      Also it has to do with the timing that it released under. Though it had many commercials it's release on Toonami wasn't a time spot many had access to. Trigun and Cowboy Beebop already had followings and had better time slots. Some of the problem was the over saturated market too. Tenshi, Gundam, and a dozen other space based things sapped peoples desire for another space based. Just wasn't slotted well at the time.

    It's true that Toonami's promos for Outlaw Star are one of the reasons why people remember it the most and God Damn those promos are masterful at selling the show. The show itself is flawed, there are a few episodes in the show I think are pure filler especially towards the end of the show. However the first half of the series is great to me. Personally I like Gene flaws and all mainly because he's like a bad ass average Joe in a space setting, he's still trying to find himself while figuring out what he truly wants in life. I like the rest of the cast of characters as well from the side characters and even some of the villains of the show. Sadly the villains in this show are kinda disposable, their memorable in their design but sadly allot of them are only around for one episode at a time and don't really get any development. Overall I like the show for what it is an what it tries to do. And after seeing this review I think I know what i'm watching again very soon X3

    • @OutlawMantis
      @OutlawMantis 6 років тому +2

      Only a few episodes in the initial broadcast are filler, really. Most of it's around the middle of the series.
      09: Gene and Suzuka hunt the legendary Zomba.
      13: Cactus Bastard. Enough said.
      14: Mad bomber, idea could have been inspired by Die Hard.
      16: The crew teams up with the "Old Man" to hunt dragonite.*
      19: Space Forces episode which was essentially a promo for Angel Links.
      23: Obligatory hot springs episode.*
      *These episodes weren't even a part of the main story and were included as bonuses in the video releases, so it was hard not to make them filler.
      Compared to other series with a heavier narrative focus, this is fairly tame when it comes to filler. I hope you enjoy it anyway!

      The first half of the show was so damn good. After the space race, it just fizzled out. Only two episodes stood out after the Race. The episode where they were trying to retrieve the treasure on the water world and that episode where Gene escaped from Prison stood out to me. The rest was pretty much unmemorable. Well, save for that fan service episode on the hot spring planet.

    Gene really a great character when you realize that the scared person and cool facade are there because of arrested development. He’s Starlord without the Walkman and a more direct reason for his trauma. At the end of the day Gene Starwind’s story is a kid dreaming of the stars and then finally living it with all the dangers that it entails. The whole show’s story is about Gene growing up.

    I adore the holy trinity of space westerns and they have a very strong nostalgic hold on me, but I have a special affection for Outlaw Star. I always found Aisha and Suzuka welcome additions to the ranks of utterly badass anime women, and the Outlaw Star itself has to still remain my favorite space ship not only from anime but from any sci-fi property. I'll also always have to rank the opening among one of my anime favorites. I mean how could you not love an opening that literally starts with the words "GO"? Thanks for the review, and I'm glad you overlooked it's flaws.

    Your issues with Gene Starwind's character are definitely understandable, but I also think that's part of what actually made him a pretty good character. He's arrogant and reckless, with Jim Hawking being the opposite of him entirely. He and Jim clash several times because of Gene's attitude and behavior, leaving Jim (who's pretty young) to worry about how they're going to afford food and other supplies.
    I think for sci-fi fans, it is a must-see. If some people dislike it, that's alright. I think it's worth watching at least once!

      Which gets even better in some few, but memorable moments, when their age difference is really evident. Jim is mature but still a child, Gene is reckless but still the adult, leading to some really inspiring scenes about their "big bro" relationship as Gene still find lessons to give.

    • @ranma36
      @ranma36 6 років тому +11

      His issues show a somewhat limited understanding of the Character, Gene's fear of space travel wasn't irrational by any measure.... he and his dad were attacked by pirates in space when Gene was a boy and he had to be placed in an escape pod and ejected to escape!
      Gene is one of my favorite protagonists throughout ALL of anime. He's not perfect, and his flaws made me like him even more.

    • @Acesahn
      @Acesahn 2 роки тому

      Most of his issues were way off. He got over his space phobia because the Outlaw Star has an advanced atmosphere generator, they mention this. He doesn't stress about their funding because he's young dumb and full of cum, looking for that big score. The show even acknowledges he's not invincible with the episode where he loses a duel and spends the next day and night gripped with fear that he's going to die and has nightmares, even takes it out on poor Mel trying to force himself on her.

