Going to Rome next month and I’ve watched countless videos on tips and tricks for getting around Rome. This has been the most informational and helpful. Thank you so much.
That makes me happy to hear
See you in Rome!
Be careful with your belongings.
Culprits are everywhere. I witnessed it before my very eyes. One of my colleagues was pick pocketed by an old lady.
Wear a travel vest. All pockets should be in the front on the inside. Don't keep anything in your pants pockets!
Great video! Such fun delivery too
You are so kind

So glad to hear you like the video. If you have any questions, Rome let me know.
@@rozierroama yes I do if I may! For the colosseum visit - is it worth paying extra extra to tour inside. We are a group of 4 and would like to spend no more than 2 hours at the colosseum. I am not exactly sure what these deals on the traveling websites offer from one to another without feeling like it may not be needed. Any advice or thoughts on this please? Thanks so much!
You can buy tickets online only and the ticket includes the Roman Forum. As far as a tour, I have never taken one for the colosseum. I used an audio tour on my phone with an app that worked well but I have forgotten the name of it. I am sure you can find one with a little searching .There is an app called "get your guide" that you can read reviews and purchase tours but most are kinda costly. Use of app seems best option to me and costs far less if not free. best of luck
Thank you for the tips I am planning a trip to Rome Florence and Venice in September and appreciated the info on the metro payments and high speed rail
Great to hear. Have a great trip!
Lots of great information and advice in this video! I've been watching videos for months in preparation for my trip to Rome and this was the first time I've seen anyone mention Tap & Go. Thank you! 🙂

Great tips...Going in May !
Perfect. Have a great time! May is a really fun month in Rome, a bit crowded but easy to work around.
@rozierroama
I really love your videos, very informative and right on time !
Yes..I see. I visited last year first week in May. I have noticed such a price increase in air and hotel! . I am reserving the excursions now.
Wow!
Yeah, I get those rooms booked right away the closer you get to May the higher the prices go. As high as the prices seem right now, they can go quite a bit higher as the date approaches.
great advice especially the carabiner clips. Heading to Rome in two weeks-this will help so much
Nice, you’re the first person to mention a carabiner. Have a great trip!
The real reason for the carabiner is not just so you don’t forget your bag, but so that pickpockets don’t grab your bag and run as well
@@rozierroama. Small ones are great for securing zippers to lock you bags.
What a great video! I lived in Rome 30 years ago and am going back for the first time since then in 2024. Of course things have changed a lot since then. Your advice is excellent!
Thanks for the kind words & I am glad you liked the video. Some things have changed over the past 30 years in Rome but so much has stayed the same. Enjoy your trip!
@@rozierroama I served in Rome in 94-95. Sassari, Napoli Centro, Roma Trionfale, Ascoli Piceno. Avellino, Quartu Sant'Elena, La Maddalena.
Great advice for the Vatican.
I went in February and went to the museums in the morning and then went to visit the Basiilica straight after. Line was ridiculous.
Came back the next morning and got there at 7.30am and was in line for about 10-15 minutes. Early bird gets the worm.
So true!

Very helpful
That’s what I like to hear!
This is a great video! Thank you. Also, if you get to the Vatican at 8 am, where do you buy your ticket? Do you need to purchase beforehand? Thank you again!
Just a heads up, the Vatican now opens up at 7 AM. The tickets are not needed to enter Saint peters basilica. It is free. If you go to the museum, you can purchase tickets and the museum opens up at 8 AM, but I would get in line by 7:30 AM. As long as you get there before 8 AM.
Thanks so much this is so helpful- I will be in Rome in 2 weeks. I am catching the Terravision bus from airport to Roma termini then walk to hotel - hopefully this will be ok
There is also a direct train from the airport called the Leonardo Express. It runs about aver 20 minutes and costs 14 euros. It is a direct train straight to Termini.Takes 30 to 40 minutes. Bus can be good but depends on traffic. Have a fun trip.
Thank you for the useful information… we are planning to visit Italy in August. Is august a good month to visit .
Of the busy months it is the slowest. I prefer August of the busy months. I think the end of August is a bit better as it is a bit cooler but that is just averages. Have a great time!
Thank you for the reply. Have a good day .
When you tap (and go) will it print the ticket?
