Exodus made by Archetype Entertainment is on its way to fill the hole left by Mass Effect. Humanoid Origin is also making a sci-fi game. Both studios are spearheaded by Old Guard Bioware veterans. Hopefully, one, if not, both studios will make a fantasy(dark fantasy) IP to fill the hole left by Dragon Age Origins(and 2) at some point in the future.
People wanted a return to DA:O not DA2. Ever since Baldur's Gate 3 came out BioWare needed to return to the DA:O style of WRPG gameplay. Newer DA fans won't care as much as the DA veterans.
@perfectcelle371 I think his review is from the perspective of a DA fan. Similar to how FO4 was a great game critically, but disappointed many of its fans.
@@nickstark8479idk, i never played a DA game. yet, from gameplay alone, it looked boring, not the animations mind you, but seeing different reviews with different gameplay and classes yet all of them doing the same 2-3 attacks againg and again made me realize that what one of them said was true, there are many skills but they're just not worth using. Also i did saw that the difficulty is based on how much hp the enemies have and not on more frenetic reactive gameplay. Also the bosses looked boring, they were cool visually but they patterns looked pretty much the same, which was something the reviewer i mentioned before pointed out too. So, though i've not played it, i'm inclined to say it's a pretty mediocre game and i'm saying that without even mentioning the narrative and interactions of the characters with each other
No game will ever give me chills like Origin's opening quote: "And so the Golden City is blackened with each step you take in My hall. Marvel at perfection, for it is fleeting. You have brought sin to Heaven and doom upon all the world." That's a game that means BUSINESS.
This was the one of the best mechanics to ever be introduced to RPGs, it adds so much bonding old games just couldn't in a shorter time DAO is probably the first game I remember doing this. Or Mass Effect 1 but I remember they didn't pull it off nearly as well and basically just elevator scenes
It’s something I wish they did in Pathfinder WOTR. There are lots of friction points and camaraderie amongst your crew in that, but it only comes up when resting or scripted.
they must've gotten rid of that dialogue or something, because my friend and I played Origins on ps3 and made that into an inside joke, but when I played it again on Xbox one my character never said it once, and I did the same set-up.
@@zoy_sause8520 This is one thing i love about DAO, i always play cocky female voice, but whenever i switch it up its hilarious and cool to see almost every choice change to some degree, in tone or writing sometimes completely it really makes the game super replayable.
I can't even imagine current Bioware letting Morrigan say "now we have a dog, and Alistair is still the stupidest one in the party". Let alone anything darker than that.
No. They're too squeamish about even blood to ever do anything dark and edgey now. It reminds of listening to vtmb2 devs talking about vtmb. They say they love the original but everything about it is problematic. If you love it, why would you passionately block it from ever getting made today? This is the state of the industry. If you want complex stories or gore, sex and dark themes, you have to go retro
I might be weird in this but I even like the combat a lot. I always tried to perfect the tactics system to make it so I could play on nightmare mostly controlling the pc without much issue
Yea veilguard feels so tonally and artistically different from origins that I can’t even think of them as being part of the same series. In my head cannon, there is only Origins, BioWare never made any sequels. Would be cool if they did though.
If bioware does it, they will rewrite the entire game, change all the hot women into manly girl bosses who hate men, and all the men will be the butt of every joke. Every unfunny joke that has poor timing.
I started up Origins again last night and tried out the city elf origin for the first time and I can say current Bioware wouldn’t have the balls to address the dark themes present in that origin. On top of that the writing, characters, tone and overall vibe of the game is perfect and a big part of why that game has stuck with me so long. It feels like a completely different and better series than Veilguard.
Having just played Origins myself, and now playing veil guard the difference in tone is kind of shocking. When characters in DAO say something, they feel like a part of the world and believe what they're saying. With veilguard I feel like I'm watching a Saturday morning cartoon. They talk about serious things, but always with a wink and a nod, like everyone knows it's all going to work out in the end.
they moved from that style of choice due to ME. they saw gamers ar retarded (and they are) and went with the easy option. BG3 is popular now but i bet you a lot of ppl never plaied the original games from the studio or even Wrath or Pillars for that matter.
Just returned to Origins myself having not played it probably a decade. Absolutely having a blast, and it's been long enough that it almost feels like playing it over for the first time. It's funny that some people think it's exaggeration how much better these games used to be, but you only have to go back and play them to realise just how true it is.
