Weirdness Rating: 10/10
Three ridiculous men fist their way through KFC's evil army of Karnov clones and sheep sorcerers or something. I really can't tell you. - Ігри
Trio the Punch could be an anthropomorphic bowl of punch...possibly a nemesis of the Kool-Aid Man?
Ooooh
A punch is also a tool, a kind of metal rod that's pushed onto things hard. Subtle of them!
That guy with the hammer is Chelnov from Atomic Runner! Another Data East game! but you probably know that by now :D
Christ, it is - the head thing that accompanies him is the second boss from that game, too. Don't why I didn't recognise them immediately; I did a Let's Play of that game a few years ago.
+Larry Bundy Jr Seems you pop up everywhere mate XD Cheers!
Oh, also -- SKELETONS RIDING OSTRICHES
**the game over theme from Karnov plays**
Naming a punch is actually possible. It could be an example naming your signature move, like Falcon Punch. If that's the case, "Trio the Punch" implies that "trio" is the punch's name, so I'm imagining someone screaming "TRIOOOOO!!!" while punching someone in a way only he can.
But... but weebles wobble and they don't fall down. This is a proven fact.
I have to agree with you: that is actually the weirdest game I’ve ever seen.
19.05 - One of my dogs started barking at the ballerina-fish hybrid on my television. Even animals find Trio the Punch weird.
Date East liked inserting Karnov in everything they could. He's in Bad Dudes, and several other games.
Ah yes, date east, up there with syga and capcum
@@тесси-з2ы I love this so much, I'm leaving the typo as is.
@@Babbleplay thanks
17:04 You know, the classic arch-enemies of Captain Justice! We got every one here. First there’s “The Strongman” known for his ability to lift entire boulders! Then we have “Megafist” the demon, “Whiplash” the serpent, and who could forget the Blaster Brothers “Fisheye and Goatbrains”? And of course we have the evil mastermind, “The Black Knight” and his top assassin “Sharpshot”, who instead of throwing knives or shurikens, throws SWORDS at his targets.
(I’m sorry, I’m just really tired right now)
Oh. Instead of "Weebles fall down," it should have said "red light" or "Simon says freeze."
It's still a halfway decent localization. I can see what they were going for. Fun Fact: I've seen the english dub of an anime where they call Daruma "Furbies".
Truly the Holy Grail of bizzare games
I can only assume that this game was either A: Developed by process of randomly pulling things from a hat or B: Developed in the same way as Axe Cop and they just brought in a six year old to make up random shit.
+little_dog or C: the region where Data East is located just has the better crack :P
Even weirder is the game's origins as a sugoroku game, which is a Japanese board game. The old man's roulette in the final game is probably a leftover from that phase of development.
This is everything I was hoping for and more.
Great video, man. Data East was really good at making crazy weird stuff.
Actually, there's a game you might not have gotten around to called Curse of Enchantia that might just be even weirder than this. It's a European adventure game for PC/Amiga. It's worth a peek, but SERIOUSLY, use a walk-through. You'll need it.
The Rock Critic I second that.
It aways amuse me how times passes fast when I watch your reviews. It's that good.
In this game you hit Karnov. In Soviet Russia Karnov hits YOU!
Kanji as projectiles, check.
Finally, a perfect score in weirdness! We've come a long way in absurdities after a penguin who breaks the sound barrier. I like how all the characters in the game look like they have a serious stroke. Man this game is awesome.
This game came out in Japan on April 1 1990, The Game is a Joke... The End
Zombies-riding-Go-karts must be relatives of Skeletons-riding-ostriches.
Cue the Karnov Game Over Music*
"I have no emotional whatever with which I can actually even."
Auto-sub for wit.
Thanks weird video games! For making this episode! Lucky cha cha cha!
YES! Glad you're making regular videos again.
+Efe Aydal You mean irregular?
25:15 Well, obviously Colonel Sanders is able to make you small because it’s such a juggernaut of a company, that it makes you feel small in compariso-
28:14 W-well, okay, Daruma’s are also kind of a big thing in Japan, so maybe that’s-
29:02 Yeah I got nothing. It’s pretty clearly just a gimmick they really liked.
i tried really hard man... i tried so many times... but i still cant forget this game until now...
