I can't even begin to tell you how massively popular this was back in the day. It was a huge hit.
yes it was
And With Every Age Group.
I know right,
"Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer" comes to mind.
@@breckrichardson390 Yes,, By Elmo & Patsy.
One time on the live Academy Awards a streaker ran across the stage wearing only his shoes as actor David Niven was at the podium. After the initial shocked silence and shrieks of laughter at the entirely unexpected sight more commonly seen on a University Campus David Niven quipped, "This is the only laugh this man will ever get, and he got it by stripping down and showing everyone his shortcomings." At which point the entire theater erupted in raucous laughter! One of the best one liners ever on live TV, and we have had the 7 second delay ever since.
David Niven was cool.
Yes I remember when that happened. Shows you how old I am
I remember that
The 7-second-delay came about due to lots of such things happening in a smaller timeframe, and the usual overeaction ensued. Those were the days....sigh...🍀🙂✌
Remember It Well.
Streaking was huge back then and so was this song! Simpler time …
we even had streakers at my high school graduation in 1978
@@ArgonTheAware 77 graduate! Loved those days!!!!!!
Or flashing...
I remember the streaking craze in the mid 1970s, when this song was No. 1 in the UK charts in 1974. Streakers would try to disrupt major sporting events like football and cricket matches. Producing some iconic news report photos.
They used to show them in all their glory on the tele back then as well lol
I don't remember what year (definitely in the 70s) but as a kid my dad took me to the time trials for the Indianapolis 500. This was during the height of the streak phase. Streakers were breaking out every 15 minutes. One guy climbed up to the top of one of the tall flag poles above the infield stands. A whole army of streakers broke out in the pit area. It was bizarre almost beyond description.
Spring of ‘74 at our college there was a huge streak night in the center of three dormitories and everyone had a great view from their open windows, and of course there were hundreds of people outside, but the campus police finally shut it down.
Equivalent to all the real stupid things that UA-camrs do in 2022.
They had a streaker during the telecast of the Academy Awards in the early 1970s.
Thank you so much for watching and enjoying this classic music video of mine. The song was originally released in 1974 and is the biggest selling hit of my career. This video was made later in the early 90s and revamped its success. It was a blast to make this video. I appreciate you checking it out! Boogity Boogity!
My dad would have a sit for hours, listening to every song on every album of yours. Those are some of the best memories of my lifetime. We’ve never laughed so hard!! Love you Ray.
Hey Ray! As kids in the 70s we had this on a 45 record and would play it and giggle endlessly. Thanks for the great memories!
I still have your "I Have Returned" album on cassette tape! When I was growing up in the 80s, I memorized all the words and sang along on road trips to help pass the time. Thank you for being such an important part of my childhood.
For all the fun songs Ray Stevens sings, he had a jaw-dropping beautiful song called, "Everything Is Beautiful". You'd never know that it was HIM.
"It's Me Again, Margaret", "Sittin' Up With The Dead" & "Gitarzan" are other great Ray Stevens novelty songs.
Blue Cyclone
Haircut song
Pirate song
Streaking stated in the Spring of 1974. By the time Ray Stevens wrote and recorded this song the fad had faded away. But, shockingly, this song made it to #1 and, at least briefly, revived the fad! The funniest of Stevens' comedy songs was called "Gitarzan", recorded in 1969.
Guitarzan was huge too. My favorite Ray Stevens song.
@Zippy Knowitall When I was a kid, we had a tape filled with songs like those. It wasn't quite the same, but that old song "I like Bread and Butter" was on it too.
And another was 'Along came Jones'
@Zippy Knowitall Camp Granada otherwise known as 'Hello Mother, hello Father'
Oh man, Gitarzan was such a huge song when it came out. We kids thought it was funny as hell every time it came on the radio.
OMG! I am so happy you guys did this track. Ray Steven's is so stinking funny. Please do the track and video for "the Mississippi Squirl Revival. You will fall off the couch laughing!
He also does some serious tracks too that are amazing.
Love you guys. Your channel is awesome.
I half agree. He was stinking.
Mississippi Squirrel Revival is the best!
@@rhondarocca9855 lol. For sure!