I'm doing the same and have been keeping at least one older game in my cycle of played games. They really do hit different man. Having so much fun role playing with all the choices
Dragon Age Origins and Final Fantasy 12 were the games that got me into RPGs, now I know Final Fantasy 12 is not everybody favorite but there was something that just clicked for me. I think it is about time I gave both of those a playthrough as like you I haven't replayed them for more than a decade.
People who talk about nostalgia goggles do not get that while graphics and mechanics may age and become obsolete, writing does not. That is where older games win by a huge margin.
Please don't give in to online hate. Your reviews are pure honesty and the people who actually watch your videos respect that. Keep up the good work and always tell it like it is even if the online mob hates your "negativity".
Any form of hate is bad. As it is true to state your opinion like Matty did, is ok on itself. I do think though, that if you turn it around, people who are genuinely liking Veilguard get loads of hate as well. It feels like in today’s world, there isn’t any room for different opinions. And you get called out if you like something. It all depends on expectations, some people are gonna dislike or like something based on expectations. But, it is known that negativity sells. This channel is one of the few exceptions who came forth genuinely.
its funny to me. dragon age as a franchise for me died after origins. Divinity series, pillars of eternity, and most notably baldurs gate 3 have all provided that same depth if not more and have become almost spiritual successors to DAO
@@Teo_live it's really good but it's not at all an easy one to learn. You really need to study pathfinder just about to understand the game. But if you do, it's very very good. Same developer: Warhammer 40K Rogue trader is excellent. Currently playing it and it's all the same kind of stuff just in the grim dark universe of Warhammer 40K
@@synth_pulse3098 Well ive just been playing on easier difficulties just for the story and ive really loved Pf WOTR, so i think it also deserves to go with games like BG3 and PoE.
@moonie9000 Good writing is timeless. It’s why classic films like twelve angry men are still highly regarded today. As for games, a good gameplay loop matters but something like Origins, its writing holds up incredibly well. It goes to show why BioWare became the power house in western gaming. And why so much of modern BioWare and triple AAA gaming just sucks. It’s also why outside stuff like space marines 2 black myth Wukong; I always go back to older titles like this. Time is too short to waste on modern games that can’t even nail fundamentals like good gameplay loops, fixing major bugs and writing.
I'm one of those people who like to say we lost a lot writing and world building going from ME1 to ME2. That while the gameplay may not feel nice ME1 might have been the soupier RPG and probably the height of Bioware's story telling. Just going through all the dialog options to setup the world in the first 20 minutes before you land on the first planet is eye opener compared to stuff today. You would have also thought that the Witcher 3 would make good writing and character presentation popular but it seems all other studios took from the game was the camera work during dialogue and ignored the good writing bit.
eh dragon age origins is reallllll rough on PC. crashy as hell hud doesnt scale properly and its pretty ugly compared to a game like Mass Effect. Personally, I'm playing Veilguard and digging it, as a game, not necessarily a dragon age game.
@@COUNTVLAIDMIR I mean, it needs a little work to make it run smoothly, BUT it is an old game. But way better than most games released today. Playing Mahariel right now.
Its like that with 99% of game franchises now. I literally cant think of a modern version of a 'franchise' game that is better than the some of the original games.
@ If you think criticism towards what I find to be poor dialogue and just unrealistic interactions between characters as “Edgy” I think you need to get off the internet for a while.
This was also back in the day when english voiceacting (for English games) was still pretty good and we had a ton of people like Claudia Black that were just enthuasiastic to voice characters. These days its all so fake-acted.
DA:O is timeless, because it is wholly committed to its own dark fantasy and lets nothing get in the way of making you face down the gritty reality that Ferelden is dealing with. It presents you with dilemmas that are genuinely hard, and often asks your character to pick sides that are, in their own ways, equally questionable on many levels, because the situation demands action and the 'perfect solution' isn't on the table. It doesn't ask you which solution your character might prefer (or even whose "side" they're on), instead it asks you which consequences your character must be willing to shoulder; what sins they are willing to bear in the name of stopping an existential threat. DA:2, while it struggled due to its short development cycle and hasty push out the door, managed to maintain that grit and tone, and still rings true as a part of the Dragon Age world. Inquisition stumbled in execution of its scope, but largely managed to at least keep its toes on the ground. Each of them have issues because the 'real world' was interfering, either directly in the case of DA:2, or philosophically in DA:I. This is why DA:O will remain timeless. Because it shoves the "real world" out, and lets the setting define its own reality on its own terms.