BTW, my favorite boss in Trio the Punch is the Totem/Pillar Of Monsters from 16:24-17:44!!!!!!
Probably it's already been commented, but what the heck, the writing "DARMA-SAN (without "u", which is silent) KORONDA" is uttered in a popular Japanese kid's game by the same name. Basically it's the Japanese version of the game of the STATUES. In the Japanese version the Curator says (slowly): "Bodhidharma Fell" (Daruma-San Koronda - no, Bodhidarma is not the founder of Zen, guys, he's older and he's Indian), while all the other kids are trying to reach him (and win) without being noticed moving (i.e. while he's turning them his back). When the word "Koronda" is uttered, everybody has to freeze, while the Curator turns. Who is spotted by the Curator is disqualified.
ALSO, the hands are the same seen in TOKI (unsurprisingly, another (way less) weird game by Data East).
FURTHERMORE the Cat attracts the character because it's a 招き猫 - Mannekineko, or rather a calling/inviting cat (used usually to attract luck, money, customers - hence the raised paw, in a calling "come here" gesture)
CHEERS FROM JAPAN nerds!
Weebles wobble, but they don't fall down!!
The Daruma-san game was also used in Takeshi's Castle. And I knew what Weebles are.
The only arcade game that weirded me out as much as Trio the Punch was Wild Fang (Tecmo Knight)
A Professional Karnov.
My guess for the final boss is that you figured out to disgust it to makes it flee.
28:00 So is like the japanese version of the game called "1,2,3, Stella!(Star)" that italian childern plays.
+StarFang Is that a Star Crash reference?
Weird Video Games
That movie referenced that child game, so yes.
I never saw Star Crash, by the way.
Weird Video Games No, it’s the Italian version of “Red light, green light.”
I love how the in video timer actually matches the UA-cam video timer perfectly. I've been playing a free to play MMO game on X1 called Onigiri. The Daruma is a recurring enemy in it, in various colors. One is also a dungeon boss. Lucky Cat is even in the game as Bakaneko. This game was run at the 2015 GDQ event.
Yeah, I've noticed that the Daruma appears in lots of older games that involve Japanese culture. In Ninja Kid on the original Nintendo, Daruma is an enemy in one stage. Also Daruma is an enemy in the arcade/Famicom game Ninja Kun, released only in Japan.
Matt Ring Daruma is kinda a lucky charm in Japan. That’s why it appears in so many games.
Colonel Sanders is in here because I believe someone in Japan once threw a plastic statue of him off a bridge and it caused bad luck for a baseball team. I faintly remember reading about it.
The dude with the hammer is Chelnov, another main character from a Data East game called....well, Chelnov-
I've seen a man playing vegetables like flutes, a man trying to fight a horse and a self eating gingerbread man but THIS has to be in the top five!
I don't know what this is but we need more of it. :-)
Is there a sequel called Quartet the Kick?
And as one final kicker, let me reveal that this game came out on April 1, 1990. THIS ENTIRE GAME WAS (probably) ONE BIG APRIL FOOLS JOKE.
The Colonel Sanders statue is a reference to "The Curse of the Colonel." In 1985, the Hanshin Tigers baseball team won the Japan Championship series, and fans celebrating the victory picked up a storefront statue of Colonel Sanders and threw it into the Dotonbori river. The Tigers haven't won a series since, which led to fans believing in the aforementioned curse.
They say if you place 1000 mental patients at 1000 computers they will eventually code this game.
Who's they? XD
These mental patients will call themselves "Data East."
This gloriously wierd game’s gunna be out as a part of the arcade archives series around the globe
Man you are gona haft to put in some work to find something wearder than this .
Thanks for cheering me up!
The Colonel Sanders thing reminds me of the "Curse of the Colonel".
