    Welcome to Show Me Cables. Today we’ll be taking a look at the commonly used and often confusing DIN connectors.
    DIN connectors are frequently used in a variety of low voltage applications, ranging from audio and video to power, serial and data.
    We offer the connectors in both plastic and metal housings. Male and Female orientations. Mini DIN. And Panel mount.
    DIN connectors come in a variety of pin arrangements including: 3 pin, 4 pin, 5 pin, 6 pin, 7 pin, 8 pin and 13 pin.
    What can be confusing with DIN connectors is that the 5 pin and 8 pin connectors have slightly different configurations.
    Let’s take a closer look at the different styles. The 5 pin connector comes in a 270, 240, and 180 degree orientation. The 270 degree style looks like the number 5 you might see on a pair of dice. The 240 degree is formed in a U-shape. And the 180 degree is a small, half-circle.
    Now for the 8 pin. There is a 270 and 262 degree orientation. These two can be hard to identify because they look very similar. The 270 degree is angled inward, almost making a complete circle. Where the 262 degree forms more of a U-shape and does not curve inward quite as much.
    There are also mini versions of the connectors ranging from 3 pin to 8 pin.. These are a smaller form factor compared to the standard DIN connectors.
    The two most common arrangements of mini DIN are the 6 pin and 4 pin. The 6 pin mini is used for PS/2 connectors, typically found on many older keyboards and mice. The 4 pin is used for S-video connections found on various home theater equipment.
    Hopefully this has cleared up any confusion on the different DIN connector types. If you’re still having trouble or just have any questions not covered here, feel free to call our customer service department at 888-519-9505.

    I find 4-pin mini-DIN is used on a lot of devices that need multiple voltages, like old hard drive and CD-ROM enclosures. I've even seen it used for power on weird stuff like a development/backup unit for Nintendo 64 (Bung Doctor V64).

    Quick question, is it possible to build a 3.5mm male to 4 pin male mini DIN? I have an old German console radio that I'd like to add Bluetooth to via an external transmitter/receiver and the radio's tape/record player in jack. I figured it is, and I have limited soldering skillz, just not sure how to go about it, or what parts to order. Thanks!!

    Hello! I work in an industrial environment and I run across connectors similar to these, but i’m not sure if they referred to as DIN connectors, or even follow that standard. Usually when I look them up online they’re referred to as 3-pin-5pin M12 connectors. We use these to connect sensors like photo-eyes and proximity sensors. I’m just trying to find out an official name for this connector because a lot of different places have a different name for it. When I look up DIN connector or even mini DIN I get everything you’ve shown in the video except the connectors I work with. Any information would be much appreciated. :) Thank you.

    hi there,looking for some advice. I recently picked up a yamaha surround sound system that is a few years old. its in mint condition,only problem is it requires an 8pin DIN connection from the sub/amp to the centre speaker. could i replace this cable with a standard 8 pin cable or would i have to get a specific build? i can get a replacement for around £10, but they do get quite expensive. is this an option?

      I'm not sure if they employ a special pinout. I doubt they did, but I'm not certain. You could try a standard straight through 8 pin cable. www.showmecables.com/by-category/cables/cables-computer/cables-computer-din/8-pin-mini-din-male-male-cable

    I have the RadioShack Gold Series 3/32-Inch Stereo Plug, and have absolutely no idea how to wire it up. It has the weirdest looking connector for the + wire. There's plastic piece that doesn't pull, twist anything, and has 2 tiny clips (?) that form an offset looking channel, but after about 45 mins., I'm clueless as to how the + wire installs. I thought about running it down the channel and then soldering the wire below that, but there's little room below it to solder, and I'm concerned the plastic will melt and deform. I looked at the inside of the plastic boot, but didn't see any special obstructions that might place pressure against it and hold it in place. On top of all that, there's no information on the web about how to do this, not even RadioShack itself! Anyone know how in the world how to assemble this correctly, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks...

We may be able to work up a custom solution for you if you are able to find out the wiring information. Hey guys, thanks for the video, i wanna know if have some difference between a 3 pin DIN connector and a xlr connector, but not a difference in question of pin angles or fit with the plug. Have some difference in the question of signal quality? Is XLR better for eliminating noise or is just a marketing play?

      @@ShowMeCables Hi, i'm creating a homemade electrode for a low cost EEG , i have a shielded 2 lines cable, and a 5-pin DIN connector. I dont have experience with this area so i gone search in web for connectors and cables. I need a line with plus signal and the other with negative signal. The shielded is gonna be the ground. Some sites saids that xlr connector is better for eliminate noises, i just wanna know if for these aplication, is gonna really be better, i dont want spend money. In my country the xlr connector is expensive. Thank you for answer.

    • @ShowMeCables
      @ShowMeCables  5 років тому +1

      Good luck. Let us know how it turns out.
      I wonder if the recommendations are based on audio noise. Since XLR can support a balanced signal it is better for audio applications than an unbalanced signal. However, that doesn't have to do with the form factor of the connector. You can achieve similar results with a 1/4 TRS connector.

    Is it possible to make a 7 pin into a 6 pin?

    • @emmettturner9452
      @emmettturner9452 3 роки тому +1

      With some, yes. I've ejected the middle pin from several DINs, most recently when converting a DIN6 to a 240° DIN5. Ejected pins doen't always go back in securely and sometimes risks being pushed into the hood when inserted, so be sure you want to eject them and don't just do it for soldering convenience or pin rearrangement unless you also fill the plug with glue or something afterwards.

      Looking for Sega Saturn compatible 9P mini-DIN, huh? ;) Yeah, me too. The Kycon ones found in DirecTV boxes do not fit original Sega Saturn cables but some aftermarket Saturn cables for both. Also, Doujindance from Japan sells a "Saturn-style" one that looks nearly identical to Kycon but isn't quite. Same issue with original Saturn cables though.

    Ok so a 6 pin DIN connector is used as PS/2 old keyboard/mouse connector. But what makes DIN connectors better than other connectors if anything?
    I know there are also connectors known as spring and lock connectors for example. At least they feature a quick spring disconnection mechanism which may be working when unintented?
    There are also IEC connectors and Molex connectors (which can have up to 6 pins). So , is the usage of them just mainly due to customs and traditions of various industries? It seems that nothing makes any better than the other really, but..
    Because what could you want from a connector? Be made from high quality material, not to get loose over time like damn small usb ports , be water and dust resistant , maybe feature a light indicator or wattmeter even. But a wattmeter is over the top here , it should be separate. Be RoHS compliant. Be universal.
