Accountability after two days : Learned the pattern of the Dorian mode, I am practicing D Dorian for two days, I will practice the Dorian mode of all 12 keys!! 😊 After 4 day: While practicing the Dorian mode, I am also practicing the phrygian mode. Learned the formula for Ionian, Dorian and Phrygian. Ionian: Root, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh. Dorian: Root, second, flat third, fourth, fifth, sixth and flat seventh Phrygian: Root, flat second, flat third, fourth, fifth, flat sixth and flat seventh. 😊
Another explanation that helped me to understand the modes: Major scale / ionian mode intervals: whole step, whole step, half step, whole step, whole step, whole step, half step or WWHWWWH All subsequent modes use the same intervals, but they are shifted to the left. So the dorian intervals are WHWWWHW, the phrygian intervals are HWWWHWW and so on.

I've been practicing the grateful dead's dark star lately which is in A Mixolydian / E Dorian / D Major, which has helped me realize and build the muscle memory that Mixolydian flattens the major scale's 7th, while dorian flattens the 7th and 3rd, etc.

So I teach them 2 ways or what I call learning the modes liner or parallel. One is all the modes shapes in one key the other is them all being played from the same root.

Wow! I have to say , this man is probably the best guitar teacher out there. He is making informative videos for guitarists for free, imagine how good the 52Week guitar player program would be
f*ck man the 2nd level is unbearable. I mean it makes sense allright, It's just the Practice that gets me. It takes me forever to remember what set of accidentals is in which scale , so when im asked to play mixolydian off of the Aflat scale its not hard to figure out imma play E something, but I gotta remember that 1st 2nd and the 4th degree is flattened, so not only I have to remember how Aflat scale looks like, i need to move the notes around, and play them in correct order. I'm staring at fretboard I thought I knew and see an endless goddamn sea. The road is long. Thanks to you I can really learn to play. It's up to me now man. In 4 months Im gonna edit to say how Im doing
I was wondering the same thing! But looking at how dense it is for me to play through all 12 keys of 7 modes, If there are modes at different scales that go along harmonic and melodic minor scale I'll learn them all in my next lifetime lol
My dad went to berklee. Hed be so offended if he knew i was using ur videos over his berklee brain. Tbh hes just not good at teaching if you dont already know what hes tryna say. Like. Im a beginner! I dont know what i dont know!
Imma start learning this today and update y'all of the progress everyday For context, I can already play some slow solos on the pentatonic scale, I only practice one shape properly, the a minor pentatonic. Only yesterday, I've practiced the G major scale quite a few times after watching another video of Brandon Day 1: Practiced G ionion and Dorian, just played it like a hundred times each tryna get my fingers used to it Day 2: Practiced Phrygian and Mixolydian just like day 1, not too fast either, 60 bpm where I play 16th notes Day 3: got decent with all the 5 shapes, now practicing them over and over again to be able to play them at 80 Day 4: pretty much the same as yesterday, didn't feel like it but got some reps in Day 5&6 : Didn't practice much, even the time that I did, I was just annoyed that I could barely hit 70 bpm in all modes when I changed the key, I'm thinking of going to 60 and go on for a few days Day 7, 8, 9: I haven't practiced scales but played some songs, it was a fun jam Edit: I don't even remember which day it is, honestly I haven't been practicing much either for the past week or so, idek when I'll get back to it
Accountability: i have started guitar a while back , not more than 4 months , but i just started ACTUALLY trying to learn , i have downloaded your video and i watched it probably 4 times by now in the last 3 days , Day 1 : discovering wtf my guy is on about Day 2 : learning the major shape and practicing it till 4 am Day 3 : learning the dorian shape and practicing it for 3 hours
