I’ve grew up in Stockton and I remember Chinatown being really active back in the day. Same with where the Filipino plaza is. I remember there was a hall (maybe where that church is at now) where a lot of people would hold parties and there was a lot of residents in that area who were all Chinese. There was also a Chinese market there off the corner, a salon, a lot of Chinese stores and restaurants around the area.
Big Thank You...
In the movie Fat City you can see the construction of the crosstown and some of the old buildings still standing.
Thanks for this video. I appreciate your commentary and it's important these kinds of videos get made. I lived in Stockton in the late 90's and never spent enough time getting to know the history of Chinese folks that once lived there and what their legacy means for us today. Thanks.
Great video thank you!
Great job on this piece Bro. It’s inspiring to seen your enthusiasm in what you do. Thank you 🙏🏽
Great informative video.
I was born and raised in stockton and I remember the old Chinatown, practiced Gung Fu at Confucius Church and watched as Chinatown slowly disappeared, I’m 68 years old now and have good memories of old Chinatown, my parents and grand parents are buried in the French camp Chinese cemetery
I used to live in San Jose, CA and never visited Stockton. Thank you for sharing the video.
Damn bro be safe walking around downtown with your camera like that, especially alone.
I ran into a few "interesting" personalities there, but yes I watch my surroundings when I vlog lol
I used to live in that building it was a family shelter
There are a few more remnants but like the man said they are pretty spread out. Thank you for exploring this gives us a little bit of pride when we can appreciate our past. Thanks again
Props to you for taking the time to do this. Strange it’s so empty compared to
Oakland and SF Chinatowns. I used to drive past this when I lived in Stockton but don’t ever recall much happening here.
Great video
I highly recommend you to go check out Chinese Camp, CA.

Chinese Camp was one of my favorite adventures!
I lived there from 93 - 2003. Went to Delta college. Workout and play hoop and racquet ball at In-Shape in Bianchi rd and Marc Ln. Un look sam was really good. Reminiscing the good old days.
In the early 70's I took King Fu there at the Confucius Church indeed the teachers of Johnson and Bryan Chan
There was a small Chinatown in Marysville. Yes, they had a presence in little old Marysville.
You should go to the philippines and check out their China town in Manila
I only been here in Stockton California for 3 years from the east coast….I knew it was a Chinatown here BUT I can’t believe it’s the 3rd largest in California…..smh…that has to be incorrect because the Chinatown here in Stockton is VERY SMALL….I have some Stockton driving videos on my channel & will post some new ones later this week.
Emerald Restaurant was a staple back in the day.
If they left Chinatown as is i guarantee it will grow and prosper. We Asian don't move down. We move up.
Have you been to Locke yet? Cool old town.

Locke is a very interesting place, one of my personal favorites to visit!
Passed by the monument and Chinatown many times before, but never actually explored it because I've always thought the community wanted to stay inclusive, but seeing the strong overall Asian community (Filipinos, Japanese, Chinese) be fused together, really made me smile! Thank you for the video!
There is a Chinese cemetery next to the San Joaquin General Hospital. There are 3 Jewish cemeteries. Stockton was once a vibrant city. I once thought of retiring there, but the city got more and more scary.
I think at one point Stockton was rated one of the most dangerous cities in CA lol
The only thing related to San Jose’s Chinatown is a replica of the the temple of the 5 gods located in Kelly Park historical Park.
When I went last time they were closed!! Good thing SJ is close enough to SF so I can visit whenever I'm not lazy
@@jacks_off_to they open every other Sunday, and that’s before Covid. I’m not for certain what their schedule is like now but it’s every other Sunday, not sure if they have a website. Temple of 5 gods San Jose
Thank you.
I can't wait for you to do this for NYC's Chinatown.
@@jacks_off_to Ah... LA. Forgot about that one.
I have been to the main one in Manhattan. Had a good Shanghai meal there.
@@healychen there's also Chinatowns in Yokohama, Manila, Bangkok, London, Vientiane.. this Chinatown enthusiasm is getting out of hand hahahhah
@@jacks_off_to Long term project lol. There's also one in Chicago. I've been to that one, and the one in Yokohama.
Thanks for your hard work in putting together the Chinese community in Stockton. By the way, your English doesn't have Chinese accent. But when speak Cantonese, you are able to speak perfect Cantonese. Thanks for the time putting up the video for us.
He does have some accent. Particularly noticeable when he says “chinatown”. But very good english still.
I don't remember the last chinese new year parade in the mid or late 80s, but sadly it has stop rally in the street. Fireworks went off to fend off bad spirits. Drums and dragon dance in the street. Chinese dance and show. Again sadly it all gone and stopped.
Golden 🌟 restaurant 😋
My dad would take us to the Chinese new year parade proud to be part of that history .....
I'm currently taking Mexican American history and we also learned a bit about the Chinese. Unfortunately they were discriminated and Chinatown was apparently flooded and set on fire. They built communities around here too. I believe galt is one of them. Or somewhere a lil more north of Stockton. It's very important to learn real, true history. Great video. I've passed by driving down el dorado many times but never walked around there... It is Stockton 😬
Where is the china town that’s abandoned out on the islands.
Omg, I grow up in stockton nd never know we have a China town🤪 say what😅😅 I'll visit when I'm down there again
I love your commentary. its like having a tour guide with me. Good job. Stockton Chinatown looks dead as hell haha
5months ago are you sur that’s not 15 years ago
RIP to San Jose and Sacramento China town they’re remains are barely visible now
@@jacks_off_to that’s wild, they should definitely be preserved somehow
When I was growing up in the 70's-80's, there were several Chinese restaurants we loved in that area. Today they are all long gone, most replaced with Mexican restaurants.
El Dorado! Chinatowns best Mexican restaurant!
There are lots of good Mexican restaurants everywhere lol. Jack's off to a Mexican restaurant
Looks more like a ghost chinatown..😧😧😧
You know he didn't do his homework. The main Asian out here in Stockton is the south east Asian as in Cambodian vietnamese Lao n hmong ain't no Chinese out here haha... no disrespect but damn Chinese don't stay in Stockton they in lodi haha
There used to be a big Chinese community but now the southeast Asians are big
some Vietnamese are of Chinese descent so technically you could say Chinese are still in Stockton :P
Cha-Town
Ghost town
I’ve lived here 25+ years and I never knew we had a Chinatown.. let alone it being the third largest one! Never noticed the Confucius monument either... pretty neat actually.
Born and raised here.. I knew about it but never stopped to check it out.. its just being Stockton you really don't think much about anything which I wish I actually stopped to look now that I seen the video 😕
@@Baybieangel209 I understand completely. It’s probably because we lived here all of our lives, so we never looked at it as exciting or bothered to explore 🤷🏻♀️ but now that I know about its history, I always make sure to pay more attention driving around downtown and I’m like in awe lol
Same here born and raised, 22 years I finally find out 😂