Thanks for creating a very useful video.
No ticket needed just show card used if needed
A fantastic video. So well made just one question. Let's say I tap my card getting onto the bus or at the metro, don't I have to make sure I tap again getting off the bus or coming out of metro, otherwise I'll keep been charged? That's how it was in London so not sure.
No, you do not. Online B there are some turnstiles that will require you to tap again for the turnstile to work but it will not charge you. Otherwise, you do not need to tap again to get off buses or metro.
Wow ! I stumbled upon your channel. Thank you so much; really informative but tell me if an inspector on the metro wants you to evidence a ticket but you paid with your credit card then how do you prove you paid? Thanks again pal.
If you get check just show them the credit card or app you used with Tap & Go and they have a devise to verify in just seconds.
Never saw one on a metro. Honestly found it really easy just getting a 3 day or 7 day ticket. They are always on the rails to other towns etc though
Your videos are highly informative. My wife and I will be visiting in May 2024. Question: Years ago, we used Eurail to explore some countries. Do they still have those information kiosks marked with "I' at major train stations where you can make pensione and hotel reservations. Our aim is not to prebook accommodations so we can have a much more flexible itinerary. Your recommendation is greatly appreciated. We will be travelling from USA/Nevada.
I hope you saw my reply on your first comment
Thanks for sharing these useful tips. Which App should I use to book train ticket? I checked OBB, but the price is same in different days!
Use the Italo app for high Speed rail. Also, Trenitalia has an app. I avoid using third-party apps. Advanced purchase discounts only apply to high-speed rail, the regular speed rail is always fairly cheap.
Appreciate this comprehensive yet simple video! We are going to Rome in 4 weeks and it’s not possible to buy a ticket to the vatican anymore. Of course on some ripoff sites you can buy them but not from the official site. Do you thin kwe can get in at 8am buying a ticket right there?
To go to the Vatican Basilica it is free and it opens at 7 AM. If you get there before eight, you should not have too long of a line to stand in. If you want to go to the museum, it opens at 8 AM.. I was just getting there closer to seven or 7:30 AM at the latest to get in line for tickets. The earlier the better. The line putting the museum starts forming early. Hope you had a great trip.
I also liked the ending. I bet your retention graph shows no hockey stick.
See you can teach an old dog new tricks
Hi... Awesome video.. 👏👏 one quick question.. could you please let me know from which app you are searching train tickets?
It was the Italo app or the Trenitalia app. Italo is just high speed and limited to the most popular destinations. Trenitalia services all of Italy. I generally try to take Italo as it is a little less expensive and serves most important cities.
@@rozierroama thanks for the reply 🙂
Thank you so much. We are going to Italy in Sept and getting on a cruise ship. We will spend 2 days in Rome first. We have seen so much information on where to stay near the train or cruise port. What advice do you have for that? Thank you.
I recommend staying in Rome. You can catch the train at Termini train station and there’s also a train station that it passes next to or very close to the Vatican that you can catch to Ciavitavechia. That way you can spend more time in Rome and the boats don’t leave until the evening so you have plenty of time to get there without a problem .
This is helpful information. Thank you! Do you happen to know if children ride for free on the buses and public transportation in Rome?
Chicken 10 and under are free
Not Chat GPT - Love it!
Thanks for watching the video. These days everybody’s an expert with ChatGPT.
Thank you for this! A couple of tours I have booked have stated that to curb the issue of ticket scalping, they are requiring passports as identification. Will a picture suffice for this purpose?
Yes a picture of passport will work
Hi,
Do you have any suggestions for a nice hotel near the Pantheon, that are like $200-300 a night. We are going at end of May and wanted something nice that would not break the bank. Thanks for the nice videos.
Prices are going up fast for May so book ASAP. I’ll get back to you shortly with maybe a couple of recommendations. If you wait too much longer prices are just gonna get higher.
Great tips… with regards to the Tap & Go metro and bus tickets; if you’re a family of 4 with 2 car/cards… what do you do?
You can use the same credit card as long as it is on separate devices so you can have the same card on 2 different smartphones or one could be on phone and the other use actual card. It just needs to track each person individually. If you were to scan the same card or devise twice it would only charge once until it has been 100 minutes
@@rozierroama thank you….✨
thank you
You're welcome. I hope you found the video helpful.