Day 4 : which is today , as in the day I wrote the first comment , I am practicing both the major and the Dorian with a 130 bpm metronome (with 2 notes each beat , so 260 notes/min) , I'm getting wayyyyy more comfortable with my guitar ( classical, though I'm begging my parents for a beautiful telly...) . Enough with the bs , I don't know the names of the notes yet , so I'll be watching that 5 minute video of the most epic guitar UA-camr ( Brandon OFC ) and I'll keep ya informed by editing this . Well , this is the edit , it's 3:14 am rn , and I ever watched the video again, O ly the first part though, and I finally understood that practice routine BC I didn't understand shot at first , so yeah , I still didn't learn the notes on the fretboard, I did try, watches arround 3 to 4 vids about it , but realised it's not that easy ... I'll try my best to do it tomorrow, hopefully I get it done . End of day 4
Day 5 and 6 : day 5 I felt like absolute dog shit , as I saw a short of the best guitar UA-camr ( Brandon d'eon OFC) that showed a lot of technical mistakes one can make , and guess what ? I was making all of those mistakes , it was discouraging as hell , and I even considered quitting, but I won't JUST LEAVE ! So I picked up my guitar ( classical btw... I hope to get a tele like my boi Brandon but I got no money...), enough BS , I worked in most of my mistakes , but one that I couldn't fix was my ring finger not rounding and smashing the strings , I was too weak , I'm still working on it Day 6 : more scales , I got better at the two first ones , and I added Phrygian , Im still learning it though rn , I'll work on it with a metronome after I learn it fully in 5 minutes , and I'll reply done when I finish it . Edit : done.
Nice job explaining modes in level 2. I find that the distortion you have set on your amp clouds the ability to hear the tones of each interval vs. If you just played clean tones.
Accountability : Started 25 days ago, level 3 since 20 days, level 5 since 13 days, level 6 since 6 days best times : Ionioan : 1:21 Dorian : 1:27 Phrygian : 1:30 Lydian : 1:36 Myxo : 1:32 Aeliane : 1:30 Locriane : 1:25 Modes every keys : 12:45 Modes 1 position : 3:32 3 NPS : 28:49 i guess my pinky is a bit flat sometimes and make me lose some control when i try to go fast
Even though I find your humor abrasive and unhelpful, the material you actually focused on was concise and thorough. I'm definitely going to come back to this video and work through the levels. Equating the modes to the major scale shapes was a eureka moment. I knew they were linked but didn't really understand how/why. Thanks for the video. Personally, I'd prefer less of the "ur dumb" humor, but that's just me.
I’m a big Eric Johnson fan and I try to visualize/use the fretboard like he does. It’s been rather difficult as I can see all of the pentatonics in all 12 the fretboard. But there is more to his pentatonics than that. But he can beautifully use a wider aperture of notes that aren’t just in the pentatonic scale. For the longest time I didn’t know where the notes came from but then the major scale started to make itself clear. It wasn’t just the major scale, but it was his mix of whatever mode was available to him near whatever pentatonic scale he was in. This video has helped me visualize the pentatonics in a more harmonious fashion. It’s been about two weeks and I can better recall intervals and I can see where I am on the fretboard with a greater degree of accuracy. I even got better at chord spellings which was always difficult. This video has put me one step closer to into understanding the anatomy of an Eric Johnson solo/ harmony. Thank you!
Another thing not to confuse....but if you are playing A aoli an on the 5 th string (anywhere really ) the E Phrygian is one string over A and D Dorian one string under.. same with C major ...5th always over root so G mixolydian is right over C and F lydian below it. Maybe you said that. I skipped several minutes. My old chain smoking ass did alright.
i understand level 2, but how come it says "shape 1" for ionian and locrian? how come the "shapes" dont match up with the same note? like for example, if B is the 7th note of c major, then why isnt it the 7th shape?
Your explanation of modes is simple and the best explanation I've seen. The practice routines are fab. You're quite funny as well. Excellent teacher. Thank you.