    I'm so frustrated when I see what Outlaw Star could be. The world-building in the prologues, all the supplementary material, even the fact that Hilda had her own separate companions that she refers to in dialogue, indicating that she had a life outside of the episodes she appeared - they clearly had plans for a great world beyond this show... except the catastrophic failure of the "Angel Links" spinoff stopped such grand design dead in its tracks.

    Thanks for taking the time to dip into the past for some anime classics that (IMHO) people should still be aware of, seek out, and enjoy!
    Reading some of the comments, it seems Outlaw Star may suffer like many other older shows do (in fact, many other works of art in many media/genres) from the present-day perspective, in that many people think it's generic and unoriginal compared to lots of other things they've seen, without realizing that this was part of what came first, and all of the other shows they've seen first are the 'derivatives.'
    Another anime-related example is people who watch the OP for Gunsmith Cats and think it's trying to mimic the style and feel of Cowboy Bebop, except that Gunsmith Cats first aired in 1995, but Bebop didn't come out until 1998. (I recommend them both, BTW!)

    Amazing to realize that such a great number of now legendary titles, those that are still spoken of in reverential tones among anime fans to this day, all came out in the same year, and in fact so many of them on the same day! I know there's an ongoing debate that will perhaps never truly be concluded on "When was the Golden Age of Anime?" (possible topic for a future vlog/discussion vid, perhaps?); if we want to ascribe it to a full decade, I personally would say roughly 1997-2009, given that that period gave us almost all of the series names that are still recognized and (mostly) respected to this day: aside from this bunch, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (2002/3, sources seem to vary), Fullmetal Alchemist (2003) and Brotherhood (2009), even the much maligned but nonetheless household name Sword Art Online (2009). But if we were to condense the question of anime's peak down to a single year, 1998 would be a strong contender.

    Gene is a good character, he is a fleshed out character, thank to said mix out of badassery and flaws, so is the rest of the cast, and jim in the sub isnt annoying. I Think Gene has just amazing Hilda, who dies too early, the assasin who fills her role later and melfina who i dont really like but dont mind.
    And Joss whedon definitly stole the plot.
    Mel is Gene, tragic backstory charming rouge, has flaws
    Inara is the assasin, independent women with job just travelling around and love interest,
    Melfina is summer glau, with a mystery, and the mechanic girl
    Jim is Zoe, the straight man, and is mechanic too
    I think Aisha Ctarl Ctarl is Alec Baldwin, because she hunted him down, and is the muscle.
    And they have zany western like space adventures while they are wanted by several powerful people.
    Defenitly the plot of firefly.

      Pity or mercy in disguise that Sword of Wind oav never released as it's successor where they sold off the ship and continue post break up of Gene and the entire crew. To be honest though I really would have loved a successor to have been made. Or a parallel even since there were so many interesting people and plots side wise.

    funnily enough i re watched outlaw star like 9 years ago so its been almost as long since i rewatched it than since i watched it as a kid. and my reaction was the similar to arkada when i watched it as a kid i loved it. i liked it more than cowboy bebop at the time. but when i rewatched it, it just wasn't as good. as a kid i remember it hitting that dark edgey and creepy points perfectly. i remember really liking the big show down between the mcdoogals and the outlaw star and liking most the action and fights. on the rewatch i thought the hilda episodes were some of the better ones and most episodes were pretty average.

    His space phobia was addressed a few times. Even after he got the outlaw star seeing out into the void he freaked out, which Mel helped with. But he did say something about the Outlaw Star helped him feel fine. Whether that's plot contrivance, advanced systems or whatever, we'll never know since it was never said. Maybe it's simply having a crew around him, or a combo of them plus the ship's advanced systems.
    As for Gene leaning on Jim for proper work ethic, it was a balance. Jim was good at finding the jobs and Gene was the one good at combat. If he did both then what would Jim do? Take care of the ship? This is literally the dynamic in a business I run with my brother. He will make products, I run the store, do customer service & help where I can. It's actually very normal. Him complaining there's no money? Yeah that's something everyone does.
    I don't agree with the space harem thing, I don't even see where you got that from. Gene, Aisha or Susuka never made any moves toward each other. They seemed to entirely be in business together. He's only really ever gone for Mel & never even glanced at the two. I mean he shot Aisha in the face with a Caster so he's even tried to kill one of them.

    Outlaw Star in a lot of ways is like 1981 Heavy Metal. It's multi-themed but mainly sci-fi/space/fantasy. It's flawed but I cannot deny it is as cool as a corvette coming out of a space shuttle, flying through space, and landing on earth.
    It's a trip.