Mississippi squirrel revival is his best work by far.
I always preferred the original versions of "Ahab The Arab"; "It's Me Again Margaret"; "Guitarzan"; and the Christmas hit "Bad Little Boy"...over "Mississippi Squirrel Revival".😁😎
Hahaha childhood!.... Mississippi squirrel revival was great too
And it's me again, Margaret 🤣😂
🐿
This was huge back in the 70s and Ray had other hits "Everything is Beautiful" and a comedy hit about the Shrine Convention. Ray Stevens was like a Royal Jester.
You want to listen to "The Mississippi Squirrel Revival."
Still is.
My dad and I saw a streaker at the San Francisco Symphony in 1976-ish. Right there in the lobby, running in circles with a crowd around him. Totally crazy 70s fad. I was about ten.
I fully endorse women streaking whenever possible.
Check out Guitarzan" by Ray Stevens and "They're Coming to Take Me Away" by Loudon Wainwright III
Brad & Lex, you’ll love his “Everything Is Beautiful”!! (a real song, not like what you just did.)
And "Misty"
Still one of my favorite uplifting songs
Yup probably his best song
Yes , absolutely Everything is beautiful is such a amazing song . I remember Playing that song after the tragedy of the Newton mass shooting with all those precious little kids and teachers . Always cry listening to it .❤️🙏😢
@@robert-ef8qv Get a grip man. That was a complete hoax.
When i was young (the 70’s) my friend and i was sitting on the porch and one of the high schoolers went streaking by. The had “streaked” through the high school and down the block to his home. He became the coolest dude on the block. 🤣
Streaking was all the rage in the mid-70s. There was scarcely a sporting event in the country that wasn't disrupted by someone streaking. It still happens, occasionally, today, but the mid-70s is where it all began.
My own short streaking career began and ended in late 1975. Our French teacher was late to class one day and we were all just sitting around waiting in our 11 year-old peer groups, when someone dared me to streak around the classroom. It only lasted about 20 seconds but the girls seemed highly amused by it all. I got my clothes back on just before the teacher arrived and nobody spilt the beans, so I got away with it!
Those were the days!!
As a kid in the 70s I always got hyped when it came on the radio!! 😆😆
There was *no video* though! Not as far as I remember ever seeing. I think this video is a remake or something.
And streaking was a thing in the 70s too, sort of a left-over from the 60s I guess with all the hippies getting naked.
Yeah, I prefer the original cut...this one's not as quick and exciting.
Ray Stevens released a VHS tape of videos in the 80s to some of his more popular songs that had been released pre-MTV.
I was alive when this came out, and you have to understand the CONTEXT of the times. There were a lot of streakers shocking the nation, it was like the cold bath challenge before there was Internet of social media. A rash of streaking incidents seized the attention of the nation... and this song came out, and then even more public streaking happened.
LOL, he just played several different parts. A lot of guys in my high school went streaking thru our football or basketball games. This song just cracked us all up so much.
Ray Stevens - The Mississippi Squirrel Revival is some next level funny. its worth a listen if you want a good laugh
Ray Stevens was a HUGE artist in the 1960s and early '70s, known mostly for these novelty-style records. But two of his very best songs were not novelties. 1970's #1 song "Everything Is Beautiful" But for my money, his best song was "Mr. Businessman" from 1968. Definitely worth a listen. His other novelty songs were great, too. "The Streak" was probably his biggest (a #1 hit in 1974). But check these out: "Jeremiah Peabody's Polyunsaturated Quick-Dissolving Fast-Acting Pleasant-Tasting Green and Purple Pills" (1960), "Ahab the Arab" (1962), "Guitarzan" (1969), and "Along Came Jones" (1969). Two others that were noteworthy: "Unwind" (1968) and "Sunday Mornin' Comic' Down" (1969). Then in 1975, he kind of rose from the ashes and released a song that might have been thought of more as a song for Nat "King" Cole than for a country artist, but Ray Stevens proved 'em all wrong with his top five hit, "Misty." After that, Ray Stevens pretty much disappeared from mainstream top 40 radio and found whatever success he enjoyed in country music. But his chart success was fleeting at best after 1975. But during that period between about 1961 and 1975, Ray Stevens was a bona fide star in the music business. If I were to direct you to just two of his songs, I would point you to "Ahab the Arab" and "Mr. Businessman" to get a sense of just how versatile he's been.
