Very nicely done, Mike. I hope you are doing well and staying healthy during this unusual time. Good to see you keeping the lathe running during isolation.
That is a very beautiful bowl, mr. Waldt. I still have to use an old Myfrod lathe - so cannot duplicate. But I love everything on that bowl. Regards from a locked down South Africa.
Araucaria araucana (commonly called the monkey puzzle tree, monkey tail tree, piñonero, or Chilean pine). Thanks for the video. I love the symmetry of the knots. If I keep watching you I shall have to buy a small lathe and plunge down the rabbit hole. Love your work.
Mike no matter if I am every day on the lathe to work ! I always jealous of how calm you work ! I follow this one also on the social media !!! Finaly I see the video ! Have a great day brother and stay safe !!!
Wonderful bowl Mike! Great to see you turning again. I have never heard of Monkey Puzzle, but it sure looked a lot like Norfolk Island Pine. I have not see any of that personally either but I saw someone turning some. What you chose to do was perfect and the finish flawless as usual.- Paige C.
Hi Mike It Good to See You I Hope You Are Well Great Video Brilliant Job on The Monkey Puzzle Bowl Beautiful Finish My Friend Take Care and Stay Stay 👍 Friend from Glasgow UK
Hi Mike....beautiful bowl... the Monkey puzzle is really unusual...we had one in our garden when I was a lad . Sadly it was cut down and burnt ...as they grow the lower branches are removed and they loose a lot of sticky sap from the cuts I guess that's why there are so many cracks where the branches were ... great video as always....All the best.....Andy
Very interesting piece of wood, never heard of it before. It turned out quite beautifully. Your new lathe looks like an awesome machine. Again, well done, Mike. Take care.
Gorgeous. I agree with your decision to keep and accent the knots/inclusions. Must have been very challenging to deal with the radical difference in hardness from knot to soft-ish wood. Beautiful job.
Yaay, Mike's back on the lathe again. Lovely looking bowl and it was a great idea to leave the indents there. Made it look that bit more special. Take care to you and all the family.
You made all the right decisions, Mike, as to the design and features. The finish is quite nice, as well. Great job, my friend. Stay safe, this too, shall pass, I hope... I see Boris is out of Intensive Care today so things might be looking up! Phil
Absolutely amazing piece, Mike! I love what you did with that piece of Monkey Puzzle. To be honest, I don’t think I have ever seen that species before. Thanks for the introduction! Stay safe, my friend!! Happy turning, .....Gord
Absolutly beautiful mike and im so glad you did this as i have a couple pieces about the same size ,which i have to turn just got to get them a bit smaller to fit my midi lathe - thanks again ian
Hello from stormy Martha’s Vineyard I have never hear of this wood before. It is pretty and as always you made it into a beautiful pice. I finally decided that I was going to do some work on the lathe this afternoon as it’s been far to long. No sooner did I get my wood chucked up and the lathe spinning the very second my tool hit the rest the power went out. 😡 I guess it wasn’t meant to be. As always thanks for sharing Mike Take Care my friend Tim .
What gorgeous bowl. You could grow something in it that comes out of the holes 😂. I see your new lathe didn't bat an eyelid so to speak. Lovely work. Stay safe and enjoy your time at home as much as possible.🙂
Bram asked my question, which is: Are Monkey Puzzle and Norfolk Island Pine the same? And the answer is no. Norfolk Island Pine is native to Australia and also grows in California. Monkey Puzzle is native to central and southern Chile and western Argentina. They do look similar when cut where the limbs emerge. But to get on to Mikes bowl. It's quite nice Mike. Very nice how you allowed the openings to remain. The color and grain figure are very nice. And of course your finish is outstanding. Your new lathe handles the out of balance quite well too. Thank you for sharing Mike. Take care and stay healthy.
Mike - really great on the inside - very smooth even before the sanding. I must try some of this one day - but as you know it is hard to get. Great skill M8
Mr Waldt, if I may ask a question: I am a rookie/novice turner. For the most part I only have green or punky softwoods such as silver maple at my disposal. I have been plagued with literally hours of sanding due to the terrible amounts of tear-out I create. You said something interesting at the 4:20 point. "...where there's tear-out I'll be applying either wood hardener or sanding sealer." I am not familiar with wood hardener. This term is new to me. And your quote led me to wonder if you were going to apply these before you started sanding. As if perhaps you have a method, unknown to me, with which you reinforce the punk to reduce the amount of tear-out before you make your cleanup cuts and start sanding. Would you be willing to elaborate; or did I misunderstand?
Hi Tom, often on very soft wood I will use extra coats of sanding sealer, or a good wood hardener if the wood is very soft, to stiffen up the fibres. This gives a better chance of less tearout ... but tools must be sharp, and very light cuts. They also assist the sanding process with soft woods too.
Thank You Mike....That was exceptional...4 me first time viewer...I pass a huge Monkey Puzzle Tree hiking and have wondered what it would look like turned, now I know....would you consider it a hard wood or more like a Pine in hardness ?....TM
Beautiful bowl, I have not seen monkey puzzle turned before, really interesting piece. Thank you for sharing

Thank you Jean-Christophe.
Wonderfull Mike, I strongly believe it was great to do this on the stratos-xl
Thank you Huig.
Thanks for sharing that, well done!
Thank you Hassan.
Beautiful result. Im curious why the bowl gouge and not a roughing gouge to start?
Thanks Mark ... no reason just felt like using the bowl gouge 🙂
Thank You Mike....That was exceptional...4 me first time viewer...I pass a huge Monkey Puzzle Tree hiking and have wondered what it would look like turned, now I know....would you consider it a hard wood or more like a Pine in hardness ?....TM
Thank you Tuffy apart from the knots which are rock hard and there are six, the wood varies from "nice to turn" to a bit "punky". Thanks for watching.
Beautiful goblet, but where's the stem and base??? Lovely again Mike !
Thanks Adrian ... they flew off the lathe into the garden mate 😆😆
A wonderful piece of woodturning. One question, how did you fit the chunk to the lathe initially Mike?
Thank you Helen, between centres to do initial shaping and forming a tenon to grab in the chuck.
Cheers
Mike