The Henshin Tigers baseball team used to have a fan tradition where, after a major win, a fan lookalike of each player would jump into the river. Well, in 1985 - when they won the Japan Series - their MVP was a white, bearded American named Randy Bass. Unable to find a suitable lookalike, fans went to the nearby KFC, knocked over the statue of Colonel Sanders standing outside, and threw it into the river. The next day, they tried to recover it, but couldn't find it.
Since then, the team has been cursed.
(Most of the statue was eventually found in 2009, but it's still missing its glasses and left hand.)
yaketyyakumo Thank you for the info. Seriously. There seems to be a theme of Tigers and curses.
Spectacular. Thank you for spreading the word on this wonderful monstrosity. I just made some corrections to the Wikipedia page for the game after being learned up by you.
i just realized, since new york is famous for many christmas movies, cournal sanders is in nee your, because, he's a japanese christmas tradition! : ) , now, it all makes sence! : )
That's a chunky video! No less for such an infamous game.
Well, ok, the game was certainly as weird as you promised, heh
Always a pleasant surprise to see a new Weird Video Games!
14:19 "By the power of Greyskull!"
Punch can be a noun! A delicious, drinkable noun. Not that that actually helps the title make much more sense, though.
I'll also contend that Bravely Default is grammatically correct as a command, where "bravely" is an adverb and "default" is the verb. (It's actually a really clever title, too, in how it connects to the game itself.)
Some of the others are pretty messed up, though. ...As is this whole game. As for this review,
WIN WIN
This game seems REALLY long for an Arcade game!
Also, did you mention Donald Trump before anyone knew he was going to be president?!
Ueda Yuuji Fan Yup, he did.
I noticed a bunch of videos doing this and it baffled the hell out of me, until I remembered he was a prominent birther. That's probably the reason?
Shut up
Actually, it's only 30 minutes-ish long. There has been longer arcade games, like Wonder Boy, Bubble Bobble, Smash TV, etc.
Thus actually looks hella fun.
Santos + punching bag is actually better than ninja because of its massive hit detection and massive damage output against specific enemies.
Yeah but the Ninja has a better outfit
The reason why this game is called *Trio* the Punch is because this was the third game made by the same guy who made Chelnov and Karnov.
This game is a perfect example of why Japanese video game makers and psychotropic drugs should never mix. Great video.
*Should ALWAYS mix
I want to make a 3D remake of this game (And all the other video games Werid Video Games has reviewed already) just like mega man and Ghosts and Goblins have already done!!!!!!
"Dear god! what is that thing!?"
Poor Luke...lol
+TheHeroOfTomorrow Right?!
I have to know how many bizarre misadventures did Tom drag you through without mercy before?!
Well at least now I know why the Ninja class from final fantasy 14 has the ability to summon a frog that shoots a fireball. Must've been inspired by this! (not actually but you know)
This channel should probably be called Weird Retro Games.
+handsomebrick I did one modern game!
Weird Video Games
Its ujderstandable- even some of the weirdest games nowadays manage to give a reasoning for their weirdness. For example, Space Funeral's world has been corrupted and glitches are an in-canon thing. Or they have symbolism behind them, like... Oh that game where you're in a hospital running from giant eyes. (I'll have to come back when I remember it.)
Or they know they're weird and embrace it like Super Wagon Advebture
I have to ask.... How was the "Totem Pole" not next to the "Think Tank" in that episode of terrible warriors as another enemy late in the game? you may have been able to make Conel rage again!
23:08 it looks like a demon Michael Jackson since it has that red coat like michael Jackson from the 80's
i think i got what "trio the punch" was grammatically correct! a man named trio who is a bowl of fruit punch!
Any relation to Betty Bowl of Plastic Fruit?
I guess now we know where Naruto got that frog summoning thing idea from lol.
I don't know about this, that third guy is giving me the heebe geebes
It took me three days to watch this.
Hence the term Trio
This game feels like a giant shitpost
Or possibly a Creepypasta
omg miss karnof i need to re-play it
i reneber to by my first end hardes game as a kid it was so wiard i am suproce thet ther ist a japanises movie on this game or animeted movie
omg i love weird games haha
O hai guy from Rocked Reviews!