I really liked DA:O because, even though it was dark and gritty, it wasn’t nihilistic. It didn’t do what a lot of prestige media does and pander the message of “Life is shit, you should be one too.” Characters who are ultra-ruthless are ultimately self-destructive just like idealists who refuse to accept reality. The idea that only the most merciless, treacherous, and manipulative can succeed is even more annoying than a pure Pollyanna story. Plus, it had a good dog. 😁
Every developer decision made that went against origin in the pursuit to appeal to a bigger audience & increase revenue while cutting developmental cost is exactly what paved the road for Larian Studio’s success with BG3.
@wasn’t referring to woke ideology, BioWare EA have been alienating their player base long before woke was a thing. Woke is the most recent fad & it is preemptive avoidance bs social drama that’s been plaguing everyone since canceling became a thing.
This is true, your companions are cooldowns in Veilguard just like Mass Effect, but in previous DA games you could switch to them in combat. I liked playing as Solas and Leliana for the mage and rogue gameplay. You can't do that now, it's simplified and dumbed down.
Still the best star Wars game for me and it's not even close, even though I loved the X-Wing and TIE fighter games, KoTOR is brilliant even though it's over 20 years old.
Dragon age origins is by far the best in the series and an amazing game. I think if the people who don’t understand why there are some many critics to modern dragon age went back and played it, half of them would understand where the critics are coming from. It is a masterpiece in storytelling
I think Alistair kind of makes the game too, I thought that character was made exceptionally well. One of the few games where I did a run as a female grey warden just to see the romance angle there. That did not disappoint either
I complete Dragon Age: Origins and Awakening more than 10 times. Dragon Age 2 around 5-8 times. Dragon Age Inquisition more than 5 times. And Dragon Age Origins is still my favorite game in this series. I will definitely not play The Veilguard mainly because of three reasons: 1. You don’t have full control over your companions. I love strategy games where you can create different team composition (more tanky, more CC, all DPS etc.) and try different builds for them. 2. So far that I have seen dialogues are not appalling to me. I love more rough adult language and also world don’t seems dark survival horror enough. 3. Qunari models look terrible (my favorite models were in Dragon Age 2). Yeah someone could say: Then don’t play with Qunari. But problem is that I will come across with NPSs and this would make me angry 100%. Maybe one day if we will have heavily modified version of game…
The fact that a game from 2009 is better than a game in 2024 that cost multiple times more is what saddens me the most. Please bring back games like Dragon Age: Origins, Mass Effect 2, The Suffering, Champions of Norrath, and Borderlands 2.
There is nothing "special" in the fact that a game from 2009 is better than those of 2024. Games are about characters and stories and that doesn't cost that much to hire a team of 4 or 5 people to do this job. But if your "creative team of 4 or 5 people" are activists and don't respect the IP and the customers then ...Veilguard happens.
Hey brother Im glad your next video came out. You are one of my most trusted game reviewers. Your stuff is so informative and you give unbiased stuff even to the point of correcting yourself lol. But your Veil guard review definitely saved me some money 💰. It definitely let me know that the things I was wanting the most in the game were either changed or not there at all. Anyways I appreciate everything you do and can't wait to see more reviews.
Origins was mind blowingly detailed. There were so many little and big things that made everything so special and real and immersive. I've played it like 10 times and it's crazy that after 3 or 4 runs you still find totally new things and connections. Not another lootbox but entire plotlines or connections. It's AMAZING.
The dialogue options from Veilguard remind me of the controversy with Fallout 4. You had a more simple UI that catered to casuals, and the dialogue options for every conversation was not what was said by the main character.
It was the worst part of F4, but (and I know this is an unpopular opinion) as someone that played F1 and F2 first, I think F4 was better than F3.... The writing of F3 was even worse than F4.
