    I haven't watched you guys in years. I saw you before you even had a show and it was before you were married. I came across this randomly. You guys are great!! I looked at the clock and realized that I've been watching your shows for over 4 hours. You guys are so honest and truthful and funny. It warms my heart as an older gay man to be able to see content like this.

    As a casual follower you folks are super. It's that comfortable repartee of two individuals on the same frequency. What makes it really work for me is your no bullshit presentation - you call it like you see it and that is good enough for me. Please keep that easy going dialogue going & I will be there to enjoy it. If you ever pass through the Balto - DC Area - I'll buy the first round! All the best to you!

    I rarely comment but now I have to - as a Finn there is a threshold lol I love your podcast - you have such interesting topics and talk about them in detail or in some cases even talk about a bit about yourselves which is nice - gay couples need representation. I just want to say I'm a huge fan from Finland🇫🇮

    I do appreciate when audiences see historical inaccuracies, but Hollywood's main concern is making hit movies. If I ever wondered whether an actor in an historical romance (for instance,Cate Blanchett in 'Elizabeth') had a problem with how her character behaved in a particular scene, I remember that in an interview she said that she showed the director a passage from a biography of Elizabeth I, and the director grabbed the book and threw it across the room, yelling, "That's not MY Elizabeth!" I tend to think of movies which claim to depict events accurately as opening a door onto a new topic, one that the viewer can research for themselves 😁😉

      They don't care about the money. They care about the woke agenda in spite of losing money because we live in a Gynocentric social order. Western society caters to Women over Men and apparently LGBTQ over both.

    History is always skewed by the person reading/watching. You see it through your own personal and cultural bias. Even reading material by say someone living during the Civil War you interpret based on your values. Far more important is the quality of the story and the message it gives. Movies are entertainment, if you enjoyed it and/or provoked, great!!

    To be fair about “Anastasia,“ it’s based on a legend that most people know is not the truth to begin with. It was originally a play written in 1952 and then a Hollywood movie made a couple of years later, all of that well before the animated film. it’s basically a sort of alternate history.

    It’s just so surreal how this person has died and now they are showing her off (her casket, we don’t know if the actual body is inside) to millions of people who everyone and their mother is judging and scrutinizing her legacy and legitimacy of the monarchy while others look at the funeral as some kind of fashion show over who wore what and the latest funeral trends. It’s all just gross.

    Movies are for entertainment, being a history buff, it sometimes bothers me about changes that were made. There was a movie where Mary Queen of Scots & Elizabeth I met twice & in reality they never met. In Pocahontas, she was the good guy of the movie. Pocahontas did eventually go to England, married an English man & died in England. Her name was changed to Rebecca when she converted to Christianity

    • @doctorj6030
      @doctorj6030 2 роки тому +1

      Also Queen Elizabeth II was the longest reigning British Monarch at 70 years. The only Queen since I have been alive & I am closing in on 70. Also Dahomey was eventually made a colony of France and now is known as the Country of Benin
      Africa has a rich history with many ancient civilizations, not only Egypt, but Ethiopia with its ancient Coptic Christian Churches.
      I love the movies, all movies & plan on seeing WomanKing.
      Alastair seems to do his homework on a lot of what u talk about, with the exception of moon landings.

    Thanks for doing this show! I wish there had been something similar when I was growing up in ELP (70's). Historically accurate: I gave up on that a long time ago. I choose to accept that a movie is just an AU, and it's up to me to go find facts if I'm interested. Burial, I don't care; I just ask that the finale to 'Swan Lake' be played. The ballet is rather symbolic (not completely, but rather) of how GLBT+ people have been treated over the centuries.