@@rozierroama very helpful, I took your tip and went to Vatican today at 8 am - best decision. Thank you
So glad to hear! I think my video says it opens at 8 AM, but I’m glad you still got in ok because now the Vatican opens up at 7 AM
If you do the tap your credit card at turnstile for train how do you validate? Or prove you bought?
This was helpful video. Thank you!
They cary a devise that you tap if requested to show proof. It happened to me recently. It only took a few seconds for them to verify my credit card was used to purchase tap & go. So no need for a ticket as proof of purchase.
Great video! If you use tap n’ go you do NOT need a ticket? If they enter bus to check tickets what do you show them? Or you still need a ticket ? Thank you for any help 😊
You do not need a ticket you just show them the card that was used to purchase. The real card or the one on your phone and they can track it from there. The system works great. No tickets needed! They are doing lots of promoting here in Rome for the Tap n Go system.
Ciao! I am confused on the train app you used at the end for reservations. You mentioned in a comment below that you used FREENOW app but I am seeing only cab type rides with this app. Am I missing something? Will be traveling from Milan to Rome mid May.
Sorry I may have spoke wrong. The app for taxis is FREENOW but for trains it is Italo & trainitalia. Italo is only high speed and serves only major cities. Better if you can find your train on it otherwise use Trenitalia
@@rozierroama many thanks, love your videos! They have been so helpful🙂
Thank you for these tips 🤩I’m finding Rome to be overwhelming; nevertheless I want to travel Italy to experience it. My Mom , Uncle and Grandfather (1st marriage) were all born in Corropoli and moved to Canada in the ‘50’s. Unfortunately all three were loss when I was young so never had the chance to ask them about Italy 🇮🇹. Their family name was : Varze ; if anyone from Italy has this last name, please let me know. My mom named me ‘Bari Marcus Anthony’.
This being said I most likely will travel Italy to see Rome, Pompeii, Venice and Como without the aid of my relatives in Italy, simply cuz I can’t find them. As a greenhorn tourist to Italy I pretty much need all the advice I can get coming from Canada, including the best connecting flights, hotels and places to eat .
Cheers !

Rome is a bit chaotic but awesome at the same time. My recommendation is just do it. For first time in Rome try staying in the Monti area where there is easy access to the subway and many things to see within walking distance. If you do not stay in Monti just try to stay in city center/ historical area. May I also recommend you visit Florence. It is a small city and easy to get around and it is also stunningly beautiful. I personally did not care for Pomeii it was ruin overload for me but most people really enjoy it. I would rather visit Sorrento and Naples that are nearby. Have a great trip. I hope you find your relatives!
How do they check your metro ticket if you tap and go? Your videos are great.
This did happen to me recently and I was also curious how they would verify. I told them I used Tap & Go and they just asked to see the app or credit card I used and they were able to verify in just a few seconds that it was used to purchase Tap & Go. Works great!
@@rozierroama grazie !
Please what's the APP or web site to get the train tickets? Thanks. Love all your videos, very useful to plan our next trip
Italo app for high speed only and my favorite! For all other trains Trenitalia app, There are also 3rd party train apps that I would not recommend using.
11:22 is ticket validation jsut for the shorter/metro trains, or does it also apply to tickets for trips like Rome > Florence? i bought those on trainline and have etickets so im unsure if i need to get that validated or if i can just walk on
Very good question. If your ticket has an assigned seat it does not need to be validated. All high speed rail trains have assigned seats. If your ticket does not have an assigned seat you will need to validate. You can validate on app. If you have a problem validating contact a conductor when you first get on train and they will help you. Have a nice trip and thanks for watching!
that is so helpful thank you SO MUCH! @@rozierroama
Metro is so cheap in Rome! I had a trip to Norway and was very surprised by how expensive public transit was. However, it was lovely trams, trains, and buses! Cheers from Kindle in Canada
Agreed public transportation is very inexpensive in Rome and even the trains throughout Italy are very cheep, only high speed rail can get a bit pricey. Are you a Trudeau fan? We do not hear too many good things about him?? Sorry if I am getting political. I was just curious. I have only been to Canada once and I liked it!