Playing a dwarven rogue, exiled from my country and family just to find a new one with Alistar a true friend, Our dear Mabari war hound, Leliana with helping her deal with her past so that she can stand on her feet, Morrigan she was hard to deal with at first but she would probably say the same thing about us breaking the ice and getting to really know her was special, Oghren a drunk a brawler and my dwarven brother, Sten another like me he was sent off his home learning about the way of Quanari people, helping him atone it was truly an honour, Wynne always cautious and wanting to do good, she had her reasons, protecting mages when everyone thinks they are unstable, not wanting for the purge to happen was a heavy burden, Zevran he had a hard life growing up in brothel, he learnt well that he wasn't the only one with a tough upbringing when he tried to assassinate us and it backfired, rarely jugmental he had a hard time being a part of something that didn't treat him as a tool but he tried his best with his constant jokes. Lastly Shale, her story for me as a dwarf was something else, I felt sad for her loosing so much of herself, but also I was amazed at the work of our ancestors so little of our people was left to stand next to Shale brought courage to me that maybe not everything is lost for us.
What games, outside of maybe souls game, do you actually know and CARE about your hub merchant. Finding our little weapon enchanter in the last room full of slaughtered dark spawn (high level ones too) just to ask us “Enchanting?” Had a chill run down my spine. Glad he’s on my side lol.
The crazy thing is Bioware did the inclusive thing with shale back then. She was essentially an unspoken non-binary character. They just did it tactfully and didn't spoon feed us with a shovel. It all comes down to proper writing.
@@animegamergeek1427 no, he means that it's the only Dragon Age that matters in the all-time-greats list of rpgs. You can like DA2, you can love Inquisition... But there's just one masterpiece here
First day, they come and catch everyone. Second day, they beat us and eat some for meat. Third day, the men are all gnawed on again. Fourth day, we wait and fear for our fate. Fifth day, they return and it's another girl's turn. Sixth day, her screams we hear in our dreams. Seventh day, she grew as in her mouth they spew. Eighth day, we hated as she is violated. Ninth day, she grins and devours her kin. Now she does feast, as she's become the beast. Now you lay and wait, for their screams will haunt you in your dreams.
Origins is a 10/10 game, and it's only gotten worse with every sequel released. Every release strays farther and farther from the game we fell in love with.
I still remember DAO fondly to this day. Dragon Age: Inquisition however gave me the sort of cognitive dissonance I had on seeing The Force Awakens and then reading the gushing reviews. And like the last Star Wars movie, I'm not even going to bother with the latest entry.
Awakening is a great DLC, it introduces Anders, and is why quite a few people didn't like what Bioware did to Anders in DA 2. Does Veilguard even have the murderknife?
@@imo098765 His story is a tough one. But against of what he is in Awakening he became sad and boring in many aspects. This can be the influence of Justice, but then it's a good reminder not to let in any boring entities
That's when the wokeness started with DA2 sadly. They changed the super awesome unqiue race in the Qunari to a basically a Tiefling knock off, because they had pale skin.
@@conorgillespie7832 I'd say DA2 still had the qunari as a unique race. Other than giving them horns, they have nothing in common with tieflings or their portrayal in DnD. Once you hit Inquisiton, they softened the Qun a bit, and Veilguard just threw all characterizations (cultural and aesthetical) in the trash.
Nah I find it has a different feel tbh, I don't think anything feels the same but maybe witcher 2 (and I don't mean the gameplay but just the "vibe" of the game lol I hate using that word.)
@@charaznable8072 I do see some similarities. The dialogue cinematics, though after DA: O many RPG's were doing this. And the "armies" at the end battles.
@@charaznable8072 The game is very similar but also very different. BG3 minus the dice rolls is what I expect a Bioware from 15 years ago to make if they had to make Origins today It may not have all the choices like BG3 has but all the major plot and mission changing ones. It will have those
We didn't know how good we had it with Origins, such a gem. I wish we could time travel and bring all old BioWare, Bathesda, Ubisoft, CDPR... Developers back to our time line and put them in charge of these new projects. The industry will crash until they focus on what is most important and that is good story telling, gameplay, fun...
Origins is my favorite game. I also love the combat system. Morrigan is my favorite companion, and I love having Alistair in the party and let the 2 of them have at it. Everyone is memorable
DAO is one of my favourite games of all time. I loved those quiet moments in the camp with your companions. The first time Lilliana sang to you. The dark fantasy LOTR feeling world you were in. When I revisited it, the first thing I noticed was the quality of music, voice acting, and writing. 10/10 to this day.
Exactly this. Writing is the single most important thing in games, RPG at least. If you have good story and characters, your game can be a dialog simulator like Disco Elysium and people will still love it. If you have poor writing and characters, nothing can hide it.
