I worked for Volvo for 5 years and I’ve been a truck mechanic for 10 years, you don’t need to pre fill your oil filters. Once the engine is running the oil filters fill up very fast and it won’t cause any damage to your engine. That being said I’ve never heard of major engine damage caused by pre filling your oil filters either, the main thing is you’re changing your oil on time and using good oil and filters

@@DanEBoyd No. Anyone who knows how an engine works knows that oil is pumped from the sump into the filters. He does his own work to save money. This is a business. Less money spent is more money earned.
@@dillonh321 Anyone who has changed oil filters and not put any oil in them, knows that an engine will make a bunch of tapping noises and worse, until the filter is full and supplying pressure. Where there are tapping noises, there is undue wear. And you only need to fill the filter maybe halfway, to have the engine start with no noises, and have the oil pressure gauge come up normally or extinguish the warning light.
Perfect reason I would never have a youtube channel Damn if you do, damn if you don't To many Karens and Kevins playing Monday morning quarterback. Good job Rusty and I have no opinion on what you do. I just watch as I drink my morning coffee for entertainment.
I always do two or three pours (to the top and let it settle down in) into a new oil filter, and find that that is enough to make the oil pressure gauge rise right away, (like it always normally does) and not make clattering noises. When I used to put the filters on dry, I hated listening to that clattering sound and waiting for the oil pressure gauge to finally come up. I don't worry about pouring the oil in the already-filtered side of the filter, because I'm going to be pouring the exact same equally unfiltered oil directly into the engine, where it will have to circulate all through the engine before it goes through the filter for the first time... What's a few more ounces going to matter?
People rattling off on oil specs: Its a big diesel in a semi truck it doesn't care if you put 15w40 in it even if Volvo wants you to run something thinner. Id rather have a 15w40 in there to protect this hard working semi truck engine in the southeast climate than 10w30? somebody said you should use. These days they even make 0w40 oil so that would be ideal if the truck was up north and had to do lots of cold starts. 1st digit species cold flow ability 2nd set of digits defines the viscosity at 100c celsius. A 30 weight is pretty thin at 100c, a 0w20 is as thin as water and a 40 weight will be pretty much optimal for most engines and a 50 or 60 weight will be too thick for most standard applications. Yes there are engines that will do just fine with 0w20 like the new gen of Mazda engines for example those are tight and were designed for 0w20. But a big diesel in a semi yeah I would say a 40 weight is the way to go, use a 5w40 or 0w40 when its very cold out and 10w40 or 15w40 as a summer oil.

@@alouisschafer7212 Volvo wants people to mess up their engines with bad maintenance so they can sell more trucks. Regular oil changes with 5w40 synthetic is the best protection.
Yes, you pre fill fuel filters but not engine oil filters. It’s scary how much stupid there is.
im 61 now and have a bodyshop.i think your pretty cool i used to drive truck in late 70s to mid 80s.glad im away from it but i was your age then i got lonely on the road.stupid if i woulda kept driving like my neigbor he drove for walmart for 35 years otr he would leave sunday night and back home friday night late he did that for 35 years.hes retired now with a big rv and classic cars home paid for kinda jeloius.he always smirks at me he says see when your working for the right company it pays off.he married out of high school she never had a job so walmart took care of himand his wife and kids my neighbor
Those are circulating filters so no need to prefill them.
You probably have algae in your fuel system... I've had it in my 2013 van and that filter kept blacking out and clogging up as well... Got me some algae treatment and it was gone after changing my filters two more times....(because of the dead algae comming out....) Oh i have never pre-filled my filters, because when the ening is running it wil fill the filters by itself because the oilpump is pumping the oil. Never had any problem with that.
The reason you don’t use tools to tighten volvo filters is because you can crack the filter housing . Ask me how I know😂 I didn’t fallow the instructions and cracked mine. Almost $1200 to get it replaced.
I’m not hating here I’m a heavy mechanic my self but rusty as you stated in the start of the video saying you don’t know how your doing wrong cause you have been doing it for a long time I’m gonna say this that just cause you been doing a jobs long time doesn’t mean your doing it right your just doing it a way that works there is no right or wrong way of doing it it’s all preference but agree about the filters should only be done hand night cause they’re I’ll tighten them selfs
Another thing is yes like holes into the filters but not until you have loosened the filters first cause if you drain those filters and all of a sudden you find that the filters have seized on
Hi Rusty!🙃
Hi James Zimmerman
@@BF-qt2wp Hi BF18 how ya doing today?😊 You have a super day!
Nice work man 👍
If that is a fuel filter, the black will be the asphaltains of the diesel. No problem with that at all.
The oil pump fills up the filter’s
yea, after the engine is on, and it take times to soak through, that means there are mins that your filter is not working.
@@thevinceberry there’s a video of a transparent oil filter. It’s pretty much instant. At idle there’s no pressure on the bearings it will not damage the engine.
I don’t pre fill oil filters never had a problem, just pre fill the fuel filters for sure
A good way to know how much oil to put in the engine is to measure the oil that came out.
I love your videos
False . You don’t know if it was filled correctly to begin with .
@peterseinfeld Bro do you know what a dip stick is.
@@markm0000 Is that some kind of sexual reference? Kinda sounds like a good time to me .
Fill that oil to full mark on dipstick and change that fuel water separator filter and wash that truck and polish rims please Rusty ☝️💪👊😝
You need to order Magic Filters... They are the only ones that fill themselves 😭 Keep it Safe out there Driver .. Enjoy your content 🤗
1st comment.. I luv your Volvo will u tour your cabin

This is the one of the most comfortable truck in the market follow by T680.
Did you greas your truck ?
Get some of that kill em stuff for the fuel tanks. You do live in warm climate so algae grows in fuel tanks.
Trucker number 3
Why don't you make your own company or work for someone and make more videos I like your video
Fuel separator filter should be replaced at 15k miles or before actually some of them don’t even get to 15k
Volvo tell you it last until oil change but filters manufacturers say 15k
Same for oil Volvo say 25k if heavy use 50k oil changes
But rotella say it Last only 15k
What you get from your oil filter is soot . DEF emissions engines are dirty engines
fuel separator mounted upsidedown
Dam u be come venom from spiderman 7:07 🤯🤣
Invest in some latex gloves dude. Come on.😂
My favorite truck ever.
Same 👍
Ask a Volvo mechanic that's the only real answer
DEEEEEEEEENCH -Volvo Mechanic in comments says no need to pre-fill filters. If anyone would know, he would.
@@gord2358 But a Volvo mechanic is surely under a good bit of pressure pressure to get the job done in as little time as possible, so that might be influencing his opinion there.
The $300 question is: Which way does he do his own vehicles???
@@DanEBoyd
No.
Hey you charge oil put so grover on
nice video
Mabye u need to clean both of your dissal tanks
Wow he is doing a oil change and has a check engine light on. I guess a oil change is more important than a check engine light
Perfect reason I would never have a youtube channel
Damn if you do, damn if you don't
To many Karens and Kevins playing Monday morning quarterback.
No oil in the filters ≈ No oil on your bearings until the filters are full. Dude has a Slime problem, you need biokleen to kill it.
You are right.👍👍👍
Don’t prefill the oil filter. Follow the directions right on the filter…
