I love how everyone refers to his playing style as "If the cymbal ain't swinging, hit it", yet it's NEVER too much! He plays exactly what fits the mood of the song!
It's called the Matt Halpern game.
I think his choice of big, darker, and lower pitched cymbals makes a huge difference with that. Imagine if he was Zildgian A-series cymbals or the like, it would be barely listenable.
In my opinion the cymbals are a little bit over the top
Man I love Matt's playing. Not only is he expressive himself, but I swear even his cymbals alone tell a story. Dude's so fun to watch and groove to. Glad Sweetwater is giving us some Halpern goodies lately!
Not only that but his ghosts on the snare are INCREDIBLE!!!! Dude is one of my top 3!
Matt might be the most "expressionist" drummer out there. I've never seen someone play with this much heart/emotion, except maybe Marco Minnemann. These guys make me want to return to playing drums so badly!
To let you know, ever since I read your comment "even his cymbals alone tell a story", I constantly think of it. Like almost everytime I listen to Periphery which is all the time.
@@taylork1746 Haha that’s awesome! When I heard him play for the first time, I though “Holy cow this dude loves cymbals!” but the more you listen, the better it gets. It’s like the cymbals and drums each have their own storylines in the same movie!
Even with the crazy cymbal action it's he's still just playing what the song needs. Never anything over the top.

Matt Halpern is always having a lot of fun playing drums, you see it in his face, the way his arms goes floating around the kit, you definitely get that vibe and makes you wanna go to your kit and make some magic just like matt always does. What a great drummer to watch and learn from.

I've only gotten into Periphery recently, but I love what Matt brings to the group. His style is so big, loose, and bombastic and he really provides a great foundation for the rest of the band. Maybe not the most technical drummer, but he is dripping with style and feel!
Also- what a killer track. Great job Matt!
Halpern is pretty damn technical if you ask me. I've never seen another drummer play with such appropriate chops, Make Total Destroy is a perfect example of this.

As a kid I had a ton of inspiration and influence from Rush and Neil Peart. Now that it’s over I always wondered if a band as worthy would ever rise again. Then I found Periphery.

It’s weird he’s playing stuff from their old album p3. The video before this was marigold which is also off p3 but they came out with p4 for awhile now. Usually drummers will mostly play stuff from their latest stuff to promote that album. But killer performance as always and the mix sounds phenomenal ! That left foot chic throughout the whole song is such a nice touch and sounds so sick and something that sets him apart from other drummers in this genre and other styles of metal.
