      And it's also really interesting to see more psychological issues and disorders and how to tackle them, instead of behavioral issues, that are usually caused by the owners themselves

      The road to hell is paved with good intentions. Unfortunately, this video is a case of the blind leading the blind. A good balanced trainer would make both this dog and family much happier instead of this insane positive only training approach. Common sense no longer exists. The next time this dog is outside and there are fireworks, this dog will be out of its mind. Positive only training does NOT work. Use positive training for obedience. But, it doesn't provide a mechanism for permanently and quickly correcting unwanted behavior. Again, common sense.
      After you've bought into carefully edited positive only TV and you get frustrated with positive only training that does NOT work, seek out a really good balanced trainer... and get ready for amazing and quick results.

      @@samwdavis please explain what balance training method you would utilize to help this dogs anxiety? I’m rolling my brain trying to understand what technique would be used that wouldn’t be positive reinforcement in this situation.
      This dog is having an extremely strong emotional response, negative reinforcement nor any form of punishment would help this dog change his feelings. Which is the issue, this dogs emotions become so overwhelming he starts trying to cope by bee lining to a dark, safe, place.
      Any type of forceful correction isn’t going to make him feel differently about the stressor, it’s just going to make him less likely to exhibit the behavior in front of the owner. The dogs behavior isn’t fixed in that situation it’s just suppressed at the benefit of the owner not having to feel like the dogs actions are a nuisance.
      So what’s the solution when the dog is alone, and correctors can not be utilized? How does correction address his emotional response. Positive reinforcement, enrichment, working on building higher threshold all do.

    I love that Victoria brought up that she can work on the dog's behavior, but that they should also see a vet and possibly get him medicated to help with anxiety. Not a lot of people know that dog's can take anti-depressants and anti-anxiety meds just like humans and it can really help. Behavior training can only do so much. Meds can help a dog go from -10 mood up to 0, and training can then bring them further up

    • @alicja1081
      @alicja1081 2 роки тому +5

      I disagree, meds don't fix the problem. They can be used for a while maybe when training is given, but in the long run, no no no. Just like for people and we don't have enough research. I would start with getting dog to a vet, doing extended blood, urine and feces tests and thorough examination, take care of a healthy diet, proper exercises, relax and fun time, getting good quality sleep + training. Adding some supplements maybe, trying CBD. And if all these won't help, meds as a last resort.

    I adopted a rescue dog who was severely abused and is a terrified mess, a lot like George. Medication has been absolutely game changer, and learning how to read his needs, and teaching him how to act those emotions out. I don’t mind if he goes and hides, but that hiding needs to be in a safe place; like a crate or his bed, or even by me. But definitely not in cupboards and closets. Stuff like that. Giving him enrichment to try and distract him is really helpful too. But medicine is the #1 thing that helped my boy. Once that medicine routine is working, that allows us to train him to react in a safer or better way, and hopefully someday medicine won’t be needed anymore but if he’s happy and healthy taking it forever then I’m okay with that! These owners definitely need some baby proofing on the cupboards!

    This is literally just like my dog. He’s 8 and he’s afraid of loud and sudden noises.. Even things you wouldn’t expect. A penny dropping, a paper cup dropping, the things you wouldn’t imagine.. then he’ll hide. He hides at the back under my bunk bed at times. It’s unfortunate to see other dogs experiencing the same things as mine. I’m glad that George was able to get some help. My family and I just got used to our dog’s fear and try our best to comfort him.

      I don't think people realize how important it is to train your dog to be confident when they're alone. You won't always be there so it's imperative they have appropriate coping mechanisms such as a crate bed and chew/puzzle toys. You should really do more than just comforting your dog...build his confidence through play and desensitization to sounds.

    • @shakeykirkir
      @shakeykirkir 2 роки тому +8

      @m6666 2 роки тому +9

      @@shakeykirkir I'd also take him to the vet. He may need medication to help him get through it. Being an older dog, training may only get him so far, but it's also a good idea to get help from your vet who knows your dog. Desensitisation may? be too overwhelming and there are things the vet can help you with. If you can't afford the vet straight away, try the desensitisation and see how he goes, and take it from there. Good luck.

      I'm so sorry for you and your dog. And having such a neighbour...no comment. Consult with behavorist, please - meds are never the answer. Your dog had a terrible trauma and she needs to cope with it. Meds will only mask the problem + can give awful side effects. There are also many supplements on the market that can calm the dog - do some research, try CBD maybe. I wish you and your family all the best! God bless you.

    Many (if not most) dogs hate loud noise ex. fireworks and thunderstorms. George needs a crate with a cover, which will help him feel secured when his hoomans are out. Training of course is needed to desensitize him. But his anxiety is very common and normal.