Somebody actually streaked across the stage at the Oscars when this song was popular
Hey Brad and Lex, another Ray Stevens song you should react to is "The Mississippi Squirrel Revival"
My friends and I were starting our first day of high school back in 1974. As we get off the bus, we see a bunch of older kids streaking across the school grounds when my friend Barry recognizes his old babysitter Karen as one of the girls. We never saw anyone streak again, but we never forgot about that day. Wild times back in the seventies.
Check out "Mississippi Squirrel Revival", "It's Me Again Margaret", "Southern Air" to name a few.
Streaking was actually a huge fad when I was a kid. Sometimes it even happened at big sport events. Think of it as what people did before there was an internet for hashtag challenges
Ray Stevens is famous for his nutty, comical music. this song "the streak" released in '74. Streaking became a rage in the mid 70's. His first was "ahab the arab" in '62; Mississippi squirrel revival; Shriners Convention; , and a few other comical ones. Then in 1970 he released a very nice song called "everything is beautiful".
During the times where a streaker showed up at AWARD shows, Olympics, football field, NASCAR or where a news report, sporting event was live. Ray Stevens did a lot of comedic songs during the 70's
Yeah, streaking was actually a rather common thing in the 70s - at sporting and other public events, colleges and sometimes just because. It WAS weird, but funny.
Ray Stevens has done a number of really funny songs.
When I was young we had all the crazy songs like this. My Dinga Ling, Hello Muddah, Hello Faddah, They're Coming to Take me Away and Disco Duck just to name a few.
Lol. The "Hello Marget" song just makes me ROFLOL. It's hilarious. And Disco Duck by Rick Dees? The weirdest and hilarious track!
On the flip side of the 45 They're Coming to Take Me Away it's done backwards!
@@dianafrost936 lol. I didn't know that. That's epic.
I love Ray. I think you guys should listen to most of his stuff. But first I think should be "Everything is Beautiful" and "Along Came Jones". The last one along with "The Mississippi Squirrel Revival" and "It's Me Again, Margaret" were me favorites as a kid.
Havent watched the video Yet but want say that Ray Stevens is and will continue to be My Fave Comedy Singer while he does have some serious songs like "Everything is Beautiful" and "Misty" his Best songs are funny as all get out
AFTER WATCHING EDIT:
I love watching yall react to songs I grew up listening to. My Dad and I used to belt out the words of this song every time it came on the radio lol am so happy yall liked it.
a few of rays to check out:
The Mississippi Squirrel Revival
It's Me Again Margret
Where Do My Socks Go (When I put them in the Dryer} -This One just pure Silliness and its Great-
And let's not forget Bridget the Midget (The Queen of the Blues)
The 46th Academy Awards ceremony is perhaps best remembered as the ceremony in which a streaker named Robert Opel ran across the stage naked while flashing a peace sign with his hand. In response, host David Niven jokingly quipped, "Isn't it fascinating to think that probably the only laugh that man will ever get in his life is by stripping off and showing his shortcomings?
My friend and I captured a streaker back in 1973! Dude ran into a restaurant that only had an entrance and exit on the same side of the bldg! I pulled my pickup up to the exit, and my friend went and held the entrance door so he couldn't get out. My friend was strong and trying as hard as he could the streaker panicked and ran through the restaurant several times before we decided to let him out! He was MAD! We laughed our butts off! Still talk about it to this day!😆😆😆😂😂
Streaking was a big thing in the mid-'70s. I was once at the beauty pageant for my high school, and several of the guys streaked through the auditorium; they had brown paper bags over their heads, but most of us knew who they were!
Hahaha
Some of my high school buddies tried to streak through a party once, but it was too crowded so they wound up just standing around in the crowd. I’ll never forget seeing the parents arrive at the door and seeing 5 naked guys in their kitchen.