12:50 Awakening for me, having recently played it for the first time, is what blood and wine is to witcher 3. Giving a whole new handful of areas to explore, more grey wardens, giving new compelling characters that i loved as much as the original cast, complex antagonists that made you think beyond the black and white of certain factions, last but not least small decsisions that made big impacts in the grand scheme of the ending.
Never buy on the 1rst day. Always wait at least a month. Not only because you get a chace to check reviews or gameplays, but also patches (games now always release unfinished).
Appreciate ya Matty, keep it going! You've matured a lot over the past decade (not everyone does), and it shows in how you dealt with the leak drama on twitter.
Dragon age origins was amazing. That last battle took me like two hours and it was the culmination of all of my actions and efforts, it came together stunningly. I'd go so far as to say that they did a better job with the final battle of dragon age origins than they did with the end of mass effect three
If Bioware remade DAO they’d make a load of $$. Unfortunately since old BioWare is nothing like new BioWare they’d probably tone down the game a lot and make it much nicer in the name of making it more “modern”.
DAO was unreal, I played it back then not really expecting anything and i was blown away. The world building, the characters, the perfect difficulty level. That you can not just combine any group of people for your team, they have to morally align in a way. Your decision seemed to have real consquences. With Gothic 2 and Witcher 3 one of the best RPGs ever.
Just downloaded this on to the laptop before I take off to Asia for a couple months. Been awhile since I've had a real playthrough so I'm pumped. The first 5 years or so after it released I must have played through it 10 times at least.
Vast majority of the global population including vast majority of people of colors agree with your review, stay strong and resist these "modern audience" backlash which accounts 10% of global populations.
@@fullstackweebdev yep, never seen a more deluded comment lol. People are enjoying it, it's not a perfect game but has enough positives that people are enjoying it for now.
I was just listening to the Dragon Age: Origins soundtrack and this video popped up!😄 I'd forgotten how good the music in that game was, none of the sequels was able to live up to it.
You should try DAO with mods, they fix a ton of bugs, improve balance, add QOL, texture quality etc. You can play DAO remastered thanks to the community.
3:18 I kind of had that experience with Mass Effect. My first experience with a Mass Effect game was actually Andromeda. Then I played the remastered original trilogy. And when I was done benjing that because because of how amazing it was I thought to myself, well, why don't I play Andromeda again? Then I realized why people don't like Andromeda. I couldn't even force myself to go through the tutorial mission.
Against thе DAO, both parts of KOTOR feel a bit clumsy due to the mechanics of the sides of the Force. Just because I don't act like a sociopath doesn't mean I'm a good person. Leave my Force scale alone, game, I just want to use Dark Side abilities (this problem is mitigated by Charisma, but still). But KOTOR is still a great series of games
If you like Dragon Age: Origins I would highly recommend KotOR and Jade Empire. KotOR has a phenomenal story that will suck you right in but I think Jade Empire has more fun combat/gameplay and more romance options (and still a great story even if it's a bit shorter). Plus, while I do enjoy KotOR's soundtrack, Jade Empire's soundtrack is incredible.
Dragon Age Origins will forever and always be my favorite fantasy RPG. I remember playing it so many years ago when it was relatively new. I cannot begin to express how amazing this game is playing it the first time.
If somebody could give Dragon Age: Origins the same remake/remaster treatment/polish as the RE games or even Dead Space, I could definitely see it out performing Veilguard in sales.
@@Kris.Gthat’s the thing. Just like the dragon age franchise, there’s a split between old fans and new fans for fallout. You can like fallout 3 and 4 but the reason the New Vegas guys rag on it so much is because what fallout is to them, is fundamentally different from what fallout is to the newer bethesda fans. Writing-wise and in terms of player agency and role playing elements, the older Fallouts 1, 2 and NV are just objectively leagues more advanced and mature than what bethesda produced. To the “NV guys” that is what fallout is, to them, fallout 3 and 4 are Dragon age Inquisition and Veilguard respectively.
@@thebigenchilada678 Here's the thing... I don't hate NV. It was just boring and pretentious most of the time. Despite that I don't go to every NV video and say it was shit and all that, which is what FNV puritans do. There's a clear divide where one side just enjoys some games and the other side can't help but whine about it. FNV fanboys are like vegans.
I think BG3 is a prime example that people want games to return to the old ways, in more ways than one. What’s crazy is when these AAA developers look for every excuse under the sun on why they can’t do the same thing. That’s garbage and they know it. They have an agenda and they want you as the consumer, to choke on their crap.
