Never went to school. Never did a apprenticeship. Just over 10 years all on job training from 4 different employers over that time. My current job won't bump me up a level in pay util I get my red seal. Currently being assessed by the ministry to challenge the exam, I will be using this video to help me study for sure. Thank

Generally, the percentage of success, particularly on the written red seal machinist exam is extremely low.

Out of curiosity, what was the pass rate for your class?
My class requires a 70%
There are many other colleges in Ontario that require between 70 and all the way down to 55 to pass, which is kind of weird because the red seal is a 70
Our level three class also has a course called exam prep that runs 30 weeks
Did your college offer that course to you?
@@shopandmath Unfortunately, I don't know how close is the course to ministry requirements. In my opinion, the curriculum in my school needs to be adjusted to red seal standards. As an example, we had the communication class 😄, there's no questions about communication in the test!!! The pass mark in Saskatchewan Polytechnic is 60, but I should mention, that I was always in high 80, to 90. They don't offer any refresher course as far as I know....
Apprenticeship is not only schooling it is also training at work and experience of a student. But when only a couple people out of 16 are successful we can form an opinion about schooling.
You're a good man for putting this up and I'll pass this along to anyone I know who is interested in writing the tests. I wrote my level 3 exemption test in November and got 73% on it, then I wrote my Red Seal in January and got 84% on it. I wish I would have found this earlier, I probably could have bumped those up a bit

None of this is on current machinist red seal test. I just write my exam and this helped me with absolutely nothing at all. Study your break down from your current red seal and it might help. It's a very challenging test, everyone in my class barely passed. It's experience based. There is no easy question It's all possess and procedures. Good luck guys lol

For those using this reference,please be mindful that in a Ontario C of Q exam there are NO "none" of the above questions.There are only ever 4 possible answers with 2 answers being completely wrong and 2 being similar,with 1 correct.When considering the answer,and are still unsure,READ the question again,and again..and again if not sure...WHAT are they asking for? That will help.When you look at it in that sense it really is a 50-50 question,and may help ease anxiety.Although this may be a good reference in a general sense,it is not a good reference for a true C of Q exam

Agreed that doesn't make sense for cutting shafts. You would use the auto feed

Not every question is relevant to today’s read seal exam, but they are still valid in the form of education .
It will be difficult to explain, in a very short manner
If someone diligently goes through all of these questions and picks out a dozen or two dozen that I don’t understand, then they go back and question someone who has experience I can guide them and provide the correct explanation. That is where the value of this video comes into play, it is not meant to be teaching towards a test. It is meant to pick out areas that you may be week in and can get better resources.

As expected. Full of questions that have only a nodding acquaintance with the real work in the machine shop. How many shops have a universal milling machine now? Or lantern tool post? In over 50 years as a machinist I have never heard of the term "chip trap". Even google has no idea what it is!🤣 No wonder we are becoming a technological back water.

The feed reverse leaver is located on the head stock
You might have confused it with the RPM(spindle CW-OFF-CC) or feed engagement

we do not teach rigging in general machinist class
there are a couple of videos related to bench work posted
how to be prepared (1) do all the required reading (2) look up what you going are going to be tested on (3) have all of the required documents your book signed off and the letter from your employer

About question #235, I'm wondering about Bore Gauge set up With "MASTER GAUGE ", are you sure about it? What is Master Gauge, bore Gauges use to set with Gauge blocks and outside Micrometer 🤔
its the master that comes withe the gauge when you buy it
in most cases its a block or cylinder with a ground hole inside of it

198 should be 3/4-10 UNC-2A since UN is a special series with slightly different tolerances and 3/4-10 is not among them - UN constant pitches (4, 6, 8, 12, 16, 20, 28, and 32 threads per inch) get UN designation.
Its a nut, so it is 2B...
@@nebojsailkic3356 Yeah your right but it IS UNC and CAN'T be UN but there is no choice for 2B. UN uses different rules for tolerancing so by elimination that is all that is left that you can at least get the proper tolerances with. It's a mistake on the test with no completely correct answer. I'd be pissed to get this on an actual test.
so then should be 3/4-10UNC -2B, since it is a nut(Internal thread)
