- Back in 1989 guitarplayer Jim Hall (1930-2013) was our guest in our little cozy radiostudio in Hilversum. He played his composition “Careful”. In this masterpiece his use of the guitar as a miniature orchestra is amazing.
The modest maestro, with immense influence, once said: “I find solo playing boring after about 10 minutes. I even got bored with Segovia. So I tried to think orchestrally, like Duke Ellington, to keep it interesting for me, and the listeners.” His introspection, lyricism, spontaneity and risk-taking further set him apart. Hall was highly influenced by saxophonists and pianists. In his outstanding career he played with the best musicians of his time like Sonny Rollins, Ben Webster, Bill Evans and Sonny Stitt.
“Careful” is a tricky piece and recorded many times by the guitarist over the decades. The eminent Peter Bernstein once said: “It’s a 16 bar blues, and if you’re not careful, you’ll make a 12 bar blues of it.” Remember Jim Hall (1930-2013) and also check this new Milestones Serie of a Jazz Legend on Spotify.

His playing style was IMO unique and understated, often dissonant and yet so melodic at the same time . He was a master at less sounding like tons more. One of my favorite guitarists and I truly miss him.

Please note that the quote is not by Peter Bernstein but by Jim Hall himself: “It’s a 16 bar blues, and if you’re not careful, you’ll make a 12 bar blues of it.” I knew Jim personally. He had a wonderful sense of humor.

I saw him at Lincoln Center in 2010. Very old and fragile but what a legend. Unforgettable evening.
I'm not a guitarist, but I really dig his subtle triplet phrasing that he does, seemingly with his left hand. Very deft rhythmic phrasing. Reminds me a little bit of a rudiment or two a drummer would do. He's been one of my very favorite guitarists since my childhood guitarist buddy turned me on to his great album 'Jim Hall Live!' when it came out in 1975.
Yeah, exactly! He was really into legato phrasing with the left hand, to get more colors out of the guitar, like a slur on a horn.
Some years (more than I want to remember) I remember seeing Jim do Careful at the BlueNote on 3rd Street in the Village. I remember it was one of the last songs that night and that it was as inspring as it is on this video!

Were he still with us Jim would’ve been 90 years old today. A sublime musician and a true gentleman. I had the great privilege of meeting Jim and hearing him live many times through the years and I miss him dearly.

At a Central Park festival, saw Jim rolling his amp up to the Wolman Rink stage years ago. He looked like a shoe cobbler and PROCEEDED TO PLAY ALOT OF MUSIC. Thanks so much for this.

Thank you for posting this great rendition of a song I've always liked by Jim Hall. Gary Burton did a nice cover version of this on his 1978 ECM album 'Times Square' (with Tiger Okoshi, Roy Haynes and Steve Swallow).

This is great! I just transcribed the version of this tune off the Jimmy Giuffre 3 album, The Easy Way. the turnaround is different but the first 12 bars are the same. I had come up with different fingerings, and it's great to see how Jim played it. So, I'm learning his fingering from this. It makes sense and follows some of the things he talked about. Keeping things on same strings sometimes and playing more horizontally because the tone of the string and the legato it makes possible. So glad I stumbled across this. Thanks for posting!!!! I'll play it both ways and continue to explore your exploration in the diminished scale, Mr Hall. Thank you! (yes, i know) and ( I hung out with Jim Hall one night back in 2003 or so after a show. They say don't meet your heros, but Jim was even greater a person than I could ever have imagined. )

This iconic D'Aguisto archtop had a huge sticker on the side with "I LOVE JANE" on it / (Jane was Jim's wife ).
The pick-up was a Guild humbucker.
I studied briefly with Jim about a year before this was recorded, and I even got to play THE D’Aquisto for about five minutes. Fabulous… but to my great surprise, I did not sound like Jim… LOL. (No sticker, at least at that time, just sayin’.) Anyway, that brief period will always be a cherished memory for me. What a fantastic musician and human being. Great video here!
I’ve no idea what the pickup here is. Jim’s Guild humbucker was covered (at least it was when I studied with him). But Jim would sometimes try other things; there’s a great video of him here, playing duo with Bob Brookmeyer in 1987, where he has an Atilla Zoller pickup mounted in this same guitar. ua-cam.com/video/vsvan-Q7mww/v-deo.html

Didn't know J.H got into playing quite dissonant stuff, I've only heard him playing classic jazz/bebop
TV show is called Vrije Geluiden which is Duth for Free Sounds. So they said to mr. Hall: 'We don't mind what do, as long as you play free sounds!'
So, listen to "Embraceable You" live at Village West (third Ron Carter duo album, 1984) and come back to discuss about him dissonant stuff, despite being just a standard...

Jim kept growing til the very end. He was never content wot stay comfortable. Always pushing the envelope. Miles too.

Does it have a loaded tube amp sound?
Nope. It's a D'Aquisto original made for Jim. And the unique sound is probably due to his VERY heavy playing and that the guitar is also mic'd in 2 places: The Amp and the Soundholes so you get a REALLY thin punch along with the pickup. Lastly, I think he's playing with tone pot on 3/4 open. Sounds only slightly miffed.

Both. There's a mic set in front of the guitar, then you can see here and there Jim setting his own volume on the electric instrument. Jim has been recording this way tons of times (both live and in the studio); he liked to be free to strum acoustically à la Freddie Green (Count Basie orchestra), then turn up his volume to play lead.

He's Playing flatwounds. And it's an interesting mix of the mic (picking up the guitar acoustically) and the guitar amp filling the room. I think its a great sound for solo guitar. Not my sound, but it sounds like Jim!
Yes, the guitar sounds pretty dead and ugly IMO, maybe on purpose, maybe not. Kind of reminds me of Mary Halvorson's tone.