@@LeonJohnson-yi3hg You are trying to compare a luscious apple to a rotten one. BG3 was very progressive yes, but it wasn't hamfisted with it, nor did it have bad writing, inconsequential choices, peachy lectures (that 'barve' scene...), inability to be antagonistic, etc like Veilguard.
@@Teo_liveBG3 wasn’t exactly perfect in that regard, there were some hamfisted “progressive” characters and few lines of preachy dialogueBut the biggest difference between the two games is that one delivers an excellent RPG experience with mostly good writing and characters and the other delivers a “modern” “role playing” experience.
@@LeonJohnson-yi3hg I was mainly talking about the game mechanics. Developers swore that turn based games were dead and nobody wanted to play them anymore and then BG3 came out and it was an instant success. The graphics were also extremely top notch for being a top down RPG and the dialogue options were extremely wide range allowing you to actually play however you wanted. I mean you could saw the head off of one of your companions or tear off another’s arm. These components have nothing to do with their precious ideology but for some reason they want to sacrifice all of that to put their politics front and center. People dislike the ideology and the politics, but if the game mechanics and the loop is fun, and it’s not a bugged out mess people will overlook it just like BG3.
DAO is great, has some great writing, some amazing side content. Lots of great alternate areas, fun combat and some of the best banter with ur party in any rpg. Was just a solid game topped with some memorable music. That intro music though...
This video warms my heart, thank you Dragon Age Origins was my favorite game ever growing up, and I used to think that it's largely due to nostalgia, but recently I've been recommending it to friends and they CAN'T GET ENOUGH. Sure, the visuals are outdated now, and there is a lot of running around, but the game is so brilliantly written, so engaging, filled with gore, brutality and humor. Playing BG3 I couldn't stop thinking: oh my god, this is everything Origins wanted to be, just in a different setting. And now, seeing the veilguard, it's really to properly let this world go
Hey Matty if you read this I really appreciate the work you do, without your amazing content, and hard work I wouldn’t have fallen in love with the Mass Effect trilogy and many RPGS. Thank you Matty🗿
I played Dragon Age Origins in 2012. It was the first turn base game I ever played. I was so overwhelmed by it at first but absolutely fell in love with it.
I'm with ya man, but I can't get behind Fallout 3 as "pretty well written with good choice". It's an all-timer iconic work (and I'm an old-school Fallout guy who praises 1/2, but I still loved 3), but in regards to player choice and consequence through player agency? It was extremely black-and-white (as all Bethesda games are since 2006).
I believe it was in IGN's reviews where it mentioned that past choices barely mattered, and previous characters only made brief cameos, and that has really bothered me. This rpg franchise is known for the choices you make and the consequences of those choices, especially in DA:O. However, the reviewer made it sound unimportant, and because Veilguard catered to non-binary people and all that nonsense, the game is amazing and gave it a 9/10, which makes my blood boil. Most of those reviewers have no idea what made the Dragon Age franchise great, and for that matter neither does Bioware. I just hope fans see the game for what it is.
over the years many of the writers and original creators left, so many of the new writers threw many of the different choices that can be made left in the bin
Origins holds such a special place in my heart. ❤ Absolutely beautiful, nostalgic and timeless. Played it for the first time when I was 11 years old, being scared of spiders that appear in the caves with a loud hiss lol. I am 25 now, and I STILL occasionally replay it. And it still invokes emotions and is still interesting. Characters are amazing, organic, the dialogues are well-written, you can shape your character however you want, from a hero to a complete menace. So many different quests and stories, the atmosphere is eerie and dark, intense. It’s a shame what the franchise came to. New game gives off major Disney vibes, imo, no hate.
Thank you for doing a review for actual RPG players! I've played almost all origins for DAO, because they are all so compelling, even if technically a lot of them don't "represent" me. I don't need superficial representation, I need to know if the game has an immersive dark fantasy story that made me fall in love with the original game.
You can imagine what someone who's been a fan of Dragon Age since playing Origins when it first released thinks of Veilguard. If you had played the series from the beginning I think you'd have been even harsher in your review and quite rightly so. It's not the same game at all anymore. Veilguard doesn't belong in the Dragon Age franchise.
