Some great points, many of which resonate.
I do appreciate that focusing on one aspect locks it in, but I'm at a point now where I can just pick up a guitar & enjoy playing it... So, more often than not, that's what I do, rather than actually practicing... I am slowly adding theory knowledge & techniques, but as I move forward, the motivations have changed from when I first started out... Recently, I've found playing at guitar jams & getting/giving tips with other guitarists has been a really positive thing to do.

Option paralysis is my BIGGEST problem. I recently got a teacher after 20 years of just messing around with the same shit and not getting better, and he doesn't help with this problem either. Every week he just throws new shit at me without checking how I'm doing with the shit he threw at me last week. I'm completely lost.

Same issue here. Found a tutor who was willing to write me a weekly practice checklist. Every week he gives me 3-4 daily practice objectives on a post it. I save all the post its on a page in my practice folder, so I can always go back to objectives I need refreshing on.

Just discovered you and I’m in process of quitting smoking. So, I’m ready. Modes are so easy, I wanna improvise and modulate at will with players who don’t listen to themselves when they jam with others. Like bro, I held down the rhythm for your Linear Pentatonic music, then my turn, and no Rhythm. You gotta hold it down before you melt faces. Hey, you ever let that Tele play Clean? Great Teacher, motivation and killer playing

Great video! Inspired me to finally fucking learn every note on the fretboard.
    Try this friends:
Find some way to randomly pick a note on the fretboard.
Start with just the first fret. Do this 300 times. Add the second fret and do those 300 times. Add the third fret and do those 300 times. Add the fourth fret and do those 300 times.
Not only do you notice that your exercise time per fret gets less with each addition but you will notice that the time it takes you to correctly identify the notes decreases even though you are adding more notes each round.
    Thanks B!!!

I felt this in my soul man. I’ve been playing guitar for 16 years but yet I feel like I somewhat stopped progressing years ago. Although I will say my vibrato has definitely improved and I’ve actually written some pretty damn good solos for my own songs. My biggest problem is I don’t play with other people due to anxiety.

Great resources that give a good methodology for progress are Frank Vignola’s Modern Method course on Truefire and Steve Herberman’s Fundamentals Checkpoint on Mike’s Master Classes. They’re both jazz guys but both courses provide solid fretboard orientation in a methodical and efficient way. Good roadmaps both.

Absolutely bang on with your "option paralysis" statement. Guilty as charged here. I must have hundreds of videos saved. I even get overwhelmed with my guitar classes with too much info so I recently decided to simplify. With the help of my instructor, we have built a plan in which I concentrate on only a few things right now. Theory, specifically scales and modes, chords and rhythm......and practice, practice, practice.
I have noticed an improvement with my playing already. 👍

7:18 NGL, great stuff to practice to get better at writing parts.
Also, what I have noticed about people who argue for NOT learning Theory ALWAYS say dumb shit like "Hendrix didn't know theory" or ""Eddie Van Halen didn't know theory". Apparently no one had the heart to tell those people that they aren't either of those players. And yes they even those guys knew some Music Theory even if they didn't know that's what it was called.

One really stupid and basic thing I realized with technique is that the pinky is the most important finger. You can have both the most and least tension created from that distance and helps the rest of your hand properly position itself.

When I started taking guitar lessons, my mom had told the teacher that I already knew stuff about guitar because she had assumed that I knew how to change chords and stuff like that. She thought this cause I was experimenting with it in my room pretty often. So when it came time to my first lesson the teacher didn’t teach me any basics. No open chords, no strumming patterns or anything. So the first song he taught me was “Smells Like Teen Spirit” and it was difficult to say the least. So now that I’ve stopped going there I’ve began learning the basics but now I’m stuck on where to put my fingers when I’m looking at tabs.

    Hey Brandon,
Hope all is good, I’m looking to try push myself to an intermediate level of playing after 2 years of strumming chords and just learning songs but more trying to extract the techniques
Could you maybe do a video on what one can do as I’m interested in theory (albeit do struggle to sight read) and quite happy to learn scales etc but it’s more an idea what can be done to push me and others.
I know 52 weeks for intermediate to advance so what would be a good way to go from beginner to intermediate so others can possibly join your course in the future

I never considered doing scales like you did. I've done it a bit but not as full scales but parts of scales. But thinking now if I'm doing box on 3-4 string why not break out of that and do the scale down back and up back. Then scales by intervals, music theory there. I like learning music theory. It's something I can do when I'm not physically practicing. Like after the I practiced and I want something else to do.
