  • Here's how I mounted my MAXTRAX to my roof rack with a bit of DIY and a $60 set of MAXTRAX mounting pins. You could certainly come up with a completely DIY approach, but for the price, these make it SO fast & easy to create your own lockable mounting system.
    The MAXTRAX boards and mounting pins were provided by Adventure Imports with no strings attached...I am under no obligation whatsoever to even make a video about them. I was just thoroughly impressed by how well the mounting pins work and felt this was useful to share.

    Great DIY project, the only done side to the key mounts is the nuts can be in screwed and removed a hole drilled in the thread area a lock could be used so the nuts can not be removed and the mounts and mats stolen. The mats are not cheap along with the mounts could be an expensive loss. Other than that a great tool. Always enjoy your videos!!!

    Very good, Donald! Very slick solution.
    I have "cheap" boards that came with a bag. I throw them in the extra cab area for now.. Not ideal, but I don't yet have an exterior mounting solution.

    Hey Donald, great idea! One note is those small Master locks you showed in the beginning will seize up after a couple months in the weather so don't leave them out like I did. When I did need mine to help recover someone that was stuck on the trail they wouldn't open and I had to drill them out with a drill I keep in my rig......Just my experience my friend.

    Did something very similar with my rack. I used 80/20 for the cross members. Picked up some steel brackets that were already painted black with a holes that just needed to be widened a bit. Bolted it all together and done. Those pins make all the difference.
    I even used the same masterlock you did, I put two locks on kitty corner from each other. Been on there for a year without issue.

    I have the cheap ones you had and they don't nest worth a crap but my son wanted me to have a set for the Tacoma so they were a Christmas present. We are both you and I DIYer's and I tried and still have mounted on my fake Prinsu rack 2 aluminum bares that I purchased at the depot. It works sort of but aluminum is flexible and bends when I tighten them LOL! I like yours better. Thanks for the idea's.

    • @softroadingthewest
      @softroadingthewest  Рік тому

      They're not ceramic, they're steel. They are designed for the unistrut/superstrut system. Take a look in the electrical aisle at Home Depot, near the conduit. You'll find the channel, various nuts, and other connectors & brackets.

    This is awesome. Do you know the strength of the locks you used? I want to use these but don't what lock to order for pairing it with the maxtrax mounts.

    • @softroadingthewest
      @softroadingthewest  Рік тому

      I don't know the strength, they are pretty small holes for the locks. I think I went to the hardware store with one of the mounts in hand so I could look at the locks with my own eyes to judge the thickness of the shank. It's not like a super high security kinda thing, more to prevent an opportunistic thief from just walking off with them.

    Thanks for the video Donald. You are appreciated. Do you by chance have a good source for those nylon strut nuts? I recently finished a small project mounting a jerry can and used the strut nuts with springs, which worked okay, but those nylon ones look legit. The home stores around the area seem devoid of strut and accessories, atm.

    • @softroadingthewest
      @softroadingthewest  2 роки тому +2

      I buy them at Home Depot. It's funny, because normally I buy everything at an independent, locally-owned home improvement store that is bigger and better than Home Depot in every way, but they only carry the spring nuts, so I have to stop at Home Depot just for packets of the nylon ones which are MUCH nicer to use.

    • @oscarjohnson5549
      @oscarjohnson5549 2 роки тому

      Depot or lowes should have them, in the electrical section near the unistrut should be a section with assorted fasteners. it was literally a 2 foot section on the very bottom shelf at my lowes, super easy to miss.

    • @jimh_vta
      @jimh_vta 2 роки тому

      Thanks guys, I will keep looking, must just be a shortage in the area, my lowes for example, has no strut in stock and just a few accessories.

    Great solution, especially when Maxtrax are from the mud. But a solution suitable for a outback such as Alaska, Canada or Australia. In the city, they can easily steal it from you. I'm discreet and I have everything hidden inside the car.

  • @rao180677
    @rao180677 4 місяці тому

    That solution is not concerned with security is it? Cause otherwise I can just unscrew the nut and remove everything

    • @softroadingthewest
      @softroadingthewest  4 місяці тому

      Honestly probably faster & easier to just cut through the tiny padlock with a 12v angle grinder. :-) It's not about high security, it's primarily about just carrying them, and secondarily preventing casual opportunistic theft. Nearly every vehicle carrying Maxtrax uses these pins in some way, but I haven't heard stories of thieves unbolting them. In my configuration here, someone would need to literally climb up on the roof of my truck to access all four of the nuts. I imagine that if a thief is actually carrying around the necessary tools to accomplish this, they're probably aiming for something a little more valuable and easier to discreetly carry & re-sell. That said, when I need to park in urban or potentially higher crime areas, I do not leave anything on truck including my padlocked fuel containers...I strip it down. On my neighborhood street or in the parking lot at the grocery store, it's proven to be secure enough.

    I bought a set of recovery boards off Amazon for $80 that had really great reviews. I built a mounting system using uni-struts and hold them down with a strap and some wing nuts. Maxtraxx boards just seems over priced to me.

    • @softroadingthewest
      @softroadingthewest  2 роки тому +4

      My inexpensive $80 boards did work just fine the two times I needed them (recovering someone else's rig stuck in sand).
      I think actual Maxtrax is an expense many don't need to invest in. I do see how people who need to use their boards multiple times on every trip would want them on their rig. And having them in hand, the quality/durability difference is clear compared to the cheap boards I've been carrying. It does still seem like a lot of money for some plastic and I had no intention to buy a set anytime soon, but not gonna lie, I was happy for the opportunity to put them on my rig.
      I wanted to make this video not about whether or not the Maxtrax expense is worth it, rather, it's intended for those who DO decide to buy Maxtrax and are trying to figure out how to mount them. Having seen aftermarket Maxtrax mounts in the $200-$300+ range, I was excited by how these pins make a DIY solution both simple and relatively affordable. :-)

      @@softroadingthewest If it is something you might need/want infrequently then the Amazon, low end stuff is fine but if it is mission critical at all then the name brand is probably the best bet. Lets not be penny wise but pound foolish. For years I had a box store, plastic air pump that needed a 20 minute cool down after every 5 minutes of use. Once we started going into the far north, beyond the Arctic circle, etc you bet I up-rated to a Viair pump. For instance.

    • @thekingofplay8539

      If you had an hr to mess with it sure. Getting at all 4 would be a pain. Those lock nuts don't thread off easily at all and You'd be best off with the proper sized socket/ratchet. Again, if you could even reach the rear corner with the boards in place.
      You'd save yourself 59 mins by just bringing a bolt cutters, cut the lock, twist the posts to natural and slide off the boards.

    • @Furniture121
      @Furniture121 2 роки тому +1

      If they have the tools to do that, they likely also have a bolt cutter to cut the lock... Locks only keep out honest people.

    • @softroadingthewest
      @softroadingthewest  2 роки тому +2

      Indeed, that went right by me, heh. Another commenter mentioned security nuts, I think I'll do that to add an extra barrier to the casual opportunistic thief. I would likely also just remove the boards and lock them inside if I ever had to park anyplace sketchy.