I only ever dabbled in DAO because my younger self just couldn’t vibe with the combat, but I think now that I’m an old man (37) I should probably give it another go
I've very little experience with any of them as I've only seen my brother play them, I just remember in one of them, the main character goes "alright, alright" in a frustrated voice when attacking. I asked him why they did that and he said they're just reacting to the command of attack.
Larian made a better successor to DAO than BioWare did. Such a shame because DAO is phenomenal. I played DAI first, really enjoyed it, then I played DAO and, my gosh, I was blown away by the quality of writing and companions. What I wouldn’t give for another DA that could compete with BG3.
It's one of my all time favourite games and stories I go back to experience regularly. It showcases one of the best antagonists I've ever experienced without it being an obvious villain wringing their hands together comically. Seeing things like that in stark contrast to the recent game, is disheartening as both a reader and writer.
I remember this game. Not only as a player but i had a very very small part in doing a couple lines of voice over work. That said I couldn't find where in the game it was placed. I wasn't paid for the bit i did as it was work experience as an intern. To think my greatest achievement was doing a tiny bit of voicework for a game that i may or may not have ended up in xD Crazy how life works sometimes.
I never forgot. Hard to forget after playing Origins like 10-12 times to see every possible ending and combo, to forcing myself to play through DA 2 twice so I can at least do a male and female run and pick the mages/vs religious bigot route. The dumb chat wheel ruined the story
I played DA:O years ago but didn't enjoy it and left after an hour of playing cause I really didnt understand the gameplay, didn't even get to join the Grey Wardens. Decided to try the game yesterday and I've come to really like it. I'm currently at the mages tower after leaving Lothering and the mages are kicking my ass, Alistar not tanking as I expected. I understand the gameplay much better now however. Still getting the hang of character relations though.
I don’t think it’s that people sleep on him, it’s that he is a semi cowardly follower. The second he told me he prefers to follow you, a new initiate, rather then step into his role as a Senior, as a king, is just. Ugh. He’s a good guy and fighter, but he is weak willed.
@beniron5807 he's not cut out for that is his whole thing. That's his arch. He doesn't even want to be king. He's the unwanted son of an elf and a king. The limelight is something he always avoided. That's his whole arch in game. He's not a coward. He's spent his life as an unofficial royalty. No one liked him but the former king was respected enough that at least he got shipped off to Templars instead of being killed

Along with kotor, dao is the best that BioWare ever did
Exodus made by Archetype Entertainment is on its way to fill the hole left by Mass Effect.

I can't even imagine current Bioware letting Morrigan say "now we have a dog, and Alistair is still the stupidest one in the party". Let alone anything darker than that.
They would call it the orange misogynist instead
They would never.
“Errrrm, ya’ll, you’ll wanna see this!”
No. They're too squeamish about even blood to ever do anything dark and edgey now. It reminds of listening to vtmb2 devs talking about vtmb. If you want complex stories or gore, sex and dark themes, you have to go retro

I started up Origins again last night and tried out the city elf origin for the first time and I can say current Bioware wouldn’t have the balls to address the dark themes present in that origin. On top of that the writing, characters, tone and overall vibe of the game is perfect and a big part of why that game has stuck with me so long.
It feels like a Marvel movie, kind of.
If only Veilguard had tacky PSAs like the old G.I. Joe cartoons.
Just returned to Origins myself having not played it probably a decade. Absolutely having a blast, and it's been long enough that it almost feels like playing it over for the first time. It's funny that some people think it's exaggeration how much better these games used to be, but you only have to go back and play them to realise just how true it is.
@wheelysteve i fired it up about two weeks ago and I completely agree with you, what a great game.
I'm doing the same and have been keeping at least one older game in my cycle of played games. They really do hit different man. Having so much fun role playing with all the choices
Same here. After 10 years found new dialogs. Gotta love it
Dragon Age Origins and Final Fantasy 12 were the games that got me into RPGs, now I know Final Fantasy 12 is not everybody favorite but there was something that just clicked for me. People who talk about nostalgia goggles do not get that while graphics and mechanics may age and become obsolete, writing does not. That is where older games win by a huge margin.

The writing in Origins recently made me realise that no, it's not me, it's modern writing that's the problem.
I been knowing this for years now, yes modern writing is trash.
It's amazing how a voiceless OC has more personality than any other Dragon Age protagonist
You know a game is special when you'd rather go back and play the older game than play the one that just came out.