Ray Stevens is a hilarious comedy songwriter. "Again the Arab," "Mississippi Squirrel Revival," "It's Me Again, Margaret," "Shriner's Convention," "Gitarzan," "Along Came Jones," these were all songs I heard growing up, from my dad's music collection.
I think you meant "Ahab The Arab".😁
@@willhorting5317 yea, apparently autocorrect doesn't like Ahab.
@@coreyz.2800 😁
Streaking was a big deal, ball games, any public event... And everyone was singing this song!!!
Ray Stevens has so many funny songs, he has quite the collection.
This was a phenomenon when it came out in the 70s! I was a kid and we had the 45 record. My brother played it so many times! I used to laugh and laugh as any kid would.
I know you only do requests from your lives but Mississippi Squirrel Revival by him is a must also.
Big deal in the day.. so fun...folks was streaking wverwhere...this is like aWeird Al parody. People call him the uncle of Weird al. But please react to his 1971 Grammy winner. . WVERYTHING IS BEAUTIFUL.. what a difference. Lovely and patriotic!
This song came out when I was a child, this was a time when people worked hard went to church and everyone helped one another. This was on the radio all the time and we sang together as a family in the car and my mom would laugh like crazy.
The Tonight show 1974, spring, with host Johnny Carson. His guest was English actor David Niven. Some guy streaked the stage on TV, they had to cut that part before broadcasting the tape later that night, but the event was still acknowledged. David Niven said , when asked what he thought of this, something like: "He was just showing off his short comings." that got as big a laugh as the streaker himself.
The academy awards broadcast had a streaker on live television in 1974 I think. Actor David Niven was about to present an award when a guy runs across stage “naked as a JayBird!” Hilarious!
Ray Stevens' Mississippi Squirrel Revival, It's Me Again Margaret.
My grandma had this whole special on VHS when I was little. I grew up watching this guy when I was over there.
I feel sorry for kids today. Life was GREAT in the "60"s thru the '90's. 💥💥💥👍🤪
This one takes me back to my childhood. If this one amused you try Mississippi Squirrel Revival also by Ray Stevens.
Ray Stevens does most of the voices in his funny songs. Very talented guy. My favorites are "The Shriners Convention", "The Ballad of the blue Cyclone 1 & 2", "The Do-Right family", "Surfin' U.S.S.R", "Guitarzan", "The Moonlight Special", "The Pirate song(I want to sing and dance)". Ray has so many songs. Then there's
"Ned Nostril & his South Seas paradise, put your Blues on Ice, cheap it twice the price band (icky, icky, ucky, ucky)". Yes, this is really the name of a song. He does a good imitation of Johnny Cash. Song just cracks me up!!!😂😂
Yep streaking was a thing back then lol. Its was also a great time for novelty song. Ray Stevens was one greats. Other songs Convoy, Monster Mash, Itsy bitsy the teeny weenie yellow polka dot bikini, Rubber Duckie just to name a few. Great reaction guys!
Streaking was in vogue back in the 70's, thank goodness there weren't cell phones. We didn't consider it streaking at the pool or beach, more like at football games or parades. Growing up in the 70's was wild!!
I'd be laying on the floor laughing 🤣
Streaking was huge in the 70's when this music came out. I was a kid it was a hit song they played it everywhere!
This song was SO timely back in the mid-70s when streakers were popping up everywhere, including the Academy Awards.
Ray is a super funny guy, an American treasure! He's known for his comedy, but he is actually a very talented pianist, and a very good singer.
Other "silly songs" to given a listen: Spiders & Snakes by Jim Stafford, Dead Skunk by Loudon Wainwright and Convoy by CW McCall
A 45 of Convoy was the first record i ever bought.
Sneaky Snake by Tom T Hall
Yes, Jim Stafford had some good ones too!
Round that list out with Energy Crisis by Dickie Goodman, Hot Rod Lincoln by Commander Cody & His Lost Planet Airmen, Disco Duck by Rick Dees, Ding-a-Ling by Chuck Berry, King Tut by Steve Martin and The Toot Uncommons & Funky Worm Ohio Players. What a time to be young. Loved Convoy & Dead Skunk
@@heatherbegs , Cow Patty!