@@rozierroama Hi, yes I am a Trudeau fan! I liked his late father and I like Justin as well. However, I am on the West Coast of Canada and we are not as political as Central or Eastern Canada. We are chill on Vancouver Island.
Nice!
Great video, with a tap and go does it have a ticket that registers in your wallet so you can prove you paid? Also what is the train app you used? Thanks
This happened to me recently. If you use a credit card or an app on your phone, all you need to show the attendant is your credit card or app and let them know that you use tap and go. They have a device to quickly check if the card or app was used. It takes about five seconds. The app I was using was Italo. Another app is Trenitalia. Both have high-speed rail, but I typically use it low as it is typically less expensive and equally nice trains. The network of trains is not as extensive as the other, but it does tend to serve most of the popular cities with high-speed rail. There are other apps out there, third-party apps that I would not recommend using.
Also, what app do you use for the high speed train? Thanks again.
Italo app
Great tips! Is there uber in italy? Or do they have something equivalent to uber besides taxis?
Yes they have Uber but only Uber black which is quite a bit more expensive. It is best to use FREENOW app for taxis. Works great and gives estimate of cost before ordering and then it comes to your location
@@rozierroama thank you so much for the great tip. I sure could use these when i visit italy for the first time in 4 months.
Great video, but there is something I dont get: If you use your credit card to pay the Bus/Metro fare, are the machines giving you a phisycal ticket, or how they validate one has purchase the trip? Thanks in advance, sorry for my bad english!
This actually happened to me recently. If an attendant wants to see validation, all you need to do is show them the credit card or app that you used and they can use that to quickly verify that you used it when getting on the bus or metro.. they carry a device that can easily check. It is a common question I’ve been getting. Super easy just show them the app or credit card.
@@rozierroama Great sir! Thanks for the tips, already seen all your videos!
What is the high speed train app called? Thanks for so many great tips!!
The app I use is Italo
Thanks!!
Should tickets be bought weeks in advance or the day before? Particularly from Rome to Venice and Rome to Positano.
Day of you will pay full fair. To get a discount you will need to purchase in advance and during peak season you may need to purchase 3 to 4 weeks in advance to get the largest discount. All high speed trains have assigned seats and some trains will sell out in advance. You can usually find tickets day of if flexible on times.
I am confused about bus/metro - so when you use a credit card to 'tap and go' - do you get a ticket from a machine or something? If so where and how do you validate it?
Sorry I needed to be clearer. You only need to validate paper tickets. Once you tap you are good. If they check for tickets you just need to show credit card used
Great video I just have one question when you order food is it hard to order because you don't speak Italian
Good question. In Rome, it is pretty easy to get around speaking English actually. Most Italian speak enough English, especially anyone working with tourist regularly such as restaurants. If by chance you find yourself at a restaurant where they don’t speak English, which is unlikely luckily, you’ll recognize many items such as pasta, pizza, lasagna, Also, most restaurants have menus in English if you prefer
Yes, I will be visiting Rome soon and have a question about the tap and go. If you're stopped and asked to show a ticket, how does that work if you use the tap and go?
Wait. Do you actually get a ticket when you use the tap and go?
No ticket. If asked you just show the credit card or app used the they have a device that can confirm if it was used to to Tap & Go in just a few seconds.
I just responded. Any other questions?
Just arrived Germany from romefrom9 days Easter holiday. Been pickpocket despite been careful throughout the trip and jumped up on crowded bus 64 for 3 stations stop to termini on raining day, within 5mins, wallet gone. Very sure pickpockets still in same bus with me when discovered wallet gone.
That really sucks! 64 is know for the pickpockets.
I just booked a solo trip to Rome, I’ll be arriving 12/15. Staying 6 nights, I know a lady that that’s going to give me a tour of Naples and Christmas alley. I’m also going to spend a day in Florence. Any tips you can give for December?? I booked my hotel close to the Pantheon.
December is a fun month in Rome! We just visited Napoli last week and Christmas alley is very interesting and so much great food in Naples. Rome has its share of good food too.Have a great time!
Do small kids (7 year old) need tickets for metro or bus? If so, how you do use tap and go with them as they dont have their own credit card?