Okay. I practice for two weeks by now.I started playing with 100 bpm by quarters and I spent 15 minutes to play major scale accurately, after few days of exercises I decided to play by eights. but I needed to slow down to 80 bpm. And every few days I increased bpm by 10 until it wasn't 120 bpm, and then I decided to play by sixteens, but I also slowed down to 60 bpm. And now I play major scale for 7 minutes (today) by 16s notes and 60bpm (that's equals to 120 bpm if I played by 8s notes, or 240 bpm for quaters). I also started to play modes just to memorize it. I play one more mode every 3-4 day, using the same logic of practice as I use for major scale. Next two weeks I am going to grow up speed of major scale and memorize and practice all the modes. When I will be confident about all the modes for 120-130 bpm, I'll try to move to level 3 exersize, Thank you for useful masterclass
These exercises have made a huge difference. I do the 3 note per string one in all keys every day. I also do the triad arpeggio one in every key each day which wasn’t in this video! I’ll work in a couple more of these as they do really help in mastering every note of every key as well as each mode everywhere on the neck. Doing these backwards and on different strings is a great idea. Start that tomorrow. Thank you so much for this information!
Ok diva… Level 2 explanation is the best of modes I have ever seen. I never made the connection between modes and starting position. It seems so obvious now. Great work.
level 2 made sense! I finally understand modes thanks to you! Time to get to work on keys! Thank you, Brandon! Been lost on the fretboard forever (10ish years, shoulda learned a long time ago) and finally understand how it works
I didn’t comment “accountability” because I hadn’t gotten that far in the video. It was immediately apparent to me that I had to spend some time on Levels 2 and 3. So I did. For 2 weeks. Every day. In that time I: - Went from 80 bmp up to 93 bpm and then back down to 85. I make enough mistakes that I’d rather not rush through the exercises. 85 is the sweet spot though I might go up 1 or 2 next week. - Saw my times all over the place. Some of my times at 85 were faster than the same scales at 93. - Had my worst day on Day 14. Sure, it was mostly better than Week 1, but almost all of my times on Day 8, also at 85 bpm, were faster than Day 14. - Memorized a fookload of positions. For Level 3 I no longer need a cheat sheet to see what note/position to start on. This really came together in the last 3 days. - Changed picks. I’m 42, have been playing with red jazz picks since age 16. Switched to Dunlop Ultex in the last week which has changed the feel of everything (long term for the better I can already tell). Plan is to forego Level 2 and work on Levels 3 and 4 for the next 2 weeks. We’ll see where that takes me.
Ionian is the major scale, Lydian is #4, Mixolydian is b7; Aolian is Natural Minor with b3/b6/b7, for Dorian it’s just b3/b7, for Phrygian it’s b2/b3/b6/b7. So 3 major modes, and 3 minor modes. Mode 7 is Locrian for a Diminished chord because it’s the only mode with b5 (b2-b3-b5-b6-b7). - Memorize all 7 formulas. Play all 7 modes starting from the SAME NOTE; that’s the best way to learn to hear them. Just starting them on different notes of the same scale will slow you learning to hear them; start all 7 modes from the same note.
Im a student at UFRGS (Brazilian University) in Popular Brazilian Music (mpb) and this video is a 10/10 everyone should watch(and practice). Now GET OUT AND GO PRACTICE(sry for the bad english)
This is on kind of rudimentary level. You didn't even touch on how one unlocks the distinct tonal changes focusing on the different modes unlocks. You woudn't have a video on that perchance? I have been playing this scale up and down mindlessly for long enough.
Just passing through the stup*d b*tch section. Pros: - Great Technical Exercise for speed, muscle memory, and hand synchronization using all the positions - involves two 7 pattern / visualization method - Great 'thought process' exercise to find the mode relative to a key - no cigarettes Cons: - Concept of Modes is oversimplified imo as a student. I wish there were more about context, perhaps some exercises for harmony; chord progressions, scale degree emphasis ( flavor notes or interval etc) instead of positional emphasis - A mode is associated to a position on the neck Suggested Vids to complement this video: "Frank Gambale MNMM" (Modes No More Mystery) QJamTracks' video on "Daily PRACTICE ROUTINES and EXERCISES for SCALES & MODES"