He is a comedian known for funny stories like this that he sings. The squirrel got loose is hilarious.
The song was #1 on the Billboard chart for 3 weeks. I was a kid and this was huge.
I used to work with a woman who's family owned the grocery store in the beginning of that video. She said that video was a HUGE amount of fun to make, and that Ray was a great guy.
"The Streak" was a surprisingly big hit, spending three weeks at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, beginning May 18, 1974. In fact, it was the #8 song of 1974, according to Billboard's year-end survey.
Streaking in the 70’s was off the hook. People streaked at football games, World Series, you name it, they did it!
When this song was popular, so was streaking, for real! The ‘70’s were a crazy time!
I used to love this when I was kid. Ray had some other really fun songs/videos like Mississippi Squirrel, Sittin' Up With The Dead, It's Me Again Margaret.
This was a huge massive hit.. Back in the day. It was so long ago but i love the memories. Thanks guys
His Indian Love Call is gold.
My best friends oldest sister graduated in 1974(I think it was) and at the graduation they had 4 streakers run across the field. This song started a craze.
My dad took me to see Ray Stevens in Branson when I was a kid. My mom would call someone and say "It's me again Margaret" every time. I had a vhs tape and watched all the time. Lol
"We're goin streaking!" - Will Ferrell as Frank the tank in Old School.
Oh my goodness you're going down the Ray Stevens rabbit hole. He has some funny songs. This is the one that started everything. Yes the 70s were known for streakers like the one that ran across the stage during an award ceremony. ✌️
Streaking still happens occasionally but it was BIG in the early '70s. My freshman year in college there was a dirt field in front of the dorm. One night after a heavy rain about 10 or 20 people decided to use the mud like a slip and slide naked :-)
Streaking just fit in so well with the prevailing hippy counterculture of the time.
When I was in college streaking was a big thing. Tons of people did it... One time I was watching a swim meet all of a sudden the lights started flickering on and off and some guy ran out naked, climbed to the top of the high dive, dove off, swam the length of the pool got out and streaked out of the pool house!
Back in the early 70's we were at one of the few fast food restaurants "Burger Chef", when the students from the local college decided to streak. Plastered themselves against the windows right on the main street through town.
We had a streaker in our neighborhood. He was pretty fine. We did have them at sports events too. One of the things done in the 70s with no explanation. But it gave us a lot of laughs and blushes.
I laughed my pardon the pun butt off when Lex said The Brown Streak. 😂😂😂😂
Ray is great. It's Me Again Margaret, Sitting Up With the Dead, Everything is Beautiful
I remember seeing this at our high school in 1975. There was of them on bikes and one was a female. As one of them came around the turn (we were sitting in the middle of the track) his bike slid and he ended up about 20 from the vice principal. He was able to get out in time but it took at least 20 minutes to get the audience to stop laughing.
Ray Stevens was big in the 60’s & 70’s. He specialized in novelty songs which were big in the 70’s. He occasionally did serious country and pop songs. This song was a big hit as streaking was a big fad in the mid-70’s.
I grew up on Ray Stevens music, I used to have all his greatest hits on VHS tape
Y'all are a trip!
I think my favorite Ray Stevens song is "The Mississippi Squirrel Revival."
Now this is what we sing at karaoke nights love Ray Stevens
This is what we used to call a "novelty song". They were very popular during the 70's. Another good example is "There Coming To take Me Away" by Napoleon XIV. Although some folks who are "sensitive" may not get the joke.
A couple of good novelty songs were 'I've Never Met A Nice South African' and 'The Chicken Song' by Spitting Image!
God, this song is horrible. I hated it when I was a kid, and it hasn't improved with age. It's right up there with Afternoon Delight and Chevy Van- the worst of the worst.

You really need to check out the official video version of one called The Mississippi Squirrel Revival. Also for something a bit more serious, check out the official video for a song by Craig Morgan called This Ain't Nothin'. It is a great message for the times, given all that's going on. This song coming over the car radio speakers while sitting in the back seat with brother and sister. Mom and Dad would be grinning and laughing because us kids were cutting up so much.