    Zach, it’s incredibly painful when you cut off your hubby from talking. He was explaining 3 things about the movie 300 and you cut him off on two very loudly and I would say disrespectfully. You do this so much that it seriously pains me. I feel like what do you need him for if you “insist” on doing all the talking. Let him finish his thoughts and sentences. We like hearing his views as well, especially since he reads so many books and talks seemlessly about the stories. That’s why I like listening to his point of view, especially with movies. The biggest inaccuracy of the movie was the women being great fighters, when the French came in to shut down their slave trade, the battle between the female warriors and the French legion lasted minutes, with only six French soldiers being killed compared to hundreds of the female warriors.
    Also, for the record, the female warriors were given female slaves to "service" them sexually, but portraying that in the movie would have probably been even more problematic than the glossed over (and despite what you guys said, this fact is glossed over in the movie in favor of showing the white man as the ultimate villain) fact they were fighting to preserve a long history of brutal slave trade and the only thing that could have made that look worse, would have been to show the female warriors sexually abusing the teen girls they were given.
    You can't fault people or just blatantly dismiss or imply that people are just being racist for not liking the movie, when the real problem was the makers of the movie chose to push this as a "based on real events" moment in history, and then portrayed monsters as "brave female warriors" fighting against white male oppression and the patriarchy, and that is what this movie does.

    • @marvinrichards8633
      @marvinrichards8633 2 роки тому +1

      It is okay if you didn't like the movie and have opinions about the portrayal. But is is NOT okay to lie about the history to further your opinion. "Lasted minutes?" "Not great fighters?" NO: "Over the course of SEVEN WEEKS in fall 1892, Dahomey’s army fought valiantly to repel the French. The Agojie participated in 23 separate engagements during that short time span, earning the enemy’s respect for their valor and dedication to the cause. As one marine noted, “[N]either the cannons, nor the canister shot, nor the salvo fire stops them. … It is really strange to see women so well led, so well disciplined.”
      Also, the French did not come to purely "end their slave trade." The two Franco-Dahomean Wars were over territories the French wanted under its Colonial rule, the Dahomey claimed the territories (Porto-Novo and Cotonou) as parts of its Kingdom.
      Like the podsters, I encourage everyone to do their own research and read multiple sources. I will include a link here to the Smithsonian Magazine piece that gives a detailed but brief history of the Agojie. It is also the source from where the quoted blurb comes from. Happy movie watching and happy reading: www.smithsonianmag.com/history/real-warriors-woman-king-dahomey-agojie-amazons-180980750/

    • @Ulf831
      @Ulf831 2 роки тому

      @@marvinrichards8633 I stated the French sent in a legion to fight the Dahomey and they did and that legion DID defeat them within under an hour, killing hundreds of the Dahomey while French forces lost only six men in the battle, that isn't denied in any of the historical records you cited.
      I said nothing about how many encounters local French authorities had with them that spurred the French Government to finally take the matter seriously.
      Against seasoned, troops they didn't stand a chance.
      Furthermore, none of this detracts from the deplorableness of their slave trade and ownership.
      They weren't fierce powerful warriors defending a righteous cause (against the patriarchy), they were slavers, who terrorized other tribes and raided them and sold their victims into slavery for their own profit.
      Even Viola Davis can't act her way out of that.
      From The Journal of African History:
      European observers noted that they handled themselves "admirably" in hand-to-hand combat with the French, even if they were decisively crushed in the one major battle they participated in, Cotonou, during the First Franco-Dahomean War (1890). In the Second Franco-Dahomean War (1892), special Agojie units targeted French officers, managing only six kills of French Legionnaires. The Agojie participated in several battles but proved to be little match for the superior might, weaponry and longer bayonets used by the French soldiers. In this one battle, 417 Agojie were killed in less than an hour, with nearly all falling at the tips of French bayonets.
      This battle ended the Agojie as a significant presence in Dahomey forces.
      It is also accurate to note, the Agojie fought as a unit but did so along side Dahomey male warriors as well.
      Though the women were considered to be exceptionally brutal, often beheading those they fought , as well as random slaves they took while also cutting off their genitals to present to their MALE king as trophies.
      But I guess that didn't quite fit the narrative the two white women who wrote this story had in mind.