I can't believe I'm saying this but, "weird" might be too kind to this game.
huh huh headcannon
that was fucking absurd
And it’s glorious
data east moment💀
If you want something that will get 11/10, try Weird Dreams! That blows everything else out of the water for nonstop insanity.
SupremeColZod Hellz yeah! But apparently it's batshit hard.
Don't forget about the text from the NES version's instruction manual. I could type it out, but honestly, there's a better reading of it in the AGDQ speed run of the game, at 19:50
ua-cam.com/video/HfxJ238UNEg/v-deo.html
There's a NES version??? I'm getting it right now.
what's up cool video, weird definitely but if you want to see " beyond weird " check out Harvester for PC you will not be disappointed my friend. Arcade wise try out Guardians of the hood.
Am I the only one who just clicked on this cause chiaki referenced this game a lot of times
4:14 x D hey is the black bruce lee
13:34 W fist. Meaning wtf fist
13:45 😂
o.o
Well, I didn't want to sleep tonight, anyway....
only 306 likes for one of the best episodes?
beautiful
Today is this games Birthday, It was a joke all along
Does the moon actually hurt you in the "The Moon is your Friend" level?
Yes and no? It's one of those weird things in the game that squishes you. You do take damage but then you become tiny and then gain the ability to shoot projectiles, so it both hurts and helps.
This is nothin compared to cho aniki
the third guy looks like an Asian Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Remember kids: winners don't use drugs!!!
But then we wouldn’t get this awesome game
I called it.
Please do Stalin vs. Martians, Goat Simulator, Hong Kong 97, Seaman, and Sakura Taisen.
ITS KARNOV !!!
Karnov only cares for threee things:
Moneys💰💎👑💍
Food 🦖
And the wearing of no shirt!
Were Data East intoxicated when they made this game?
They were just Japanese, that's enough.
@@PrekiFromPoland I was not joking about Japanese people having bizzare tastes but asking if the employees at Data East were actually intoxicated during the production of this game.
Not that any of us know that and not that it matters.
I wish I actually could find out what was the idea behind this game, really. No interview known to me speaks about Trio The Punch though.
14:02 *Roblox intensifies*
TIS A TENOUTTATEN
28:22 Scrappy Mechanic?
10:10 Sans and Papyrus!
do a video of a game known as toki (multi platforms)
It's definitely on my list! In fact, in my livestreams I have an alert where Toki spits bubbles :D
have you heard of fantastic dizzy en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fantastic_Dizzy
I was wondering. Do you hate any of the games you have reviewed? I wanted to know because you never really say in your videos if the game is good or not.
+DaJoshy The goal of the show is to review based on how weird the game is so I purposely don't comment on whether the games are good or bad. A lot of the games I review I do really like, and some of them I really don't like. I think the one I liked the least is Revolution X. Fantasia was also pretty bad and so was Bazooka Bill. Jail Break and Karnov I would like better if they weren't so incredibly hard. Games I really enjoy are Penguin Adventure, Space Taxi, Captain Commando, and Puyo Puyo. The rest seem to fall somewhere in-between.
The funny thing is, I would put all three of the Moonwalker games in different categories of good/neutral/bad. The Genesis version is great. The arcade version is okay. The knockoff PC/Commodore/etc game is horrible.
Thanks for the response!
@@WeirdVideoGames Super late response. I wasn't able to properly word myself before and I wanted to follow this up with more than just a simple thanks. I guess what confused me was that you seemed to dislike games because they were weird. And I didn't feel like that was fair. Of course, now I know that it's all just for fun and jokes. However, when I was first watching your videos at age 10 or however old I was, it was a bit confusing for me. So, just wanted to clear that up. Honestly, I'm happy that there are so many weird games out there. Rather than ones that play things safe and use conventional settings and tropes and what not, the ones that are totally wacky and full of creativity are the ones that I really love. And hey, more weird games means more material for you to work with, right?
Also, glad that we can both agree on Space Taxi. It's probably one of my favorite C64 games.