    • @Jen.K
      @Jen.K 2 роки тому +13

      Yes, I thought a crate was needed, right from the start of the video. My pug is very sensitive and her crate is her safe zone, it seems to be the only place she is able to completely relax when she is by herself, it has a cover with a front flap. She has inside toys and outside toys, which are kept in storage cubes. She expends energy by taking them out and distributing them all over the house and garden. My French Bulldog on the other hand is much more laid back, he was never anxious or stressed about loud noises, event during storms, he just doesn't care. On his first walk, as a puppy, a motor bike startled him, but it was only a couple of seconds, and then he was relaxed again. Sensitivity and anxiety is on a sliding scale with all dogs, I'm guessing its a mammal kind of thing.

    • @koalachick8029

      There’s this perception around non-dog/first-time dog owners that crates are use for punishing a dog and are for “bad” pet owners. It’s nice for me, someone who wants a dog, to understand that a crate can be a dog’s “safe zone” for when I’m not around.

    I had a cocker spaniel that would go and grab her toy duck whenever there was a thunderstorm. She would come hunting with me all the time when I’d go out for birds of all kinds I just figured she had thought she wanted to practise. Like the thunder was like a gunshot in her mind, so we was like oh gotta go get the bird. It was kinda adorable.

      Get him a thunder shirt. I used one on my pup as he too was scared of thunderstorms, I also put a dryer sheet between him and the shirt to help with the static. He's two now and he no longer needs his thunder shirt as he was lucky to have started wearing it while young and is no longer scared of the thunder. They work wonders, especially if you use the dryer sheet at the same time. A lot of dogs are scared of the noise, but a lot of dogs are actually afraid of the static caused by the lightning. Good luck.

    I'm two minutes in and the solution is a cozy crate, right, and some childproof locks? Is that not obvious? I'm sure this will turn out well as Victoria is AMAZING!

    My dogs would get frantic if there are fireworks or thunderstorms. My beagle would actually climb on you. I found that closing the windows and curtains and playing Baroque music whilst just petting them. They would calm down and we would all fall asleep.

    My neighbors dog was the same she hated fireworks and thunderstorms she even ripped and chewed a hole in the wooden garage door once while I was doggy sitting her. Eventually she had to be on Trazadone given before if possible fireworks displays were set off or we would give it at the before a thunderstorm or at the beginning of one.

    I have a German Shepard that was abused for 5 years and made to have multiplejtters of puppies, and the owners wanted to put her down, so we took her, and it was a LONG process with the other dogs.
    She's on medication 2 times a day and while we still have a way to go, it's made so many worlds' of difference.
    She was aggressive, but it was only bc she was in a constant state of panic.
    Now she plays with the other dogs!
    I am disabled and live with my dad at 23yo, and am home most of the time, so I'm lucky to be able to give more time.

    I feel so sorry for this poor sweet Dog, George. I can totally relate to being so scared of loud noises. I hate fire alarms, due to a lot of fire drills at school, as well as one of my brothers doing a dangerous stunt with our family barbecue due to curiosity of what fire fighters do. His dangerous way of curiosity has scarred me for life. My care agency is required to perform safety inspections every month, and it involves fire alarm testing, plus fire drills, and I always have to go out on my deck when the fire alarms are being tested. I am terrified when fire alarms, safety checks, and fire drills are even mentioned. So it's a trigger for me. So, I can totally relate to how george feels. I wonder if he had terrifying experiences with loud sounds prior to being adopted by his current owners. He is scared of the word fireworks, which is causing him to think that one is going off outside, or his owners may be planning to set one off in the mere future. I'm the exact same way, except with fire alarms. That word scares me. I don't blame the poor puppy for coping in his own way. I hide out on my balcony every safety check day when my caregivers need to test the fire alarms. Or, if someone is cooking and they make a noise that might indicate the alarms to go off due to food that's burning, it indicates that our fire alarms will go off. I cover my ears if they ever do go off. At least George is able to hide for safety. If I were him, I'd hide, too. If the word Fireworks is said, he hides in order to brace himself. He is a smart dog for creating his own coping mechanisms. I just feel sad that he's been living scared his whole life. Victoria has excellent ideas on how to help poor George cope. It makes me sad to hear that animals are suffering from that. It breaks my heart!

    I used to have a Siberia Husky who was scared of thunder. She would go and hide in the closet downstairs.
    I also dog sit a toy poodle and he goes to the bathroom and hops in the bathtub when there is a storm.

    This is pretty informative. One of my dogs has a similar problem, when she is scared she hides behind furniture and gets tangled on cables, sometimes she goes up and down the stairs and is worrisome cause she's old and does no have much strength so I fear she might fall or hurt herself. I'm going to try all this stuff.
