- A BBC News Arabic investigation has uncovered systemic child abuse and evidence of sexual abuse inside Islamic schools in Sudan.
For 18 months, reporter Fateh Al-Rahman Al-Hamdani filmed inside 23 schools across the country.
Boys as young as five-years-old were routinely chained, shackled and beaten by the sheikhs or religious men in charge of the schools.
Mohamed Nader is one of those who was abused. He was imprisoned and tortured for five days, and received such a brutal beating that he nearly died.
Al-Hamdani spoke to him about what happened, his recovery, and his family's fight for justice in a country where the sheikhs still wield huge power and influence.

They were probably unaware until recently? Like the documentary said the education is free (perhaps its state funded). But it seems the real story is in a simple nutshell that the leaders of this school simply live in luxury off the money they get and for whatever reason choose to abuse the kids.
This is not Islam. And as a Sudanese person I want to tell you that this is the result of the previous dictatorship in the country run by Omar al Bashir. Now that we are a democracy we will make sure these things are abolished

If they knew you were coming, they just hid it. Oddly enough, a horse trainer gave me the best advice you'll ever hear about catching abuse. "If they think you're going to arrive at 10 am. Arrive at 9. That way they can't catch the horse and drug it before selling it to you as tame." In other words. Don't give them time to hide the evils they're doing.
I really think instead of hoping Allah would punish them, maybe you or people like you should do something to save the name of your beloved religion.

Learning Islam isn't a problem it's a form of spirituality. What you're seeing in this video isn't Islamic at all. Should kids learn about spirituality? I think they should be but it shouldn't replace normal education I would rather it be an extra curricular activity

The khalwa- a place where devoted sufis attend to perform hours of dhikr and report on visions, dreams of god/unseen. Only a devoted sufi can attend who follows strict sharia, and the sufi sheikh has to specifically invite them once the sufi has spent years being devout in their practice. What we have here is spiritual abuse and emotional/physical abuse which violates sharia and should be abolished as the prophet saws never hit anyone with more than a gentle hit with a twig.
From gymnastic coaches to priests... it’s sadly not so surprising that this happened in a school of another religion. Thanks to the BBC journalists for their braver and persistence. .

What exactly is 'islamic language' and what is outside the box your religion? In the above documentary no one is trying to make you accept anything they are highlighting the case of what goes on in one country which is the chaining and beating of children in these Kalwas. There are lots of issues with the country mentioned and they are mostly cultural and due to ignorance and poverty pls don't paint everything as having its root in religious dogma, which no doubt has a part to play, as there are other elements at Play. For example lack of critical thinking and being able to question any dogma, that you believe in, if something doesn't sit right with you. Violence against children has for a very long time been acceptable in this country and parents often deliver their children up to teachers in some schools with the saying 'take the meat and give me back the bones' - discipline the child so they learn at any cost.

we may be appalled, outraged or even disgusted by those images of chained, whipped and beaten kids. but we should keep in mind Sudan is a poor country, the khalwas are religious schools of a sort you can find all over the world where education of the masses is still very basic and seldom more than just learning to read the bible, quran or a similar book. The teachers rarely have any formal training to speak of and all they can think to maintain discipline is to mete out punishments.
but before you condemn all this as barbaric, please remember it has not been that long ago children in our institutions were beaten with a stick or raped/sexually molested by trusted clergymen. we may be just a few decades ahead of Sudan and other such places.

This just reminds me of what happened to my anscestors when residential schools forced natives to stop speaking their native language. Forced into bible study and beaten by nuns. My grandma on my moms side ( my nanuk ) endured such. It ruined our family. I wish someone would stop this forced religion issue that is so brutally real.

Talking about the abuse of indigenous children in Canadian residential schools run by religious groups to literally beat Christianity into children torn from their parents and locked up in these cruel schools you use the word 'ancestors' which makes it all seem like a long time ago. The last Residential School in Canada was closed as recently as 1996. And in many other ways the abuse of Native people and of their children continues. Canada is a wonderful country but we still have a lot of room for improvement.
