This is so helpful! I would also add to put your phone on airplane mode so if you get any texts/calls, it won’t show up and distract from the lesson or ruin it! Thanks so much for this!
Thanks for this tip about airplane mode! I was using my phone as a doc cam a couple of weeks ago and got a couple of texts on my phone. It was very distracting! I also have that problem because my messages/call also pop on my MacBook and will minimize my zoom screen if I get a call or text! Anys tips for this issue you have would be helpful!!
I love how excited you are about this discovery! As teachers, we need to relish in these successful moments!! You should be proud. Bravo! Thank you for sharing!!
Glad I could make your laugh... I make myself laugh when I see it now! I had been working SO long to get that to work... my enthusiasm just bubbled up and out. Lol. Take care.
This was the least techy of all the ones I've watched and the easiest to understand. I love the bean cans. That cracked me up! I'm going to try it now.
Bless you, Gwen! This is a game changer for giving feedback on my students' screenplays! (And I think I'll use it as a document camera during workshops!!!) Cheers!
Thank you so much! This is what I have been looking for. Ugh, I'm so over this distance teaching/learning. I'm so thankful for everyone willing to share. Btw, you are adorable!
You are so much fun!!! I want you to teach me everything!! I love your voice, your energy and your cute little face. I mean that in the best way possible.
This is so helpful! We are back in person now and you can also set this up with a document camera! You can video yourself doing a lesson with the doc cam and your face, perfect for days when you need a sub and don't know who it is going to be! Thank you!
THIS is what I need! Your video literally saved me at 2 am when I was at my wits end trying to figure this out with 5 days to spare. Thank you so so so much!!!🥰🥰
I have spent hours playing around with zoom and screencast-o-matic and it didn't work the way I had seen in YOUR videos. When I saw your face in this "How Yo" Video I knew it would be helpful> Thank you soooo much.
OMG thank you!! I just found out yesterday evening that I have to be quarantined and teach kindergarten from home for the next 14 days after meeting with a parent this week who became sick and tested positive for COVID. I was racking my brain around how to do this effectively and this is a HUGE help!! You have no idea. Thank you so much!!
I love you! You save my day. I was wondering how do you share two screens at the same time to make a mini-presentations, and guess what? You showed it now. Thanks and super thanks to you.
This is perfect! I cannot wait to try it. It makes me laugh to see someone else’s excitement over a new or challenging discovery. I love your excitement. It looks as if you almost couldn’t contain yourself. Thank you for sharing. My HoverCam broke over a week ago, and it has been rough beyond measure.
Hie Gwen, we in Italy are in strict lockdown since weeks and we had to reinvent our teaching methods. I'm really thankful to you for your tutorials (somehow "technical", like this one, and even more for the writing ones). Thanks for your generosity in sharing.
Hi Anna, I am so glad that they are helpful to you-- this is such a stressful time for everyone all over the world, and teaching is definitely more complicated now than when it was when we were in our schools. I love that we can all come together and support one another. I hope you and your colleagues are healthy and safe in your homes in Italy. Take good care.
Thank-you sooooooooo much! I have been struggling for days using my iPad reverse mode camera as a document camera but in this highly stressful situation my hands would shake and then I would drop it. Now I just need to find a way to have this work with WeChat.
I follow you on Instagram and had to come see your hack. Thank you for making this. I just learned about using QuickTime to record a lesson and this is just what I needed to know to do art journaling lessons with my students. I kept giggling every time you got all excited about figuring this all out 😁 you are too cute! Thanks for sharing! I’ll pass this along to my school district.
Thanks, Clara! I had been working SOOO long to figure out how to make it work-- I was clearly giddy with excitement. I think we all need to look for joy in the little things right now. :) Super happy it was helpful to you! Take care & be well!
We need to definitely connect because this is extremely helpful I have been trying to figure out how to get this set up I had the idea in my head I know how I wanted it to work out but it took me like two hours trying to play with the USB ports and the cameras and figuring out how I'm going to make sure everybody can see all the things and I want him to see yeah I'm going to connect with you if it is at all possible
I'm so sorry to ask a silly question. I'm trying to download the Photo Booth app. So I can follow along. Would you mind sharing? And I promise I've tried to answer this question through my own fruitless attempts. Your passion for teaching is contagious ... GRateful.
Thanks for your kind words. Do you have a Mac? If so, it's something that is generally installed on your computer. If you have a PC, I think you will need to find another way to get your image on to your screen. I don't have a PC so I'm unable to troubleshoot this. You might try just using Google Meet with just yourself... I think that would work, too! Good luck and hang in there! :)
I know-- I'd be embarrassed if I STILL weren't so excited to have figured that out... lol. It took me HOURS and I was clearly so delighted. I'm glad it brightened your day & hope it worked for you! :) :) :)
Thanks. We are on Teams but we are having a few issues. I appreciate all your hard work as I am always looking for a 'work around'...Best wishes for your new year in 2020. (I year we all said, WHAT?)
I use my phone's rear camera to record videos, sometimes OBS (it's free). Then I use Hit Film Express to edit (I donated $9). If you're good at taking videos and can do it in one shot, or pause and reset along the way, you don't need any editing software. You can also trim the ends and trim out middle sections using the UA-cam editor. I just use Hit Film because I want to be able to splice together several video files, or use an image file (jpg) as my intro in the video. Just start by taking 1 long video, pausing in between segments if your phone can do that to save some editing time, and use the UA-cam editor to trim / cut out - you'll get a lot done that way.
Hi Gwen, Amazed to see your exitement. I came across an app on Google play store called Tcamera which makes it easy to use your mobile's camera on your laptop.
Can viewers interact with you? I am an art teacher and have never done a video before and I’m trying to figure out how to do this on a budget. I loved your tip and appreciate your time and a energy-figuring all this out.
Hi Candace, Do you mean can you do this on a live platform? I do know that there are ways to split your screen so kids can see you and your doc camera... however, I haven't tried that as all of my lessons are recorded since teachers in my district access my lessons across a range of grade levels. Sorry I can't be more help with live lessons-- good luck and take care.
Hi Debbie, This particular hack only works on a Mac with Quicktime. If you find a Windows work around, be sure to make a video and share... there are lots of teachers that would LOVE to see that hack. I don't have a PC so it's not something I can try on my own. Good luck & take care! :)
Hi Terrica, I so wish I had a PC so I could try this out for all the people that have asked. However, I only have a Macbook and an iPhone so I'm not sure at all. I'd recommend doing a search for a doc camera hack with Windows to find a hack specifically for your devices. Good luck! :)
This is so helpful! I would also add to put your phone on airplane mode so if you get any texts/calls, it won’t show up and distract from the lesson or ruin it! Thanks so much for this!
Totally!

Glad I could make your laugh... I make myself laugh when I see it now! I had been working SO long to get that to work... my enthusiasm just bubbled up and out. Lol. Take care.
I know!!! But it is AMAZING!!!
Wow go girl go! My favorite part is the ability to drag corner to corner only selecting the part of the screen you want to record! Brilliance!
Discovering this video as I warily approach another year of teaching in these unprecedented times. Know that you are an inspiration! Thank you!
This is super awesome! I was as excited as you were!. Thank you so much for sharing this!