@@LeonJohnson-yi3hg I see you're the typical target audience for failguard: doesn't have the brain capacity to digest criticism
The da2 dlc where you face corypheus shows that with adequate time dragon age 2 could have been just as successful as origins

This is true, your companions are cooldowns in Veilguard just like Mass Effect, but in previous DA games you could switch to them in combat. I liked playing as Solas and Leliana for the mage and rogue gameplay. You can't do that now, it's simplified and dumbed down.
That shift came after the success of mass effect 2. And they tried to emulate it in da2 and that began t the downfall of dragon age in my opinion.

I complete Dragon Age: Origins and Awakening more than 10 times. Dragon Age 2 around 5-8 times. Dragon Age Inquisition more than 5 times. And Dragon Age Origins is still my favorite game in this series. I will definitely not play The Veilguard mainly because of three reasons:

There is nothing "special" in the fact that a game from 2009 is better than those of 2024. Never buy on the 1rst day. Always wait at least a month. Not only because you get a chace to check reviews or gameplays, but also patches (games now always release unfinished).
@San_Vito very true, i agree. Gaming just isn't what it was 20 or 25 years ago.
@@San_Vitoyeah I wait at least a week now at least. Games are just too expensive for me to take a chance on something I might not like
You can literally play s bit and refund..
Matty, you’re the number 1 trusted source for me now. Appreciate you
Until he likes a game that you don’t 😂
@ nah bro matty to this day hasnt let me down
@Pabs-y3z nah, even when we have different views i like that hes not a shill

Thank you for the honesty as usual. You always keep it real and we appreciate you
The truth is the current devs at Bioware are incapable of making Origins
They probably haven't even fucking played it
I wonder just how much of their ineptitude played a factor in not "importing" more world state stuff, as opposed to them merely not caring.
Origins felt like stepping into a new era of gaming. What an experience 🥲
More like 1%
@@fullstackweebdev yep, never seen a more deluded comment lol. People are enjoying it, it's not a perfect game but has enough positives that people are enjoying it for now.
"Vast majority" it has positive reviews everywhere my guy
We got your back Matty!!!
I'm replaying Origins tonight. I really need to play KOTOR. I keep hearing great things about it.
You're missing out
It is incredible, same with Kotor 2 but play it with the restored content mod.
I'm with you on Fallout 3. It gets some unnecessary hate.
one of the top 5 games of all time in my opinion, and I've been gaming 30+ years
mostly from NV fanboys though
@@thebigenchilada678 They also don't like Dragon Age 2... I honestly don't think Dragon Age fans like dragon age, those people just liked origins 🤷♂
Bg3 was “woke” too it just was more liked
More easy to make memes on, more popular
Man the music in dragon age origins just sounds like home, it instantly takes me back to my teens
This video warms my heart, thank you
Dragon Age Origins was my favorite game ever growing up, and I used to think that it's largely due to nostalgia, but recently I've been recommending it to friends and they CAN'T GET ENOUGH.
Dragon Age Origins is one of my fav games OF ALL TIME. It's a literal masterpiece. Veilguard is an insult to even be mentioned in the same franchise.
I did the same thing! Put origins on and put mods on it for the first time so I could have my dog with me at all times
I absolutely loved Origins and still haven't play Awakening haha
This shows how that companies work quality will change when the best talent moves on from working there
Origins holds such a special place in my heart.
I kind of hated the dwarves. They are a terrible culture
Please thank EditorPlays for saving thousands of players around the world from wasting money on The Veilguard.
I played dao back when I friend rented it on 360. I couldn't put it down and I'm a bit younger than you
Larian made a better successor to DAO than BioWare did.
Dragon Age Origins was so freaking good.
Anyone else remember the letdown that Dragon Age 2 was after Dragon Age origins and awakening
BG3’s recent success shows there is more demand for this style! And a lack of hand holding
every character in origins is fantastic, save maybe sven. he's the only one that doesn't get a ton of time. Allister is criminally slept on.
These games were made by two totally different companies. Just like Blizzard, BioWare is masquerading in the corpse of their former company.
I so far am enjoying Veilguard. I also love each and every other D age game, for diff reasons. But....big but....im also drunk. So theres that. Love you Matty.
Awakening was incredible! Origin of Anders! Dragon Age Origins did so much, so well.
In the two decades of gaming, maybe slightly more, it lives fondly in my memory.
I started replaying origins after watching many veilguard reviews.
