and the Green Goblin where Spidey spends most of the fight getting his ass beat. Yeah. That's what people want to see in the finale. Spider-Man, the lead hero getting his ass kicked for 98 percent of the final fight. At least have Spidey get more licks in at the very least. He throws the brick wall down and maybe punches Goblin once and that was it.

Well, that's too bad since they were done by: "Sony Imageworks", who in the same year this movie came out, animated Stewart, Maragalo, and The Falcon in Stewart Little 2, and then created their very first animated short: "The Chub-Chubs", which was prior to screenings of Men in Black 2.

I like how you're showing all the behind the scenes stuff from the first Spider-Man movie. That's why I love DVD and Blu Ray. You won't see any of this extra stuff on streaming. As for the movie, it is pretty dated but everything will be dated eventually, that's how time works. In the extra features they actually had a practical Green Goblin costume that was comic accurate. But they scrapped it for that stupid power suit. And I get why you don't like Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker. He kinda went over board with the emotions, but I think that was the point. I'll definitely take Tobey Maguire over Iron Boy Tom Holland any day.

I do enjoy this movie, It's definitely not for everyone and I do see where you are coming from, when I think of spider-man I think of the 90s cartoon incarnation but with that being said I do like the film. It's very 2000s but I kind of appreciate it even if not everything holds up and the some terrible moments that can be pointed out, I like Maguire in the film yea he's not the definitive version of the character but I do like his portrayal in this and the second film, He was the perfect nerd especially in the beginning, I'd have to disagree on this being the best costume of all the films, to me the best costume is the one from TASM 2, granted that's the worst spider-man film but I do think that's the best costume put to film. Willem Dafoe I thought was good, granted the costume lets him down but I like the performance.
Now I'm not saying this is the best superhero film ever, heck it's not even one of my favorites, not the best spider-man film as I think Spider-Man 2 and Spiderverse are the two best and in terms of the paving the way for superhero films after their decline in the late 90s (aside from Blade) I like this film a lot more than X-Men from 2000, I actually like this film where that film is just there for me. Nevertheless good job on the review Matt

  • @capsulon445

Personally I enjoy this film, yeah its cheesy but for the first Spider-man it needed to take cues from its roots and not having that 60s aesthetic would be like Superman the movie not having a 30s aesthetic , even though it takes place in the 70s. I do agree however that Kristen Dunst was the weakest character in this trilogy and the concept art for the Goblin suit were a lot better than the one we got and should have used them for 3. As for the tone of the sequels they really needed to get out of that 50/60 aesthetic and explore other eras of Spider-man like the 70s, 80s, and 90s comics in order for the characters (especially Peter and MJ) to evolve.
P.S. Organic webbing was for the time canon in the main Marvel Universe, making its debut in 2004, the same year Spider-man 2 was released, however it was taken away due to the infamous 2007 story line One More Day (also know as the story where SPIDER-MAN BEING A DUMB ASS BY IN MAKING A DEAL WITH THE DEVIL TO SELL HIS MARRIAGE TO SAVE HIS AUNT!), which ironically debut during the same year as the release Spider-man 3. Yeah 2007 was a horrible year for Spider-man fans.

I respectfully disagree. I always did & still do adore this Spiderman & it's sequel. Although I completely agree that Tobey Maguire was definitely 'Meh'. There probably could've been better people for the role.

Haha 😄. The fx are 90 % practical in the fight scenes so sorry if they look too real that they suck. And ofc they also use live action footage for the swinging scenes
