The Extra stage for Hollow Song of Birds came out yesterday, HSoB being the latest Touhou fangame in the long running line of fangames created by Ido en co.
They always release their Extra stages a couple of months later.
As always, the presentation, music and graphics are all very nice.
The Extra stage has a unique gimmick in that you use a rainbow orb.
With the rainbow orb you can choose two orbs from the seven normally available and then freely switch between them with the user key.
This actually works really well and it's quite fun to use. It also gives a lot more depth to the system, because now you want to optimize using two different shots at once. Kinda makes me wish this was in the main game too.
The white and black orbs are still available, for those who want to use them.
I picked red and orange. In the main game there was a split between whether red or orange was better, but with the rainbow orb you get the best of both world.
For those that don't remember, red sets enemies on fire and is in general really powerful. The shot on orange is really weak, but if you graze you get homing lasers that do a lot of damage.
In general I use orange when there are a lot of bullets to graze and switch to red when there are none.
Another difference is that the Extra stage doesn't have the normal bombs anymore, all your bombs are Z-Spells.
Visiting all the stages from the main game in the Extra stage is a neat idea.
You get a short condensed section of a stage and then move on, which makes for good pacing. The part where you shoot down is also quite unique.
Though I don't really like how a lot of the patterns are just rehashed from the main game without doing anything new or interesting with it.
The boss has a lot of varied and unique attacks, it's quite fun. All the various plates and vases also have a very satisfying 'crunch' to them when you destroy them.
Overall a pretty nice Extra stage.

For the final the bosses' hitbox can't actually hit you if you stay at the bottom of the screen. You can sit in a corner and shotgun it to death. Very effective with Kaguya.
Meanwhile another game from these guys came out already (most people are different but still).
I really hope they don't overwork, because this is a lot and it's still all free.

The extra boss theme is great to listen to.
there is a way to have all orbs present by pressing the secondary user key for a few seconds
I feel like the hp on some of the spells is too low. You barely get to see a second cycle of them. And they look gorgeos too, so kind of a waste.
It's really only because of the two colors he's using and that he's very clearly good at this. If you use the other shots, I find that some spells feel like forever to clear.

That looks like an impressive fan game. When did it come out?
The full game came out on January 28, 2019. I’m not sure about the exact date, but this extra stage came out just a few days ago.
Ah, the extra came out July 6.

Again, Mumei's theme is mostly underwhelming for an extra boss, too peaceful jazz, but the climax kinda saves it, a shame that i appreaciate the fact it has Set's theme
Aint gonna bother playing Extra because my laptop really hates danmafuku (no clean 60 FPS) , and it keeps getting error after ending scene.
They've fixed that error in patch. Check Oyasu Milka's twitter for it.

Hmm this may be to the reference to Sukune of len'en. As their pottery can be used by spirits as vessels.since mumei is some sort of pottery spirit

At least according to egyptian mythology, Nebet(stage 5 midboss) is Set's sister. She's also his wife, but that's irrelevant...
It’s kinda cool to know now that technically you Did fight a male in the touhou franchise (Fan game idc)

Nah, Mumei allowed Set to inhabit her body. She's based on a youkai called seto-taishou, meaning general seto(seto is a type of japanese pottery), which makes General Set also a pun on seto.

@@christianthomas8069 I think hellatze meant that the extra stage in HSoB has two in game difficulties (Extra Easy and Extra)
There's also a data of a third one in the game, but it either got scrapped or it's about to be released later. Think Absurdly Extra from Len'en series.

Wouldn't happen in a official touhou game. Like a boss shouldn't stop a nonspell after 5sec of being hit