I'm sorry if this question sounds stupid but I've never studied music theory and Google doesn't really answer this question well. When you're explaining scales and such, why do you sometimes used sharp to signify a note, and sometimes you use flat to signify. My brain wants to think it would be easier to always notate it one specific way but I also don't know what I'm talking about, lmao. -Level 2 made sense.

Accountability for level 2 of this masterclass with melodic minor modes 3 notes per string.
I'll apply this to the harmonic minor modes as well.
I use this video for my routines at least a couple times a week. Thanks for the insight/instruction.
Everything is explained great anyone who complains is def on cigarettes
If you're like me and computers kill the vibe make decks of cards you can shuffle and draw from
Aeolian = Natural Minor Mode :)
Imma start learning this today and update y'all of the progress everyday
For context, I can already play some slow solos on the pentatonic scale, I only practice one shape properly, the a minor pentatonic. Only yesterday, I've practiced the G major scale quite a few times after watching another video of Brandon
Day 1: Practiced G ionion and Dorian, just played it like a hundred times each tryna get my fingers used to it
Day 2: Practiced Phrygian and Mixolydian just like day 1, not too fast either, 60 bpm where I play 16th notes
Day 3: got decent with all the 5 shapes, now practicing them over and over again to be able to play them at 80
Day 4: pretty much the same as yesterday, didn't feel like it but got some reps in
Day 5&6 : Didn't practice much, even the time that I did, I was just annoyed that I could barely hit 70 bpm in all modes when I changed the key, I'm thinking of going to 60 and go on for a few days
Day 7, 8, 9: I haven't practiced scales but played some songs, it was a fun jam
Edit: I don't even remember which day it is, honestly I haven't been practicing much either for the past week or so, idek when I'll get back to it
Me too I'll also start today
Accountability: i have started guitar a while back , not more than 4 months , but i just started ACTUALLY trying to learn , i have downloaded your video and i watched it probably 4 times by now in the last 3 days ,
Day 1 : discovering wtf my guy is on about
Day 2 : learning the major shape and practicing it till 4 am
Day 3 : learning the dorian shape and practicing it for 3 hours
I hope to get a tele like my boi Brandon but I got no money...), enough BS , I worked in most of my mistakes , but one that I couldn't fix was my ring finger not rounding and smashing the strings , I was too weak , I'm still working on it
Day 6 : more scales , I got better at the two first ones , and I added Phrygian , Im still learning it though rn , I'll work on it with a metronome after I learn it fully in 5 minutes , and I'll reply done when I finish it .
Edit : done.
Day 7 and 8 : more major scale patterns , one each day , and today I'll learn em all BC I'm tired ASF and I wanna get this done asap
Learnt the whole major scale now , YIPPIEEE ! time to practice 💀( " it's just a burning memory" starts playing 💀💀💀)
It's alright we starting together now
Nice job explaining modes in level 2. I find that the distortion you have set on your amp clouds the ability to hear the tones of each interval vs. If you just played clean tones.
level 2 made sense a lot
fucking hell!!! i at last understood it
thank you so much mate for the help....... means a lot
I appreciate you. I can’t afford lessons right now, but these videos are more than enough. Someday I’m going to enroll, I started saving.