Kids nine and under are free
For tours for the colosseum and Vatican, do we need our passport for identification? I know they said we need form of identification but I’m not sure if our normal ID is enough?😢
Any ID including a picture of your passport on your phone. Good idea to take a picture of it but not have it on you while out and about.
Sorry if you have already answered this but what app are you referring to with the high speed train? I kept going back but didn't hear you say the name of the app. My family is going to Italy in late June and we are tying to save as much money as possible. Thank a ton.
For high-speed rail, that is where you save money not on the regular local trains and the app I use is Italo app. Remember you have to book as far in advance as possible, especially in peak season to get savings but if you don’t use your ticket for any reason they will not refund you any money. That is the slight drawback best of luck.
You do save money by taking local trains. Don’t get me wrong but the price does not change typically with advanced purchase that’s all I’m saying. If you’re not going very far and you have the time taking a regular train to, for example Naples consider you quite a bit of money if you don’t get a good discount on the high-speed, but it does take, about two hours longer
I am planning to ride a motorcycle from Madrid to Rome in May. Am I allow to ride it within the the city limit?
Yes with the exception of a few pedestrian areas in the very center of Rome
@@rozierroama Thank you
In terms of tap and go of your credit card how does that work with validation? If a guard asks for proof
They carry a device sick and easily check if your credit card or phone was used to purchase via the tapping go system. Just tap every time and you’ll be good.
If i buy the tap and go ticket in the metro and then get a bus is it still valid for 100 minutes? Cheers
Tickets for the metro are only good for one ride underground. Once you come up, you will need to get a new ticket to go back down or onto a bus. However, bus tickets are good for 100 minutes but only for buses and trams not the metro so each time you get on the bus or the metro just tap to be safe and it will only charge you according And give you the best rate overall
How do you show you have bought your bus or metro ticket if you bought with phone ( credit card)?
if needed you show the card or app on phone and they can verify from there.
Where is the pastry shopping show at minute 4:00?
I wish I could remember. I think it is the Forno located in Trastevere.
Which app do you recommend to book train tickets?
For high-speed use the Italo app for all of the regular trains use the Trenitalia app
@@rozierroama thanks so much
I noticed in the comments that you said there was a flat rate of 50 euros from the airport (FCO?) to Rome. Is it that same flat fare from central Rome to FCO?
Yes, it is the same fee. Either way in fact, in all of the taxi doors are the rates to and from the airport which indicate €50. They may charge an extra one dollar per bag but some taxi drivers do and some don’t. Just make sure you’re getting into a taxi with the taxi sign on top and not a black sedan. Typically black sedans and vans cost more. Once in Rome, it is best to use the app FRENOW and you can request the size of tax you need if you need it for four passengers. It cost the same. You don’t need to use the app if you’re near a taxi station, however
@@rozierroama Thank you so much for your information! Your videos are great. Thanks.
Hi, I just was trading comments elsewhere that people were getting charged way more for their taxi rides through FreeNow than they were quoted up front. Is there a trick to not getting overcharged?? Maybe we need a more in depth video on that, please!! Thanks for the tips!!
Taxis are an area that is kinda the wild west.Rome is getting better compared to many areas. The app gives an estimated range of what the ride should cost and every time I have used it it has been within the range. If you are dealing with heavier traffic and delays it can go over. The idea is to give you an idea of what the trip shoul cost which is bettter than no idea, If you pat through the app they do charge a small service fee. So far I have always paid directly to driver. I only use the app when I am not near a taxi station or do not know where one is. A couple more tips to help. Before getting in I always let the driver know I will be paying by credit card. All driver are supposed to have credit card readers but because of the extra fees they often want cash so I get that set up front so there is no misunderstanding. This next one is important when you get in make sure they turn the meter on as sometimes thay do forget and maybe on purpose at times. So make sure the meter is on. It llets them know that you are paying attention, You will be able to see the meter as you drive and watch the fee increase as you go. Hope that helps..
Thank you!
@@rozierroama
How do you show them you have paid for the ticket with your cc tap and go when they check it?
Just show them the credit card or app used
What app are you referring to buy train tickets?
There are 2. Italo app and Trenitalia app.
How can You Show You bought the Metro ticket with Tap and Go?