All the best bud
Even though I find your humor abrasive and unhelpful, the material you actually focused on was concise and thorough. I'm definitely going to come back to this video and work through the levels. Equating the modes to the major scale shapes was a eureka moment. I knew they were linked but didn't really understand how/why.
Thanks for the video. Personally, I'd prefer less of the "ur dumb" humor, but that's just me.
I second this notion. He needs to GET OFF THE CIGARETTES!
I really appreciate the re-upload man, I was worried I lost a good practice method. Thanks dude! This video is a gem!
And, more importantly, F R E E!
Level 2 made sense! Now just need hundreds of hours of reps then proceed with level 3. This is great, thanks!
Level 2 for melodic minor modes 3 notes per string passed successfully. Now, accountability for level 3, same scale modes.
i understand level 2, but how come it says "shape 1" for ionian and locrian? how come the "shapes" dont match up with the same note? like for example, if B is the 7th note of c major, then why isnt it the 7th shape?
Because the shapes for ionian and locrian are so similar, there's really no need to add more confusion by having 7 shapes rather than 5.
thank you very much for doing this!!!!
LEVEL 2 MADE SENSE
Level 2 made sense ❤
Your explanation of modes is simple and the best explanation I've seen. The practice routines are fab. You're quite funny as well. Excellent teacher. Thank you.
Level 2 made sense if you don't think so get of the cigarettes
After 2 hours and writing all the fretboard notes on paper and all the modes one by one, I finally understood, what you meant in level 2.
Accountability
gear up, time to practice again
When I will be confident about all the modes for 120-130 bpm, I'll try to move to level 3 exersize,
Thank you for useful masterclass
@@ladylinkon3916 ACCOUNTABILITY! Nice progress btw
Ok 3rd time watching, level 2 made sense
These exercises have made a huge difference. I do the 3 note per string one in all keys every day. I also do the triad arpeggio one in every key each day which wasn’t in this video! I’ll work in a couple more of these as they do really help in mastering every note of every key as well as each mode everywhere on the neck. Doing these backwards and on different strings is a great idea. Start that tomorrow. Thank you so much for this information!
Level two made sense as a stupid person I can confirm😘
Ok diva… Level 2 explanation is the best of modes I have ever seen. I never made the connection between modes and starting position. It seems so obvious now. Great work.
i dont understand english but level 2 make sence
level 2 made sense! I finally understand modes thanks to you! Time to get to work on keys! Thank you, Brandon! Been lost on the fretboard forever (10ish years, shoulda learned a long time ago) and finally understand how it works
Level 2 made sense 😮
i didnt expect that level 3 was THAT hard
lvl 2 made sense!
Level 2 made sense (I’ve been playing guitar for almost a decade and bass for a year) 🤘🏼
I didn’t comment “accountability” because I hadn’t gotten that far in the video. It was immediately apparent to me that I had to spend some time on Levels 2 and 3. So I did. For 2 weeks. Every day. In that time I:
- Went from 80 bmp up to 93 bpm and then back down to 85.
Is there a version of this but, slower? Sorry if this is a redundant question. Not quite here yet.
UA-cam has an option to slow down videos, try that out. Hopefully it helps c:
Bro I think I got it!!!! Lesson 2!!!!!
Now I just gotta know what to practice to hone the skill n make it real n not just mental
I just love you man
Stay as you are :)
These videos are amazing Brandon thank you so much
Level two made perfect sense.
Thank god for the reupload
I was in the deadass middle of the lesson when you deleted it and i was so upset lol

Level 2 made sense!!!
That's another video

LEVEL 2 MADE A LOT OF SENSE
This is on kind of rudimentary level. You didn't even touch on how one unlocks the distinct tonal changes focusing on the different modes unlocks. You woudn't have a video on that perchance? I have been playing this scale up and down mindlessly for long enough.
Just passing through the stup*d b*tch section.
Pros:
- Great Technical Exercise for speed, muscle memory, and hand synchronization using all the positions
- involves two 7 pattern / visualization method
- Great 'thought process' exercise to find the mode relative to a key
- no cigarettes
Cons:
- Concept of Modes is oversimplified imo as a student. I wish there were more about context, perhaps some exercises for harmony; chord progressions, scale degree emphasis ( flavor notes or interval etc) instead of positional emphasis
- A mode is associated to a position on the neck

Such a lovely young man.
Damn. I don't know whether or not to just download this in case it vanishes again. 😂
level two made sense
now i understand level 2
I'm sorry if this question sounds stupid but I've never studied music theory and Google doesn't really answer this question well. When you're explaining scales and such, why do you sometimes used sharp to signify a note, and sometimes you use flat to signify. My brain wants to think it would be easier to always notate it one specific way but I also don't know what I'm talking about, lmao. -Level 2 made sense.
level 2 made sense ive watched this section for the past 5 days and practied every day if i dont suck one day you can have my soul