The ticket checkers carry a devise that can see if you used Tap & Go. You tap their device with your card in it lets them know if it was used. Super easy
So how do you “validate” your tickets if you’re using tap n go? Seems like won’t physically have a ticket if you use tap n go.
You do not need a ticket. You just show them your device or credit card and they can verify from there if it was used to purchase tickets
@@rozierroama Ahhh makes sense! Thank you!
I only want to go in St Peters basilica. I have seen a video where someone went there at about 6pm and just walked in. Do you. know if this is truer?
That is very sus. I would not rely on that being the case. It open at 7am and getting there before 8 is best option to get in without much of a wait. 7 am no wait, 8am less than 30 minutes, 9am about 1 hour, 10am after 2 plus hours

The best is Italo and the other option is Trenitalia. Italo only offers high speed trains, Trenitalia has all options.
The pizza place that does pizza for €5...where is it located? Ive tried looking it up but cant find it 😢
Pizza Florida!
I'm confused about the metro, I thought you said you no longer need a ticket due to the tap and go. But then you said don't get caught without a ticket, can you clear that up for me?
Sorry, bad choice of words what I meant to say is you don’t wanna get caught without having paid whether it be a ticket or through tapping go because your credit card is your ticket if you used it to validate your entry
Does Tap and Go give you a printed ticket? Otherwise, how do you show proof of payment to transit authorities?
No tap and go does not give you a ticket. It’s all digital. If you get caught and they want to see if you have a ticket just show them your app or your credit card and they can verify that it was used to purchase and it won’t be a problem.
What is the ticket you show from the bus if u use a credit card ?
You just show them the credit card. It happened to me once. They quickly were able to determine I used to card to get on bus
If you use tap and go on public transport, and they want to check your ticket, how do you prove you have one?
The ticket checkers carried device that can determine if your card or app was used to purchase a ticket.
I don’t understand. You can use your phone to pay on a bus or a turnstile. Does it dispense the ticket? And each ticket is for 100 minutes? Can you get a ticket for the whole day?
With tap and go, you just tap every time and the most it will charge you in a given day is the cost of a daily ticket which I think is seven euros but whatever it is you get the best rate. You do not need a ticket if they check you for a ticket just show them your phone that you paid with or your credit card or ATM and they can verify it quickly through a device they carry, with tap and go they do make it easy for you because now you really only pay for what you use. In the past, you could buy a three day ticket but not even use the metro or bus enough to justify the purchase, but now if you do justify the purchase, it will automatically give you the one day rate, two day rate, three day rate, whatever’s best value for you
Bus tickets are good for 100 minutes but even if you get on a second bus 30 minutes later and tap it will not charge you the second tap because you tapped within 100 minutes. The same tickets are used for the metro, but they are only good for one time underground not for 100 minutes.
@@rozierroama Thank you so much. I was really puzzled! I appreciate your help! ❤️ from Florida!
What is the fast train app? Tks
Italo
Tap and Go question. Traveling with a teenager. Will they need a credit card too?
Kids are free up until like 10 years old so a teenager will need his own credit card. It can be your credit card that’s just put onto an app like Apple Pay on his own personal phone. It can be the same credit card you’re using but it needs to be on a separate device, either his phone or his smart watch. If that’s too much a hassle, you can also purchase regular tickets.
7:03 ive seen others say that you're actually supposed to walk around with your passport in case you need ID... is this not the case? i'd SO prefer not to walk around with it like you suggest! just something i saw lots of people say
Lots of people say that but I promise a picture of it on your phone works just fine. If you are getting a rental car, sim card you will need to shaw actual passport. Do not tour city with passport in my opinion
What’s the app for the fast train?
Trenitalia has an app that you can book both regular speed and high-speed trains on. Italo is another train service that also has an app that offers only high-speed trains. It makes it much more convenient to order on app then have to stand in line at the station or kiosk. Generally Italo a little bit less expensive, but the trains are equally as good and as fast
Question about tap and go, credit cards, devices, what exactly am I showing them on my device? A photo of my credit card? Sorry I'm stupid. Lol
No problem. If you paid with credit card show them that. If you pain with phone or watch open up the program you paid with, Apple Pay or whatever and they can verify from there
The fine for using bus or subway without paying is close to 100 euros
@@rozierroama ahhh ok. Thank you for clearing that up.
